"Best View and Best Bed in Town!"
Reviewed by Linda of Buffalo on Dec 9, 2009
The location and the view were outstanding -- much better than the hotels we saw off the Magnificent Mile! All public transportation was in walking distance. We took a bus tour of the city that seemed to circle our hotel, we were that much in the middle of things. Our room was attractive and super comfy. I can't think of one even partial negative. Would definitely stay at Hotel 71 again.

Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Dec 1, 2009
The hotel is SUPERB in every way except the doormen seem oblivious to the guests' arrival and departure except on the day of arrival and departure. We stayed 6 days and were amazed that each time we entered and left the hotel, the doormen (both day and night shifts) were oblivious; never greeted us or made an attempt to open a door. In fact, a couple of times just looked the other way. That is except on the last day, one came over to us at the front desk to help us with our luggage. I guess he thought this was "show the money" time. I did also think that the $43 parking fee per night was excessive. On a positive note, the other staff were exceptionally polite and helpful. I particularly noticed how the front desk attendant responded to a request with a "with pleasure" instead of "no problem." I do recommend this hotel highly especially if the doormen get a crash course in "How To Be an Doorman."

While the rate was a bit on the high side, it was well worth it. The location couldn't have been better. The views of the river were incredible both at night and during the day. We have little kids and they loved the TV in the bathroom!and loved all the space available to run around and play. The hotel was close enough to all the sights we wanted to walk to as well. We even forgot a very important little teddy bear in the room and Housekeeping called us and let us know they found it!

The location of this hotel was amazing. We walked everywhere and couldn't have been happier. The doorman at the hotel was very helpful on places to go to and so was the person we spoke with at the front desk. I would definitely recommend getting the river view. I booked the river view after reading a few reviews and it was beautiful. The only thing that could have been better was that the pillows were a bit hard/uncomfortable. Other than that I have zero complaints. I would definitely stay there again and I would tell my friends to stay there.

This hotel has a great location. However, the condition of the hotel is not too nice where the room's wall is very thin and we can hear every single thing in the hallway. The door is also close very loud where we can hear any door open or close. We requested non-smoking room and when we check in, they put us in the smoking room. In the first night, we got awake by the neighbour door 5 am in the morning. Front desk people also doesn't seem to have good knowledge. They gave us wrong information about the trolley tour.

We had a corner room on the 36th floor overlooking the river with the most beautiful view. The hotel was across from the Trump Tower and across the street from one of the tour bus stops and the architectural boat tour. Do pay the little extra for a river view, it is well worth the money. We were close to the Miracle Mile, Millenium Park and the CTA. We also could walk to the Navy Pier. The staff was friendly and informative. I would stay there again.

We had a great stay here for our four-night mini-vacation in Chicago. The location can't be topped, and the river view is probably the best in all Chicago. The hotel is in convenient walking distance to many major attractions, and only 2 blocks from the EL and other connections. The room decor wasn't super fancy, but it suited us. Plenty of space, and a large desk in its own area. Two more armchairs and a small table (not the easiest for eating in the room, which we did once, but it sufficed). A few minor flaws: the security latch on the door was broke, and the water in the shower never got really hot, but it was not unpleasant. (No fan in the bathroom, so that was maybe a good thing.) The window had only shears that closed all the way, so it was a bit bright. Sounds carried fairly well, but we didn't find them all that disruptive. We had an older TV, but hardly had time to watch it anyway. The service was very helpful and prompt. The valet parking is ridiculously expensive (like all of downtown Chicago), so we avoided that by parking at Midway and taking the EL into town. The hotel stored our luggage for us at no charge in before we checked and after checkout. We would definitely stay here again if we make another visit to Chicago.

Was very impressed with hotel for location - right in the middle of loop, close to river and Michigan Avenue and all major attractions were within walking distance. Was a bit worried by some of the reviews I had read with regard to reception staff and elevators - have to say my whole party found staff to be very friendly - always a good morning or good evening when walking thru reception. They went out of their way to accomodate an unusual request from one of our party for potato peelings (long story) but was dealt with without a problem! As for the elevators, we experienced no problems - don't think 12 seonds to the 26th floor is an issue. The recent addition of a small bar to the hotel with an outdoor patio area was appreciated. The only slight improvement needed would be in the bathrooms. All in all I would recommend this hotel both for its location and size of rooms.

We got an upgraded room, which was absolutely great, both the room and the bathroom. room was very spacey and we had the King premier with River view, wow the view was so nice! You actually see the river, which is beautiful specially at night with some nice buildings. we were on 10th floor and had no problem with the elevator as I read on some reviews. So I have to say we got lucky with the whole experience. The hotel service was great, the only thing they absolutely need an improvement is to have a bar and lounge. The restaurant was pretty boring too. Sometimes when you are tired you just like to spend time in the lounge of the hotel and not worried about waiting in line. I will stay in another hotel next time, just for that reason, but I was happy with anything else.
