"Clean hotel 10 mins from Venice's main bus station"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 5, 2012
The rooms were clean and spacious. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The included buffet breakfast consisted of eggs, cold meat, cereal and fresh baked croissants. This hotel is great value! It is a 10 minute walk from the Mestre bus/train station, next door to a supermarket and close to kebab/pizza restaurants and some pubs. It is very easy to get into central Venice. There is a bus right across the street that comes every 10 mins and takes about 12 mins to get to the main bus station in Venice. It costs a little over a euro one way and you can get the ticket at the reception (along with vaporetta tickets). Keep in mind though that st.mark's square is about a 35 min walk from Piazalle Roma ( the bus station). Unless you want to lug your bags through the narrow, busy streets and (many) staircases of Venice and pay a fortune for a dump, I would recommend staying in the Mestre area and this hotel was great value for the money.

We stayed 1 night only and were very happy with the hotel. Dont forget to get you key from Hotel Luca as the Casa Dolce has no reception. The feeling of the hotel is as you were resident of Venice. We highly recommend it.

For visitors arriving by rail or by bus, Cannaregio is Venice’s front door and the start of the Grand Canal. It sees a lot of passing traffic in terms of canal boats and visitors en route to San Marco, but is otherwise quieter and less touristy than central Venice. Points of interest include the Ghetto area (the original Jewish enclave) with its museums and the majestic Ca d’Oro palace, one of the iconic buildings of the Grand Canal.

"Back alley gem"
Tucked away off the Grand Canal, this is a surprisingly delightful hotel with a fantastic, helpful, engaging staff. Next door to the train station and an easy walk from where the cruise ship people mover drops you off (although the steps on the marble and glass bridge are a killer with suitcases). Near access to a vaporetto stop and great local cafes […] and restaurants. Read more
"Hotel Abbazia in Venice, Italy is a great hotel."
The Hotel Abbazia is a very clean, safe and affordable hotel. It is within a block of the train station and local bus station. The water taxi/bus stop(Ferrcia) is at the end of the street on the Grand Canal. It is one block from the Grand Canal and close to the port where our cruise ship docked. The hotel clerks were very helpful and they all spoke […] good English. They have a very nice free continental breakfast. The rooms are nice and large compared to a lot of the European hotels. The hotel was just beautiful inside and it made for a wonderful vacation for us. The price was very affordable for us through Hotels.com. Read more
"Excellent staff, great location"
The hotel is at a primary location--close to railway station, the bus terminal, a station for the river boats and the harbor for the big ships--yet in a quite alley. The room was super clean and comfortable for a three-star hotel while the service is close to five stars. The staff members are all very pleasant and eager to help. The free breakfast was […] in very good quality. The only thing that I wish to improve is that the bathroom in our room--though equipped with hot-tub and a movable shower head but no shower curtain and thus very hard if you do not want to have a hot bath but simply take a shower. Nevertheless, overall, it is a great hotel and definitely a bargain for what you paid for. Read more
"Nice quiet place"
Lovely little hotel close to the train station, but off the main street. Nice room. Good breakfast. Comfortable mattress. One night stay before a train trip to Florence. Worked very well. Would recommend.
"Very accomodating"
Very accomodating staff. Lovely private little courtyard
"Ehh, had better"
We stayed in room #214. Of the four hotels we stayed in on our two week Euro-trip, this was by far the worst (and all were in the same stars / price range). The people at the front desk were the least friendly of all the hotels and the room was dark and dingy (terrible dark red wallpaper in the room from top to bottom) and it smelled terribly of smoke. […] I'm not sensitive to smoke (both parents smoked in the house growing up), and this room gave me a headache. Also, the air conditioning (which barely worked to begin with) was mysteriously completely shut off after our first day there, so it was super hot in the room and we couldn't open the window because there was no screen and the mosquitoes would come in by the dozens. Also - and I know this isn't the hotel's fault - but there are ridiculously loud church bells right next to the hotel that ring at odd times like 7:15am and 9:30am (I'm guessing on the times) and they ring over 100 times each time they ring (I literally counted 105 bell rings in one ringing session!). It's really almost comical how long and loudly they ring. The location is about 100 meters from the train station, which was amazing for us because we took the train into and out of town. The city is super tight and crowded, and the water taxis are ridiculously expensive, so we were very happy to be a 30 second walk from the train station. The hotel is about as far as a walk as you can get from the epicenter of the tourist area (San Marco Palace area), but it's walkable from the hotel and we did it almost every day without trouble (FYI - we live in a major US city and are used to walking a lot every day). So depending on what your priorities are, this location is either perfect or not very great. Read more
"iNTERESTING"
THE HOTEL HAD A VERY GOOD BREAKFAST BUFFET INCL. WITH ROOM, ROOM WAS NOT LARGE BUT SUFFICIENT, WALKABLE FROM CRUISE SHIP TERMINAL, WALKED TO SAINT MARK SQUARE TWICE AND RETURNED. ALSO RODE THE WATERBUS, VERY EFFICIENT TO MURANO. vENICE IS EASY TO GET AROUND IN JUST FOLLOW THE PEOPLE TRAFFIC. HAD A GREAT TIME.
"Hotel Abbazia - near Plaza Roma and Train Station"
This is a pleasant hotel, converted from an old monastery, within walking distance of the train station (no bridges to cross) and Plaza Roma (one bridge to cross). The lane to the hotel is small and can easily be missed, so watch carefully after you have passed the train station. The staff were friendly, helpful, and fluent in English and French. Our […] room was quiet, clean and adequately sized, with a tub and hand-held shower. If your sleep is easily disturbed by light, you will want to bring eye-shades as the window shutters did not completely block the light in our room. Free WiFi (get login information at the front desk) and a nice breakfast (continental) is included in the room rate. The Ponte de Scalzi bridge across the grand canal and the Ferrovia waterbus stop are within 150 yards of the hotel entry. Beyond the hotel's control, but of note to travelers, are the men who want to help you with transport your luggage on the bridge between the Plaza Roma and the Cannaregio section of the city. They will grab your luggage and take off quickly, so you must either firmly and frequently say no, or tell them what you are willing to pay. If you don't do this you may find yourself in an agruement over the value of their service when you reach the opposite side of the bridge. Read more
"Comfortable beds with wonderful service"
This hotel is a concern when you first walk down the alley, however, we discovered that there are tons of "alley's" in Venice. When we were greated at the desk, those concerns melted away. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. We left our bags with them in the morning until check in, and when we returned, they had even taken them to our room […] for us. The beds where exceptionally comfortable.. the AC perfect.. and the breakfast fresh and delicious. The bathroom was newly updated and beautifully tiled. It felt like stepping back in time to a warm, friendly inn. The outside area in the middle of the building felt secluded and quiet... a nice reprieve from the 12 day cruise and tours we had just completed. We will return! Read more
"Convenient to the train station"
This hotel is very, very convenient to the train station, but not very convenient to the sites. TINY rooms, TINY bathrooms- but super-friendly staff.
"convinient location"
nice, quiet and close to train station and vaporetto stop; great breakfast; I would ad a shower curtain and a higher hook for the shower head
"Very nice place to stay !"
We stayed 2 nights pre-cruise at the Hotel Abbazia. It is very close to the train station, easy walking distance even with luggage. We took a van from the airport which left us at the Plaza Roma, not very far from the hotel, but we had 2 persons with wheelchairs, and there is a fairly large bridge to go over. Walking was out of the question, so we took […] a water taxi to the Ferrovia stop, which is right by the train station and walking distance to the hotel, even with wheelchairs. As to the hotel, it is an old converted church/monastery, very clean, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were air conditioned, and we even slept with the windows open one night. The breakfast was very nice, with fresh rolls, toast and croissants, cheese and ham, cereal, hard boiled eggs, coffee, orange juice, etc.. It was very nice to just go downstairs and eat breakfast, and not have to look around the neighborhood for someplace to eat. We had a minor problem with the showerhead not working properly, and it was fixed promptly. If you are a late sleeper, there are church bells right next door that WILL wake you up at 7:15 and 8:15 am. There is also a bar/coffee bar that was open for a glass of wine or cappuccino in the large sitting room/living room area. And there is a very nice courtyard where you could also eat your breakfast, or sit out in the evening and relax and talk. I highly recommend the Hotel Abbazia and would definitely stay there in the future. Hint: Get the water bus/taxi 24 or 48 hour pass and take the water taxis all around Venice. You can get on and off as much as you want, and can really see several different neighborhoods. There is a great little restaurant right in the alley by the hotel, Alle Lance, that had the best pasta with bolognase sauce my father-in-law ever had. Read more
"Great Staff"
This was my second stay at this Hotel. The staff was really great. The Front Desk Clerks, Mirko and Rafaelle, were absolutely great. They were very helpful, recommended great restaurants, gave perfect advise on local attractions and made our stay perfect. This hotel is one of the most accessible in Venice as it is only a short walk to the train station. […] Also they have a great courtyard and great lounge/lobby. I will stay here again if I am back in Venice. Read more
"Fantastic location..right at the foot of Venice"
Close to absolutely everything. Charming room with friendly staff. A/C wasn't to be turned on for another week, so they got us a fan and we were set. Across the bridge from the train and bus station, but across the world in atmosphere from them. When you cross the bridge, you enter a new world. Loved our evening walks when we were too tired to do much […] but walk around the canal, shops and restaurants by our hotel. No elevator, but the stairs were easy to navigate and gave us just a little extra exercise. Read more

"friendly staff"
we recently stayed 1 night in early May. the hotel staff was very nice & friendly. As for the hotel itself, it is really run down. the room was hot. when asked for the air condition, we were told that it won't work before the summer & suggested to keep the window open. our room was on the first floor & open to the garden with no fly screen that we woke […] up with bug bites. "Great location"
The location is excellent; 5 minute walk (with luggage) from the train station and ten minute walk (again with luggage) to the bus for the airport. The hotel is a converted abbey. Very cool architecture and floors. We were satisfied with our room. Only complaints were handheld shower (no shower curtain) and hard pillows. These two issues would not […] keep us from staying at this location again. The staff was excellent. Read more
"Only Adequate"
I booked my stay at the Hotel Abbazia, based on a number of extremely positive reviews both here and on other travel rating sites. Following our stay, I am somewhat surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reviews that Abbazia has received. In a nutshell, Abbazia is an exceedingly faded and shabby hotel. Some amount of wear and tear is to be expected […] in a city like Venice, but even by the (low) standard of hotels in historic European cities, Abbazia is pretty rough. Furniture, walls, bed coverings and hanging art are old and worn, showing the signs of hard use. Our room was tiny, and the standing shower so small as to be actually funny, until we tried using it. If you were anywhere BUT Venice and walked into this hotel, you'd probably turn around and walk right back out again. All of that said, there were some high points: 1) Location -- the location of Abbazia is beyond excellent. It is literally the only place in Venice where you can stay without having to haul your bags through a dizzying combination of expensive boats and narrow, crowded alleys. Walk out of the train or bus station, turn left, and there you are. 2) Staff -- The staff are friendly, outgoing and quite helpful. They were uniformly funny and their restaurant recommendations excellent. 3) Cleanliness -- While old, small and badly in need of a refreshing, our room was impeccably clean. Bottom line: I'd rather have given this a 2.5 than a 2, but I felt like a lower score was warranted to balance out some of the over-reaching of other commenters. If you feel like a hotel should just be a clean, convenient place to rest your head, Abbazia might be right up your alley. However, if you like a hotel to be updated, roomy and well designed, you may want to keep looking. Read more
"Hotel Abbazia - Very Convenient Location"
If you don't want to carry luggage up and down bridges, this is a perfect location. It is very near the train station which makes it great if you plan on day trips to other locations. The staff was excellent, particularly theguys at the front desk. I would definately stay here again and would recommend it to my friends,
"great hotel & great location"
we were very happy with our stay at hotel abbazia. although it was not right on the grand canal, it was just down the alley from the canal, with a vaporetto " public motorboat" right there. it was nice & quiet.we loved venice & will be returnin.the hotel was also reasonable priced as well.
"stay in venice april 2011"
the concierges at this hotel practically made the stay so friendly, charming and helpful the hotel is in a great old abbey building the rooms are a bit sparse, but clean overall a great stay - great convenience with a 3 minute walk from the train station on a quiet street away from the hustle and bustle felt very safe in the neighborhood
"Hotel Abbazia"
this hotel was definitely over-priced,no elevator and we were on the top floor, quite a climb for Seniors, the street was a little seedy, however hotel personnel were very friendly, breakfast was mediocere at best.
"Quirky but nice"
The hotel was lovely and the staff most very accommodating but we had a funky room that only had a jacuzzi tub with a hand held shower head and no shower curtain so showering and washing your hair was a challenge. No elevator was stated but at the end of a long day it was a drag. Air conditioning wS not on yet and it was a bit warm and noisy at time […] with windows open. Otherwise, an easy walk to train station and convenient to the water bus. Read more

"Abbazia Hotel, Venice, Italy"
The location of the hotel was good. It was near the train station, the bus stop to the airports, and all the must-see sights. The hotel was clean and the breakfast was good. The only negative thing was that the free WiFi was not always working.
"awesome staff - good hotel - great location"
2 minutes away from the train station/ vaporatto stop - so very convenient. We booked for 3 people, when i got to the hotel, the hotel people said they only knew about 2 people staying - but the hotel folks accomodated us very easily. One thing - no elevator - so an issue with huge luggage / handicaps. Overall, great stay !
"Abbazia Hotel - great location, staff, and hotel"

"Loved the stay @ Abbazia Hotel in Venice, Italy"
We stayed 2 nights @ Abbazia Hotel, Venice, Italy prior to a Mediterranean cruise from Port of Venice. The staff was very courteous and accommodating. There were no elevators; our bags were delivered to our rooms by staff. The complimentary breakfast was a plus. Each room was decorated differently, we loved our room. Transfer to Venice Port for our […] party of eight to include 10 bags was arranged by staff for a fee. The hotel location was convenient to walk around Venice for shopping, eating, and catching water taxi for other attractions. Overall very good experience and would recommend this hotel and stay there again. Room was located on 3rd floor, walking stairs helped burn calories for all the pastries, pizza, and gelato consumed during our stay. Hotel rate was reasonable. Be prepared to walk to reach the hotel including stairs which is not easy while carrying luggage. Even though the hotel was not easily accessible or readily visible since the streets of Venice are narrow (similar to alleys in some USA cities). But upon finding the street and entering hotel I was very pleased. Read more

"Excellent location"
It was the perfect location for us as first time visitors arriving by train. It was literally around the corner from the station and took us 2 min to walk there. The concierge staff was extremely helpful and friendly and gave us excellent directions and restaurant recommendations. We had a superior double, which is a very large room, with a big closet. […] The shower was a little awkward as there was no shower curtain and the shower head hangs from a hook at about waist high so we ended up spraying water everywhere until we figured out the best way is to sit in the tub and shower. Overall it was a very satisfactory stay. The church bells ringing at 7:30 did not bother us as we were still jet lagged and were awake by then anyway. One thing that did bother us though was the number of Mosquitos. I'm surprised they're still around in mid oct and they seem to have a nest in the bathroom. We were bitten multiple times on the face while sleeping at night and the bites swell up and stay swollen for a couple of days! Read more
"Hotel Abbazia in Venice...great staff, near train"
The hotel is very convenient to the train which makes it easy to find. The location is perfect to reach the water buses (vaporetto) which take you everywhere. Try to stay in a garden view room, otherwise you will overlook an alley which can be noisy and a bit smelly (smoke, food). The air conditioning is weak, making the room a bit warm. The desk staff […] was terrific, the hotel is quaint, the rooms are clean, and the breakfast was plentiful. The garden offers a lovely place to relax. Read more
"Quaint and friendly and convenient"

"Hotel Abbazia--best location imaginable"
The hotel is basically a renovated monastery next to a church, with antique furniture, lovely patios, and great service. The rooms are small, but nice. The location is superb, if you come into the main train station! It is less than a five minute walk, but is on a side street that could be a challenge to find if you don't understand the numbering system. […] We were close to great shopping, restaurants, and boats. The gentleman at the desk was SO FUNNY and engaging--I think he spoke 4-5 languages to different visitors while we were standing there. The staff were all helpful and kind. They even had a lap-top on the desk that we could use, with free WI-Fi, in the large sitting room/lobby. I would stay there again in a minute. Read more
"Abbazia Hotel in Venice, Italy"
We chose this hotel because it was near the train station, and because of the lovely photos of the courtyard. We found the entire place to be charming, and would certainly stay there again. The staff was extremely professional, courteous, and helpful. The vintage red sofas and chairs arranged in the lounge made us feel as though we were walking through […] a movie set. Breakfast was varied and delicious, and our room was quite comfortable. We followed our time in Venice with visits to Florence and Rome, but only in this neighborhood in Venice did the elderly residents call out "Bella Sera" to us as we strolled in the evening (In Florence, they will answer you if you call out first; in Rome, nobody makes eye contact). We recommend this hotel. Read more

"Great location"
Very close to train station-we walked to hotel-but was on a small alley type street so was hard to find. Ideal spot since close to many restaurants, water taxi and great shopping just a few steps away. No elevator in hotel and we had a lost of luggage so we were able to just take what we needed and stored rest at front desk. Room was a little musty […] but the hotel informed me it was because we were on the first floor. Beds were comfortable and breakfast was wonderful. Many choices on the buffet. Read more

"Reasonable and Nice hotel in Venice"
Not impressive from the outside, and no elevator, but there are many positives to this hotel. 1) Very clsoe to the train station and bus station 2) Nice breakfast. Beautiful courtyard with shaded tables and chairs. 3) Free wireless internet that worked great. "Old and creepy--but hey, it's Venice. . ."
My wife and I stayed here for two nights during our 12-night honeymoon in Europe. The hotel is only 200 yards or so from the train station or a 10-minute walk from the bus station where airport buses drop you off. It's right next to a vaporetto stop, so it's convenient for getting to Rialto and St Mark's Square but a pretty long walk to those places. We […] were greeted by a very friendly man at check-in who told us it was our lucky day--we were the last to check in and we ended up with the largest room in the hotel. Indeed the room was enormous even by U.S. standards. Probably 700 square feet or so. It had a king bed and two singles and you could probably play floor hockey in between the furniture. But size isn't everything. . .the room was downright creepy. Old dirty red and gold fabric on the walls, a bathroom door that wouldn't close all the way, and a mattress that was like a hammock. I understand that Venice is supposed to be about old-world charm, but this just made us uncomfortable. Plus we had the pleasure of being awakened both mornings at 7:30 by very loud church bells nearby that must have rang for five minutes straight. I'd recomend this hotel for a short stay only. To be comfortable in Venice, you either need to spend a lot more money or stay on the nearby island of Lido. Read more
