I cannot begin to tell you all how nice my stay was at The James. The beds were turned down for us every night and always made the next day. The staff was outstandingly kind and very generous. The James is also in the heart of the town. We couldn't have been any closer to all of the great restaurents and stores. Our doorman had also recommended the Grand Lux for breakfast. It was just steps away from our hotel and it was magnificent! I would highly recommend this hotel for all!

We stayed at The James when it was the Lenox. Now it is not even close to being on par with equally priced Hotels. Only once did a bellman open a door for my wife, we had to cart our luggage around, after being relocated at midnight because of a loud party on the second floor that woke us up on the 14th floor, walking through someone's marijuana fog from the adjacent room, the new and quiet room's t.v. didn't work. It was clean and the room's are modern but do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere.

My daughter and I stayed at the James Hotel the weekend before Thanksgiving 2009. The hotel was thee best hotel I have ever stayed in!!!! The sheets, towels, beds, pillows were the ultimate. Cleanliness, which is highest on my list, was absolutely taken care of. Service - they turned down our bed at night, left us a small snack, were ready at the concierge to help us. The exercise facility was supervised and huge for the hotel - more options than I have seen in other larger hotels. There is absolutely nothing bad I would say about this hotel. I would highly recommend it!!

The quality of room, skin care products, and service was excellent. If I could afford it, I would stay at no other hotel. Spent the first 3 nights of a 4 night visit at the Affinia (a sister hotel) and the last night at The James. This saved us money, but I wish we could have had all 4 nights at the James. We were treated with respect and kindness. LOVE The James

The James Hotel was a nice hotel just a block off the magnificent mile. Overall this is a nice hotel considering condition, value and location. While certainly not a top-tier hotel, it is only a small step behind with very reasonable rates. Room was comfortable and large. Only real negatives were that there is very little water pressure in the showers and the hallways are very dark and cluttered.

The location is convenient and the size of the hotel makes for a very relaxing stay. No crowds, waiting for the elevators etc. Very comfortable and invited bar and lobby with free computers/Internet. This was my second stay. My only suggestion is the lack of furniture in the rooms. The martini bar is nice but a small dresser and a mirror in the room would be convenient. The only mirror is in the bathroom.

The hotel came highly recommended to me by colleagues and friends, so I booked a three-night stay at the hotel for work last week. Though the housekeeping staff was fantastic and the rooms were clean and quiet, I will not be recommending this hotel to my friends or coworkers. Long story short, the staff needs to work on communication and competence -- they could not locate my car, which was valet parked at the hotel, for FORTY minutes, causing me to miss my flight and subsequent meetings for work. The entire forty minutes, there was no information on who was looking for my car or where it might be. For me, boutique hotels should focus on attention paid to guests and customer service; they can't compete with the larger, more luxurious hotels (like my favorite, the Peninsula) on other aspects of hotel management. But the James falls short by a mile. I will be returning to the Peninsula on my next trip to Chicago.

It's in a great location just 1 block from the Magnificent Mile and walking distance from most downtown sites. Even is you decide not to eat at the hotel there are lots of quick cheap bite places near by.

Great location, rooms are very well furnished, mostly friendly staff. My only complaint is that the concierge staff was completely useless. I called to make special arrangements since it was our honeymoon. The concierge seemed completely uninterested in helping, and I just ended up not using the service. Otherwise our stay at the James was great, I would definitely go back, but wouldn't bother with the concierge service.

Our stay at The James could not have been better. We arrived early and were able to be checked in early; there was always someone to greet us at the door/help with bags. Our room (and the hotel in general) was beautiful and clean with nice details throughout. Everything was replaced daily (at least) and there was even a unique and complementary turn-down service that included cookies! The hotel was across the street from a grocery store, very close to Michigan Ave. and only a couple blocks from the nearest subway station. Overall a very convenient, unique, and well-designed place to stay!

The James Hotel is clearly a cutting-edge hotel. The trendy fixtures, plasma TV, and techno music in the lobby create an atmosphere that surely appeals to a certain crowd. I am not a member of that crowd. My wife and I chose the James because it received high ratings from other hotels.com users and because the rate was competitive. If you are visiting Chicago and want the true Chi-town experience, this place is probably great. We, on the other hand, did not find the room to be particularly charming. The service was fantastic. The granite counter in the bathroom was pretty. I think the only way to explain why I disliked the experience is to say that we would not have stayed in the city if our vacation could have taken us to a sleepy little town somewhere. If you want to stay in the city and feel like you're in the city, stay at the James. If you're not "trendy," if you don't find pleasure in feeling like you just stepped into a caricature of urban yuppiness, you should probably stay elsewhere.

The James Hotel is in a great location just off Michigan Avenue. However, the price you pay for that is the noise! Room was of average size and bed/pillows were not comfortable. When the air conditioning was not on cool - there was a constant buzz and like an overheating smell would come from the vent. Had breakfast one morning in the Hotel. Service was extremely slow, order was incomplete and good was average.

Totally great hotel -- clean and super comfortable with very nice staff. Our only concern was their plumbing as our shower drain clogged up on the first day there. Althought they came to fix it immediately, it wasn't really fixed and we kept seeing black deposits left in the tub with a sewage smell...which we alerted them to but they only offered us an apology.

We booked 5 nights at The James after doing a fair amount of looking at other downtown Chicago hotels. We weren't quite sure what to expect but were excited to do some traveling. The room, with one king-sized bed, was clean but there were a lot of things to which I would have expected more attention to be paid, such as veneer coming off of the furniture, flaking paint in the bathroom, and a backed-up shower drain that had other people's hair protruding from it. One of the worst things was the duvet that had a cigarette burn in it, something reminiscent of the cheap road motels of my younger days. All of this was not expected in a relatively expensive hotel room. Perhaps the most unpleasant experience we had during our stay was when we called down to the front desk to ask a question and got a concierge who was very rude. Unfortunately we had to call again a short while later and had to deal with her a second time, again very rude. Many of the people at the James were very nice but we have already made up our minds that, next time we go to Chicago, we will not be staying at the James.

All the staff were attentive, friendly and efficient. the room was well equipped with large screen Tv and stereo system that took MP3 player input (good for music lovers). the bathroom was very good with one smal caveat, the inside sliding door handle/towel rack was not secure and flipped off now and again. The hotel is very central, just of Michigan Ave. and very close to most amenities and the EL or Metra. the breakfast and reataurant were also very high standard. Would definitely stay again. As cinema buffs we enjoyed the gene Siskel cinema on state street.
