I was glad that we were not in the area that was being renovated so we did not have to cope with noise, dust, and smells associated with work. Our room was in the non-historic side but I sincerely hope for their sake they finish the old side and get to the "newer" side quickly. The thermostat apparently does nothing. We had to unplug a lamp to use the […] coffeemaker. There was no place to conveniently charge or comfortably use electronic devices. The desk was nice years ago but now was dented and scratched. The telephone was old. I had to ask for a notepad and pen. The bathroom had no towel racks; the towels were stored in a louvered cabinet beneath the sink. The decor in the bathroom was a mishmash of styles and colors. With a little effort on their part it could have been vintage cool but instead looked like a third rate Florida motel in the 1970s. Having said all that, the location right next door to the Alamo is fantastic and the historic parts of the hotel that you can see currently are lovely. Also, there was a big wedding but we did not hear one sound from it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
I was only in town overnight and had never stayed at the Menger, and I was curious about its history. It's a beautiful property and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. My room (4099) was nothing spectacular. The furniture was old (not antique, just old) and mismatched. The room was quite small, but I didn't mind since it was just me. Overall, […] it was clean and the bed was very, very comfortable. My "view" was non-existent. I overlooked a rooftop, and across from my window was another window in another partpartof the hotel that I'm assuming was being renovated, judging by the mattress in the hallway. Again, not a big deal on this very short trip, though it would've been annoying if I were not alone or staying longer. The bath towels were a bit rough and thin, not at all luxurious. The toiletries were good quality, though. I heard loud banging (like someone hammering something) when I checked in and again the next morning beginning around 730 am. So much for sleeping in. I did hear every person's conversation who passed through the hallway, and the children screaming across the hall. Fortunately, all was very peaceful overnight. Overall, this was am enjoyable stay. I would prefer not to stay in that room again, but would stay at the hotel again, for sure. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
I will not stay in this hotel again. The room is very small. The shower would not drain so you took a shower in ankle deep water. There was a noise in the room and when we called the front desk they didnt do anything. The shower water always goes from cold to hot. I was very disappointed in our stay. We have a two year old sna rarely get away. We were […] so excited to go to SA for a night and the hotel was bad. We talked to front desk when we left and they did nothing and barely said sorry. "San Antonio's Best!"
The merger is the best place to stay in San Antonio during the holidays. We took our 3 young grandson's and had a blast stay right in the middle of all the festivities. We love staying at the Menger Hotel.Genuine Expedia guest review
Heard stories but never thought I would experience whispers. AS we packed to leave I heard someone whispering to each other of some sort in the room I stayed in. I thought it was coming from outside and it wasn't as my fiancé heard it very close too.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Old World Charm"
Lovely hotel in a great location. Great friendly staff. Hot water could not be regulated making showers very uncomfortable. Room was cold and thermostat did not work to adjust heat.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Sauna at the Menger"
I have always stayed at the Menger because of it's location to the Alamo, Riverwalk and shopping. When we checked in initially, we were taken to a room on the 2nd floor. It was so small, we could barely walk around the bed. We changed to a room on the 3rd floor with two beds. It was a handicapped room. The first night everything was fine however, the […] second night we couldn't get any A/C. It was 51 outside but our room was stifling. I called down to the desk and I was told someone would change the switch to A/C. This worked about 10 minutes and then we got warm arm blowing in again. I called the desk again and was told the heat was on and to turn the entire thermostat to the off position. I did this however, the room never cooled down. It was so hot we could barely sleep. All we wanted to do the next morning was check out and head home! Warning if you stay in a room and it's 50 outside, the A/C in the hotel is turned off and your room if above the first floor will be like a sauna. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great place! Very historic!"
The Menger is a really nice, really historic hotel. I have really been wanting to stay there! It definitely isn't a cookie cutter hotel - it even has some antique furniture and suites! I went exploring, because the hallways go up and down and disappear! It was cool!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful historic hotel"
We chose to stay at the Menger because it has so much of San Antonio's history and we have been guest before. The beds were very comfortable and linen very clean. The bathroom smelled so badly we couldn't use it. Needs a through cleaning with bleach. The thermostat didn't work and we were to warm. I hope the hotel can work on these issues because we […] do love to visit and would gladly pay more for a comfortable clean room. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Hotel with history and great location"
Loved the hotel. I wished the room would have been nicer (3115) It is in need of renovating. Leaking faucets. No place to plug in coffee maker unless you unplug the light or tv. Would I stay here again? Yes!!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Get a renovated room or look elsewhere."
We chose this hotel because we wanted something historic. This was a mistake for us. The staff was fine but the quality of the rooms was subpar at best. Our first room was the size of a closet and was very run down. The room even had mold in the top corner. We asked for a change and got a little larger room but nearly the same conditions. The second […] night we were moved to a newly renovated room. This room was suitable for us but nothing special. I would not stay here again due to the condition of the first room. I couldn't believe the tried to pass it off as $200 a night room. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Excellent Location For San Antonio Activities"
The Menger has nice balconies overlooking the pool area. Pool was closed while we were there. The hot tub was open but area closes at 9PM. It is about a 5 minute walk from the entrance(even though there are any entrances) to the River Walk. Also right around the corner from the visitors center. We bought a 2-day package for the trolley which included […] on and off both days, entrance to the Tower Of The America's. It drops you off there. Also included a boat ride on the San Antonio River.....along the River Walk. We did this, as do most people, at night. At Christmas time the colored lights hang from all the tree everywhere. It is absolutely gorgeous!! Also the hotel is right across the street from the Alamo. That is also where you catch the carriage rides, if you want to purchase one. We did this at night and was really fun. Cost is about $25 for a 20 minute ride. Carriages are decorated beautifully for Christmas. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful and enchanting, but very small! :)"
My boyfriend and I were here to run the Rock-n-Roll 1/2 Marathon, and to my surprise get engaged right after the race!!! The room was lovely, the hotel was beautifully decorated for Christmas, and we were in a perfect spot to get to the expo, race and restaurants on the riverspot. We valeted our car and never needed to get it out. The only thing we […] didn't like was how small the room was. For $225, we received a small room with a very small double bed. The next night we stayed at the Grand Hyatt in a mini suite with a king sized bed for less than half the cost of the Menger. For a young (newly engaged) couple, we won't do it again for the cost, but it is worth it to try at least once. The hotel really is a historic and beautiful building definitely worth experiencing at least once. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"The Menger is Always our First Choice"
We have been staying at The Menger for years and its always our first choice. You cannot beat the location and the History this unique hotel captures. The only thing is the rooms could be cleaner. You could see light through our hotel room door.from the top and the bottom which was a bit annoying. The front desk staff are fantastic and are always on […] the ball. The valet parking is way way too expensive. It's $28.00 a day and all we did was park the car there. We never asked for it until we left. That really adds up in the end. We stayed 3 nights and paid $84.00 just to park our car there. That is very much a factor on rather we can stay there in the future or just try and find other parking elsewhere. "Close to all local activities"
Room was clean and comfortable. Heard it was haunted, but no indication of it. This hotel is on the ghost tour we took and had a great story. Our hotel of choice in downtown San Antonio. It is old so expect that; not a slick newbie. Has charm, beautiful lobby and patio and pool area. Colonial Room is excellent for dining. We enjoyed the atmosphere of Old at the Hotel. We could see the Alamo from our room, double decker Bus and Horse, carriage rides. "Nice, central, not for business stays"
Everything was as advertised, the historic hotel is very nice, room was nice and comfortable, location perfect. The staff was consistently extremely nice and helpful. I was, however, staying there for business, and the combination of extremely weak / non-existent wifi in the room + very few and very inconveniently located power outlets was sub-optimal […] for that, although tourists may not mind (although the outlet problem also made it impractical to use the hair dryer for example). "Great Historic Hotel"
I've stayed at the Menger a few times. It is right next door to the Alamo. They have a nice dining room where I had breakfast. My first night I had a terrible time with a smoke smell in my room and bed that gave me a headache. I did complain the next morning and although I couldn't be moved, I must compliment them for really working on the room smell. […] I think they changed everything in the room. Still, it would have been nice to offer something in exchange for the bad night. Overall, if you like something with old charm and historical interest, I would recommend it. "Old, but elegant hotel right next to the Alamo"
Being a native of San Antonio, I can remember The Menger Hotel as one of the most elegant hotels of the time. It has been a dream come true to be able to stay there. "Too much noise"
I had booked this hotel for 3 nights but I had to change hotels after the first night. I could not sleep at all with all the noises. One could hear people talking in the other rooms, the doors closing and opening and even the faucet and the toilet running. I would not recommend this hotel unless you are an excellent sleeper.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Nice 2 Star Hotel in Great Location"
Location-Location This hotel is right next to The Alamo and many other attractions. I know the hotel is over 100 years old but in my opinion the rooms of a local 2 star Motel look 10x better that the old 1970's look of the rooms in the Menger. Beds where way to soft which caused me a pain in my back for 2 days. Hotel is ok for 1-2 nights but no more. Right next to the Alamo, this hotel is a must-stay for history buffs. Rooms are clean and renovated and reasonably priced. The staff is excellent with classic Texas hospitality.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Historic Gem in the Center of the Action"
We enjoyed our stay at the Menger. If you are looking for affordable rates, history and proximity to the Alamo and River Walk, this is your spot. Those seeking high-end comforts would be happier elsewhere. Yes, the standard rooms are cozy and the furnishings are dated, but that's the point of this historic hotel built in 1859. The hotel staff was very helpful and polite. I had a unique situation which they took care without any problems. The room is another issue. Nice beds, but the walls are very thin. "Nice hotel, not very haunted though"
Nice room, wonderfully helpful staff, but I didn't see a single ghost anywhere. Most haunted hotel in Texas indeed!
