"Way better than I expected"
I was in Kansas City to do some research at the National Archives. I picked the hotel because of the location and price. I was way better than I expected. Happy hour, decent breakfast, shuttle service, great room, in the historic Westport part of town. I walked around the neighborhood with out a care. The bars and restaurants were close and varied. […] A great say. The service was excellent and extremely helpful. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great convenient to everything"
Just north of the plaZa. Access to all interstates and major thoroughfares. Love the neighborhood. The people working there were fantastic! Love the breakfast!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location, great complimentary breakfast"
Great location near to all the fun in Westport. The complimentary breakfast was one of the best I have had in a long while for a business stay. The room itself left some to be desired, a towel was VERY dirty when I got into the room, it looked like no one had really cleaned the bathroom with any detail since the last occupant (soap still in the shower, […] dirty towel, hair on floor). Bed was too soft for my taste but I am sure most would like it. The staff was all friendly and easy to work with I really liked the service. The bar/grill next door was pretty load through the walls/windows for well past my normal sleeping time. Good internet access and really easy to use. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Awesomely surprised by this new hotel"
We weren't sure at first because the price was so low and it was right by downtown. I was surprised by how clean this hotel was and how nice the breakfast was. I loved it. Will definitely stay again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Work in Progress"
In midst of remodel. Feet in both old and new camps. Still work to do.Genuine Expedia guest review
Fan of cooling system loud and external noise a bit distracting during night. a fridge in room would have been nice.Genuine Expedia guest review
I've stayed at this hotel several times. This was the first time i've stayed here since Holiday Inn sold the building and it was rebranded as 816 Hotel. I have to say that they have made some great updates to the hotel. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful. I will continue to stay here because its a great price and location and I would […] recommend this to anyone for business or pleasure. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Comfortable & Convenient for Tour"
Hotel staff was friend, room is clean, break first is fair, and hotel locate in downtown, it is very convenient for city tour.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Be flexible & keep a positive attitude"
A handful of rooms have been remodeled, but the rest show the age of the hotel. Dingy bathtubs, non-working bathroom fans, old mattresses & a musty stench make this place reminiscent of a cheap motel. We were initially given a room that was gross, given a second that was in-use and the third was just sufficient for the single night we needed for sl […] eep. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very Nice Stay"
The room was clean, comfortable and quiet, cue to its upper-floor location (our friends on the 2nd floor were not happy with the noise). The breakfast had fresh fruit and what appeared to be home made yoghurt, very welcome additions to the standard breakfast fare, as well as custom omelets. The happy hour complimentary cocktails and the evening fresh-baked […] cookies were welcome, too. I can't say enough about the staff - very friendly and accommodating. Really a lovely stay. Unfamiliar with KC I chose this hotel because it seemed in between all the sights. It is in a fun neighborhood with lots of restaurants and bars and shops within walking distance. I had a themed room and really enjoyed the pictures of old Kansas City on the walls. The room was clean and comfortable even thought this was a former Holiday Inn. The staff […] were extremely friendly and helpful with excellent suggestions on where to eat and activities. Melanie at Reception and TJ at the nightly manager's reception were especially helpful. They also have a good breakfast with an omelet bar. I would definitely stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Dated is acceptable, dirty is not."

I was in town for a medical procedure and got a nice rate from the folks at 816. I'm by no means wealthy or snobby, but I wasn't comfortable at this hotel. I'm ok with dated or "well-loved," but I'm not ok with dirty. The hotel just seemed dirty. We asked for a quiet room and we did get that, which was great. We got the "Roo" mascot room. It's cute, but 2 stadium folding chairs with plastic cushions instead of a sofa? Eh. There was also a basketball hoop in the room, but we didn't use it (the noise would probably bother the neighbors, and we thought it was a curious choice to put that in a hotel, but whatever). The carpet seemed worn, but it also seemed uncared for and dirty. The bathroom was probably the worst part. The old tile was chipped, the sink was badly scratched, and the tub was stained grey all over the bottom. I don't know if that happens with age, but I've never seen it in another hotel. I didn't want to get in it. I put towels down on the floor to walk on in my bare feet whenever I was in the bathroom. There was also debris and crumbs in the hallway near the elevator that never got cleaned up while we were there. Garbage cans were kind of dirty on the outside, etc. Just added to the "ick" factor. The 816 is also in a downtwn type area. Hipsters, students.etc. There are fabulous restaurants nearby, and we hit McCoy's and had a great meal. But if you're used to a "suburban sprawl" experience with a generous, clean parking lot, this place might not be for you. They share parking with a popular bar next door, which is kind of a hassle. The rate was great, the staff was super nice and helpful, no complaints about that. Maybe the business rooms are nicer. If they could clean up some important parts, they'd have a nice place!

We loved our experience in Westport. We checked in to late for the happy hour but it looked like the folks who made it had a blast. The decor is really cool there are murals of old Kansas City all over the walls and halls on every floor. Nothing real special about the room, but nothing to complain about either. It was clean and comfortable and we had a great view of the westport bottoms. We went over to the 39th street corridor for dinner and had some late night drinks at a local bar called fric and frac, pool and local flavor were great and the drinks are 2 for 1 after midnight at least they were that night :-) I recommend dinner right next door at the Flea market if you have never there it is one of KCs best burger values. Enjoy!!
"Bravo ... again"

I will do almost anything to not take an overnight trip. That is unless the trip is to Kansas City and I can get a reservation at the 816 Hotel. Yes there are some upgrades that could be done (bathrooms) yet the staff is second to none. When I return to KC it will be to the 816.

This hotel was in an area that I like however it was pretty run down. The tub was either worn or dirty. It is a pretty good price but nothing fancy. Had a morning breakfast but it was filled with people that acted like they had not eaten in months. Staff seemed friendly. Not sure if I would stay there again.
"Trip to KC"

I rate this hotel a 3-1/2 but can not see it as a 4. I booked this hotel on line, but the hotel staff had to spend several minutes looking, before finding my reservation. According to the web-site, "Our Select Service hotel offers spacias rooms decorated with archived photos of Kansas City's history" yet my room with a king size bed had no photos of KC and the room was much smaller than represented on the website. It definitely was not "spacias" (spacious). It was however clean, yet dated and in need of a makeover. The bathroom was not designed to have two people in it at once, and the ceiling had old water stains and damage to it from a past upstairs leak. The web-site boasts that it has "in-room coffee from Kansas City's own Roasterie", that is not the case; unless Maxwell House is a Roasterie product. I agree with the web-site in it does have exemplary customer service, out of 5 front desk staff all but one had an awesome attitude and made the place feel warm and friendly. There was a young white guy that had the personality of a rock, yet answered questions when asked. The rest were very user friendly and took care of business with a smile. I loved the fresh cookies every night and the free drinks were great as they have local beer from "Boulevard Brewing Company" on tap. (A very nice wheat beer.) The made to order omelets in the morning and both ladies that made them were awesome and they host a very nice breakfast. The Hotel is very close to a lot of very cool things to do, based upon your needs of course. Close to a lot of walking distance local owned restaurants and some local small stores, but you defiantly need a navigation system in the car or on your phone to not get turned around. :-) For the price of the room ($130.00 a night), I am not sure I would go back, but would not have any reservations of staying there again if I had to. Again over all very nice staff, they make the hotel a better place. One thing I found odd, was at check out they did not give a receipt for the stay, so I have had to wait to make sure they properly billed my credit card.
"Outstanding Group Stay"
12/09/14 Bonnie F Lincoln, Nebraska
This hotel did an outstanding job serving our group in early December. They reserved a space for the motorcoach and we had a wonderful welcome reception. They even reopened their bar area after we returned from the play in the evening so people could use any of their remaining drink tickets. Out-of-this-world omelets for breakfast the next morning. Thanks again to the staff. We will be back!
"Service is amazing"

John the car driver was so helpful and kind. Great service and such wonderful people. Staying here really feels like staying at a good friend's house. The hotel may not be fancy, but it makes you feel cared for. This hotel made our trip to Kansas City amazing!
"Comfy theme rooms, uber-friendly staff, good breakfasts"
12/02/14 Danmantravels Denver, Colorado
We stayed here for four nights to attend a reunion. Our previous go-to place, Q-Hotel, was sold and in renovations. Reviews for this hotel were quite positive, so we decided to give it a try. Not disappointed! Our room was quite comfortable, king size bed with a firm mattress and bedding. The theme in this room was Irish heritage, so there were photos of Irish history in KC and a tapestry. Room had a small sofa and fridge. Plenty of room for two people. Only issue was the water pressure and hot water selection in the shower. There was more pressure when the colder settings were used and when you turned it to hot, the water switched from the shower head to the bath spout. Staff was always very friendly and had a smile. This was the case with virtually everyone we encountered--morning, afternoon, or evening. Breakfasts are free and it is more than just a standard continental breakfast. There is an omelette bar, waffles, fresh fruit, breads, juices, cereals and coffee. Eating area is a bit small and it was crowded and noisy every morning. You also get two free drinks in the afternoon. Location is about three blocks from the heart of Westport and five minutes to the Plaza. Throw in free parking and WiFi and this hotel offers a good value relative to other choices nearby. We would definitely stay here again.
"Nice place except...."
12/02/14 razzer72 Hays, Kansas
This was my second stay here. As usual the staff was outstanding. Only two things that were disappointing. First, I sure wish our room would have had a fridge. Secondly, on our third day at the hotel we had our room cleaned. When we returned at the end of the day we had a phone charger stolen which was plugged into the bathroom outlet. My gf would not let me inform the front desk. It is very disheartening for this to happen because the staff is always so nice and helpful here. Lastly the water was warm but not hot in the shower each morning. Otherwise we had a good stay.

I don't think I've stayed in a friendlier hotel than this one. Whenever a staff member passes you in the hallway or sees you in the elevator they're always ready with a friendly greeting. Other than the amazing customer service, it's a great little hotel in the middle of the Westport neighbourhood of Kansas City. A good location only a short drive from downtown.
