It would have been helpful to know that the hotel was performing maintenance on the plumbing the night of our stay. We made the reservation the morning of our stay. The hotel shut off water to all the rooms from 11:00PM to 6:00AM. The hotel offered my husband and I and our 2 kids 2 bottles of 16 oz water to use during the shut off. We were traveling with a 2 year old and 5 month old. You can never be sure with kids when you'll need water. In addition when the water was turned back on at 6:00am, it was brown and filled with piping deposits. I know that it is normal to have some, but I let the hot water run from 6:00am to 7:45am and it was still there. We had to leave so we just gave up on waiting for the water to clear. We could not take a shower and I could not wash the kids. The worst part of this experience was that when we were checking out, I told the front desk associate about the water. Her response to me was, " Oh well, other rooms are okay." What a horrible experience!

The price of this 3.5 Star hotel was very inviting. But the hotel is very old and ordinary. The rooms look and feel old. All the furniture looks worn out, the carpets are dated. Fridge has no stock of anything. To call water into the room costs $16 per bottle. Layout of room very weird. Funny sounding wake up call.

Room carpet and walls were old and worn. Bathroom (tub, soap dish) was not clean. I complained to the front desk, but the clerk was unconcerned and did nothing to correct the complaint while we were out for 4 hours. Bed was very comfortable, and the hotel bar is a classic--it's part of why we wanted to stay there. Next time we will stay in a more updated hotel and just visit the bar.

The Roosevelt is an old hotel which is generally well kept up. Excellent beds, bedding, bathroom and amenities. Staff is courteous and efficient. Location is outstanding. No strange smells (often a problem in older hotels). Rooms are big. This is notable because in NYC hotels often have rooms which are just too small. Breakfast at the hotel is superb, but like all NYC hotels breakfast is not cheap. Plenty of excellent restaurants at all price-points near the hotel. My only complaint was that there were two large stains on the carpet (room 605?) which looked like they were from coffee and cranberry juice. I stay here frequently and will continue to do so.

The hotel is in a great location. The place is walking distance from Times Square and most of the Broadway Theaters. It has a very welcoming feel to it because of the large lobby area. Front desk personnel are very friendly. We were also lucky that we got upgraded to a larger room! As what you expect from an old building, the rooms and bathroom are a bit small but that's what you should expect when going to New York anyway. If I will come back to New York, I will stay in this hotel again.

Hotel service continuously disappointed us. When we arrived, the porter was unhelpful and even worse, unfriendly. The hotel has paper cups in the room. When we asked for glasses, we were told they could only be provided by housekeeping and we would have to pay extra!! When we tried to take a cab to the airport, the doorman put us in the hotel car service (according to the manager it was not affiliated with the hotel) that he said was the same as a cab and took credit cards. When we got there, the driver first said he didn't take credit cards and then wanted to charge us extra for using a credit card. Who needs this?

We have stayed at the Roosevelt about 4 times in the past round thanksgiving. The location is perfect for us but I have to say I do think the quality of the service and the hotel's condition has declined abit over the last 5 yrs. For ex. we had a problem with our showers not getting hot 2 out of our 4 days there and when i called we got the "sorry it's an old hotel" .. "wait 10 mins. and try again". Only after my wife and I where late for Dinner did i ask to speak to the mgr. and she did offer us some financial compensation but again it was only after we were made to feel bad about not understanding. All that said, I would stay there again because it is a great Grand old NY city hotel in a unbeatable location.

Room was defintely dated and in need of a face lift. The bathroom shower curtain had a strong musty smell that permeated the area. The fitness center was pretty small and lacked equipment (plenty of treadmills, bikes and the like but little in the way of weight machines and room to work out). Also very irksome was the fact that the business center did not provide free internet access. Instead, it cost $0.37 per minute with a $3.00 minimum and the speed was incredibly slow such that the rates just kept racking up (in some cases it took over a minute to load my hotmail page). Just to print out a boarding pass cost about $3.40 ($3.00 for the time minimum and I believe it was $0.40 per page to print. The concierge should have at least provided the boaarding pass service for nothing, but that was a no go. I stopped at a location (not an internet cafe) down the street which had the same internet provider only the rate was $0.20 per minute. I didn't check the speed. I spent about $25 over 2 days just to check my emails (less than 20) and print a boarding pass.

I was never told.. before hand (so I can arrange other accommodations) that there were NYC street works that evening with never stopping "pneumatic (air) hammers" raising hell and that would be going on until 11:30pm (yes, half hour before midnight) just outside my window..(?) I called the front desk and I was told that it is not them...but the city...of course I knew it was not them, silly people. Anyway too late and too tired for changes (not that they offered)..I decided to watch TV instead of caching up with my beauty sleep lol. As I was getting comfortable.. I dropped a small round battery on the floor..and to my surprise when I went looking for it... Oh my god, what was under the beds and the end table where the safe rests ? Just let me tell you this, if there was a cleaning police they would have arrested the manager pull him by the ear and throw him out of the hotel like in the old far west movies when they threw drunks out the bar. They (Roosvekt owners) should be ashamed of themselves for the DIRT there in a supposedly decent NY hotel, no one had ever done any cleaning for ages underneath, just a superficial harried room vacuum and out the door. Then I started looking for other faults the shower head/nozzle was loose, someone had tried glue, but no go..lol The mirrors rusted, the towels not very clean, all in all a flea-bag with a grandiose lobby. I have stayed in the past a couple of times there and I always forget how crappy it is. I guess I forget because it suits me area wise...but never again

Two comments: On numerous visits the same doorman (name excluded) has been rude when asked for directions or assistance. He's also preoccupied with checking out every woman who walks down the street, practically panting and barking as they pass. The bar waiters are very slow so, I recommend eating at the bar. My friend and I stayed at the Roosevelt during Halloween/Marathon Sunday and we were very impressed at the beauty of the lobby and it's fantastic location. Upon arrival the desk staff were very, very polite and helpful to us. We checked our bags with no issues, the first bellman we encountered was polite but every one after that was terribly rude. They would do something simple for you and then follow you around, getting very close to you saying "thank you, thank you, thank you" wanting you to give them a tip. The first time we were unprepared as we had spent our cash on a cab, we went to look for an ATM but the bellman whispered hateful things under his breath and finally walked away from us so we decided not to give him a tip. From there on out every bellman we saw would ignore other guests just to follow us around trying to get money from us. This was completely rude and unprofessional. It made us feel uncomfortable and their behavior certainly did not warrant an extra tip. Aside from the rude bellmen the hotel was beautiful, the rooms were exactly what I expected them to be. I just wish that their staff members hadn't let such a poor taste in my mouth.
