Howard Johnson Express Inn - Houston Downtown

We decided to go to Washington Ave for a friend's birthday party but didn't want to drive home after the clubs. The rooms were decent but there is a TON of construction in front of the hotel which makes it hard to get in and out of the parking lot. The woman at check-in was very helpful despite her broken english and the night shift worker was pleasant […] and apologetic when our cab left without us. We stayed at the Howard Johnson on Thanksgiving weekend. The stay was fine expect the construction that was being work on in front of the hotel. The gates located on the side of the hotel were closed early and we had to go through the construction area which lead to the main entrance. The first room I was in had a refrigerator that clunked constantly and smelled heavily of perfume. When I turned on the heat, the unit dumped smoke at me and set off the fire alarm. The room they moved me to smelled like vinegar and had not been cleaned. There was rust in the tub and the bathroom was much colder than the rest of the room I assume because […] of the drain in the middle of the floor that I am guessing went down to the sewer. This might also explain the vinegar smell. It took 15 minutes of running for the water in the shower to be anything other than ice cold and the walls were so thin it sounded like there was a herd of elephants all around me. Our stay at the Howard Johnson was great! We were comforable and we didn't have to travel too far to get to our daily destination in the downtown area. All the necessary amenities were provided. The only suggestion I would offer would be that rubber mats and safety handles be added to the tub to prevent any slipping or falling.

Reserved that room with a whole month in advance, when I got there the room was the most inconvenient one in the whole building! There wasnt enough parking spaces so if you got back late at night you will have to park outside of the complex and the hood around it's not the safest one to say the least, but you get what you pay for, I'll never stay here […] again and I'd recommend everybody to spend a little extra and find a better place than this... My wife and I went to a taping of Americas Got Talent at the Verizon Theater in Downtown Houston. I picked this hotel because it was the closest most reasonable hotel in the area. Check in was great, the clerks were very nice and helpful. The girl at the desk the next morning was not helpful at all. The breakfast area was very messy and unkept. The […] milk they had for the cereal was in a vase left out with no refrigeration so I stuck with the waffles and coffee, which were both very good. The outside of the room was covered in bird poop from all the pigeons that were not shood away. The room was great and comfortable as a five star would be. We weren't there very long but way too much birds and their remnants. They need anti-pigeon repellant or something to get rid of all the birds. Probably wont stay again. Read more

We booked this hotel room simply as a place to crash during a road trip. It was a 5 minute drive to downtown Houston and in a relatively safe-looking area. The manager was very friendly and helpful.
