loved the hotel the beach and staff. All of that was wonderful not close to anything. little more selection in eating options. high price for internet should be lower or free would stay there again

Great hotel but very expensive once you arrive. Every single thing is "extra" ... and I mean everything! On site parking, tennis courts, beach gear, etc. Food and booze is extremely expensive and no budget options. A martini is $16 and breakfast is $32....per person.

Sept.29/Oct.9 2011. From the time we pulled up till the time we drove away we were made to feel like old friends. I have never been treated so well by hotel staff. Cleaning staff came by the room atleast 4 times a day keeping the ice bowl full and making sure we hadf everything we needed. Fresh towels, soap, and lotions were always available. Water was perfect. One thing of note is the weather at Mauna Kea seems to always be better than in Kona. If your looking for a party scene hotel then this is not the hotel for you. If your looking for a perfect beach great weather and a quiet relaxing time with other wonderful people then you will find no better. My wife and I are 34-39 which is younger than average at Mauna Kea. Prices at hotel are not the cheapest on the island. The breakfast buffet is outstanding! Hadn't been back in 25 years so not sure what to expect, but pleasantly surprised, did not disappoint. The minute you pull up you can tell it is beautifully understated and relaxed. Went to visit all the other neighboring resorts only to keep repeating, "It's not the Mauna Kea". Couple of caveats, the Mountain Room was lovely, overlooking the entrance, […] not the parking lot (yes!). However, the heavy duty lawn/blower equipment would start at 4:30 am, so next time might try to splurge for an ocean view. Maid service was great, although one day they forgot to clean the room, so we had to call (just a hiccup). Dining options were disappointing. Monettes (the former Batik) was inviting but the food was not up to par for the prices. The menu was not up to date, didn't reflect the available selections or how the items were actually being prepared. Seemed like they were experimenting (on us), and at premium prices. Manta's has a primo view but we felt like we were imposing on the staff. We arrived at a 8:15, made a reservation for 8:30, the last seating. We came back at 8:34 at which point they had to check with the chef if we could still be served. It seemed that they just wanted to get out of there! Food not so impressive. Great casual meals at the Hau Tree down on the beach. Plenty of other dining choices in the area (Merriman's in Waimea a big hit), but it's too bad the in house choices are lacking. We just stayed at the Mauna Kea and absolutely loved it. It was a fabulous experience. We had a room with an incredible view of the ocean. We went to the Luau which was a lot of fun here. The best way to summarize our thoughts about the Mauna Kea is to say that we thought it was aspiring to be as good as the Four Seasons or Ritz type hotels (and charging equivalent prices) but really fell short. The service was mediocre at best in multiple areas of the hotel: - The beach service was terrible. people reserve the few cabanas available […] at like 6 am by leaving towels and books, then don't show up for 5 hours to claim them. the beach staff did a shoddy job of policing this. one day there weren't enough towels to go around, and sometimes it was hard to get someone to set up a chair and umbrella. - We ate at Manta restaurant for our last night and thought the service was terrible (waited 10 min to get anyone to come take a drink order), and a band of wild cats prowled all around our table during the entire meal. - The spa is tiny with few amenities and the service there was poor as well. The receptionist was unaccommodating, and my massage was among the worst I've had (and also among the most expensive). On the up side: the rooms are really very comfy and beautifully furnished, the snorkeling just off the beach was fantastic, and the grounds are lovely and well kept. All in all, the Mauna Kea really has a long way to go to compete with other hotels in the same price range. We would not return to this hotel having stayed at other 4-5 star places in Hawaii for equal price or less that had infinitely better service. Read more

I am now used to having hotels give me the option to re-sue my towels, etc. (leave clean towels hanging, put dirty towels on the floor, leave a card on the bed if you don't need to have the sheets changed every day, etc.). Paradise is not perfection, but the Mauna Kea does try pretty hard. If you can have just a little Aloha spirit... then you will love this place. The beauty is GREATER than photos tell (how rare is that?) the bottom of the bay looks like it has been groomed by snowcats! The bay has two coral reefs (either side) with turtles by day and Mantas (no stinger!) […] at night. There are several restaurants to choose from and they range from good to great. I would encourage you for varieties sake to take some meals at the Fairmont Orchid (Brown's and the beach cafe), and the three restaurants of the Four Seasons when you are doing things by the airport or Kona. The rooms are very comfortable and elegant in a way that stresses comfort with a bit of the tropics. The view is great. If you have trouble walking I would avoid the Plumeria wing as it a bit removed from the main hotel, restaurants and the valets. The most magical time we spend in Hawaii is the time swimming with the dolphins in the wild... try a charter like Honu Kona dive or kayaking down at Capt Cook memorial in the morning where they often show. Leider steht das Hotel zum Verkauf, was man jedoch nicht bemerkt und ich nur durch einen Zufall erfahren habe. Die Hotelangestellten sind freundlich zuvorkommend, aber nicht aufdringlich. Die Parkanlage im Top Zustand. Die Zimmer ein Gedicht bis ins Detail (hier lohnt sich ein Zimmer zum Meer!!!). Zu hoffen bleibt, dass das Hotel einen würdigen Käufer finden wird. Ein winziges Manko: Das Internet kostet, was für mich ein No-Go in der heutigen Zeit ist. Man kann sich auch streiten, ob die Kosten für das Breakfast gerechtfertigt sind, doch auf Hawaii sind solche Spässe überall eher im hohen Bereich. Daher... Die Lage des Hotels vermag im ersten Augenblick erstaunen, da sich es auf der eher kargen Seite der Insel befindet. Aber der Vorteil ist, dass es massiv weniger regnet. Zudem ist der dazugehörige Beach einer der schönsten der Insel. Wie üblich auf Hawaii keine Algen und der Sand ist fein. Mega! Ich finde selten so lobende Worte für ein Hotel und noch seltener schreibe ich eine Abhandlung, doch das Mauna Kea verdient es mit jeder Zeile. Ein Juwel. Read more
