"Nice historic hotel close to the Alamo"
I had always wanted to stay in this hotel and finally did. Would stay there again. The staff were extremely helpful and the room was wonderful. I stayed in the historic part of the hotel so was taken back in time. The room had been refurbished in a wonderful compliment to the period. I plan to stay here again sometime.Genuine Expedia guest review
Nice rooms, great location, and great pricing. The staff was very helpful and respectful.Genuine Expedia guest review
"San Antonio get away"
The lobby and common areas were lovely, which would lead you to believe. that the rooms would be the same. The rooms were blah, outdated and lacked the 1800's charm that we were looking for. We requested a different room upon first look and the staff were accommodating but the other choices were just as dumpy. You need to update if you are goind tp […] charge $300 plus per night. We were very disappointed and I would not recommend. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Room is a bit small and "historic" for the price. The AC/Heater did not work too well. Restroom flushes too loud so everytime your neighbor use the restroom you can definitely hear itGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Historical hotel"
Perfect location - right across from the Alamo and within walking distance to the River Walk and all the great restaurants you could ask for. The Menger Bartenders are great! Knowledgable about the Bar/Hotel's history and about places around the neighborhood. Great historical property.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Old world, full service elegant hotel, very centrally located, I always try to stay here.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
In San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl. Walked to game, Riverwalk, and Alamo. Great location downtown. Room was a little tight but the hotel overall had a lot of character. No hassle internet.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Interesting historical information throughout hote"
We enjoyed the posting of historical guests and experiences throughout the public areas. Staff, particularly in the bar knew about much of the history. Very efficiently managed overall.Genuine Expedia guest review
We really enjoyed the hotel and the staff was very helpful and polite. The hotel was under reconstruction but you really couldn't tell. We were not inconvenienced in any way. The location was absolutely perfect. Walking distance to the River Walk and Alamo. We will definitely return.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Clean, the bed was in really bad shape (lumpy), but the staff was nice and valet was very speedy getting our car.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful... for a hotel built in 1859."
I feel bad writing this review, and it is my own fault as I should have done a little more research before booking at the Menger for our trip to the 2015 Alamo Bowl. The staff was wonderful and accommodating, the location is excellent, and the hotel is a beautifully preserved historical landmark. But as far as a hotel, it does show it's age. The rooms […] are kind of small and the bathroom was tiny. The shower head was placed pretty low, it seems that it would be awkward to use for people taller than 6' (we're short people - I'm 5' 7" and my wife is 5' 3"). The toilet, while perfectly functional, looked like a toilet from an airport or high school. It was an industrial style w/ the piping coming out of the wall w/ a lever handle (like on a urinal). The bathroom was so small that you could not sit on the toilet and open the door 90 degrees. The HVAC system would only heat up to 70 degrees. We found the beds uncomfortably soft, though admittedly we prefer firm mattresses. The highest we could set the heater was 70 degrees. Perhaps we're just spoiled and pampered, but because of this, the room was constantly cooler than we would have liked throughout our stay. Since the daytime highs when we were in San Antonio were in the 40s and 50s it would have been nice to be able to heat the room up a little warmer. Again, it is a fantastic building rich with history, but next time we're in San Antonio, we'll probably book at a more modern hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Great staff on pointGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel is beautiful and the location perfect. We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel and did not need a car for the rest of our visit. The Alamo is directly across the street - we had a lovely view from our room. The Riverwalk is also just a few steps away. Everything we needed was in walking distance. The staff at the hotel were all extremely […] pleasant and helpful. Our room was clean. If I had to find one slightly negative it would have to be the bathroom. It was small and outdated. The hotel was an attraction in itself - so much history - ghosts included! When we return to San Antonio, The Menger Hotel is the only place we will consider for our accommodations. "Lots of History, great bar, but uncomfortable room"
First time to stay at the Menger, so much history with this Hotel , I like, however, even though it was winter , the room was very warm, so much so that even the cooling system what little there was would not let the room cool down. Suffered all nite.Genuine Expedia guest review
Very nice hotel. Cleaning staff were very friendly. Busy time of year for them. We had an remodeled room and it was wonderful!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Beautiful hotel taking a walk in history but our heat did not work it was 30 degrees outside cause the hotel is so old the heat would not come on in the room so they brought us extra blanketsGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great central location, not so great room"
My husband and I stayed at The Menger during the Alamo Bowl this past week. We initially chose the hotel because of the location. It was close to the Alamo, the riverwalk and the Alamodome. The hotel only offers valet parking. Although pricey at $28.00 per day plus tax, we were in such a great location that we parked upon arrival and didn't get the […] car back out the whole stay. Definitely worth it! We stayed in the historical section of the hotel. It is over 150 years old, has some great history, and is known to be haunted. Although the room was clean, it was very run down. I expected it to be old but I guess I expected it to be restored. It definitely wasn't. It was small, old and not at all charming like I thought it would be. The heating and cooling in the room wasn't very good either. I can't speak for the newer part of the hotel, but this section wasn't worth the $200 per night price tag. The only positive was the location. And I guess I can say I stayed in a 150 year old room. The location itself would bring me back again but I would definitely stay in the newer side. Right across from the Alamo, Ripley's and Wax Museum. Short walk to AlamoDome as well. Also McDonald's, Pubs and other bars conveniently located less than a block away. Totally worth the price!!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice place close to riverwalk"
Was very friendly but the temperatures got fairly warm due to the lack of being able to run an air conditioner.Genuine Expedia guest review
Nice hotel, especially if you like the fancy old hotels. Lobby is gorgeous. Staff was friendly but gave very conflicting information about the area. Negatives are that it shows its age in the uneven floors, lack of electrical outlets and the fact that you can only have heat or ac on, if the hotel has it on. I stayed in December, room was very warm but […] because the hotel had switched their system to heat I could not cool my room down. I was offered a noisy box fan though. Plumbing is very loud, can hear the pipes moving and groaning when neighbors use bathroom. Overall a nice hotel for those that prefer the old fashioned look and feel but if you like modern convenience then this isn't the hotel for you. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Obviously the hotel is old so there are old rooms. Our bathroom had a broken drain plug and had the lift it up and down using the lever under and behind the sink. The shower head is so lowly mounted that I hit my head on it while shampooing and I'm 5'6". I did not call the hotel to book and we got a room with a splendid window veiw looking out over […] a gravel roof top. The room was really small and tight for two. The historical significance of the hotel is certainly what it's all about but the stay has very little draw. It might be better to stay at another location and just walk in to see the historical significance. Parking is way over priced and I'm glad I did not pay more than what I got it for on Expedia. "Our stay at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, Texas"
Everything about our stay at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio,Texas, was absolutely perfect. We ate in the dining hall one evening and then later, our son's wedding reception was in the Ballroom--the food on both occasions was superb. Our service was top-notch; this is a grand experience (ghosts or not) and I would highly recommend staying at the Menger […] whenever possible--it is in close proximity to the highlights of San Antonio. Spent New Year's Eve and had a wonderful time. Great historic bar, but with only two bartenders and no table service, it was quite a wait to order a beverage. Our room was small but clean and comfortable. Best location in all of San AntonioGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The Menger Hotel is a great place to stay in San Antonio if you enjoy history, beautiful architecture, walking around downtown and along the Riverwalk and vintage furniture and decor. We have stayed at The Menger many times and we always enjoy the buffet breakfast in the beautiful dining room, the old-fashioned Christmas decorations, the friendly staff […] and the historic surroundings. We highly recommend this hotel. Be sure to check out Rosario's Mexican restaurant for authentic mexican food. It is several blocks south of the convention center at 910 S. The gentleman at the desk was a little rude, but all other staff was great! Is an older hotel (1859), but well maintained with original craftsmanship. It is beautiful! Right downtown next to The Alamo and a block from the riverwalk. Will definitely go again :-)Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Four Days at the Menger Hotel over Christmas."
The Menger is a very Classic traditional hotel. My wife and I stayed from 22 Thru 26 Dec over Christmas. We did have a great time with the Menger as a base for our holiday on the Riverwalk. There were some problems, however the Staff was fantastic about resolving them very quickly. As with most older istoric hotels there are some problems that occur, […] but when the staff responds as effectively as these folks, then there is no more problem!! "Nice historic hotel located in a prime area."
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay; the only small inconvenience was not being able to set the thermostat in our room, and there was not a ceiling fan in our room.Genuine Expedia guest review
Best Location in SA perfect walking distance to everything loved this place old school, made me feel like I had gone back to simpler time ,Charming and Wonderful hotel...Genuine Expedia guest review
I was glad that we were not in the area that was being renovated so we did not have to cope with noise, dust, and smells associated with work. Our room was in the non-historic side but I sincerely hope for their sake they finish the old side and get to the "newer" side quickly. The thermostat apparently does nothing. We had to unplug a lamp to use the […] coffeemaker. There was no place to conveniently charge or comfortably use electronic devices. The desk was nice years ago but now was dented and scratched. The telephone was old. I had to ask for a notepad and pen. The bathroom had no towel racks; the towels were stored in a louvered cabinet beneath the sink. The decor in the bathroom was a mishmash of styles and colors. With a little effort on their part it could have been vintage cool but instead looked like a third rate Florida motel in the 1970s. Having said all that, the location right next door to the Alamo is fantastic and the historic parts of the hotel that you can see currently are lovely. Also, there was a big wedding but we did not hear one sound from it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
I was only in town overnight and had never stayed at the Menger, and I was curious about its history. It's a beautiful property and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. My room (4099) was nothing spectacular. The furniture was old (not antique, just old) and mismatched. The room was quite small, but I didn't mind since it was just me. Overall, […] it was clean and the bed was very, very comfortable. My "view" was non-existent. I overlooked a rooftop, and across from my window was another window in another partpartof the hotel that I'm assuming was being renovated, judging by the mattress in the hallway. Again, not a big deal on this very short trip, though it would've been annoying if I were not alone or staying longer. The bath towels were a bit rough and thin, not at all luxurious. The toiletries were good quality, though. I heard loud banging (like someone hammering something) when I checked in and again the next morning beginning around 730 am. So much for sleeping in. I did hear every person's conversation who passed through the hallway, and the children screaming across the hall. Fortunately, all was very peaceful overnight. Overall, this was am enjoyable stay. I would prefer not to stay in that room again, but would stay at the hotel again, for sure. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
I will not stay in this hotel again. The room is very small. The shower would not drain so you took a shower in ankle deep water. There was a noise in the room and when we called the front desk they didnt do anything. The shower water always goes from cold to hot. I was very disappointed in our stay. We have a two year old sna rarely get away. We were […] so excited to go to SA for a night and the hotel was bad. We talked to front desk when we left and they did nothing and barely said sorry. "San Antonio's Best!"
The merger is the best place to stay in San Antonio during the holidays. We took our 3 young grandson's and had a blast stay right in the middle of all the festivities. We love staying at the Menger Hotel.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Sauna at the Menger"
I have always stayed at the Menger because of it's location to the Alamo, Riverwalk and shopping. When we checked in initially, we were taken to a room on the 2nd floor. It was so small, we could barely walk around the bed. We changed to a room on the 3rd floor with two beds. It was a handicapped room. The first night everything was fine however, the […] second night we couldn't get any A/C. It was 51 outside but our room was stifling. I called down to the desk and I was told someone would change the switch to A/C. This worked about 10 minutes and then we got warm arm blowing in again. I called the desk again and was told the heat was on and to turn the entire thermostat to the off position. I did this however, the room never cooled down. It was so hot we could barely sleep. All we wanted to do the next morning was check out and head home! Warning if you stay in a room and it's 50 outside, the A/C in the hotel is turned off and your room if above the first floor will be like a sauna. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great place! Very historic!"
The Menger is a really nice, really historic hotel. I have really been wanting to stay there! It definitely isn't a cookie cutter hotel - it even has some antique furniture and suites! I went exploring, because the hallways go up and down and disappear! It was cool!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful historic hotel"
We chose to stay at the Menger because it has so much of San Antonio's history and we have been guest before. The beds were very comfortable and linen very clean. The bathroom smelled so badly we couldn't use it. Needs a through cleaning with bleach. The thermostat didn't work and we were to warm. I hope the hotel can work on these issues because we […] do love to visit and would gladly pay more for a comfortable clean room. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Get a renovated room or look elsewhere."
We chose this hotel because we wanted something historic. This was a mistake for us. The staff was fine but the quality of the rooms was subpar at best. Our first room was the size of a closet and was very run down. The room even had mold in the top corner. We asked for a change and got a little larger room but nearly the same conditions. The second […] night we were moved to a newly renovated room. This room was suitable for us but nothing special. I would not stay here again due to the condition of the first room. I couldn't believe the tried to pass it off as $200 a night room. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
