"Great location, but a low-end hotel"
I enjoyed the location of this hotel, however it really needs a makeover and updates to infrastructure. The elevator was tiny and could only fit "max. 4 people". I didn't even bother using it because with only one elevator, it was always filled with people and/or luggage. Most people just waited until it was empty (takes a while with luggage). This […] is the first hotel I have ever stayed in where I was actually shocked at the disrepair--and I'm not fussy. Towel racks were falling off the wall, mildew on all the caulk in the bathroom/windows, stains on the wall/ceiling, etc. If you don't care about dinginess and are looking for a low low low-end hotel, then this place is fine. Like I said, great location. By the way, you get actual keys for rooms (not the card type). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Conient but a bit old"
Very convenient location, walking distance to downtown. but facility a bit old .Genuine Expedia guest review
"Close to everything but an old, run down hotel"
The rooms were awful and not very clean. The only thing I could say was it was inexpensive, & I guess one gets what one pays for. Would not stay there again, altho staff very nice. It was close to the shopping in Union Square, the only positive aspect of the hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Value hotel near Union Square"
An average SFO tourist hotel, in a good location, for a great price. Set your expectations for historic and quaint, aka old and well worn, and you may be pleasantly surprised. This hotel is definitely not the Sir Francis Drake in service or price and I'd position it one step above a hostel. We received more than we expected for the price we paid so […] our stay was pleasing. The front desk receptionists were exceptionally accommodating and helpful so strike up a conversation with them on something other than the lack of air conditioning and you'll receive a restaurant or activity recommendation as good as any from a pompous concierge. Bring or buy ear plugs and your own toiletries then stay out on the town until you are ready to crash, and you'll have as good a stay as we did. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Overpriced very poor accommodation"
Feels dodgy at night, very basic rooms, small, smelly. Windows open dangerously from the 6th floor, but need it open as there is no air con... So make sure you leave bathroom light on as you don't want to stumble out the window accidently in the night :( No basics like shampoo/conditioner. Very unhelpful staff. But good central area. But there are plenty […] of other hotels to choose from in the area before this one. We failed massively. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Wouldn't recommend this noisy hotel"
I stay in Union Square one week a month for work and the usual hotels I stay at were unavailable so I chose this hotel. Paper thin walls and 2nd floor room that was right above an alley where a homeless man screamed for 3 straight hours in the middle of the night (and I could hear every word like I was 2 feet away from him). Room didn't even have basic […] amenities like shampoo, nothing but a bar of soap. The room is definitely on the cheaper side in case you need somewhere to stay close to the center of things in SF but with the incredible street noise, don't count on getting any sleep or considering this a clean, comfortable place to stay. "Avoid putting location over comfort and sanitation"
This hotel was funky, funky, funky! The mattress was threadbear with springs showing through. The bedding was filthy so we slept using our jackets for warmth and our trousers folded up for pillows. The room was so small you had to crawl over the bed to get around the entertainment consul. Granted, this was a last minute purchase right accross the street […] from the theater where our show was playing but, I will never, never again trade convience for comfort and cleanliness! "Central Location, Extremely disappointing"
The overall purpose of the hotel was met; supplying a bed and a toilet, however my wife and I had no clue what was in store for us. For starters, our room had an aroma of moisture and dust that felt unhealthy and uncomfortable. When we opened our non-screened in window to the room to air it out, the overwhelming scent of trash flew in from the 4 dumpsters […] below in the alley 8 feet down. The pigeons on our windowsill were friendly. I was extremely disappointed with this hotel. I did not think that Hotels.com had hotels like this on their site, and for the price, I felt ripped off. I would not recommend this hotel to any friend or enemy. The location is great, but not worth it. I would advise staying in a hostel for cheaper and better conditions. Hope this helps any future San Fran travelers looking for a comfortable stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"great location..... hotel not clean...."
hotel is in a great location in the city - you can walk anywhere. Unfortunately it is not clean and needs an update. The curtains and sheets had holes and there was dust everywhere. Thankful that there was a bathroom in the room, but the light only flickered. Oh and by the way, good thing that San Fran is so cool you can open the windows because if […] you are looking for AC you are at the wrong hotel..... too bad the yelling homeless and late night drunks will keep you up. We walked into our room and walked right out. My wife and I couldn't stay there. Its a dump. It was cheap and I should have known better. If you are young and trying to skimp by -- it would probably work. I am middle aged and should have known better.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Cheapest in the Union Square area"
The hotel was old and rundown but I'm not picky and the location was great.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Misleading"
When we arrived in our room, we discovered that the television did not work, the toilet would only flush after depressing the handle for 30 seconds or longer, the shower had no water pressure, the walls had peeling paint, and the windows would not open for ventilation. I contacted the front desk with my concerns and was told that they were sold out […] and would not be able to do anything about it. I have stayed in San Francisco several times and would recommend any of the other hotels that I have stayed in except for this one. The reviews are misleading and the hotel looks nothing like the pictures that are posted. I will never stay in this place ever again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"You get what you pay for."
The location was great for us, the room was very old and very warm... the bed was clean but not at all comfortable, we almost ended up just sleeping on the floor. The website does not match the hotel at all... I should of just spent another $50 bucks a night and stayed somewhere else. I will not stay here again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Depends what you are looking for..."
If you are looking for a nice hotel with a nice room then this is NOT for u. This hotel is super old and outdated. If u just need to crash for the night, this is one of the most affordable ones. Good location but if you are a light sleeper u should bring some ear plugs.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Bring your ear muffs and ear plugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I was excited that I found this hotel at first because it was the right price and just around the corner from my gym named Club One. I was even more happy when I noticed Ruby Skye was right around the corner, my company had a party scheduled there during my trip. The gym sucked which was a surprise for Club One and the trash folks pick up the garbage […] between 12:30 Am AND 3:30 AM, they are so loud it is completely impossible to sleep and I was on the 6th floor. Unless you are planning on partying all night long this hotel would not be a good choice which is to bad. Everything was near, the guy at the front desk was very helpful with restaurant choices, etc...... Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"In the middle of it all, but in bad condition"
The hotel is in the middle of it all, and the staff was friendly BUT... the hotel is very run down. Windows were cracked, thin and rickety, window sills were peeling, carpet and furniture were very worn, the elevator was creaky. This all made for an almost scary stay that reminded me of almost the lowest level of Manhattan 'tenament' hotel rooms. There […] is no air conditioning and opening the windows is creaky clunky afair that exposes you to the loud street noise below, which gets worse when the clubs nearby get rolling on Saturday night and the picketers nearby get started with their bullhorns in the early morning. This is the first Hotwire hotel I have stayed in that I can't recommend to anyone. Frankly-stay away. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Location is the only positive thing"
The Union Square Plaza is a very old hotel which hasn't been upgraded or maintained for too many years. The location is perfect very close to Union Square and Cable Car, buses, BART etc. The employees were somewhat kind but not always available. The window in the room was with a single pane of glass which meant that you couldn't hear any difference […] whether it was open or closed, and more so it was good that the view was to another hotels parking garage, because it was so dirty you barely couldn't see through. When trash was picked up right below the windows facing away from Geary St. at 1 AM every night we were most certainly woken up. The bed mattress was probably state of the art 20 years ago and not all lamps in the room functioned, actually only one. The Wifi was fine, a bit slow, but coverage was excellent in our room. When booked via hotels.com, the Wifi was without any extra charge. The bathroom is very small and the sink is in the main room next to the bed (probably normal a few decades ago). The bathroom also had large mold stains. So if location is everything, and you'd like to experience an SF hotel with a "historical touch", go right ahead, we won't be returning. "Great Location, Below Average Hotel"
Room was exceptionally small. I was traveling alone but I would recommend the hotel for a couple. My room 211 overlooked the alley which was lined with trash bins and boxes. The room was noisy until the restaurants in the adjacent properties closed for the night which was after midnightl The bathroom was approximately 3'x5' when measuring the ceramic […] tiles. It included the toilet. A larger guest would find getting in and out of the shower hazardous. I will not consider staying at this hotel again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Ramshackle hotel!"
This hotel deserves less than a 1. It's an older hotel but still the lack of maintenance to downright filth. There were holes on the wall, mould and rust in the bathroom and a tatered spring bed and mattress that has outlived its time. The rooms are poorly designed and the Tv was pararell to the bed, who does that? It's not worth your money. Much better […] rooms and service at a comparable hotel couple of blocks down the street. "Union Square Plaza Hotel in San Francisco"
We had a delightful stay at this hotel. We loved being in the center of the theatre district. Seeing the architecture, street life, and quaint restaurants was wonderful. "An Enjoyable Stay at the Union Plaza Hotel"
I stayed at the Union Plaza Hotel for 6 days in early February and can say that this was a pleasant experience. This was not a luxury hotel by any stretch of the imagination as this is an old hotel with a slow elevator and no frills. By this I mean, you get towels but no wash cloths, soap but no shampoo. However, you do get a great location, friendly […] service, and save up to hundreds of dollars in lodging cost depending where you stay in the Union Square District. This hotel is 1 Block from the Cable Cars on Powell. A great Ramen house is right next door. Some of the best breakfast places are within 1-2 blocks as well as some of the best restaurants in the City. Its walking distant for shopping at the Union Square Stores, WestField Center and Chinatown. If you want a clean and comfortable place to sleep while using most of your time enjoying S.F., I recommend this hotel. I will stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
