"Great hotel walkable distance to sights and dining"
Great older hotel located in an excellent neighborhood, walking distance to museums and restaurants. Rooms were clean and comfortable. The hotel is gently worn as you would expect and older hotel to be. Staff was very friendly and helpful.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful historic hotel"
We really enjoyed our stay. The architecture in the hotel lobby was amazing and it continued into our room. The bathroom was small, but quaint with a painted ceiling that was simply charming. The bed was a bit on the soft side and while there were tons of pillows on the bed, they were just a little over the size of a piece of paper. Room service from […] Il Fornaio was very good and the gentleman who brought our tray was very accommodating. We were told that the hotel would soon become a large chain brand and that these things would be changed out. I hope that the hotel doesn't lose its charm. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Romantic and Classic"
The only complaint was that sometimes the lobby smelled of the sewer. Hopefully this will be fixed during their ongoing renovations. Loved our junior suite, it was a free upgrade, perfect for our anniversary. The old style door knobs and bathroom floor tiles were classic. Loved the painted mural on bathroom ceiling. The king sized bed wasn't that comfy, […] but the room was spacious, including a fire place. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
It was a great stay, we expected a vintage look and thats exactly what we got. The only thing I would do different is request a street view to see the street corner.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Too expensive for what you get!!!!"
Rude staff, room was old and too small, got charged extra for my 10 year old to sleep in our room. Restaurant inside is very expensive with rude and awful service with incompetent staff - no need to act like you are a five star hotel in Dubai!!!! believe me you have a long way to go. No breakfast, got kicked out of valet or they would have charged us […] to leave our car parked after we checked out (our girls were still playing volleyball). there is nowhere to sit and have a cocktail after the restaurant closes. next time I will save my money and go to a place where parking is free, breakfast and smiles are served. Great hotel but happy I'd read the reviews. Bring a pair of earplugs or just let the fan run all night. Walls are thin BUT the hotel is charming, staff was great and a wonderful restaurant. Right across the street from the convention center. Worth $29/day parking fee not to have to get in the car!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Will Stay Again"
Great place to stay in downtown San Jose. Clean and comfortable room; nice view, great food from room service, nice (small) exercise facility. Two minor issues: The fan for the AC / Heater sounds like a slow moving freight train when it is on and the server for our room service meal placed the dessert (ice cream) on top of a hot entree plate and it […] mostly melted. Have stayed here twice before, and will stay again in the future. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The room was smaller then I expected and the shower did not have hot water, overall it was OK nothing specialGenuine Hotels.com guest review
very friendly at the entry and check in. i asked for a room on the upper floor. the highest was 6 but we were put on the 5th floor due to renovations on the 6th floor. the room was clean. it had a very nice nostalgic feel to it. the bathroom ceiling was highlighted with blue w/ white clouds & butterflies. a couple things that was thumbs down was 1, […] the bed, it seemed it could've been over 10 years and 2, we picked up the noise level of ambulance or firetrucks because the room faced the streets. otherwise it was nice Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The room we stayed in was just okay... I know this is an older hotel, but i guess i expected a little more. First, we weren't able to book a 1 king bed room, instead we got 2 doubles. The room itself was really small with the 2 beds. Not much room between the edge of the bed, and the desk in the room. Stubbed my toe on the chair...We asked for toothpaste […] and an extra laundry bag to be brought up to our room, we waited an hour for these items, and were never brought. We figured they would be outside our door upon our return, and that was not the case. I assume no one ever came. That was disappointing. Overall, an "okay" stay. Excellent with exception of bathroom. Light switch was dirty and some mold on tile in shower. Had dinner in restaurant- excellent.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Excellent location with afordable rates"
There was just one thing. The walls must have been a little thin as one night the person in the next room was talking on the phone and it was very loud and easy to hear.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"St. Claire Hotel is nasty, dirty and very stinky"
It was the worst experience I've had. The place is nasty. It's dirty, stinky, noisy and has molds in the bathroom. Will not stay again...Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Clean, friendly staff. My only pet peeve with this place was check out is at noon so don't come bugging until noon. Seemed as if the maids were in a rush to get us out! Not to mention the maintenance man came bugging 1 minute later! Walls are thin but all in all not badGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Liked it overall"
We stayed at this hotel when going to an event at the SAP center. Love the location, its a close walk to most venues downtown. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly at check-in giving us recommended places to go without even our having to ask. the restaurant downstairs was terrific and delicious. The hotel itself has kept a lot of the charm of […] its age (the lobby fixtures, brass mail chute and staircases for example.) While the rooms and bathrooms are updated but still have the original tiling and wood vanities. A couple of things I do recommend, my room had some large stains on the carpeting, so a good steam clean would do wonders there. The beds are comfortable but old so they make a lot of noise, mine squeaked with every movement made. Also due to the age the walls do not seem very insulated so you can hear everything in the neighboring rooms. While that may not be an issue if the people in them are quiet, if not it will affect your experience. I thought the hotel was charming and really enjoyed my stay overall. I would stay here again. "Boutique....not so sure"
There's nothing really special or standoutISH for this hotel. The guy at the front desk had no personality, the rooms were ok & rather small, but nothing that made it stand out. I felt at this price I could've gotten a room at Hampton Inn.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We were staying at the Sainte Claire for my daughters volleyball tournament. Right next door to convention center so location was great. Room was small but nice. Walls paper thin and could hear everything in other room. Since we had 5:30 am wake up was very frustrating not to sleep well . Also my daughters bed squeaked so every time she she moved it […] made squeaking noises. Also valeted the car and sent text as they advise so ready to pick up. Took 20 mins to find the valet and then he could not find our car. Very frustrating. Do not think we would stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Wonderful old hotel that feels very modernized. Short cab ride to the arena. Original Joes is at the end of the block for the best food and cocktails around. We'll be back!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"way to expensive and with a lot of phantom charges"

"Old and smelly"
The lobby smells like mildo or sewage depending on what time of day. I was on the third floor and it always smelled slightly of sewage..Don't know why...The AC was LOUD but the room was nice. The bed had some kind of plastic protector under the sheets which was weird and made sleeping a little uncomfortable. I thought maybe it was for bed bug protection […] but was afraid to ask for fear they would tell me it was. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very, old interior, but clean and comfortable"
Most other reviews highlight this, but the rooms really are so outdated. The carpet is mottled from various water stains and the bathroom counter is a chipped old board, sort of like a school desk from the 60s. The walls are whisper thin and the water pressure in the shower was low. But the mattress was new and comfortable, and the toiletries are from […] Occitane. The staff was polite. Beautiful hotel and great location to the conference center and downtown. The room was nice but the walls are paper thin, I could hear the people next door sit on their bed. Also, no mattress pad on the bed, just a thin sheet over the mattress. Is this ok?Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"front desk, incredibly rude."
The hotel is beautiful, has a funny smell though in the lobby. The valet staff is great. The room, while small is gorgeous. The bathroom has a huge tub,, and beautiful. The front desk person who helped us, Robert, so rude. I called to ask to add my boyfriend's name to our reservation. He gave me such an attitude about calling hotels.com that I really […] wanted to cancel our stay. When I asked to speak to a manager, not because of this issue but because he was being so rude, he refused to put one on. The next morning when I called down to check out, again attitude with telling us to get out of the room so the maids could come clean up after us. He made us feel like we were such problems guests, and we had trashed the room. I will never stay in this hotel again because of the treatment by this person. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"overall good stay"
Was there for a JT concert,so only stayed a night. Overall good. Took awhile to sign in and get keycard. Had the supreme king room and it was a really small room, expected more. Don't spend the extra on the "supreme room". Did have a great view of the city and very clean.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel smelled like diapers, through the entire hotel. Walls are thin and you can hear every word your neighbors say. Nice decor, pretty hotel, but not my thing.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient for Convention Events"
The location is perfect for attending events at the San Jose Convention Center. Hotel could use some updating which I think they are gradually doing. Old style architecture and charm. Intricate moldings and other touches that you don't see at modern hotels. Very quite and it seems like there is good insulation between the rooms. However, they do need […] to do some updating as things are looking a bit worn. Downside is there is no self parking, only valet parking so to self park you need to park elsewhere at another lot. I would stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Character and class in San Jose"
I've stayed at the Sainte Clair previously and if you're looking for something a little different than the ultra-modern hotel, this is a great choice. The staff were very helpful and the room was great. They're in the process of updating the property but it still feels like you've stepped back in time to a more elegant period.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Historic Hotel a beauty"

"Relaxing in San Jose"
Walking into the hotel was very pleasant. Staff was very courteous and engaging. The room was very clean and appealing. After settling in; however, we noticed that the types of amenities we had expected for 4 star hotel, were not there. "Service needs a serious upgrade"
The Saint Claire is a gorgeous classic, beautifully restored. Too bad the service didn't match. I advise management to invest in service training for EVERYONE. It's not that the service was poor. "Conveniently Located in Downtown SJ"
In town for both business and leisure with friends. In SJ for work, a Shark's game , golf and a visit to the Tech Museum. The only time I used my car after I checked in was to go to work. Other than that, it was walking distance to the Tech Museum and to SAP Arena to watch the Sharks play. Lots of places to eat and have drinks....Fairmont Lobby bar, […] McCormick and Schmidts, Chicago Pizza place off of San Fernando. The only thing I had a problem with is the $29 parking fee per day, but that's pretty standard at the hotels in Silicon Valley. Love this place and I try to stay when ever the rates are affordable. "Pretty darn good experience"
The only reason I gave it a low rating on "Condition or maintenance of the hotel" was because the front desk woman said they were doing renovations and our water was turned off for like 4 hours. Response by The Sainte Claire Hotel We appreciate the feedback on the accessible outlets in our rooms. With the renovation we just began we are addressing this concern because we know how important it is to have easy access to outlets for all of your electronic devices. When complete, our guests will have easy access to 10 outlets.
Paper thin walls, could here the people next to us partying until 5am. Air conditioner was broken so we were extremely hot and the room was very stuffy all night. Disappointed that the hotel did not comp our room after our sour experience.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by The Sainte Claire Hotel Thank you for your feedback. We want to offer our apologies for a less than perfect experience during your stay. With the renovation we just began we are addressing the sound proofing of every guest room, in addition to upgrading the heating/air conditioning to make for a more comfortable stay.
"Pretty good. Worth staying at."
The hotel is good. The price low. And it's very well located. Only problem was it was Thanksgiving Eve. We arrived late and asked about open restaurants. They didn't know and though they said they would, they didn't check on it for us. We walked across the street to the Marriott and asked there as if we were staying there. They had a printed page of […] restaurants that would be open that night. I do wish the Sainte Claire staff been more helpful. But the stay, the room and everything else was good. Response by The Sainte Claire Hotel Hello and thank you for providing such valid and valuable feedback. Our team should have anticipated your needs for dining options on Thanksgiving Eve, and I'm disappointed we did not. In the future we certainly will do so. "Perfect location for San Jose Civic, Tech Museum"
It's like a piece of the old days in the middle of modern San Jose! An Oasis if there ever was one. Lovely old building carefully and tenderly restored and maintained with any amenity you could possibly wish for, including an Il Fornaio Restaurant right on the premises, or the fabulous Original Joe's a short few blocks away, as well as any number of […] excellent restaurants featuring every cuisine imaginable. Parking has become a bear downtown if you prefer the street, ut there are generally enough spaces in either the city or private lots unless there are too many events happening at once (in which case, good luck! My waiter at Il Fornaio told me 2 groups were no-shows the night before because they couldn't find parking.) It's a delightful experience stying here. I was attending an event at the Civic, which is literally a catty-corner from there, and if the weather cooperates you can make a leisurely walk to the SAP Pavillion and an easier one through old San Jose along 1st Street.
