Premier Copacabana Hotel - Rio de Janeiro

Hotels in Rio are much of a muchness, you get very similar hotels at very similar prices. This one is just that, if slightly above average. Not the best, not the worst - I book it for its proximity to the metro which is just across the street.

The staff were helpful and spoke good English. They were able top rpovide information on the issues I asked about (ATMs/ Banks, activities in the area, cabs and transport to the airport). They also sorted out the pressing of my clothes for my meetings very promptly. The hotel is very close to Copacabana beach and close to all the shops.

The Hotel was very disappointing. They include breakfast, however they do not have a restaurant where you can go and sit down at other times a day. They do not have hair dryers (sorry, they have 3 for the whole hotel, they lend it to you, and call you 1/2 hr. later asking for it to lend it to another guest); they don't have irons, and they can not lend […] you one; you have to give them your clothes for them to iron it (at a charge of course). They charge you for internet (by the minute). On a different note, I took a package to give to a friend's daughter who is studing portugueese for a few months in Brazil, and they did not let her go up to my room (they said that was hotel rules), I had to go downstaris to give her the package. The Premier is a great place to stay in a quiet, boutique hotel within a very easy walk of Copacabana Beach. There are restaurants, snack shops, banks with ATMs within a block or two of the hotel. The rooms although not huge are well arranged and in excellent condition. The beds are a bit firm, but comfortable. I was not impressed with my stay at this hotel. The front deskman really made my stay a hassle. Check in took about 20 minutes, simple requests (like did I receive any mail?) were instantly denied. (I found out the next day I had indeed received important mail and they had signed for it.) The front desk also routinely tried to scam me, "I have a great […] deal on a ticket, only for you". I later found out, it was 300 Reals overpriced. Would you like to use the safe in your room? 15 Reals extra per night. How about the high speed internet in your room? It will cost you extra. Besides the workers at the front desk, the hotel was decent with a few highlights. The room was comfortable but nothing special. The continental breakfast was excellent and I went back for seconds multiple times. The cleaning staff was helpful and kind. I would not recommend this hotel to others which is a shame because it could have been a place I would visit again if it wasn't for the people at the front desk. Bad customer service by the reception. I got the feeling they did not want a foreign traveler in the hotel. I never received a single good morning, good afternoon, or any such verbal greeting. Hotel is in a good location and only a 10 minute walk to the beach, I would suggest staying in Ipanema vs Copacopana as there seems to be more bars/restaurants if your looking for a more lively trip. The pool is small but has a nice view and doesnt seem to close so we spent a few late nights hanging out at the pool. Its safe and really close to the subway, which is very easy to use and safe. Some would say that this hotel is in need of a refurbishment. Indeed the countertops for all the furniture in the room were a dusty gray in color and it looked as if everything was covered with a layer of dust. But in reality the room was very clean -- no dust. The bed was very firm which I like. The bathroom fixtures were getting long in the tooth, […] but everything worked very well. No flushing problems, no leaks. And the shower was great -- very good flow, lots of hot water and stable temperatures. My room was very quiet. I heard no noise from the adjoining rooms except for a very faint sound when somebody flushed his/her toilet. My room faced a busy street but there was an inner set of windows to help quell the noise. The included breakfast buffet was quite satisfactory for me. Overall the food quality was good. It included scrambled eggs and bacon, but no chef to prepare omelettes or eggs to order. Two slight complaints about the breakfast service: the cloth table cloths were clean at 6AM but they had a few stains by the time I normally ate around 8:30 AM. And on several mornings, my coffee had a slight oily film on top. The free wireless wifi signal was a bit weak and unreliable in my room. When I needed reliability I carried my laptop to the second floor business center where the free wifi signal was strong and reliable. Overall I was quite satisfied with my stay. The hotel is in a very convenient location for shopping, catching public transit and eating out. The subway metro station is right across the street so it is easy to get to Ipanema and other areas. The Premier Copacabana lived up to the other reviews. It was a decent price compared to the other hotels, and short walking distance to the beach. The breakfast was pretty good and there was a lot of selection. I personally did not like the coffee at all, so I asked the servers to make me tea and they did every morning. The room was spacious and clean, […] but the beds and pillows were not very comfortable, though it didn't ruin my stay. Since our room faced the street, there was often a lot of noise, even when the window was closed. The flat screen tv was a really nice addition. Though it is listed as only about 4 blocks from the beach, the walk is long and the streets are crowded so it takes several minutes to get there. The front desk team were extremely helpful and spoke English well. They made arrangements for us per our requests, called us cabs, and explained walking directions and what areas to avoid. However, when we asked for restaurant recommendations, we were often given very touristy recommendations including one of the kilo places that was twice the price of the others in the same area. I would say that people should talk to locals and ask where the good bars and restaurants are. We got much better tips from local patrons at restaurants and 20-30 year old waiters on where to hang out. We had absolutely no issues with security during the one week we stayed there. We went to the beach at night (well, Av Atlantica) where the vendors set up booths and sold their products and never had any issues. We were cautious of course, but never felt as though we were in danger or saw any questionable people. Read more

I picked this hotel because the room rate was in the range that I wanted to pay and it was only four or five blocks back from Copacabana beach. Plus the reviews didn't sound too bad. When I got there I discovered that Rue Tonelero and all the other streets around are basically a racetrack. Poor civic planning funnels a million cars a day through those […] streets and they are choking with Bangkok grade pollution. So straight up if I could do it over I'd pay more and get a hotel on the beach where there is fresh air. Also it can be a bit dodgy walking back through the streets to the hotel at 2.30am. The hotel lobby looked nice. I checked in and was quite surprised when they informed me that there was a daily charge to use the in-room safe! (I'm not kidding). I took the elevator to my room. Elevator kinda slaps around as it gets going which is novel. The hotel doesn't have central air so the corridors are hot. For the price the room was pretty basic in fit & finish. Everything worked and it was clean but the box air conditioner in the window was loud so I had to turn it off at night. Good size lcd tv and a minibar fridge. Bathroom was good. The desk overcharged me for a tour. I only found out because the other people on the tour told me how much they paid. DO NOT have dinner in the hotel dining room - basket of stale bread + bowl of boiled onion rings (onion soup apparently) + cold greasy pork mince on spag. Couldn't eat it. On the positive side the hotel has a nice rooftop pool with a good view. Also the breakfast buffet is very good. Top marks to whoever organizes this meal. The free internet worked. I tried the paid (in theory faster) internet for one day but it didn't seem much faster so I didn't bother after that. The concierge speaks English but none of the other staff do. Very rude staff. When we checked into this hotel, the receptionist (Antoine) swear several times and then he and the porter laughed and spoke in portuguese. Very rude especially given that we don't understand the language and they could be talking about us. its just so rude, it was an immediate turn off to come to this hotel. Would i stay there again. NO. a bad experience – the check in really turned us off and charging things that are supposed to be free.
