"Excellent base to explore greater Miami"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 6, 2012
Hotel staff very friendly. nice lobby, good breakfast with fresh fruits and no plastic dishes. After complaining about the size of suite we were sold for 5 persons (definitely too small and not a fair sale) we were given complimentary upgrade to a two bed room suite by the manager which was very much appreciated. Free parking and free wireless internet are very convenient as well as close access to highway and airport.

Beautiful hotel and pool. The room was modern and clean, however it would have been nice to have a mirror in the main room. The bathroom was very small, too small for four in a room.
"SUCH A LETDOWN!!!"
I was traveling to Miami on business with a colleague and was suggested by a colleague who lives in Miami to stay at the Sheborne because she had been there recently for a party at the bar and liked the ambience. I booked both our rooms from Hotels.com. We arrived late Friday afternoon so both the outside and the lobby were buzzing with people. We were […] both placed on opposite sides of the hotel. Then I arrived to my room, I was astonished. The carpet was stained and ragged, the kitchenette furniture was chipped, there was big hole in the wall above the doorway, and the white walls were dirty. The ONLY redeeming quality of this room was that it faced the ocean so I had a beautiful view of both the pool and the beach. My colleague had a similar experience in his room, but he did not even have a good view. Room Service is only for breakfast so if you want to eat anytime later, you will have to find a restaurant who delivers. The staff, except for one maid and a bartender at the outside restaurant/bar who were the friendliest people, left ALOT to be desired. More times than not they were aloof and did not go above what they were supposed to do their job. I left a jacket at the desk for 2 days because I was running an errand and forgot to pick it up. when I remembered, I asked the concierge and the first thing he said was the hotel is not responsible for personal property, before he even looked for the jacket. I was extremely disappointed by my experience. Read more
"Customer Service"
Without rating the staff, the hotel by itself was wonderful. Great location, nice, clean room that has been recently renovated. The staff could not have been more rude if they tried. Checking in was a hassle, and they were very unwelcoming. I have stayed next door at the Shore Club and will probably stay there next time because their staff is very friendly […] and focused on customer service...I would rather pay more and have great customer service. Hiden fees such as the lack of perking should have been heilighted at booking.
Poor service, not renovated or anything close to the online pictures. There were doing construction in the building and we could hear it through the walls. Loud and poor conditions.

Overall it was not a good experience. Most of the front desk staff are not friendly. The bellhops were the friendliest. "Sleek in South Beach"
A very fashionista hotel.. looks great but some of the touches are impractical or don't work.. this is a hotel designed by a club owner not a hotel franchisee. It is the vibe that seems to matter more than the details.. there is no mirror in the room.. only in bathroom.. the air conditoning duct was in the closet.. the queen beds were more like twins.. […] there was no shampoo/soap etc in the bathroom.. had to ask for it carpets in the elevators were not high transit and had chewing gum etc stuck to them.. the pool was wonderful.. but a pool party took it over on a saturday which forced guests to go elsewhere but they should have been offered complementary use of the beach chairs etc that the hotel had on the seaside to compensate... a sofa might have been more useful in the room than the desk and office chair that were offered in a resort hotel. TV signal was very poor!! Resort fee added to the room cost was a bit cheeky as the hotel was a resort in the first place.. no-one stays there for business.. complementary cocktail included in the resort fee was vodka and grapefruit juice in a plastic cup.. not exactly projecting a classy image.. we passed on this "extra" after the first sampling... My significant other and I, stayed for a weekend. I must admit that the shelborne is a very good looking hotel. Upon arrival we were frustrated. We were assured an early checking but that did not happen. We were promised a premium room, it was so small, the view overlooked a dilapidated building, and had one mirror in the bathroom. Our keys to our room never worked so we had to go up and down the dirty elevator to the front desk, wait in line to get them fixed. "OMG"
This was the worst place I've stayed. I'm not the world travler, but .... When my family & I arrived and checked in, one room was not cleaned. It appeared as if someone has just gotten out of bed. It took them about 2 hours total, because they had to figure out what happen. So, while that's going on, all 6 of us are stuffed in one room waiting for them […] to clean it. After they finished cleaning, we notice...no phone, mold on the ceiling, no cups for water (etc), not enough towels, Frig, didn't work. This was one of the newer rooms that was renovated..(really). The other room...outlet had tape and paint/plaster peeling off, condiments on the Frig had been used, had an old Frig in the room that was old and rusted, curtains were dirty and nasty, balcony had no table or chair, toliet kept running after you flush (maintenance guy had to fix), no shower, toliet paper holder fell off the wall, drain in the tub was rusted and old. This was just the rooms..... We were promised Happy Hour 6 - 8pm & Breakfast...it only lasted one hour and the rest of the drinks were at an discount. The people that worked in the restaurant had no idea what we were talking about. There was no Breakfast. This was important because, we had our children and we wanted them to have food before we continued our Cruise vacation. This was one or the reason we chose this hotel. Paid a Resort fee, that we didn't use any "Resort" type accomodations...didn't use the pool, because by time they finished cleaning, we had to get food. We didn't have any drinks, and the rooms were sooooo far from Resort type. For the rate, we could have stayed at a Marriott property or any other place for that matter. If you read this, please don't waste your money. You will be disappointed Read more

This hotel was a joke. They "overbooked" and didn't have a room available for us upon our arrival. To top it off I stood at the front desk forever waiting on the manager to come pull me to the side to disclose this information. It was ridiculous to say the least.

Not worth the money. Run down bathroom. Old furniture. In need of remodeling, not at all modern.
"one night at the Shelborne"
OVERPRICED! A good party hotel for the young on a Sat afternoon but other than that it was just a ripoff. Pick a nicer 3 or 4 star hotel for the same price. At least you won't have holes in the floor and AC that doesnt work well.
"Shelbourn in South Beach"
Overall the hotel is nice. its better if you have stayed there before because some of the rooms have been renovated and if you know that in advance you can ask for those rooms. If I had known that I would have been really satisfied. I stayed 2 nights 1 in the old room which was pretty poor and the last night in the new room which was really nice. Some […] stuff is still a work in progress like the Tv reception but who really cares when you are in South Beach, TV isnt what you are there for. Food prices are a little ridiculous I had chicken, fries and mac& cheese 63.00 and it was a small portion thats a bit over the top. Outside of that the hotel is a sweet property and the staff is very nice and helpful. I will stay there again Read more

"Make sure you reserve a Premium/renovated room"
This hotel has rooms that vary greatly - the rooms that are not renovated are disgusting. I was able to upgrade to a Premium/renovated room for additional charge (luckily they had one available) which was much better but overall I was still not satisfied with the hotel and would not recommend staying here.
"Shelborne Hotel Miami"
This was the worst hotel experience we have ever had. The woman checking us in was nasty and busy yelling at a coworker about something. The room was decrepit and everything was broken. The walls hadnt been painted in 50 years. The toilet didnt flush and light bulbs and electric outlets were not working. After much complaining the next day, we finally […] were switched to a renovated room. One night it took the hotel more than 50 minutes to retrieve our car from the garage. The place is run by inexperienced kids. It needs to be closed down. Read more
"Terrible Rooms"
Although the location and general areaas of the hotel are fantastic, the rooms are practically in its original 1950's condition. The TV belongs to a museum, not to mention the mini fridge. "DISAPPOINTED - REGULAR SO BEACH TRAVELER"
I travel to this area of South Beach 4-5 times/yr. This was my first stay at the Shelbourne -- and it didn't stack up to the local competetion. First - the head parking attendant seem to be having a bad day - had a bad attitude. Turns out he had that attitude the 3 days I was there. Then at check in I find out the nightly rate didn't include the "Resort […] Fee" which was presented as not optional. Why not include it in the published rate instead of making a bad first impression? The continential breakfast is a joke. The room was very "tired" - old furniture and not very clean. The room size was pretty good and the hotel location is good - but comparatively speaking - There is much better value at some of the hotels close by. Read more

"Shelborne, South Beach"
The location is great, and the pool and its staff were very nice. We were in a renovated room, however you can tell that the renovations were done hastily with towel racks installed upside down and bright blue wiring tacked on the walls. There is also only one functioning elevator, so they are packed and take forever. The front desk was tough to deal […] with. Our room wasn't ready until almost 5pm and when we called the night before for our car to be in front for 430am the next morning so we could make our flight, they had not done it. Read more

1 response by Shelborne South Beach"If you are after location, stay here."
I was skeptical about staying at the Shelbourne after the mixed reviews I had read. And the reviews were very true to my experience. The positives: the pool, the price and the location The negatives: Check in took entirely too long (30-45 minutes) and I was told they were out of the room I had asked for (ocean front king). Only one elevator was working […] for 17 floors (you do the math), and since I was on the 15th floor it was kind of a necessity. Also, since there was only one elevator it was constantly filled with service staff (including those doing renovations, and room service -- no room for the guests!). Continental breakfast was misleading and several people commented on it when checking out. Overall, the hotel was fine for a cheap stay on Collins. It was no Shore Club, Raleigh or Delano, but it was fine for one night. Pool was terrific, and location was awesome. But other than those two things, it was average at best. Read more
Thank you for your review of the Shelborne South Beach. I am pleased that you were happy with our facilities. "The Shelbourne - Excellent Service"
The service could not have been better! The only hiccup was the elevators were not the best.
Thank you for your review and the positive feedback regarding our staff. We currently renovated our elevators so they can be more efficient and more esthetically pleasing. We will be having TV screens in our elevators up and running shortly. Hope to see you again at the hotel soon.

The only thing I will complain about is the elevators...I waited 15 min one time...the elevators jump around and never go directly to your floor....the a/c was real bad...no air flow....it was warm n my room and never cool..
I apologize for the inconvenience that you experienced during your stay while we finish up the remainder of our renovation process. We currently updated all of our elevators so that they will be more efficient as well as estheically pleasing. Thank you for your additional feedback, as I will inform our engineering department of any issues that may have arose in the past week

* Horrible service * Dirty rooms * Out of date decor in rooms * Overpriced for what you get * They ask for MANDATORY RESORT FEE when you get in !!! * Worst Continental breakfast on the continent.
I apologize for the condition that you may have found your room in. We state on our website and to all of our third party booking sites about our resort fee, which is included so we can provide great accommodations and ammenities for our guests. The price of your room entitles you to full use of our facilities, beach and pool included, as well as complimentary drinks during happy hour. Thank you for your review.

Over rated and run down. This place needs a major overhaul. Was last updated in the 70's. Rips in the carpet and furniture. Exposed wiring in the room and the hallway. I'm suprized the codes department hasn't closed this place until much needed repairs are made. Stay Away!
I apologize for the experience you encountered during your stay at the Shelborne South Beach. I will be sure to look into the exposed wiring that you saw as well as the upkeep of the furniture since this is not the standards that we hold ourselves to. Thank you for your review and this will be used as feedback to make our hotel more enjoyable for our guests.

What had become a very deteriorated old hotel is nowFantastic! A complete gutting and re-birth. An all white, sparkling in the right way lobby, terrific new restaurants, lovely, helpful […] staff. Some rooms are still only partially renovated, but even those are lovely. The hotel advertises a $20 million dollar renovaton. I arrived at noon (trying to check in a bit early) and even though had an unused room, they charged me $50 to check in early. Upon getting my room (414) i went to check it out, shower and meet friends. The elevators in the building (2) were old, worn out, no coverings and didn't work right. I got […] to my room to find an outdated room with 2 double beds, an old shower that barely worked, appliances that were from the 80's and one, the tv, from early 90's (a square box) that didn't work. Oh yeah...the lights didn't work and the air conditioner control was in a cabinet that took me 20 minutes to find and turn down the sub zero temperature. I guess there was a reason the room was on sale. It was utterly despicable for the area (Collins ave & South Beach). I am not impressed as the pictures they use to advertise are far from the reality of the hotel. Lastly, they charged way too much for valet when valet had trouble getting one thing out of my car and an exorbitant resort fee...where was the resort??? Place was a dump...you can't put lipstick on a pig and call it a princess!!! (looks like all they did is redesign two restaurants in the lobby that were never open-or at least nobody in them!!! It took 4.5 hours to get a room. Checked in at noon and told check-in was 3pm and could only get a room at noon if I paid add'l $50. Came back at 4pm and still no room available (unclear how room was available for a $50 fee at noon but no room available at 4pm). No room provided until 4:30pm and room finish looked decades old.
Our policy is if you would like to check in early it is a $50 fee, based on availability. The person you spoke with at the front desk was probably stating our policy, prior to checking if the room was available for early check in. I do apologize about the miscommunication regarding the status of your room and that it was not available at 3pm.

This is not a hotel! The rooms are individually owned like a condo and are rented as hotel rooms. Although the lobby and grounds are being renovated, it is up to individual owners to renovate their rooms. My hotel room was a disaster area with mold growing on the air vents, ancient furniture that looked like leftovers salvaged from a hurricane, broken […] windows with no curtains and a smell that could raise the dead.
