Overview

Location. The historic Brunelleschi Hotel in central Florence, Italy, is one block from the Duomo and within 500 metres of the Uffizi Art Gallery, Ponte Vecchio and the boutiques of Via Tornabuoni. Florence Vespucci Airport is 10 kilometres away.
Hotel Features. Formed from the Roman-era Byzantine Pagliazza tower and the medieval church of San Michele in Palchetto, the Brunelleschi Hotel's unique, historical facade contrasts with its contemporary interior. The modern lobby has a 24-hour front desk with multilingual concierge staff. The fifth-floor rooftop terrace offers close-up views of the Duomo's red-brick dome, 1 block away.

The spacious Santa Elisabetta Restaurant serves a la carte Italian dishes for lunch and dinner. The restaurant also offers a complimentary hot breakfast buffet. Private dining can be arranged in the adjoining room in the ancient tower. Cocktails and coffees are served in the Brunelleschi Hotel's modern ground-floor bar.

The hotel has four meeting rooms and a business centre. Other services include complimentary newspapers in the lobby and high-speed Internet connection (surcharge).

Guestrooms. The Brunelleschi Hotel features 96 climate-controlled rooms. The soundproofed rooms all have marble bathrooms, satellite television, minibars, safes and desks. Windows overlook the inside courtyard or a pedestrian street.

Expert Tip. The first floor of the Brunelleschi Hotel in Florence features 1920s Tiffany- style stained glass from the Royal Palace of Bangkok designed by Galileo Chini. The private museum in the basement of the hotel features original Roman baths, brickwork and floors, and Roman to Renaissance-era crockery and ceramics, much of which was discovered in an ancient well at the foot of the Pagliazza tower.

The location is perfect and having traveled extensively thru Europe on this vacation the food in the hotel was the best i had! The service from the waiter was superb! Don't waste your time trying to find somewhere else to eat.....it's simply brilliant!

The hotel is excellent and extremely well located. The room we were given (401) was extremely small and poorly decorated. The bathroom was OK. The hotel from the outside and the lobby appears much better than the room we got, so we think that we just did not get one of their better offeres. However, other guests staying there at the time had similar rooms. So there may be some rooms that are far better but not those given to those of us making reservations through Hotels.com. I recommend it because of its exquisite location and great air conditioning.

The hotel is exquisite and the service excellent. It was fascinating to discover that the building was a mediaeval tower dating from the 13th century. There is a museum in the basement that any history lover should take time to see. (You have to ask to see it, but it is well worth it.) The other secret tip is to go up onto the roof terrace to enjoy the breathtaking views of the duomo. Again, this is not signposted, but worth tracking down. Breakfast was delicious, varied and abundant. Last, but not least, we would like to mention Sergio, on reception. Whose patience, charm and good humour made our stay twice as enjoyable. We hope his employers recognise what a gem they have in him!

Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Aug 11, 2009

We were traveling in Europe (Greece, Italy, and France) for one month. This was by far the worst hotel that we stayed in. We were expecting a 4 star hotel. Instead this hotel, in its present condition, barely rates 2 stars. It has not been renovated in 20 years. We were told that 90% of the hotel will be closed in November for a much needed facelift. It will not be ready until March at which time the prices will probably reflect the cost of the makeover! We were supposedly upgraded to a "superior" room. I would hate to have seen a regular room. The paint in the room was peeling, the desk was scratched and had legs that looked as though a dog had been using it as a chew toy! The bathroom fixtures were old and worn. Overall a very depressing room. We booked the hotel because it is located in a private little courtyard but we were given a room overlooking the main street and could hear all outside noise throughout the night. All in all, a most disappointing experience. When we informed reception of our displeasure, we were assured that things would improve after March and as proof, we were shown one of the newly refurbished upgraded rooms that remained unoccupied while we were given maid's quarters! It was like adding insult to injury! Definitely a place to avoid, at least until March 2010!

Booked as a trip for myself and my mum, we were looking for comfort and location. The Brunelleschi has both. Can't fault the location, easy to nip back when your feet ache or heat is too much! Original tower is beautiful, as the many tour guides that pass it tell you. Staff were efficient and polite, but did not go 'the extra mile' That said, we had no complaints and all questions were answered. Breakfast was lovely and very civilised times-until10am,which seemed negotiable. Room was lovely, and considering the location in the heart of Florence, you couldn;t hear a thing with the windows shut. Would def return and recommend.

Arriving at the rail station, the taxi driver knew exactly the hotel as I began reading the address, stating this as one of the finest hotels in the city. Indeed when we saw the entrance we could tell we were in for a great experience. Our room looked directly out to the Duomo and the fourth floor rooftop terrace offers stunning 360• views of the whole city. Service was top notch: the friendly concierge saved us three hours of waiting in line by arranging reserved tickets to the Uffizi museum. The breakfast buffet offered all kinds of fresh fruits, juices, cheeses, breads and meats. Guided tours even stop in front of the hotel to describe the historical significance of the building itself! Highest recommendation.

Recently stayed here 4 nights on our honeymoon in Florence. This hotel has a great central location, 15 minute walk to all the major tourist spots and only 50 yards from the Duomo. We went in mid-November so there weren't any lines at the touristy hot-spots. The staff were well versed in English and we very accomodating. The rooms are great for the price, plus who needs to spend all night in a hotel room on Florence. We took the hotel's recommendation for eating at the fixed price restaurant on site; not recommended by us!!! The food was over-priced and definitely not as tasty as the street food. The hotel itself is charming, old world meets new world. Don't miss the view of the Duomo from the roof!!

If you want a really central hotel then you can't go much better than the Brunelleschi, it is a mere 2 minutes from either the Duomo or the Uffizi. The photos of the hotel look great on the web however when you get there it is a bit jaded with old bathrooms and average bedrooms. It was clean and comfortable and you would choose it for its location.

It wasn't too bad and didn't make the pillows or my clothes smell so that was good. I would still recommend this hotel if you find a good price on hotels.com.

I stayed at this hotel 15 years ago. Since then, the hotel has been completely remodeled. My single room was small (what I expected in Europe) but clean. The bathroom was HUGE and spotlessly clean. The location was great, right near the Duomo. My bedroom overlooked a major pedestrian area, so I needed to keep the windows closed at night due to the noise. I would recommend asking for a room overlooking the front of the hotel next time. The location is perfect and within walking distance to everything. I will definitely stay here again.

I stayed at the Brunelleschi Hotel in November, the rate was very low for a hotel that was very charming, comfortable and clean. Most of the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The location was outstanding - one caveat is if you plan to stay over a Saturday night/Sunday morning, be aware of partyers in the street below into the wee hours, and the bells of the Duomo going off repeatedly in the morning. Otherwise, a highly recommended hotel.

This hotel was clearly in the best location in all of Florence. It was tucked away from the busy streets but only seconds to all the main sites. The Duomo was literally next door. The views from the roof top deck were amazing. The construction of the hotel was really interesting. The old Roman tower was integrated into the rest of the hotel which made for a series of very charming rooms (resturant, bar, lounge, etc). The guest rooms were clean but not new. The bathroom was a decent size for european standards but the bedroom area was a little small. The bedroom size was managable as long as you don't like to hang out in the room and watch tv. Lots of great resturants right around the corner so we never ate in the same place twice. We're recommending this hotel to our friends traveling to Florence next year.
