Stunning location, excellent service, and very comfortable rooms. They think of everything. We can't really recommend dinner there; it was very good, but didn't live up to the expectation set by the high price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Doesn't get much better!"
Absolutely stunning location in Big Sur. Come and relax and be pampered. We stayed in a Tree House and were not disappointed, ours even had an ocean view along with the mountain and forest views. Great restaurant. Friendly, accomodating staff. First class all of the way.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Paying for an amazing view is ok, but paying in excess of $200 for a normal meal is ridiculous.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Excellent hotel for a special occasion"
We all loved the hotel. The rooms were spectacular. The dining was a little formal and far too much for our taste. However we will certainly be back fantastic relaxation after a site seeing trip to San FranciscoGenuine Hotels.com guest review

We splurged on two nights here and I'm really glad we did. I won't spend ages repeating what others have said but I can confirm that the views are spectacular, the room (we had an upper coast house) was beautiful and the staff were lovely and helpful. We didn't eat dinner in the restaurant but we did have the breakfast and ordered some room service. We're not big cooked breakfast fans so it was great that the pastry, fruit and granola selection was brilliant, quite often that's an afterthought to the cooked breakfast even in good hotels. The room service ended up arriving a little late because the was some sort of confusion (that I still don't quite understand) but they were very apologetic when it got to us and it was still warm and tasted great. We spent loads of time walking round the grounds and saw deer and wild birds, and the infinity pools are beautiful. The best thing for me was the attention to detail: at the time of booking they ask if it's special occasion and we said it was our honeymoon. When we arrived they gave us a little congratulation card, with a half bottle of champagne. But more importantly each time we spoke with a different member of staff in reception they mentioned it and said congratulations. They're only little things but it makes a real difference to a stay.

Fantastic concept and amazing inn! The infinity pool is breathtaking especially when the fog rolls in and you feel like you are all alone in the clouds! It was bit cooler than we expected but the room felt totally safe and cozy. The restaurant was super and the staff was great too! It was definitely worth the effort and money. I love this place and would return in a heartbeat!

This hotel is a piece of heaven. The little cabanas are so pretty, some have an ocean view while others have a view of the beautiful forest, they are all extremely well decorated in a traditional style and very clean (ours also had a fireplace facing the bed). The attention to details in this hotel truly makes the difference: from the little gifts in the bedrooms to the complementary champagne, wine bottles and snacks in the mini bar... Everything is made to make you feel spoiled. The heated infinity pools offer a breathtaking view, the forest trail is not to miss and the food at the hotel restaurant is delicious. This hotel is just perfect! It's definitely on the pricey side but it it is worth every penny in my opinion!

Had a lovely week traveling from Los Angeles to San Fran on a Harley Davidson. The views were breathtaking. We did need to stop in Big Sur and unfortunately this was one place we did not make advanced reservations. Being a Tuesday I thought we would be okay. We made our way up the road all were booked. We then pulled up to the Post Ranch. I started to ask if they had any availability and was told no. The young man at the gate said do you know our rooms start at around 800.00 in a tone that offended me. A simple "we do not have anything avail" would have sufficed. To look at us like we couldnt afford it was rude. Maybe I want to book two!

Traveled from the Napa Valley to LA, and spent 2 nights at the South Coast House. Not cheap, at $2500 per night, but well worth it. Check in was really slick and professional, transporting us to our house using the hotels fleet of Lexus SUV's. The house was amazing, a well stocked fridge on our arrival, and a superb demonstration from the staff, of how our temporary high tech home worked. Nothing was too much trouble, and although the Ranch is spread out, while at the pool, if you fancy a drink, you pick up the phone, and its delivered via the Lexus within a few minutes. The views are absolutely amazing.

Depends where you stay in the compound. Much to commend it, nevertheless no escaping the fact that overall this looks like an attempt to upgrade a former boy scout camp in the woods by adding all the touches one can think of, if one were to be in Monte Carlo. But you are not. You are in the woods, albeit with the same great view you have experienced gratis all the way along the highway to Big Sur. But the trouble with attempts to upgrade camps in the 'woods' is that no one tells the bugs they are to behave accordingly. I had a small bark scorpion crawling up my arm which I brushed off at speed when it woke me at 6am. [ I still have a photograph of it taken on the bed sheets. ] To paraphrase VP Cheney 'A boy scout camp with lipstick is still a boy scout camp'. It has some smart bungalows added to the front. Excellent, no doubt, if you rent one of these but the back of them represent your view if you are one row back from them - as we were in the 'butterfly' cabin over the staff quarters and work place - which is sited incorrectly bang in the middle of the row of the guest cabins instead of being kept well away. Breakfast is very good but dinner is served in a dining room so dark that it was impossible to see the food. We have eaten in supposed 'atmospheric romantic darkened restaurants' world wide but have never seen - or failed to 'see' - anything to combat this. The food, from what we could sense, was beyond terrible and this was acknowledged by them. This, however can happen in the best of hotels from time to time, and if and when this happens we do not as a rule ask that the cost be credited to our account. We believe to do so has the effect of rendering the complaint suspect. The swimming pool is in a field about 600 yards away at the bottom of a hill. [ Never saw anyone use it.] This then is a bad review but of course subjective. Many people appear to love it although there is a view that it's not as good as it used to be. [ But as Orson Welles once said when being asked if the above mentioned Monte Carlo is as good as it used to be replied " Dear lady...nowhere is as good as it used to be."] But hotels worldwide are certainly better than they used to be, hence this one needs serious attention. As said then - it surely all 'depends': Were you to book one of the cabins overlooking the sea then you have indeed booked something hard to beat - anywhere. But other than that, whoa. And woe.
"A review that is hard to write"

I will preface this review by saying that I have many excellent stays here. This was my 8th time staying here and it was disappointing this time. I will list the good and bad. Check in was backed up but the staff were nice-the additional rooms have created longer wait times. The Guy that took us to our room was really nice and remebered Us. We spent the first night in an upper butterfly room that had soiled carpet and cobwebs in the vaulted ceiling. There was a funky smell by the wet bar and the room was outdated and in dire need of a renovation. The bed was very comfortable though. The second room was a Tree House which also had soiled carpet and uncomfortable chairs. The bed was hard as a rock and we had to have a mattress topper put on it. The room was more updated and better maintained than the Butterfly but less comfortable overall. Both rooms had amazing drinks and snacks that were included in the rate which was nice. The soap and shampoo pumps had nice products but they are a harbor for germs-recyclable individual containers would have been much nicer. I was given bar soap when I requested it. The small stainless steel hot tub at the north end of the property had milky water and was unappealing. The Jade pool and lap pool were nicer than ever. Breakfast was great and the food was better than ever but once again the additional rooms have created longer wait times. The nature walk that used to be amazing and extensive when Billy Post led it has become short and unencompassing. The new rooms at the south end look very nice but are less rustic and more mainstream. The staff were very nice and provided great service, but everything here feels very corporate these days. I was longing for the homey old days with less rooms and people. I had trouble writing this but I need to be honest. The location and views are still astounding. But at the high prices here things should be close to perfect.

I have stayed here many times over the last several years. Always peaceful and beautiful, no matter the time of the year. Upper level Mountain room has great views, updated floors and bath. Very near the hot tub on the north end. One tip, walk down below this pool to a secluded bench with a bottle of wine from your room for a quiet spot all to yourself and contemplate life…. Be prepared for sticker shock though : $1000/night for the room and $$$$$ for dinner and wine but what a special place.

We decided to stay here to see if it came up to expectations - it did. I guess when you look at the rate you could argue 'too much' - but I think it is about value not price. We were nervous it may be over promising but that wasn't the case. From the moment we arrived the service was unobtrusive but impeccable. We were made so welcome by the reception staff who served us bubbles while they explained everything. Whisked to our coast room in the Lexus and everything unloaded for us with the minimum of fuss - then THAT view... The upper coast room had a wonderful aspect and it was helped by a cloudless day. We pretty much spent half our time sat on that deck thereafter - at all hours - marvelling as the forest creatures passed quietly by, all of them in families of various sizes - deer, turkeys, partridges, rabbits, chipmunks, humming birds, eagles, etc etc... The room service we ordered was perfect - everything arrived quickly and just as we ordered it (I'm fussy what goes on my burger..). Very comfortable on our deck, it meant we didn't have to leave the view. The room was extremely comfortable - I particularly liked all the little touches like binoculars and easy to light firewood. The toiletries are wonderful. I have never in my life actually bought more of the shower gel - until now! The scent of it takes me back there. I'd recommend an early start to make the most of it - we were rewarded by being above the clouds one morning as they rolled back off the cliffs you sit on top of - just stunning. Breakfast was a delight - first there we had the pick of tables, inside or out the views are all fantastic. The selection of home made mini cakes got my waistline in real trouble, but it was all delicious, sweet and savoury. Our first full day we explored - what a peaceful charming place. The woodland and meadow trails take you to some really pretty places, and the backdrop of the mountains behind is always a treat waiting through the gaps. The infinity pools - with waiter service IN the pool - are a delight. A real slice of paradise after a good walk. Our highlight was dinner in the restaurant - we are lucky enough to have tried a few places and the restaurant here is right up with the very best. We thought the service was absolutely excellent - friendly, efficient and timely. The sommelier made a great choice for us - we gave him a budget and he didn't even get near it, but it was perfect. The tasting menu is very generous - go hungry and you will not be disappointed. A very memorable meal In a wonderful setting. While we were setting off for dinner we spied the housekeeping staff who must have been aware of our booking and were quietly waiting for us to go to dinner to service our room. The same thing happened at breakfast - when we came back the room had been serviced - beautifully. A lovely touch and so relaxing compared to the usual knock and enter when you are stepping out the shower! Another evening I ate at the bar alone while my girlfriend caught an early night. Out on the terrace I was able to use their massive telescope - under expert supervision - I've never seen the rings of Jupiter for real before! I'm glad I stayed up! We thought every aspect of our stay was wonderful - even checking out - which we HATED doing - was effortless. Our car was waiting and our luggage placed in it while we settled up without us even noticing. This is one of the very best places we have ever stayed and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

What a weekend on of tranquility and peace of mind. I booked this for our 10th anniversary and it was worth every penny. Not only were the grounds exquisite, but the food and service were top notch. As soon as you arrive you are greeted with a glass of wine or champagne and the friendliest staff on earth. They quickly go over everything and take you up to your room. You don't have to lift a finger. When we arrived I had booked a tree house with an ocean view, and it was a great room. Nothing to complain about at all but when I saw the views from the Ocean Rooms there was no place I'd rather stay. I went down to the office and told the guys my dilemma and even offered to pay for the upgrade since it was my mistake. Without hesitation they not only found me an ocean room for the second night but offered to keep my rate the same which was very much appreciated. So we got the best of both worlds. We staying the tree house the first night and had the best surprise when it was night time. There is a triangular window in the roof that shows nothing but stars at night, it was incredible to stare at while lying in the bed. The next day we switched rooms and enjoyed the experience of complete privacy as we sat on your deck literally cliff side with nothing but the ocean to look at. If you are not into privacy and relaxation then this is not the place for you. Besides dinner or the dipping pool you may not see another person. Now on to the food. This hotel has you covered. From the free snacks and drinks in the room to the amazing food at the Sierra Mar for dinner and breakfast I could not of asked for a better time. My one piece of advice to anyone who is going. When you choose your dipping pool always try to get a seat at the one near the restaurant first, because that one has waiter service all day for drinks and food and if relaxation is what you had in mind then not getting up to get a drinks is what you will want. I am already looking forward to my next trip up there to just get away and see the friendly staff again. It seems expensive on paper but once you have the experience you know it was worth every penny.
