The hotel is in a great location for the BART and the Union Square shops. The street outside is definitely noisy, and the hotel is not well insulated from noise. The hotel is older, and the mattress, linens, and pillows reflected that as well. There was no air conditioning in the room, which is typical for San Francisco budget hotels. However, the windows […] in the bathroom and bedroom both opened. This hotel also did not give any shampoo or conditioner, but there's a Walgreens less than 1 block away. The service was good when I arrived, but when I attempted to check out the front desk clerk had left. I left a business card and the key and didn't have any issues checking out that way. Of course, I'd prepaid my stay through Hotels.com. Also beware that the hotel locks its front door at night, which is great for security, but if I hadn't happened to catch the front desk clerk's eye (he was moving between the basement and the room floors when I did), I may have been stuck outside for some time. You get what you pay for. This hotel was convenient, located in the heart of Union Square. The staff was friendly, and the room was okay (clean, but no frills). The street outside was very loud, even with the window shut. We had trouble sleeping all three nights because of the sirens and yelling outside. I would not stay here again.

The room was very small, especially the bathroom. The view out the window was of an alley, and noise from outside woke me up in the morning. But it was so much cheaper than the Westin that it was kind of worth it. The hotel didn't have its own parking lot, so I had to pay $25/day for parking at a garage.

This was perfect for our stay and budget! We had a wedding to attend around the corner on Union Square and no other hotels in the area even came close to this price. We were braced for a frightening presentation but were wonderfully surprised. The rooms are older and outdated but clean and comfortable. The staff was very helpful! They found us a room […] upon early arrival so we could get settled immediately and allowed us to leave luggage after checkout so we could walk around the city. There's no toilettries provided but a walgreen's is around the corner if needed. This hotel is relatively inexpensive for the area around Union Square in San Francisco. But the hotel is quite old and not well maintained. The windows are really thin and so the room is very loud and I would highly recommend that you bring earplugs if you ever stay here. Some of the towels I was given to use had odd stains on them as well though they did smell clean. The room has a old school heater and there's no way for an individual to control the temperature of your room, its regulated for the hotel overall. My room would turn into an inferno at night and I couldn't sleep because of it. The hotel also did not have an ice machine that I ever found or a drink/snack machine which was a little inconvenient. They offered an odd selection of tv channels and did not have ESPN or ESPN2 which are rather important to me. The wireless internet was free which was a plus and the staff at the front desk were polite and helpful when I schedule a shuttle to the airport. Read more

I was worried because of some bad reviews. I loved our hotel. Yes it is old but it is charming. The hotel itself is quiet. The noise people spoke of was, i imagine, from the street. My boyfriend and I love city noises so we kept the windows open. If you close the window the noise is quite muted. It was good to know in advance that there is NO SHAMPOO. […] However there was a blow dryer and iron. The staff was great! It is just blocks from the BART station and close to everything in Union Square and across the streat from the theater. Great location but there is an alley where bottles are tossed out by a restaurant around 2:00am and 5:00am. Also, recycling trucks come early. There is practically no soundproofing on the windows. Horrible. Will never stay here again.

I have stayed at the Union Square Plaza several times before--great location and easy-on-the-wallet rates. You would never mistake this place for the Ritz-Carlton, but it does have all the basics, and I'll continue to come here because it fits my budget perfectly.

Great location for union square, and Bart to/from airport. Good hotel for the money, nothing fancy but who wants to hang out in the hotel room that much? I thought it was awesome! I only went in the hotel to sleep, but it was clean and had a shower. It was beautiful to open the window and see the theater across the street. ONLY one or two blocks from union square. The people at the desk were helpful too.

Mold/mildew on the walls and ceiling. Broken light fixtures. A single-pane window that didn't lock and let in ALL of the noise, all night long, from Union Square.
