It was very good that the hotel was located right across the street from Mercy Medical Center. Great location. The staff was very friendly and very helpful in getting around Des Moines.

This Holiday Inn is the best location to enjoy the 'West Bank' of Des Moines. A shuttle to/from the event centers, restaurants & bars is provided. The hotel is under renovation in the lobby, bar & restaurant area and is almost completed. The elevators, hallways & rooms are clean, but dated. The Saturday night we stayed, young kids there for gymnastics, […] a pool competition and a baseball team were staying, but thankfully on the lower floors.....ask for 9 or 10 if you want quiet. There was day old roomservice outside my door that was never collected (I assume from the guests who stayed in my room the night prior). We will NEVER stay at this hotel again. We picked it because it was close and because it was holiday inn and the holiday inns are always nice. Well not this one! The front desk man the night of our stay was discustingly rude and hung up on me and refused to talk to me. The furnace in the room couldnt keep the room warm and I found out later in the morning […] after I opened the drapes that were closed when we got there, the window had been cracked open. I shut the window and that is when I noticed that it was a huge window that hardly locked and had no bars or screens or anything on the door. it was a serious saftey concern that i had as we were on the 9th floor. They are in the middle of a renovation which is badly needed at this hotel. The room was clean but the bathroom was badly in need of an update. Windows are so old that they would not close so I got to hear the expressway traffic all night and early AM. If you stay I would recommend going to the upper floors to get away from the expressway or staying […] on the side that does not face downtown, especially if you are light sleeper. We had an event to go to at Wells Fargo event center and this was a very convenient location. We had a great view of the area out our window. However, it is located to a hospital so you do hear ambulances throughout your stay. There is construction going on throughout the hotel but we didn't notice any additional noise.

At 10 pm, when we laid down to sleep, the room next to us was extremely loud. We could hear their conversations. I called the front desk at 10:50 pm, as they had not quieted down at all. Twice more, I called by 11:15 as the room was loud. I went down to front desk afterward. They told me they were sending them from the hotel. Apperantly they just shipped […] them to a bar because they came back at 2:30 am and were making a rukus in the hallways. I went down two more times to the front desk to complain. At 3:30 I called again and told the front desk to remove them or I would call the city police. The hotel offered a half refund but they still have not sent one. Read more

Absolute worst hotel I've stayed in, in years. (and I travel 30% of the year) The hotel staff was so uuninspiring I felt like I was interrupting their poker game when I checked in late afternoon. The room was facing downtown, but what they didnt tell me is that there was a highway in between. No big deal as long as the windows would absorb ANY of the […] sound produced by the cars. Well, the don't so you'll be hearing traffic go buy all night long. Hopefully it's a quiet night but don't count on it as the hospital is fairly close and ambulances including their sirens are included in the highway traffic. Could not believe how noisy it was!! We booked a King bed for a kids free weekend and ended up with two double beds...I called the front desk they said they didn't have any Kings left. I got no apologies. We had super in the restaurant while the service was great the food was not. Also since this is close to the hospital you will hear A LOT of ambulance going by all night long.

I thought the room was very clean and beds comfortable. It is an older hotel but I was satisfied. I was there for a concert at the Wells Fargo Arena and the location is very close and within walking distance. The staff was very friendly as well.

Upon arrival, they wouldn't let us switch cards to pay for the hotel from the one that I thought I had just held the room with... It was not made clear at time of booking that my payment was already made at time of booking online. I stayed at the hotel this past week for a conference. Staff was top-notch and the hotel was what you would expect for this level of accommodation. Clean rooms, decent facilities, etc... Only real issue is the fact that there is NOTHING around this place. Conference hall was within walking distance, but that helps very little as there is NOTHING around […] the conference center. No restaurants, no bars, no convenience stores, no shopping.... just something to consider if you are without a car rental. This was my first visit to Des Moines and my stay at the hotel was wonderful. I was picked up at teh airport by their shuttle and did not have to wait very long for them, the gentlemen that drove me to the hotel was very nice. This was a really comfortable and convenient place to stay. No stress at all - I loved the breakfast down in the cafe - had to pay a little for it but it was well worth it. The staff was friendly and helpful with directions, which I needed ! I would stay here again for sure !

I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn in Downtown Des Moines while attending the State Fair with my family. Our room was clean and the staff friendly, but my overall impression of the Hotel is that it is run-down. The decor was dated and looked stale. The bathroom drains didn't work properly, the pillows weren't comfortable, and there was no fan cover […] the sound of the interstate outside the window. Overall, I did not enjoy my stay. Overall it was really nice and clean. The only meal we ate there was breakfast and we had room service and it was hot and there were large portions ~ great food for the prices!! The hotel is right off of the interstate and just north of downtown. It seems like they recently did a mild renovation. The bed and furniture were newer, but the bathrooms weren't new for example. They gave two sets of pillows: firm and soft and even some little mints... a pleasant surprise.
