Flagship stores ring Union Square, among the vanguard of West Coast retail. Chinatown begins at Grant Avenue and Bush Street, while Gold Rush-era mansions crown Nob Hill. South of Union Square, the convention center area includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Cable cars turn around at Powell and Market streets to head back to Fisherman’s Wharf.

Bathroom needs to be refurbished . Heater was rusting and needs replacing . No door handle on toilet door
I was very disappointed with this hotel. It's very old and dirty. It needs to be renovated.
"good hotel"
the neighborhood itself was very noisy, which made sleeping difficult, but the hotel was nice.
"Great Location, Below Average Hotel"
Room was exceptionally small. I was traveling alone but I would recommend the hotel for a couple. My room 211 overlooked the alley which was lined with trash bins and boxes. The room was noisy until the restaurants in the adjacent properties closed for the night which was after midnightl The bathroom was approximately 3'x5' when measuring the ceramic […] tiles. It included the toilet. A larger guest would find getting in and out of the shower hazardous. I will not consider staying at this hotel again. Read more
"if you are desperate"
the location is great, the staff was friendly but the room phone did not work, the room was very tired and in need of repairs....
"Ramshackle hotel!"
This hotel deserves less than a 1. It's an older hotel but still the lack of maintenance to downright filth. There were holes on the wall, mould and rust in the bathroom and a tatered spring bed and mattress that has outlived its time. The rooms are poorly designed and the Tv was pararell to the bed, who does that? It's not worth your money. Much better […] rooms and service at a comparable hotel couple of blocks down the street. "Union Square Plaza Hotel in San Francisco"
We had a delightful stay at this hotel. We loved being in the center of the theatre district. Seeing the architecture, street life, and quaint restaurants was wonderful. The hotel itself represented the history and ambiance of San Francisco. It was exactly what we were looking for.

"Great Location, Great Price"
Good Location right off Union Square. Older Property, so bring some ear plugs, outside street noises can be noticeable.. For the Money, it works for me.
"An Enjoyable Stay at the Union Plaza Hotel"
I stayed at the Union Plaza Hotel for 6 days in early February and can say that this was a pleasant experience. This was not a luxury hotel by any stretch of the imagination as this is an old hotel with a slow elevator and no frills. By this I mean, you get towels but no wash cloths, soap but no shampoo. However, you do get a great location, friendly […] service, and save up to hundreds of dollars in lodging cost depending where you stay in the Union Square District. This hotel is 1 Block from the Cable Cars on Powell. A great Ramen house is right next door. Some of the best breakfast places are within 1-2 blocks as well as some of the best restaurants in the City. Its walking distant for shopping at the Union Square Stores, WestField Center and Chinatown. If you want a clean and comfortable place to sleep while using most of your time enjoying S.F., I recommend this hotel. I will stay here again. Read more

"Ok hotel"
Booked this hotel based on the reviews, which were not accurate at all. Hotel is a great location, service is pretty good. Rooms were not that great, no air conditioning, stuffy and very musky.

"Union Square Plaza centrally located"
Hotel was clean, centrally located and the price was right. A little noisy with the night life but very comfortable.
"Poor condition, minimal service"
I would not recommend this hotel. The front desk was unattended, with no way to call an attendant. After waiting a while, I finally go my room, which was in pretty poor condition. The door wouldn't close entirely without quite a bit of bodily force, the desk chair was broken, and at least one electrical outlet was dangerously loose.

"Union Square Plaza Hotel"
The hotel is just one block off Union Square and only 4 very short blocks from the BART Powell Street Station. The location can not be beat! Service was provided by a pleasant agent at the desk. I was pleasantly surprised to find the room spotlessly clean and tidy. The shower was small, but roomy enought. The sink was located in the bedroom. Room […] furnishings were ample and nice. There was paint cracking at the conjuction of the wall and the ceiling, which was the only complaint. The hotel location is ideal with many reasonable eating establishments and shops nearby. "OK, but..."
I never write reviews but my recent stay here requires that I post my thoughts to future travelers. The room cost $20-$25 per night less than anything else in the area so I bit. Here's the deal. The hotel is in a very old building that is perfectly clean but not well maintained. Our room faced Geary street on the 4th floor and was noisy. Amenities were […] lacking (no shampoo) and towels were small. Though only 2 blocks from Union Square my wife said she would be uncomfortable walking there at night by herself. With all of this understood, I would consider staing here again if cost was a factor. It was clean, the front desk was manned and helpful. Note to management/owners: Next rehab, which should be soon, install double pane windows! Also, regardless of price, shampoo is not optional. Read more
"Great Location"
If you want to be right in Union Square the location is great. It is a old hotel & the rooms are very small so don't look for 5 star. Location & price made it worth it especially if it's only for a few days or overnight. Parking is $25 a night
"Old but great"
This is an old hotel with very little fringes. It is located in the middle of down town. I would stay there is a min. Not for someone who is thinking Hilton or Hyatt.

"Good location, not best sleep ever"
I stayed at this hotel with two friends for four nights during a conference at a nearby, more expensive hotel. I was super pleased with the inexpensive rates and great location right off Union Square. The staff were all super friendly, allowing me to check in several hours early without any extra charge since my room was clean and ready. They also made […] a third key for us, which was great, since rooms typically only have two keys and they had to go get a physical third one made. So this hotel is recommendable based on location and friendly staff. Our room was clean, the shower was nice and hot, towels and linens were clean, tv worked great, a nice basic room from which to explore the city. The downsides, however, would make me reconsider staying there again: Very uncomfortable beds, one with a plastic sounding mattress that made horrible noises every time someone rolled over. I'm usually not terribly picky about beds but these really were unusually uncomfortable mattresses. Noise! If you stay, try and get a room facing the internal window shaft or something, because there were people banging on drums outside all hours of the night and there is zero insulation in the windows, so you hear everything in the street, even on the 6th floor. If you're a night owl, and out there enjoying the drums, then probably not a big concern! So the lack of sleep staying here is not conducive to further recommending it, but if you can find more comfortable beds and a quieter room off the main street, then it might be just the place to stay. "Do not stay at this hotel!"
They gave me a room facing the back of hotel, and between 5 and 7am you have several garbage trucks loading garbage and making incredibly loud noises that will wake you up constantly. The windows won't isolate the noise at all, its like if there were no windows. Really, look for another hotel!

"Great locaiton but ..."
the rooms are not just old looking but in poor condition. There were obvious scratches and paint flaking on the walls. It made me feel lucky that the lights worked and the sheets were clean, but even then, we found two suspicious dead bugs later. Only to simple pillows and no Kleenex in the bathroom. Bottom line, we'll pay extra for another place next […] time. If you've read this far I will say that it is the closest you can get to Union Square for the price and if you can stick it out for one night, go for it. Read more
"Stay somewhere else"
Cracked peeling paint, tiny rooms, lack of the basics - they didn't even provide complimentary shampoo. And there was an incident with the cops coming one night.
"Great Location, GOOD Price!!"
This is a good place to stay and the location was everything..If you want something fancy, this is not the place for you..Clean rms and small, but quite and great location..Resturants right next door, a playhouse across the street, 3 blks from union sq..I am staying there again in april..For the $$ it was well worth it...I am a single man and i felt […] save there Read more

"Union Sq Plaza Hotel - GREAT LOCATION"
The hotel is older but the room was very clean and comfortable. There was on staff employee that was extremely helpful in letting us know about the different modes of transportation and what to take where and prices.... Excellent advice!

"Room Size, Amenities"
Very small room. No coffee . No soap.
"Very good service"
The person in charge with the service desk was very friendly and helpful The location is very good finding everything around
"Good deal"
This is a hotel built for sleeping and bathing nothing more, and is quite good for those reasons. The staff is pleasant and accommodating, the rooms and bath rooms are very clean. The area is convenient and steps from union square and a host of restaurants to choose from.

"Right in Union Square"
I chose this area because I wanted to be by the start of the SF Marathon and it was perfect distance. 1 mile. Great warmup. It was also located by some great restaurants and for me, in the center of where I wanted to be. Nothing fancy, but clean, great wireless and great pillows. The staff was very friendly to me and it was just what I was looking […] for. Read more
"Union Square Plaza Hotel-Convenient Location but.."
The hotel is located in the heart of Union Square, across the street from the Curran Theatre. It's a great location! The problem was that the street noise at night made it impossible to sleep! All night long we heard sirens, drunk people, garbage trucks, homeless people and more drunks! The room itself was OK but it definitely could use a uplift even […] if it was just a bit of paint. There wasn't even shampoo provided and the bath towels were worn and the beds had mattress protectors that were heard every time one moved. Read more
"Great location but horrible standard & service"
Very central location near the Union square but also very poor starndard of room. Small, dirty room in great need of refurbishment. Linnen were clean but torn. So thin windows you could hear every street noise throughout the night, impossible to sleep without ear plugs. Hairdryer was broken, room should be none-smoking but it clearly smelled of ciggarettes. […] Dirty windows, dirty carpet, stains on the wall etc - I would never stay in this hotel again. There was no service whatsoever, the receptionist was unfriendly and refused to help us call for a cab. You get better standard and service staying in a motel in the same price range. Read more
"Convenient location"
One is close to everything but I didn't feel safe to walk around by myself. The hotel itself was ok, a little noisy but clean and with a comfortable bed.
"Great Central Location.....but"
and it's a big BUT....yes, location is great if you need to be near the Union Square area...and the all male 24 hour front desk staff were all friendly, with special thanks going to Hans. But that's about it. Housekeepers were not especially friendly and they expect you to make way for them (though I can even understand that with only one elevator it […] can't be too easy for them to go up and down the floors, but you'd think they would offer and at least have a smile on their faces when they expect you to wait for the next ride - good thing we were only on the 3rd floor) A smile, the most inexpensive quality to have if one is in the tourist business yet so hard to find these days. What you will find in almost all hotels these days...left behind long black hair on (clean?) sheets and/or bath towels etc. Here dyed reddish frizzy hair may also be found. Why management do not provide proper uniforms and hairnets is beyond us. Oh. Almost forgot. The room phone message system does not work. Lights may blink if message left but you won't be able to retrive it. Hopefully you won't be expecting messages! TV remote didn't work neither. What you can expect however, is to be awaken early every AM when the trash pickup trucks comes - or the alarms/radios of the cars parked across the way on the back side of the hotel. Great location as mentioned but there are lots of other hotels nearby! Read more
"Union Sq Plaza Hotel in San Francisco: Good & Bad"
The Union Square Plaza Hotel is AWESOME for bargain-seekers... It has a prime location that can't be beat (right in the middle of downtown with an amazing sushi place right next door, a Starbucks a couple doors down, a 24-hour Jack in the Box a couple doors down, a delicious 24-hour diner across the street, and many bars and restaurants in the surrounding […] area) for prices that can't be beat. However, you get what you pay for in terms of the hotel itself. It's small and quaint, and a bit dumpy. Our room was decently clean, but the hotel as a whole could use some major renovations. I don't mind a so-so hotel all that much (I only sleep there and prefer to spend my time OUTSIDE the hotel), BUT I do have one complaint that falls right into place with that I want (to sleep): The beddings and pillows were horribly inadequate. The pillows were very small and few (only two tiny pillows for a queen bed), and the beddings were very minimal (no comforter at all, just sheets, a small under-blanket, and the token gross bedspread). A comforter would have been nice! All in all, like I said, if you're looking for a deal close to all the action, this is the place. If you want something kind of posh and fancy - or even comfortable - this is NOT your place. Read more
"Most helpful concierge at the Union Square Plaza"
This hotel is very conveniently located and quite comfortable. The real standout feature is the helpfulness of the concierge staff. They are pleasant and full of tips and good advice and take the time to really answer guests' questions.
