"Noisy and has no internet service"
Has no internet! Rooms are smallest, only 1 elevator to all 7 floors, furniture like 1 stars hotel, or 3 stars in London. Location good for shopping but anything else. Don't advice to stay for vacation.Genuine Expedia guest review
Room was WAAAY too small, and the view was of a neighboring parking garage. Garbage truck started at around 3am, and kept us awake ALL night until about 7am. Hotel is on a one-way street, with no parking, so have to pay 25.00 a night to park in a parking garage, on a whole different street, then walk to hotel. I was very disappointed with this hotel. […] Plus, cups were in our room, but there was no ice or vending machine. When I asked at the front desk what we could drink he said, "tap water is good". Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The building is old and clearly hasn't been rennovated, but it's kept clean and you can't beat the price for being in such a good location. There are lots of resturants and bars within a short walk and it's fairly easy to grab a cab out front. My only complaint is that the radiator can be a bit too loud, as it is an old-fashioned wall-unit.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Hotel Location-Parking with in/out privilege"
Very convenient at a reasonable price and good service at the front desk, Wi-Fi included, in general maintenance of the building should be better.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hotel in great location center San Francisco!"
Excellent location, center of the city. Room, bed, bathroom is clean, but bagging for renovation. Rooms inside has not been renovated since 1907 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Staff is helpful, but they can do only so much. Location and price bits it all.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great hotel for a night or two"
Great location! Sid at the front desk was wonderful. Gave us a bigger room when he saw that we had an additional person in our party. He was very helpful and stored our luggage so we could do some shopping before and after checking in/out. The hotel is very small and the beds not comfortable but not horrific for a night or 2. Ur in SF so you shouldnt […] be in ur room much anyway! : ) Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The hotel is ok considering the price. The rooms are pretty outdated, but I guess the price makes up for that given its location. Overall, not a bad place if you're looking for a place to stay and don't care too much about room.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Close to Union Square"
The room was a little tight on space and the facilities run down, but the staff was very nice and the hotel is in a good location and had a good price. It was also noisy at night especially if you needed the windows open for air.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Hotel near Union Square"
This is an old place but it's in a good spot close to Union Square. If you plan on staying minimally in the room and spending your time around San Francisco, this would be ok. If you like hanging out in your room, don't stay here. Don't fall for the parking discount for $25 the staff tells you about. You can get parking for $18 at most lots in the area […] if you have the hotel validate the ticket. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
I like to stay there again in the future becuz there are nice surroundings with restaurants, stores, theater and etc.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient and Comfortable"
This hotel was very conveniently located to many cultural centers in San Francisco. It was quite and comfortable with a well-functioning heating system. The television was not working at all. A staff member came to my room and initiated a complex process that took 30 minutes. But the TV should have worked immediately. However, check in and check out […] were efficient and courteous. I had read many negative online reviews for this hotel, none of which agreed with my experience. The room was clean and everything functioned well. Online connection was slow, but worked. With the exception of one surly staff person, the other staff members were courteous and helpful. For a "budget hotel," I found it better than most other budget hotels […] I've stayed at in major cities. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Needs Major Renovation"
The hotel is in a great location, but it is ancient and needs major renovations. It is dark and musty and we were glad to leave at the end of our stay. Overall, the room was pretty clean except for the windows, which had about 50 years of grime on them. It was also really warm and had no a/c, but one of our windows would not stay open as it was too […] old and deteriorated. It is cheaper than the other hotels nearby, but I would definitely recommend paying a bit more and having a more pleasant stay somewhere else. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Very close to Union Square and theaters."
We liked the hotel, but it lacked an ice machine, so we had to go to Jack in the Box for ice. The shower and toilet room was too small.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"get what you pay for..."
This was not a very nice hotel. I understand San Francisco is expensive, and it's summertime. But that being said, this hotel would be half as much in any other big city. The location is awesome, right on Mason near Market St. Can't ask for a more central location. The only real beef I had with the place was the noise. We were placed in a room with […] a window facing the alley. And I swear there must have been a recycling operation going on back there, as there were trucks going in and out all night. No way to get any sleep, and I had a cranky girlfriend to prove it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Because of Expedia's reviews, I was prepared!"
The Expedia reviews of the Union Square Plaza hotel were spot-on. European feel to it, mostly in the lack of air conditioners. Very Spartan room, but clean. Bathroom was clean. Because there were no air conditioners, we had the windows open, and they did open up onto a very busy street, so there was noise pretty much all night into the early morning, […] but we're pretty decent sleepers so it wasn't that big of a deal for us. You are right on the edge of the Tenderloin district and the Union Square district; plenty of convenience stores, restaurants, etc. right outside your door. We needed an inexpensive option right in the city, we weren't there for high-end luxury. The room was exactly what we needed. Did not feel unsafe at any time. Just be city-smart, in general. "Only if you have to"
This hotel is in a great, safe location but it is more or less a dive. The miniscule lobby is in bad repair. The hallways and stairwells are old but in good shape. Our room was in need of a good cleaning and paint. The toilet was covered by a "sanitized" paper but inside was garbage and a big wad of hair. If you really can't find anywhere at a reasonable […] rate in Union square and you're not going to be in your room much, this place seemed safe but bring your slippers because you don't want to walk on the carpet. The linens (but NOT the bedspread) seemed clean as was the mattress underneath. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"You get what you pay for"
The hotel had a good location, but it did not provide anything, shampoo, soap, ice bucket. It was close to where we needed to be and we were hardly in the room. If you are even looking for a 2 star hotel this barely makes it.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location, but you get what you pay for."
The location of the hotel is superb--so close to Union Square. The staff was sufficient and the general condition of the hotel is to be expected given the lower price for rooms than other surrounding hotels. If you are on a tight budget, this is the hotel for you. The room is tiny, has seen much better days, and has little to offer in the way of extra […] comforts. But, if you want a bed and a private bath in a safe spot that has no bed bugs, this is the right fit. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Not worth the savings"
Bad first impression, with a badly chipped formica counter at check in, where a woman was complaining about the condition of her room. On the elevator, which could use a tune up, she was more explicit. So I wasn't surprised to see my room was Spartan, in need of a paint job, cheap linens. But it was clean enough. There were two very small bars of soap, […] no other toiletries. Sprinkler system pipes are exposed. Not worth the 130 I paid, but when I checked in rooms were 99. At that price, if you need a bed and nothing more for a night or two, you might consider it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"This hotel is OK"
This hotel is at a great location, just 2 blocks away from Union Square, walk-able distance to BART status, Cable car station, and couple of bus stations which can almost take you to any place you want to visit. 15 mins walk to China town is not bad. But the building is quite old and room is small. It's a little bit noisy at night.Genuine Expedia guest review
This is a good place to stay if you do not care about amenities and want to spend your money on other things. Located close to cable car line and several blocks from the Ferry Building. People at the front desk were friendly and helpful. We would stay here again if we go back to San Francisco.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I was very disappointed in this room. In fact I decided not to even stay there once I saw the room. It was disgusting.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Decent Hotel Downtown With a Decent Price"
Everything was fairly nice except one thing: the windows, window frame (inside and out), and radiator below the windows seemingly have not been cleaned for 10 years. I did not understand this as everything else was nice and clean, but this was nasty.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Good location, but too old inside"
I was given less than a week before taking the trip to SF. Given the limit of budget and location, this is the only place I can afford. But once I arrived, I was disappointed with what $200 has bought. The internal condition is like an Inn rather than a hotel. The room is small, windows are old and discolored, and the chair is almost worn out.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good for the money"
Location was great. Next to restaurants and coffee shops, close to shopping and the Bart. Only bad experience was the knob for the heater was broken and couldn't close. Very small rooms but we weren't in very long. Would recommend to othersGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Get what you pay for"
The hotel really wasn't THAT bad, but there is no AC and when we got into our room, the heat was on... in June. So, we turned the heat off and had to sleep with the window open. Even with the window closed, we could hear all the partying going on in the middle of the night. People were screaming, we heard lots of glass getting broken. It could've been […] better. The bathroom was clean, but the sink was halfway across the room and there wasn't much space to do anything in the actual bathroom. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The room was dirty and extremely outdated. In the middle of the night, the power of the entire room went out for about an hour. No air conditioning so we had no choice but to open the windows; however, the noise from the street (drunken people, typical city noise) kept us awake all night. DO NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE!!!! Incredibly noisy all night long. Hotel needs double/triple pane windows. No AC means you have to open the windows, I.e. more noise. Surprisingly clean/good maid service. Friendly staff.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great location, good for only one traveler though"
Great location, amazing price, safe neighbourhood, 4 or so blocks from the BART. Small, small rooms. Split bathrooms (sink is outside the shower/toilet room). If I were to sit on the toilet, there was approx one inch between my knees and the wall ... The room is that small. It's a good enough space if you were traveling solo, not so great if sharing […] the room with a friend. I'd still recommend it though for the price/location alone! "For budget-minded people without children"
PROS: The check-in person who was pleasant to me and also was compassionate to a traveler from abroad who did not plan as well as he should have. The hallways were bright with artificial light and pleasant (but still suffered from walls that had been painted too often). And the location is only a couple blocks away from Union Square, albeit one of those […] blocks can attract people who will ask you for money. CONS: The condition of my actual room. The windows overlooked a narrow alley so very little natural light got into the room. One of the single pane windows was cracked from frame to frame and seemed to me to be in danger of falling. The frame itself not only was painted too often but also the wood either suffered from rot or had been bored into from the outside for some reason. The bathroom ceiling light was without a cover and the shower curtain did not have a full set of plastic rings. I did not test the plumbing nor the bed with its sheets. Standing in that room I imagined myself unable to sleep from possible rodents or cockroaches (neither of which I actually witnessed) or from suspicious bed sheets or from possible loud sounds from other rooms adjacent to that alley. CONCLUSION: Based on extreme condition of the one room I received I simply guessed that all the other rooms were basically the same and thus did not ask for another room. Not feeling comfortable to actually stay the night I was scheduled I quickly found another hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"No frills, great price."
Ok, first off, there are some pictures already online showing the good, bad, and ugly, so I decided not to add to the pic pool as my room was actually decent, for the price. There were some downsides like: 1. bed not very comfy (no pillow-top here), cheap mattress, pillows too fluffy (were they stuffed with cotton balls?) BUT I brought my own pillow […] and quilt and swapped out their bed cover. 2. Another downside is that the hotel is very old and not very well kept up. I expected to see at least one cockroach during my 4-night stay, but I never did. Let me just say that every building in SF has cockroaches, it's just something that goes with the city. 3. the windows are very dirty. My room looked out onto an inner light well in between the two sides of the building, so although it was the most quiet spot in the hotel, it was not a nice view (better than the alley, definitely). 4. I understand they have wifi but I had lousy reception for my android 4g phone. 5. The one lamp in the room had a broken on/off switch so I had to plug and unplug it from the wall to turn on and off. Ok, now for the good: 1. Cheap price, 2. excellent location, 3. all the basic necessities (tub/shower, good-sized closet, tv), 4. bathroom was quite clean. 5.The closet had hangers. 6.The staff were helpful and a couple of them had friendly outgoing personalities and were fun to chat with. 7.They held my luggage for me on my last day so I could check out and pick it up later. 8. ok overall. "Close to shopping"
The hotel is in a great location for the BART and the Union Square shops. The street outside is definitely noisy, and the hotel is not well insulated from noise. The hotel is older, and the mattress, linens, and pillows reflected that as well. There was no air conditioning in the room, which is typical for San Francisco budget hotels. However, the windows […] in the bathroom and bedroom both opened. This hotel also did not give any shampoo or conditioner, but there's a Walgreens less than 1 block away. The service was good when I arrived, but when I attempted to check out the front desk clerk had left. I left a business card and the key and didn't have any issues checking out that way. Of course, I'd prepaid my stay through Hotels.com. Also beware that the hotel locks its front door at night, which is great for security, but if I hadn't happened to catch the front desk clerk's eye (he was moving between the basement and the room floors when I did), I may have been stuck outside for some time. ""Only for the desperate""
The only reason that I stayed here was that every decent hotel in Union Square was booked unless I wanted to pay $600 per night.Genuine Expedia guest review
The hotel is in a good location if you need to be around Union Square (though I don't know why any sane visitor wants to spend time around Union Square - I was attending a conference nearby so I had to be there). Anyhow, Union Square is not a great neighborhood. The hotel itself is not in great condition. There are no amenities whatsoever. The room […] was barely acceptable (it was old but looked clean). The bathroom was awful (but kinda clean). Shortly, stay somewhere else if you can afford. If not, this is a decent hotel, don't have high expectations. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
You get what you pay for. This hotel was convenient, located in the heart of Union Square. The staff was friendly, and the room was okay (clean, but no frills). The street outside was very loud, even with the window shut. We had trouble sleeping all three nights because of the sirens and yelling outside. I would not stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
