"Columbia University Area Hotel"
You get what you pay for, but this was carrying it too far. For two mornings in the row, there was no hot water. Entry to the hotel was a long walk up a narrow stairway. All public areas of the hotel had rugs that appear to have not been cleaned in recent weeks. No elevator that I could find. Hotel advertised free internet, but it appears that it the […] wifi signal cannot reach above the second floor. Rooms were spartan but clean, but absolutely no amenities at all. Response by Marrakech Hotel Thank you for your comments. The Marrakech Hotel is a historic building dating back to 1908. By such, we can not install and elevator. However you might have seen our bell staff that is available 24 hours a day and will help carry any luggage or packages you might need assistance with. Since your stay, we have replaced all the hallway and stairway carpets. While we had an issue with our hot water boiler, that has been repaired and all our rooms have ample amounts of hot water. Our Wi-Fi was upgraded to include up to 10 megs of Wi-Fi speed to all our guests throughout the hotel. I hope you come visit us again when you come back to New York to see all the wonderful improvements we have been doing to the hotel.

be careful when you using expedia's unnamed reservation, especially in Newyork, this is the worst hotel ever I have lived, no elevator, smallest room & bath room, not daily service, annoying noise from heater through the night, will never RECOMMEND!Genuine Expedia guest review

"Disappointed. Not a 3 star hotel."
My husband and I booked this hotel for a 3 day weekend. We were extremely disappointed with the quality for a 3 star hotel. It was really a 1 star hotel. Imagine an old college dorm room with painted walls and dim lighting. The bed slumped in the center and was by far the most uncomfortable bed we've experienced at a 3 star hotel. The springs from the […] bed were poking our backs resulting in restless long nights. Noise can be heard from anyone walking down the hallway or going up the stairs. There are no elevators!! They charged us $2 per bag to hold our luggages. Even our friends from New York who lived a few blocks away giggled at our hotel wondering who would stay here. Overall, we would rather stay at a hostel rather than spending another night at this hotel. Positive: Hotel located right next to the red line. Front desk was helpful, friendly and allowed early check in. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice staff, mediocre hotel"
It was clean, cute, and well decorated. Small but that is to be expected with NYC. The hair dryer in my room was throwing off sparks, so they kindly let me into another room on the same floor so I could use that hair dryer. (FYI there are no elevators, but the doorman is nice and carried my stuff up the stairs for me). I noticed the new room was nicer […] and I needed the hair dryer again the next morning, so I asked if I could be switched. They were nice and let me switch to the bigger, nicer, street view room (instead of a room with a building right up against my window). Seemed like a great idea, but oh my god, I forgot how busy NYC streets were. The window panes were so thin I could hear cars zooming by all night. Broadway is a busy street.... Also, my pillow/bed were not very comfortable, so I woke up not feeling rested and had a headache. Overall - the hotel is a great value assuming you are okay with a few problems like a non-functioning hair dryer, no elevator, uncomfortable bed, and street noise. Walls are super thin also. It was nice for me to be on the upper west side because I had business up at the Columbia hospital on 165th, so it was very convenient. Subway stop is right outside the hotel. (1 train). "Better for younger guests"
Andy at the Service Desk was very nice and pleasant. This hotel is fine if you only need a place to sleep for 1 night. It is not located in the best part of the city, but not the worst either. Too far away from all the sights to walk. This hotel is best suited for younger guests.Genuine Expedia guest review
"No Elevator Hotel in Good Neighborhood"
There was no mention of the lack of an elevator, which makes things very difficult with large, heavy bags. The rooms were old and dirty. It wasn't a boutique hotel and it was noisy due to a large group of young people during my stay. I won't stay here again for the price.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Definitely Will Go Back!"
Well, what a pleasant surprise! At first we were a little cautious - the hotel was in a renovated building. I always stayed in hotels that had been built especialy for their purpose. Had to walk up one flight of stairs to get to the lobby. When we arrived we were greeted by the biggest smile and a HELLO! WELCOME! This was the four sista's "night out" […] and we warned them. They gave us a very comfortable room; two double beds, bath. Room was very clean. Bathroom very clean and new. Every time we passed the front desk, no matter who was on duty at the time, greeted us, "Ah! the sista's night out!" Clearly we were known by all. Great, friendly hotel staff. Very convenient location (our outings/concerts were on or near Broadway). Subway right on the corner. Starbuck's right next door. We will most certainly stay here again, hopefully soon. "Dont get what you expect"
I have never been to a hotel room in the US smaller than the one at Marrakech Hotel. I never had the option on expedia for the number of beds, and when I called the hotel to ask for two beds, I was told I was automatically given one, and tried to upgrade but was told for a room with two beds, its costs more. And for an extra cot, its also extra. Also […] even if we did use the cot option, no one even told me that the room wasnt even big enough for one. The room barely fit a queen bed. I was disappointed in the size of the room for the price I paid. Nevertheless, it was clean and comfortable. Stayed one night in this Hotel in October. How this hotel gets 3 star rating is a mistery to me, as 1,5 star would be more appropriate. Room on fifth floor nd no elevator. "Great customer service, but rooms are small."
My family and I recently went to New York for a 2 week vacation. When we arrived at the hotel, we were extrememly disappointed in the sized of the room. The room was very small, with little room for the 4 of us to move around, and we had less room because we had 2 weeks worth of clothing and luggage. After staying the first night, we were able to change […] rooms, into one that was a little bigger, but it was still very small. The best part about this hotel is the customer service provided by the employees. They were very helpful, and always greeted us with a smile. I would not stay at this hotel again if I were going back for a family vacation, but if I were to return for a short stay, this would be the place I would choose, only because of the great customer service. "Great location. Small room, but great deal for the price!"
The Marrakech Hotel on the Upper West Side of Manhattan is conveniently located near the number 1 train which zips you down to Midtown or Lower Manhattan in 15 to 30 minutes. The hotel has a very comfortable Moroccan-themed lobby where one can relax with his/her laptop. The rooms are very small, but for Manhattan, how much time does one actually spend […] in the hotel? There are lots of restaurants nearby for a variety of ethnic foods. The one downside of the hotel is that it has no elevator, so ask whether it's possible to get a room on a lower floor. The staff is very accomodating. We stayed in Room 32 which faced an alley away from the street and, quite amazingly, there was no street noise! All in all, a nice pleasant experience. When we booked this room--we knew that the room was going to be small. Which was okay with us, since we were only there to sleep. The room was very clean. The staff were awesome. "Tatty dirty overpriced hotel."
Everything about this hotel is cheap and tacky. Just a few examples of why we wouldn't return. - There was no cover on the duvet, just a sheet top and bottom. - The shower curtain was black with mould, it was replaced (as was the shower head) but the replacement was also dirty. - We requested that our radiator be turned off as there was no control. […] It wasn't, and we had to sleep with the air conditioning at full blast. - Worn chipped fittings and carpet. Carpet was filthy, especially at edges. ps. Take your own toiletries. Cheap soap and shampoo randomly issued. Also, we wish we'd taken a laptop. The hotel computers are expensive and are situated in the main corridor off the reception. "Never ever again"

"Excellent budget hotel"
09/20/14 ToriaBirmingham Birmingham
We stayed at the Marrakech in June 2013. The hotel is very quirky and we loved it! The rooms are very small, just enough room for us to have our suitcases by the bed but it was enough room to be our base for the week (after all, who comes to New York to stay in their room?!) The bathroom was fine, lots of hot water and clean. There was free wifi available in the central bar area but it was quite unreliable at times. The staff were helpful. The hotel is right beside a subway station which was fab. There was a great bakery just a short walk down the road, called the Silver Moon - well worth a visit for breakfast. We found the hotel to be quiet, clean and a great base.

And a great location & price! Definitely felt more like a little apartment than just a regular hotel; for tourists who don't want to look "touristy" it was perfect. Right next door to a Starbucks, and close to Central Park. Just down the street go to breakfast at Metro Diner for a fun and cheap and delicious breakfast. The striped carpet in this hotel was really neat, and for a young couple like us the 5 flights of stairs just helped us walk off pancakes, no big deal. Will definitely stay again!

I really liked the Marrakech; I would like to have said that I loved it - and awarded it four stars instead of just three. In essence, Marrakech has the formula just right: it is a quirky, well-run, good quality budget hotel on the Upper West Side. The room was clean and pleasant, the shower (roomy, with overhead faucet and sliding glass door) was excellent. Arriving mid-morning, a phone call resulted in a gratifying early check in, and I found myself just off the lobby, in a room with the sidewalk just below my window. What a shame that the door between the lobby area and the hallway outside my door was banging, every time somebody went through it. And music playing loudly in the lobby/bar area beyond midnight struck me as silly as well as irritating. But these are minor flaws - with a bit attention to detail, this could well be a terrific budget hotel, as distinct from a very good one.
"Less Expensive Place to Stay in Manhattan"
08/22/14 TerriRoss Albuquerque, New Mexico
The Marrakech Hotel is located in Manhattan near many NYC attractions, that is why we chose it. We enjoyed our stay and found the hotel to be adequate for our needs. The hotel is a converted building and has a quirky floor set-up including the fact that it has no elevator which might be off putting for some people. The desk staff carried our bags up the stairs when we arrived so we didn't mind not having an elevator. The price for our room was very reasonable for Manhattan. Our room had one bed and was small but fine for our needs. The bathroom was ok, but unremarkable. The room was clean and the maid service prompt. We were not used to the sounds of the city and found the room a little noisy but we got used to it. It was nice to be able to see out onto the street and watch people go by. Desk staff were friendly. The lobby is attractive and has a small bar. We enjoyed being able to get coffee right next door at Starbucks and there are food carts and street vendors that we enjoyed getting breakfast at. There are many food places nearby including some neighborhood groceries. We walked a few blocks to have dinner at Cleopatra's Needle and hear some live music which was fun. The hotel is a short walk from Riverside Park in one direction and Central park in the other direction. The Subway Station 103 Street Station 1 is right next to the hotel and made it easy to get to other areas of the city. It was nice to be able to stay in Manhattan to be close to the subway and walking distance to several attractions we wanted to see. This hotel worked well for us.

My partner and I visited this hotel in July 2014 for a 6 night stay. No complaints!! It was super affordable, the room was clean and bigger than we needed, fresh towels every day! Mere steps away from the subway, ben & jerry's, absolute bagels, Amla (super yummy Indian food), St John the Divine Cathedral!! I loved this super cute hotel :)
"No elevator, tiny dirty room, nice staff"
08/13/14 Judy S Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
My husband and I decided to try this hotel while visiting our son at school. The hotel was (relatively) close to campus, and reasonably priced, so we figured, why not? WELL...the visit started when we had to walk up a long, steep staircase to get to the lobby on the second floor. No-one offered to help with our bags. It was another flight of stairs up to our room, which was tiny. I could have lived with that if it was clean, but it wasn't. There was a hair on the side of the bathtub and some kind of small plastic bottle that had been discarded on the floor in the corner of the bedroom (both items remained there both days we were there). After settling in we discovered that we had one hand towel and no bathmat. The only window looked right out at another window, so we had to keep the blinds drawn - so we got no natural light. The bed was really uncomfortable - we got very little sleep. The next morning, before we went out, we asked for extra towels. The young woman at the desk was very nice, and said, "Of course." When we got back that night: two towels (for two of us) - no extra. One hand towel. We did get a bathmat that night. We did notice that most of the other people in the hotel seemed to be in their 20's, and seemed very comfortable there. Maybe that's the optimal clientele for this hotel. There's a Starbucks right next door, a subway stop right across the street, and the staff were all very nice. As for us - we don't plan to return.
"Great little hotel that exceeds expectations"
08/12/14 Nick B Plymouth, United Kingdom
WE stayed at the Marrakech on Broadway for a short (3 night) stay from England - our first visit to New York. Given the very modest budget for this hotel, we though it was fantastic. The rooms are small, obviously in this price range, but they are spotless, everything works, and they are cleaned every day with fresh towels etc. All you would expect at a much higher priced hotel. The shower is good, and the bed V. Comfortable. The room does not have drink making facilities (common in North America), but the hotel is right next door to a Starbucks - so no problems there! The best thing about the hotel are the lovely staff - all the ones we met were fairly young, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and very helpful - really nothing is too much trouble. A few lessons learnt: 1) when booking, ask the hotel about the best arrangements to get from you airport to the hotel - the have good local contacts. We just jumped in a cab at the airport, and got a bit ripped off, I fear. 2) Two places to try - "Regional", just a few blocks down Broadway does simple Italian fare, but the quality is very high indeed. I had one of the best pasta dishes I have ever eaten. And walk up to 120 St W to Toms Restaurant - very inconspicuous, but great food, and the BEST milkshake you will ever try!! We plan to come back to NY, and wopuld definitely stay at the Marrakech again. A big Thanbk you to all their team.
"Overpriced Cold Shower"
08/10/14 Lindsay J Boston, Massachusetts
I stayed there with a friend in May of 2014. We were in NY for a fun weekend and this place was recommended to us. The only plus about this place is it's proximity to the train station. We arrived to discover that there was no elevator, which I felt should have been mentioned when we were booking. The room was tiny, just enough for 2 beds and wall TV. The bathroom wasn't dirty, but could use come updating/repair (cracked sink). As we were getting ready for a night out, I discovered that there was no hot water in the shower. After telling the front desk, we were assured it would be fixed that evening, but came back and found it hadn't been touched. Since we were staying only one night, there was no point in asking again. We took our cold showers the next morning and were off to checkout. Had the room been cheaper, I'm sure the space and cold water wouldn't have been so much of an issue. I don't think I will be staying here again.

I stayed at the Marrakech Hotel from June 19 - 22 with my boyfriend, brother and his wife. I had initially booked one room with 2 beds. When we arrived they advised that the room with the 2 beds was not available but we would get 2 separate rooms at the same price. This was excellent news for us which mean't we could have more privacy. The room was comfortable, clean, bathroom was clean, a little small but to be expected in NY. The location of the hotel was marvelous, the subway entrance is literally a few feet away. There are loads of restaurants within walking distance. This was our first time in NY and we had never used the Subway here. Every morning I would ask the staff for directions on which subway to take to get to our destinations. From the moment we arrived, all of the staff were very welcoming and friendly. They assisted us with our luggage, provided excellent suggestions on where to eat and how to get around. The free wifi came in very handy for us also. This little hotel is excellent value for money. I would definitely return.
