Very friendly staff, great location, upgraded room was very nice. Rooms were very clean. Hotel is close to many restaurants and bars. Would definitely stay here again.

The Hawthorne Hotel was right in the middle of everything we wanted to see in Salem. All of the "must sees" and restaurants were within walking distance. The staff was so friendly, holding our luggage for us so we could drop it off early, walk around, and then check in when our room was ready. Then the next day, they held our things so we could tour […] some more. Parking is great, too. It's free for guests. While checking out, there was a couple who did not like their room, so the receptionist offered them a discount on a suite for a greatly reduced rate. We were impressed. Read more

The place was pretty old, but very well kept up. A lot of amazing sights in the hotel itself, from the structure to the furniture. The rooms were plenty big but the bathrooms were a little on the small side, but it was nice, because our room had two bathrooms. The whole hotel gave us the "haunted" feeling. From this hotel, you don't need your car. A […] walk through the whole town to all the different attractions didn't take long at all. A map was provided by the hotel, with explanation where everything was. If I am ever in Salem again, I would definitely stay here again. The hotel was really surprising for a historic building. Everything was clean, and the food served in the restaurant and tavern was very good. The Hawthorne is a grand old place. We were in a "cozy boutique" room. Yes, it's a tight squeeze but it did have everything a guest might need. Ate enjoyable meals in both of the restaurants. Wonderful staff. All in all a great stay.

I understood that the hotel was under re-construction, however my room appeared to be needing a few repairs as well. There was wallpaper peeling from the walls and the furnishings were quite worn. The staff, especially the front desk was super friendly. I miss the center seating area in the bar/lounge area. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy this hotel. Heck […] Elizabeth Montgomery stayed was there during the filming of several Bewitched episodes. If you go by the bathrooms off the lobby area in a dark corner there is a tribute to Bewitched. LIGHT IT UP! People like these things. At least allow us enough light to see and read it. Restaurant is nice, staff should not talk about other staff and personal problems while in such an elegant setting. I usually stay at B&B's in Salem, not sure if I'll stay at the Hawthorne again or just pay it my usual visit. Read more

The location is great if you want to hit all the tourist spots in Salem, however, at the time I stayed at the hotel (April '12) it was horrible. They were in the middle of remodeling some of the wings in the hotel, which I was told would not affect my room (it was right around the corner). The lobby smelled like a funeral home because of all the flowers, […] the elevator was padded and smelled like mold, the rooms were tiny as well as the bathroom, and you could hear everything going on in the hallways and surrounding rooms. My room smelled like mold and something else I could not identify. Within a half an hour of sitting in my room, my friend and I had difficulty breathing and both of us broke out in a rash. Since we are both allergic to mold, we attributed the rash to the fact that we smelled mold in the building (probably why they are remodeling). The staff was very polite and understanding and refunded our room and gave us a list of surrounding hotels so we could find another room. I was really excited to stay there because I heard it is haunted, but between the smell and the size of the room, I couldn't stay there. If you are claustrophobic, do not stay there, the rooms and beds are very small. Read more

Excellent stay. The front desk staff is exceptional. My room was clean, inspite of the construction going on in the hotel. I did eat one meal in the hotel restaurant and it was very good. The hotel is close to all the downtown attractions and restaurants (I recommend Ben's Sandwich Shop for a great breakfast). It was fun being back in Salem again.

We had a wonderful time and it was so nice that my pet was really welcomed. This is a fine hotel and more hotels should accomodate pets b/c people who have money to travel have pets and won't leave them home.

I love staying here and have stayed here before... This time we stayed for 2 days on our way to bar habor maine......we were booked for what they call a cozy room....no problem....well all i can say doesnt get anymore cozy than this...felt like i was in a broom closet.....speaking of closets guess where our shower was...yep in the closet...window faced […] the roof and loud air conditoner....after i saw that i called for a room change...none available but by the next afternoon ..they did change it....and it was beautiful... will i stay again sure..just make sure you ask where the shower is and how small is cozy Read more

Loved this hotel. The overall ambience was of old world comfort and charm. The only issue we had was the bathroom size. We realize it's an old old structure and there is not much that can be done, actually we were impressed with the use of space, but if we had been any bigger we wouldn't have fit!

This was my 5th time in Salem and my 4th at the Hawthorne and as usual it was flawless. The Hotel is always clean and the staff there is awesome. No reason to look for any other hotel while in Salem. The Hawthorne Hotel is it !

The Hawthorne Hotel in Salem is centrally located within walking distance of all the sights and near the Trolley stop. The hotel was being renovated when we stayed but it did not interfere with our stay. The staff was very friendly and professional.

Hawthorne is an excellent, older hotel. Expect a smaller room and bathroom than in modern, sprawling hotels, but it works just fine. The front desk service was excellent as was the friendliness in the Tavern. Bella Verona across the street to the east is an excellent, convenient Italian trattoria.

When we arrived we were pleased with all of the appearances of a fine historic hotel. You should understand that I generally prefer more modern accommodations, so I was wary. When we went up to our room, we were shocked at how tiny it was (and we had a lot of luggage. The bellman had a look on his face, like, "Really?"). When we went down for lunch […] in the bar (table in front of the fireplace with genuine wood logs - no gas here), I went to the front desk and inquired about an upgrade. Apologetically, they explained they could put me in a Deluxe room, but that it would cost a little more than what I had tipped the bellman more per night! It would have been worth several times that. The new room was more than twice as big, one and a half baths, seating area. We were able to spread out for the the two days we were there. If I ever go back to Salem, I would not hesitate to stay there again -as long as I can afford the Deluxe. Read more

I absolutely fell in love with Salem and the Hawthorne was a huge part of that. Though the room was tiny (nothing we didn't expect), the history and feel of the hotel was well worth it. We even had a paranormal experience--very memorable.

An older hotel that was very comfortable and convenient to the various sites of interest around Salem, Danvers and Marblehead. The food served in their restaurants was outstanding. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

This is my second stay at the Hawthorne - it is an excellent Hotel with real old world charm and super friendly and helpful staff. I would HIGHLY recommend a stay there. It may not be cheap but it is a case of paying for what you get - and with the Hawthorne you get quality.
