"Great location, but you get what you pay for."
The location of the hotel is superb--so close to Union Square. The staff was sufficient and the general condition of the hotel is to be expected given the lower price for rooms than other surrounding hotels. If you are on a tight budget, this is the hotel for you. The room is tiny, has seen much better days, and has little to offer in the way of extra […] comforts. But, if you want a bed and a private bath in a safe spot that has no bed bugs, this is the right fit. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Not worth the savings"
Bad first impression, with a badly chipped formica counter at check in, where a woman was complaining about the condition of her room. On the elevator, which could use a tune up, she was more explicit. So I wasn't surprised to see my room was Spartan, in need of a paint job, cheap linens. But it was clean enough. There were two very small bars of soap, […] no other toiletries. Sprinkler system pipes are exposed. Not worth the 130 I paid, but when I checked in rooms were 99. At that price, if you need a bed and nothing more for a night or two, you might consider it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"This hotel is OK"
This hotel is at a great location, just 2 blocks away from Union Square, walk-able distance to BART status, Cable car station, and couple of bus stations which can almost take you to any place you want to visit. 15 mins walk to China town is not bad. But the building is quite old and room is small. It's a little bit noisy at night.Genuine Expedia guest review
This is a good place to stay if you do not care about amenities and want to spend your money on other things. Located close to cable car line and several blocks from the Ferry Building. People at the front desk were friendly and helpful. We would stay here again if we go back to San Francisco.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I was very disappointed in this room. In fact I decided not to even stay there once I saw the room. It was disgusting.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Decent Hotel Downtown With a Decent Price"
Everything was fairly nice except one thing: the windows, window frame (inside and out), and radiator below the windows seemingly have not been cleaned for 10 years. I did not understand this as everything else was nice and clean, but this was nasty.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Good location, but too old inside"
I was given less than a week before taking the trip to SF. Given the limit of budget and location, this is the only place I can afford. But once I arrived, I was disappointed with what $200 has bought. The internal condition is like an Inn rather than a hotel. The room is small, windows are old and discolored, and the chair is almost worn out.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good for the money"
Location was great. Next to restaurants and coffee shops, close to shopping and the Bart. Only bad experience was the knob for the heater was broken and couldn't close. Very small rooms but we weren't in very long. Would recommend to othersGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Get what you pay for"
The hotel really wasn't THAT bad, but there is no AC and when we got into our room, the heat was on... in June. So, we turned the heat off and had to sleep with the window open. Even with the window closed, we could hear all the partying going on in the middle of the night. People were screaming, we heard lots of glass getting broken. It could've been […] better. The bathroom was clean, but the sink was halfway across the room and there wasn't much space to do anything in the actual bathroom. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The room was dirty and extremely outdated. In the middle of the night, the power of the entire room went out for about an hour. No air conditioning so we had no choice but to open the windows; however, the noise from the street (drunken people, typical city noise) kept us awake all night. DO NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE!!!! Worst hotel experience of my […] life!!!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Cheap but noisy"
Incredibly noisy all night long. Hotel needs double/triple pane windows. No AC means you have to open the windows, I.e. more noise. Surprisingly clean/good maid service. Friendly staff.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"great location, affordable hotel"
decent hotel with gtreat location, but without the price tag. Steps away from 5 star hotels costing 5 times as much. the rooms are similar to European hotels, small, simple, but efficient.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice location, staff are help."
I like hotal location, close to China Town. I walk to Chinatown for lunch and dinner. Close to Convention Center for confrence. just walk disdence. Hotal staff are nice and very help. I felt like at home. I have good time stay in that hotal.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great location, good for only one traveler though"
Great location, amazing price, safe neighbourhood, 4 or so blocks from the BART. Small, small rooms. Split bathrooms (sink is outside the shower/toilet room). If I were to sit on the toilet, there was approx one inch between my knees and the wall ... The room is that small. It's a good enough space if you were traveling solo, not so great if sharing […] the room with a friend. I'd still recommend it though for the price/location alone! We realized we were paying a lower rate but we found the hotel in need of repairs. Pealing paint and lack of maintenance was obvious. The place needed a deep clean not the superficial clean of the maids.Genuine Expedia guest review

"For budget-minded people without children"
PROS: The check-in person who was pleasant to me and also was compassionate to a traveler from abroad who did not plan as well as he should have. The hallways were bright with artificial light and pleasant (but still suffered from walls that had been painted too often). And the location is only a couple blocks away from Union Square, albeit one of those […] blocks can attract people who will ask you for money. CONS: The condition of my actual room. The windows overlooked a narrow alley so very little natural light got into the room. One of the single pane windows was cracked from frame to frame and seemed to me to be in danger of falling. The frame itself not only was painted too often but also the wood either suffered from rot or had been bored into from the outside for some reason. The bathroom ceiling light was without a cover and the shower curtain did not have a full set of plastic rings. I did not test the plumbing nor the bed with its sheets. Standing in that room I imagined myself unable to sleep from possible rodents or cockroaches (neither of which I actually witnessed) or from suspicious bed sheets or from possible loud sounds from other rooms adjacent to that alley. CONCLUSION: Based on extreme condition of the one room I received I simply guessed that all the other rooms were basically the same and thus did not ask for another room. Not feeling comfortable to actually stay the night I was scheduled I quickly found another hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

I really appreciated how accommodating the staff were. Great location. Rooms are definitely in need of some paint and updating. Internet was soooooooooooo slow.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"No frills, great price."
Ok, first off, there are some pictures already online showing the good, bad, and ugly, so I decided not to add to the pic pool as my room was actually decent, for the price. There were some downsides like: 1. bed not very comfy (no pillow-top here), cheap mattress, pillows too fluffy (were they stuffed with cotton balls?) BUT I brought my own pillow […] and quilt and swapped out their bed cover. 2. Another downside is that the hotel is very old and not very well kept up. I expected to see at least one cockroach during my 4-night stay, but I never did. Let me just say that every building in SF has cockroaches, it's just something that goes with the city. 3. the windows are very dirty. My room looked out onto an inner light well in between the two sides of the building, so although it was the most quiet spot in the hotel, it was not a nice view (better than the alley, definitely). 4. I understand they have wifi but I had lousy reception for my android 4g phone. 5. The one lamp in the room had a broken on/off switch so I had to plug and unplug it from the wall to turn on and off. Ok, now for the good: 1. Cheap price, 2. excellent location, 3. all the basic necessities (tub/shower, good-sized closet, tv), 4. bathroom was quite clean. 5.The closet had hangers. 6.The staff were helpful and a couple of them had friendly outgoing personalities and were fun to chat with. 7.They held my luggage for me on my last day so I could check out and pick it up later. 8. ok overall. "Close to shopping"
The hotel is in a great location for the BART and the Union Square shops. The street outside is definitely noisy, and the hotel is not well insulated from noise. The hotel is older, and the mattress, linens, and pillows reflected that as well. There was no air conditioning in the room, which is typical for San Francisco budget hotels. However, the windows […] in the bathroom and bedroom both opened. This hotel also did not give any shampoo or conditioner, but there's a Walgreens less than 1 block away. The service was good when I arrived, but when I attempted to check out the front desk clerk had left. I left a business card and the key and didn't have any issues checking out that way. Of course, I'd prepaid my stay through Hotels.com. Also beware that the hotel locks its front door at night, which is great for security, but if I hadn't happened to catch the front desk clerk's eye (he was moving between the basement and the room floors when I did), I may have been stuck outside for some time. ""Only for the desperate""
The only reason that I stayed here was that every decent hotel in Union Square was booked unless I wanted to pay $600 per night.Genuine Expedia guest review
The hotel is in a good location if you need to be around Union Square (though I don't know why any sane visitor wants to spend time around Union Square - I was attending a conference nearby so I had to be there). Anyhow, Union Square is not a great neighborhood. The hotel itself is not in great condition. There are no amenities whatsoever. The room […] was barely acceptable (it was old but looked clean). The bathroom was awful (but kinda clean). Shortly, stay somewhere else if you can afford. If not, this is a decent hotel, don't have high expectations. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
You get what you pay for. This hotel was convenient, located in the heart of Union Square. The staff was friendly, and the room was okay (clean, but no frills). The street outside was very loud, even with the window shut. We had trouble sleeping all three nights because of the sirens and yelling outside. I would not stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Great staff, great location, old hotel, plenty of character. If you have problems with the lights flickering to life a few seconds after you actually flip the switch, this might not be the place for you. Otherwise, it is a great deal.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good price for the location"
Good price for the location. Not luxurious but utilitarian.Genuine Expedia guest review
"It was ok."
The room was very small, especially the bathroom. The view out the window was of an alley, and noise from outside woke me up in the morning. But it was so much cheaper than the Westin that it was kind of worth it. The hotel didn't have its own parking lot, so I had to pay $25/day for parking at a garage.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient but rudimentary"
This is a convenient location in downtown SFO. But the hotel could do with some renovation as everything from stairways to bathrooms are a bit run down. My room had a bulky old fashioned CRT television in a cupboard which seemed like unnecessary clutter as this is not why one would spend a night in San Francisco. A clock radio and free WiFi access would […] have been much better options. Remember to bring your own shampoo as there are only soap bars in the bathroom. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great price for the location and accommodation"
This was perfect for our stay and budget! We had a wedding to attend around the corner on Union Square and no other hotels in the area even came close to this price. We were braced for a frightening presentation but were wonderfully surprised. The rooms are older and outdated but clean and comfortable. The staff was very helpful! They found us a room […] upon early arrival so we could get settled immediately and allowed us to leave luggage after checkout so we could walk around the city. There's no toilettries provided but a walgreen's is around the corner if needed. I highly recommend this hotel if you're on a budget and want to be in a convenient downtown location offering walking distance to much of San Francisco. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I couldn't believe a hotel wouldn't provide shampoo for the shower. There was also supposed to be a business center for a cost, but there was one desk in the lobby, but nothing else that should be in a business center. "Poor hotel in a great location"
We found the hotel shabby. The room was noisy. The wi-fi was glacially slow, think dial-up. The door fit poorly in the frame and the lock was flimsy.Genuine Expedia guest review
Overalll it was an enjoyable trip. The room was larger than most hotels in downtown San Franciso, which was a plesant surprise. There were a number of great restaurants close by.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"good bargain in Union Sq. - SF"
Second stay for us. The hotel is a good bargain if you want to stay in the Union Square area in San Francisco. The hotel is old, but reasonably well maintained, with small clean rooms - but if you are in SF why would you stay in the room. No amenities, but the staff is friendly. Starbucks two doors away and a small grocery half a block away if you want […] some in room refreshments. Hotel has a parking arrangement with a good garage 1-1/2 blocks away, with reasonable prices for SF. It can be noisy when the trash collectors come through. Overall if you are looking for an economical and simple hotel room while you are visiting SF this a good choice. We will go back again for next visit to SF. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location for the budget traveler"
Mattress wasn't great. No shampoo or conditioner. very slow wireless - no point in even trying to use it. Nice windows that could open for fresh air. I'm used to city noise so that didn't bother me. One night there was a man singing songs from Les mis! You don't get that in NYC :) great location though - close to everything. Great restaurants nearby […] too! "Nice Hotel close to action"
No shampoo, no wash cloths, slow internet and some crazy beating a drum out on the street till 4:00 AM outside one night but otherwise, nice room. I liked it and would stay there again. The corner diner nearby has a great breakfast.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"right in theatre central on a budget"
It was pleasant, altho a rumbling noise outside the window at night, some kind of air conditioning maybe? A mechanical noise. The front rooms open right to a fairly busy street, so I would definitely go to the room and listen for the noise before deciding. Very small room, and bathroom was tiny, just toilet and tub. Wash basin in the room. Little room […] to even park a suitcase. But still, for the price OK. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Noisy Hotel! (noisy is an understatement)"
The hotel rooms are not sound proof. If you don't care about your sleep you will be ok. The hotel room appears ok until 2 am- you will be miserable. The alleys of the hotel have trash carriers, which will wake you up with a reverse horns, the entire building resonates the engine noise and the honking. This activity continues until 5 or 6 am. I needed […] to stay near the Union sq for a conference, and i had already paid for. I will not go back. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location, free wireless, not clean enough"
This hotel is relatively inexpensive for the area around Union Square in San Francisco. But the hotel is quite old and not well maintained. The windows are really thin and so the room is very loud and I would highly recommend that you bring earplugs if you ever stay here. The room was also not particularly clean when I arrived, there were a couple of […] long hairs on the pillow/sheets and more hair in the bathroom sink and on the bathroom floor which made me question the cleanliness of the whole room. Some of the towels I was given to use had odd stains on them as well though they did smell clean. The room has a old school heater and there's no way for an individual to control the temperature of your room, its regulated for the hotel overall. My room would turn into an inferno at night and I couldn't sleep because of it. The hotel also did not have an ice machine that I ever found or a drink/snack machine which was a little inconvenient. They offered an odd selection of tv channels and did not have ESPN or ESPN2 which are rather important to me. The wireless internet was free which was a plus and the staff at the front desk were polite and helpful when I schedule a shuttle to the airport. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Really basic hotel with a TV and a heater. Rooms can use some updating - chipped paint, bed feels old, bath looks old etc... Overall, this place is a-ok if you want to stay in this area.
