Upon reading horrible ratings from other customers at other hotels near this location and this price range.. we were expecting the worst. But honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. The door locked. The window had a screen. The room had a towel. The bed had clean sheets. No bed bug tracks on the walls. This was a step up from other reviews I had read. […] Sure it was noisy, you feared for your life walking down the street, but honestly that's down town SF for ya. The manager lady might have been the nicest human being on the planet A+ service. The maid.. needs to be fired. The room had what we guessed was candle wax on the heater. The bed didn't have a blanket. Burn marks on the carpet, packing tape holding the wall together, hair in the sink, stains of some kind all along the base boards. The room had seen better days for sure back in 80s. The hotel just needs a handyman/maid that cares as much as the manager did about service. The innkeeper made the Vagabond a place I would return to. She was ALWAYS available, extremely helpful & was very attentive in making sure our stay was as good as possible. Not such a great neighborhood at night, but the daylight shines on some funky stores & great eats. Very convenient location.

I was working an event at the Concourse Exhibition Center, and this is the closest hotel to the venue. I just needed a room so I could sleep for a few hours between shifts, and this worked fine. The room was very clean, quiet, and the parking was free.

I stayed here last week with my BF, and chose the hotel mainly based on location in the SOMA area. The manager was very welcoming and made it clear that anything not to our liking would be corrected immediately. It's a small property but I was familiar with the Vagabond Inn brand, and the decent reviews on this site pushed me into choosing this place. […] The rooms are located on the second level (above the free but limited parking area), protected by a security gate accessed by your room key card. Our room was the standard queen, with Dish TV, microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker, iron/ ironing board and blow dryer. Everything was clean -- Im a nurse so I checked it out before getting into the bed. The bathroom was spotless, and had updated shower curtains and a modern curved shower curtain rod. The carpet looked clean and although we didn't use either the microwave or fridge they appeared clean without any odors. The only downsides were the smallish room itself and one small area of peeling wallpaper in the bathroom (which I pointed out to the maintenance guy when he came to get some of our used towels). We didn't use housekeeping because we slept late every day, however the sweet Asian housekeeper knocked on the door without fail to ask if we needed anything. To be honest, I was so pleasantly surprised about the good quality of the property I dropped in during the stay to tell the manager how pleased I was, since she seemed genuinely interested in feedback. Ok location with low pre-paid rate. Free parking though limited. Can walk easily to civic center or slim's. Not for light sleepers as it is next to a bar and a busy road. Bathroom very clean but towels were thin and worn and not enough of them if it was a family staying there. No shampoo which is fine with me as I bring my own. Carpet needed vacuuming […] and they do not move furniture to vacuum behind. Internet did not work at all. I can access through my phone but this was a major fail for me returning for business. Beds and pillows ok. TV had good channel selection. Outside has good paint job. Felt much safer staying in SOMA than the civic/tenderloin area (obviously). Staff was friendly. Overall my stay was great, simple, no frills. We just needed a place to stay for the night. The only thing I would caution people on is there are 31 rooms in this hotel and only about 10 parking spaces. Had an interview the next day, wanted to be as near as possible to interview location. I arrived 7pm, check in wasn't a problem. BAD: The room upon entering didn't look worth the price i paid, broken door frame, dirty carpet, stained material on the seats of the chair. It had the lingering smell of urine near the sink near bathroom. I thought i could […] ignore it, time passed, i couldn't, so i left to grab a bite to eat. I called to ask desk clerk about a possible room change, I explained the urine smell etc, and she said it had been 2 hours and it was too late( I know i should have made a U-turn, as soon as i smelled the urine, but i just didn't want to be"THAT guy"). So, i said fine, "Can i get some new sheets, because after laying in the bed, i was a little itchy?". She gave me a bit of a hard time about it, "cleaning people clean rooms everyday" saying to me "It's RARE that anyone has complained about any smells..." etc (Hmmm, I doubt that). THE GOOD: Upon my return, the desk clerk was leaving shift, and said to me "There is the man in charge.." I spoke to the gentleman, explained that i wasn't there to stir up problems and that i just want to rest comfortably for my interview. He said "I understand, you just want to rest..." and handed me a new blanket and sheets. In the end, it KINDA worked out. I got my rest, made my interview early. This is a fairly decent inexpensive hotel. The biggest factor is free parking. The room was clean, but I didn't have any coffee after the first day in my room. So that was disappointing. For what I needed to get done, it was in a good location. However, you will not be in the best place in town.

so first of all it's a motel, not that that matters. it is pretty convenient location being about a block an a half from the bart and having a bus station across the street. The neighborhood is a little shady, totally fine in the day, little less at night. The actual "hotel" is super cute. It is a revamped, trendy little place. The location of the hotel was nice, about 20-25min walk to Main Street and to Union Square, not too bad. If you walk along the big streets, it doesn't even get too scary in the evenings. Service was ok at the hotel. The room was also ok for shorter visit, for that price the size was ok. BUT internet didn't work very well. It worked when it wanted, […] and most of time it didn't want. So the promising "High speed internet" in our case didn't happen. The continental breakfast included coffee and some fruits, and this was actually the reason why we booked the hotel, and we were really disappointed. Also one morning we got a really nice wake up-"call", when someone started to do some construction on the roof right above us. It was also pretty cold in the room, it kinda blew wind through the door... Parking is free, if you have good luck and there is a place free in the garage. We had luck and our car stood the whole time in parking lot. If you have no luck, you need to find a parking place, which will be hard. Only at nights, between 6pm and 7am parking was free next to the street in front of the hotel. In the mornings, though, you would have to move the car again. So, in description there sould read that parking free, if place left. There were more rooms in the hotel than parking places, so it doesn't go one to one. So nice little place, but personally I think I'm gonna search another place to stay for my next visit. Read more
