"The Historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio, TX"

Everything about this hotel is very beautiful and historic. All the antiquates and pictures all around the hotel are very interesting. We received a room facing the city with a balcony. However, once we get pass the beauty of the hotel we notice some irregularities. The room was very small. I accepted this because of age of the hotel. The hotel and my room was clean and well kept. Our bed was the most problem we had. The mattress was very uncomfortable and the bed frame was loose and made noise whenever we moved. They didn’t replace/refill any of the amenities in the bathroom. The thermometer didn’t reach the temperature we indicated. The television and the cable system is terribly out dated. No WiFi. So I couldn’t sit in the balcony with my computer. So, if you’re like me who likes to stay in your room, these things will be important to you. In the dining room, no priority was given to the guest of the hotel and the breakfast host was very rude to all the people he was greeting. The food took almost 30 minutes to arrive to our table and it was cold. This must happen often because the waiter had coupons for a free breakfast ready to hand me. I noticed that the waiter was bringing out all the food to more than one table. That would explain why my food was cold. Needless to say, this hotel is very busy and rightly so. There can be as many as 15 parties waiting to check out with you. At the very least, you would expect the hotel to ask you how was your stay; at least I expect it. But it didn’t happen. Instead all they were concern is how I was paying and the card keys. At the very most, it was not a good departing. I would recommend others to stay only because of its history. But I would mention the irregularities and let them make their choice.

I travel regularly and have stayed in a wide range of classes of hotels and I can safely say that the Menger does not live up to expectations. It's an older hotel and expected that it would probably be in need of some upgrading here and there, but this place is a pit. The only thing it has going for it is it's fantastic location. If that is all you are interested in and you don't care what it costs or how clean it is, then stay here. However, the room we stayed in had rusty fixtures, moldy and peeling bathroom caulk, dirty carpets, and worst of all - dirty sheets on the bed. My first night there, I pull back the sheets and the top sheet was filthy - it looked pressed but it had oil or something all over it. After calling down to the front desk to have someone change it, they sent a guy with a sheet to the door who was obviously not housekeeping who hesitantly offered to "try to change it" for me. Needless to say, I did it myself. The walls are paper thin and you will hear everything your neighbor is talking about - and they you. We were there for Thanksgiving and had our dinner in the dining room that evening. They had a set menu that was a little pricey, but we went ahead and ordered since there wasn't much choice. Upon returning to the room, the room service menu had the exact same thing on their menu for ten dollars cheaper - I also verified from the online menu for the restaurant. When I asked the front desk why I had to pay so much more for my meal when I could have gotten it cheaper by ordering room service, the reply was, "Because it was Thanksgiving." They hiked the prices for that day on the same food they serve every other day of the year. The hotel also charges exorbitantly for parking, so if you have to stay here look for deals that include the parking. I didn't and ended up paying an extra arm and part of a leg for the privilege. Next time I go to San Antonio, I will look at staying somewhere else. But it's an amazing location...

Spent a weekend at the Menger because it was of high standard, had history, and was perfectly located. I found these characteristics were all true: the location is excellent just by the Rivercenter mall and a stone's throw from the famous Riverwalk; the hotel staff is very friendly and service-minded, and the hotel is old. The latter means the lobby (primarily the old one, but also the new one) has historic charm and elegance. But it also means the rooms are small and the bathrooms neither spacious nor very inviting. There was nothing *wrong* with Menger - especially not their service and the Sunday buffet - but I can see how some would be disappointed in the room as to its size and amenities.

The Hotel is historic and seems to be in need of some restoration in the rooms. Rooms are very noisy all the time and elevators are very slow. Layout is confusing and rooms were far from the front desk. They automatically charge 25.00 a day for parking and that was not mentioned when I booked the room. Staff were all very helpful and friendly. Location was great once we found the hotel. Will stay at a newer hotel next time.

the menger hotel was great. i had never stayed in a hotel that was so old with such historic memories before, so it was a pleasant environment to explore and learn about the history. the location is PERFECT. the alamo is just a few steps away, the riverwalk is just a block or two away and its in the middle of lots of little shops and entertainment places (ripleys, wax museum, rivercenter mall, etc). we did not realize that this hotel is said to be "haunted" which we found out from a friend after we booked it. so we were a little nervous about possibly seeing ghosts or strange things, but nothing of the sort happened. it was a nice experience. the staff was very polite and helpful. the rooms were not as big as i thought but our view of the garden area made up for it. overall, we would stay again.

We were allowed to check in early and spent a wonderful day in San Antonio, walked across a small side street to the Alamo, which we could see from our room. We did the Riverwalk and shopped, our hotel right across the street- we really enjoyed the historic hotel, and found it to be a destination within itself- a piece of history with first class ammenities- no one came into the bar to recruit us for the Rough Riders, but that was OK since we were tired anyway after our swim in the beautiful pool and our stroll through the gardens- The hotels.com price was only a few dollars more than the hotel we checked out of as fast as we could to come over to the Menger. We'll definitely be back!! PS: parking was $25/day, valet only.

I have stayed at this hotel on at least two previous visits to San Antonio. My wife and I enjoy the city and, especially, the River Walk area. We have been regularly making the trip from the Beaumont area for over five years now. We both work in the health care industry, and so we understand the segragation of various job duties and how they can relate to the overall customer experience. Having said that, I find it objectionable that the Hotel management continues to allow the valet service workers to browbeat visitors. I have personally experienced this behavior first hand, most recently on our last trip. Previously, the manager responded appropriately by accepting responsibility and accountability for the improper behavior of the valet staff member. Unfortunately, that was not the case this time. A different manager, to be said, but still... At this time I am awaiting a response from the senior manager regarding the most recent instance, but I can assure all those who read this: I will not book another reservation at this hotel without a proper apology from management. I would also like to warn those who decide to stay at this hotel: be aware of the potential conflict that could arise when dealing with the valet service staff. Either upon check-in or in the process of checking-out. I have had bad dealings both ways.

Where to start! What a fantastic and historical stay we had. First off, the service was top notch, from Gigi the concierge, to the lady at breakfast who washed my son's sippy cups and then filled them with milk in the morning, every request was met with a smile and what else can we do for you? Every trip to San Antonio will be stayed at the Menger from now on and you will do yourself a disservice if you stay anywhere else. Its like being in time capsule when you go there. Check out the history, the pictures on the wall, the pub, Teddy Roosevelt's gear behind the glass and the miniature soldier store by the old lobby. And lets not forget the stories that come with the hotel, the ones where spirits they say still inhabit to this day. Just the intrigue itself. Gigi said that if you get a room on the north side of the hotel, by The Alamo, yes its that close, you can at times hear cannon fire and smell gunpowder at odd times throughout the night. Don't think you can get that at Motel 6 off of 35 can you? Ah the convenience of everything, the hospitality, and finally the personality of the hotel made this a trip to remember for a very long time. Thank you Menger Hotel for taking care of us on our stay.

But there's just so much that can be done in the renovation of a hotel that's as old as the Menger. I you're looking for a trip down nostalgia lane, then the Menger might be the ticket. If you're looking for something with larger rooms, newer furnishings (or chairs with varnish on the wood), broadband Internet, and a decent television, then then the Menger won't do. Yes, it's haunted with ghosts, and I felt like one of them while I stayed there.
