"Nice surprise in downtown Victoria"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 1, 2012
I was pleasantly surprised by the Executive House. I booked last minute and many places were full - so my expectations were not high. But the hotel was very centrally located. The room was clean, good sized, and well furnished. It had been updated, the linens and towels were good quality, and there was a full kitchenette. About the only complaint I had was that it's an older building with no AC. The room got a bit warm and night and we had to open the window and use a thoughtfully supplied fan. It was not too hot outside, so I can imagine it might be a bit stifling in the summertime.

"Howard Johnson, Victoria BC-near downtown"
This hotel is in a good place. The room we stayed in was a home office suite and it was very comfortable. There are lots of different types of suites and rooms for all needs. The swimming pool is a good size. You have to go to the front desk to get pool towels and you don't know that until you are in the pool room so you end up walking to the front […] desk in a swimsuit which was a little disconcerting. There is no hot tub or sauna. The exercise equipment was adequate if you are the only one wanting to exercise, one bike and one weight machine. We enjoyed our stay. Everything was good quality. The heat was centrally controlled by the hotel which was a problem for us. It was too hot to sleep. The other drawback was the towels were on the rough side. But overall it is a good room for the price and location. Read more
"Howard Johnson Hotel on Gorge in Victoria"
Was very disappointed to arrive at this hotel and find that we needed to produce a $250 damage deposit. Wish someone had let us know in advance,. The first morning we awoke and went top make coffee and found an old full moldy coffee filter in the coffeemaker. Not impressed. After the morning shower we noticed the bathroom sink filling up with water […] from up the drain. Filthy water that kept coming up to the point we thought it would overflow, and the toilet was leaking , so the bathroom floor had a constant puddle. After mentioning it to the front desk, we were moved to a different room which also had an old moldy filter in the coffeemaker. Our new room was right next to the side entrance which was used constantly, and every time the door closed, it slammed and the wall would shake, keeping us up all night. We ultimately decided we would not ever return to this hotel. Read more
Hotel is not in City Center. It's about 3 miles away - but only 1 block from bus line and right across the street is the Galloping Goose trail for walking or biking. The new owners of the Pub within the hotel are very nice. They had just opened when we were there.
"Howard Johnson's - Victoria BC"
Nice hotel for general purpose. Great deal if you just want a place to sleep as we did, we were not on vacation to hang at the hotel. Not too far from downtown and City transit is excellent if you don't want to drive and look for parking. There is a resturant/bar but not affiliated with the hotel so no room service, again we were not there to hang at […] the hotel. Read more
"Solid hotel, decent location and price"
I would recommend this place especially if you get the suite like we had which has a complete kitchen. It is about 2 miles from the downtown inner harbor area and on a major bus line. Comfortable beds and a decent pool for the kiddos.
"Howard Johnson Victoria"
The room was clean and comfortable. We would have stayed more days in this motel if we hadn't stayed somewhere else. The lounge was quiet and had good food at a great price. We absolutely loved their wings and microbrews!!
"Bad customer service but nice hotel in a good spot"
The front desk lady was pretty rude to us on multiple occassions when we first checked in and then throughout our stay there. She seemed very uniteristed to be there, and to answer any of our questions or to help us out in any way. The hotel was great though. Slept well and enjoyed the room. Located right across the street from a walking path that can […] take you all the way out to the harbor, and its within minutes of downtown when driving. Read more

"Howard Johnson in Victoria"
This hotle offered a good rate. It was fairly close to downtown (2-4 miles). This is an older hotel. The room was clean but bare bones. Wish there would have been an am continental breakfast.
"Don't do it!!!"
Pros: Coin Laundry on site. Cons: Not down town - needed to rent a car. Would not allow early check in, got off the ferry at noon, but had to sit in lobby for a few hours until a room was cleaned. Pool closes at 9pm - no hot tub. Small uncomfortable beds. Computer in lobby has no printer. Extremely loud heater/ac unit. Crappy Shower head. No ceiling […] lights in room, only a lamp! Read more
"distance of hotel from downtown Victoria"
Hotel is fine but it is a 40 mins walk from downtown so it is too far
"Howard Johnsons, Victoria"
I really appreciated finding this hotel, modest but very adequate in a relatively quiet spot not too far out of the downtown core.
"Howard Johnson Hotel Victoria, BC"
This is clearly an older hotel and somewhat rundown. The rooms themselves were comfortable and clean but with very little lighting. The hotel is a convenient five minute drive to downtown Victoria. Park outside downtown or take a bus if you want to avoid paying for parking downtown. The staff are friendly and helpful. All-in-all it's a decent place […] to stay if money is an issue. Personally, I would consider paying a little extra for one of the several other hotels in the area the next time I visit. Read more

"Pleasant upgrade surprise"
Due to the fact that a swim team wanted a block of rooms, we were upgraded (sans cost to us) to an executive suite. This as a very pleasant surprise.
"A Sensible Mid-Range Choice"
When I was growing up, "HoJo's" was very much considered merely a wayside stop -- a place to hang your head whose chief value was the cash you saved by staying there. You expected to pull off the highway, check in, hit the sack, get up the next morning and go; extras like a fitness center or restaurant were out of the question. Certainly the only reason […] to specifically book a vacation at a HoJo's under that era's thinking would have been that otherwise, you wouldn't be able to go away at all. So it was with some trepidation that I booked a nine-day getaway at this property. And I was pleasantly surprised. This is definitely NOT your daddy's HoJo's! For less than I have ever paid in Victoria before I got MORE amenities than I ever have before: free WiFi, an HD TV positioned thoughtfully so as to be easily and comfortably viewable from bed, an ironing board and iron, minifridge, little microwave, fully provisioned bathroom, daily service (with twice weekly sheet change) -- even room service I only later discovered was supposed to be off for the season. Staff were well-informed, nice and accommodating. Indeed, my one gripe is with their sky-high long distance phone rates. This is to be expected these days, though, and to their credit, my inquiry about this to the management produced a complete write-off of all my LOCAL calls, which otherwise would have cost no more than they would from Victoria's (now almost nonexistent) payphones. One other issue to be aware of is that this hotel is not right downtown. If you have (or rent) your own car, this shouldn't be a problem at all. But if you are dependent on public transport and intend to go bar hopping, think again, or be prepared to call cabs a lot. Overall, then, I'd recommend this place. It's in a quiet neighborhood, professionally run and very well appointed for this class of establishment. Read more
"Shabby and gross"
This hotel was a dump. The room had a terrible odor, the carpets and aphostery were old and seedy and the air conditioner roared so loud we couldn't sleep. We booked it because it was in Victoria but it turned out to be a drive of several miles to town. It was so bad we almost left and forfeited our money.
"good hotel"
we got a very good price. the room was nice and for the brief time we were there, there were no problems. The bathroom showed its age but was clean. I would use again if in victoria. was a short drive to most victoria attractions.
"Great Room For the Money"
The best part was the Hotel personel, from the Front Desk, Cleaning Crew to the Maintenance personel, all were helpful and freindly. The hotel was old, but clean with some improvements, i.e. flat screen tv. 400ct sheets. The hotel rooms listed on Hotel.com all faced the parking lot...but was not surprise for the good price we received. The neighborhood […] was a little "if-e". But, all in all the hotel was better then we expected. Read more
Excellent, great prices, handy to downtown Victoria, good service.
"Mini suite rocked"
I was very happy, the room was super clean, tops of pictures dusted. Pool was great. Just a thought I had, while we were there I noticed alot of guests smoking (not a negative),there was an unused patch of grass in back of the parking lot, a medium gazebo with the sand fire proof ashtray would be nice & I hope inexpensive :-). "Howard Johnson on Gorge rd"
the FULL kitchen didn't have any dishes to cook food in the oven...very dissapointed
"Excellent place to stay."
I had a mini suite that was excellent. The hotel is on a bus route and close enough to downtown for a scenic walk. The facilities were clean and well maintained. I will stay here again.
"Howard Johnson Hotel - Victoria - Vancouver Island"
Well the hotel was a reasonable rate - and was listed on the website as 3 star - though it was 2 star in reality. So I was not expecting high standards or holding it to unreasonable expectations. Loud music and Karaoke in the bar on a Friday night; basic furnishing in the room; noisy air-conditioning that keeps you up all night; a cheap coffee maker […] that spills when you make it - I can forgive all that, it's within the price range. However, the standard of cleanliness in the swimming pool was appalling !The water was murcky and muddy and cold (this was in August). Neither do I expect to be given worn, dirty pool towels that don't perform their basic function of being able to dry. The changing rooms did not have any chairs. I did not bring this to the attention of the hotel - there were no staff at reception. The other big problem with the place was the misleading statement - 10 mins from the centre of Victoria. It was a 15 minute drive or a 45 minute walk with no adequate public transport. This should have been made clear on the website when booking. Read more

"Good value"
Nice hotel, excellent rates, friendly front desk staff. A little hard to find the first time but really not too far from the downtown core by car, I would definitely recommend it.
We stay at this hotel most months. It is a very good value for the money, and the location is close to those I need to visit. The staff are friendly and efficient.
"Howard Johnson Gorge rd e"
I booked this hotel based soley on the price due to my stay length of a week. The bed was comfy but the room and hotel are quite dated. Carpet in the room was stained and old but no bad smells. Room was dark and quiet except on the weekend when the band was playing in the pub downstairs and they had to door open. I had a kitchen suite which was in good […] working order and equiped well enough. Microwave was small and really old.. as was tv... but both worked fine. This was the least expensive hotel I could find within a 5 min drive to downtown (or less) and for the price, I would stay there again. ** I did not go to the pub, or the pool area so I cant comment on that. I was concerened about the area/hotel when I first arrived and was worried about leaving my truck in the parking lot. But I had no problems at all. Except the room cleaners didnt replace my in room coffee 1 morning... but I left a note to ask for more and it wasnt a problem again. I did find the water rather smelly, possibly chlorine... but that might just have been from the city in general. Read more
"Howard Johnson Hotel on Gorge Rd. Victoria BC."
We found that the heat was not working and asked for a portable heater. Underneath the drape valance there were a lot of cobwebs. The room has not been updated and it shows. I would not recommend this hotel.
"nice stay"
very comfortable as always with most HoJo i stayed in. staff friendly and knowledgeable with surroundings. happy with the price as well... the place is a bit dusty and lighting a bit dim; somewhat expected that :) ,but overall, everything is allright try not to complain too much when travelling and try to be fine with everything (unless too unreasonable). […] really enjoyed the stay. thx~~ Read more
"Nice people, but not so great of a hotel"
I guess it really is true that you get what you pay for. I chose this hotel as it stated to be in the city centre - and perhaps it was, but its not the tourist centre. Although it was close enough that we could get to the wharf in 15 min (driving) so not bad that way. The room itself however was dirty, there were long dark hairs all over the bathroom, […] the toilet did not flush and there was a bulb missing from the fixture. The bedding was from the 70's and when we turned on the A/C it filled the room with a urine/sweaty odor. I found a bug casing on one of the beds - but the sheets did appear clean. The lounge was crowded with locals and not enough seating or staff to accomadate the actual guests of the hotel. It was almost half the cost of other hotels in Victoria though and since we only went there to sleep, we stuck it out. If you want a really nice hotel though - spend the extra money. The lobby staff was nice. Read more

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The shower was great! We were in a pet friendly room... Inside was great but the outside area needed to be hosed down, weeds pulled, and the individual pet areas separated from each other. Overall we were pleased with the parking and the service we recieved.

"Howard Johnson Downtown Victoria"
Hotel staff was very pleasant but the room was not great - not as clean as I would have like it to be. With a full kitchen, we had no dish soap, one fork, two spoons. Very HOT in the room - difficult to sleep.
"Howard Johnson's in Victoria British Columbia"
OVerall, it was a good experience. It was an older hotel, but it was clean, close to downtown, expecially for the tourist venues. A lot of restaurants were close by, and they knew a lot of the area events and had brocures.

"Wouldn't recommend it"
The shower didn't work. It was impossible to take a shower. The temperature of the water was either scalding hot or freezing. The air conditioner was extremely noisy. I was not able to sleep.
"Howard Johnson Victoria"
This was great for some one on a budget, good location to public transit and path/bike to the inner harbor. Room came with two queen bed full kitchen and bathroom. This is a handicapped accessible facility with good parking space. I really like the proximity to the bike path which leads to down town or to the store. Also quiet neighborhood except for […] the main road during work hrs. the room had a TV and comes with free Wifi. It has laundry facility and an indoor pool. I spent a lot of time site seeing but it was nice to come home to a spacious hotel and relax. Would return to this in the future and recommend it to friends and family. Read more
"Travel on a Budget"
My first hotel room was dirty - the floor had not been vacuumed and I was not pleased however, when I called the front desk they upgraded my room to an executive suite at no extra charge. This is not a snazzy hotel, and the bar does not serve food after 10pm, but it will do if you are on a budget.

"Good value for money"
This hotel is nothing fancy but it has mini suites - 2 double beds, desk and kitchen in one room. This is a good deal for families because there is an indoor pool and fitness room included in the price, plus free parking and a place to barbeque and picnic outside. The location is walking distance to nothing, but a short drive to downtown.
