The hotel location is perfect as it is right near to the circular quay train and ferry station which is central to most tourist things in Sydney i.e. The opera house, sydney habour bridge. We stayed in the ocean harbour view room so we had excellent views of the opera house. It was so nice we didn't even want to leave the hotel. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and always very helpful.

As expected, the Shangri-la delivered. Would recommend booking their club level rooms - nice to relax in the lounge with complimentary drinks and appetizers in the evenings. Good location - walking distance to Circular Quay and The Rocks area. The views out of the window were spectacular - both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera house were in view. Their breakfast buffet is excellent - eggs made to order, Japanese and British breakfast items; definitely a nice way to start the day.

The hotel had a great location, with views of the Harbor Bridge and the Sydney Opera House from our room. Although people complain about the steep walk up the hill to walk back to the hotel, there are roundabout ways to get there that also get you around the Rocks area. Horizon Club is definitely recommended, as the service and views are top-notch. The hotel room furnishings, however, definitely needs some updating for a top-rated hotel: looks like furniture from the 1980's. The cleaning of our room upon arrival was also not quite up to par.

The hotel's lobby is nice, very welcoming. Staff is well trained and hospitable. Overall service of the hotel is very good. The location is ok, though at the CBD, it is not so close to the main shopping area, and you have to climb uphill a little to get to the main entrance - a bit tiring if you return hotel after a day of activities. Four Seasons is opposite Shang and is better in its location simply because you won't need to walk uphill, saving that little bit of workout. The room is very spacious, but decor is outdated (early 90s) and a bit worn out. The upholstery of the chair of the work station is broken, making it look a bit shabby. It's big, but doesn't give you the luxurious and pampered feeling (what one would expect of - considering the star-rating and rates of this hotel). The best thing about the hotel is, it offers complimentary in-room internet connection, which is a rare feature in similar hotels in Sydney.

The service and experience at this hotel was beyond our expectations. The staff is courteous, helpful, and responsive. We asked if a roll a way would fit into our room when we checked in. The desk said they would give us a junior suite so we could have two rooms. We were overwhelmed when we actually saw the spacious room with a breathtaking view of the city. We have travelled a lot and this room was larger than usual, and the amenities were better. For a change, the bathroom was large with a tub. The staff couldn't do enough for us. The location is great with the rocks areas within three blocks and the CBD a short 10 minute walk. The hotel overlooks a busy highway, but being on the 20th floor, we heard little noise. Some complain about the steep walk home from the rocks (and it is steep, with three long uphill climbs), but we just took a cab up the hill for $5 AU. It was well worth it to be so close to the harbor and to take a cab at the end of the day when we were tired. I would definitely recommend this hotel and stay there again.

Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Apr 1, 2009
We called ahead to make sure there was internet access since we needed it for business. 3 times the internet went down, and 3 times we were given different answers and different reasons for the failure, finding out later that none of these were true. We asked over and over to be moved to a different room where the internet would work, and finally were - so that issue was solved. The keys we were given to the new room were not working, and neither were the keys to the old room, in order for us to pack all our stuff up and move. Next, some $60 appeared on our account that we did not charge; after some investigation, however, these charges were removed.

Walking back to the hotel was a bit of a steep climb but it is ideally situated to explore The Rocks and the Sunday market. Wish we could have stayed longer!
