"nice stay before visiting volcano park"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 26, 2013
We booked 2 rooms, but the 2 rooms are not in the same building. Actually the distance between the 2 rooms is very far, more than 2 miles. Finally we (4 persons) stayed in one room. Anyway, this room at 2nd floor is very nice. The room is very large, clean.
"Nice house and grounds"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 23, 2013
The house is clean and has character. It is right outside the Volcano National Park. There are 3 restaurants and a small store nearby. Since it was rainy and around 50 degrees F when we were there, it would have been nice to have a space heater; however, there were several blankets on the beds, which made the night warm enough.
"Volcano Forest Inn was everything we needed!"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 8, 2013
A large comfortable room, a mile from the national park entrance. a tasty breakfast, and spot-on advice from our host Drew. What more could we want?

Shannon and Danny were great hosts. They treated us like family. The lodge is in a beautiful location, very isolated and lush. The room was comfortable, a bit musty, but with a homey charm. The breakfast included home made banana bread and jam. We enjoyed the hot tub and personal tour of the lava tube on site. We would certainly make a point of returning to the Aloha Lodge the next time we are in Hawaii.
"A little disappointing"
I was grateful to have found a vacancy during the high season, buut it was disappointing. The room was much smaller than expected. They were extra charges to have kids in the room with us, but the room is really too small for 4 people. There was almost no storage - no closet, the desk and bed side table dis not even have shelves. Just a small chest […] of drawers. There was free internet, but you had to sit in the lobby to access. It would be $8.95 per device per day from the room. We got an "ocean view" room, but the view was across a street to the back-waters - not what one would usually expect as ocean view. The hotel is also located very very close to the airport, in a rather run-down area. The free breakfast was quite bad, at best. Some of the staff was friendly, the others not so much. It was surprising that being in a tourist area, it had not informational brochures or help with local dining, shopping, or activities. Use this hotel only if you are on a very tight budget or have no other option for a day or two. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Impressive but budget"
An older family operated hotel but very good service and good breakfast. The room was rather small but clean. Comfortable bed. Very small bathroom, shower only, no bath (not sure if all rooms are like that though). The staff seemed very proud of the hotel being family-owned which was impressive and made you feel welcome. A very nice and well-maintained […] garden in the yard. Very friendly staff. Good for a short stay. No safe in the room. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Comfortable place to stay"
This is a family run hotel and the staff are attentive and helpful. Although it is an older hotel, the rooms are comfortable and have all the necessities. The location is convenient (easy to find from the airport), there is enough parking space and it is located close to the water. It is a great place for families.Genuine Expedia guest review
"I would stay again."
The room was clean and well kept. We were greeted very nicely at the front desk (even though we were late due to GO! Airlines which I would never recommend) My only complaint would be the truck traffic on our side of the hotel (room 3), if you got an inside room it would not be a problem. Breakfast at the onsite diner was pretty good as well. Overall […] a good place to stay at a fair price. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Charming Hilo Hotel"
This is a family owned and operated hotel. Its definately an older property but that is part of its charm. It is within a short walk of Liliuokalani Gardens which are extraordinarily beautiful. Upon check-in, the staff moved me to a more convenient room without me asking them to (I had a very large suitcase and there is no elevator, my original room […] was 2nd floor they moved me to 1st floor). The area was quiet, but I think there was a bar/ restaurant across the street. I ate in the Coconut Grill (on property) restaurant both breakfasts and dinners during my stay and was very happy with my meals (food, price and service). Banyan Drive is also beautiful. I would stay here again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Good Value in Hilo"
The Hilo Seaside Hotel is basic, but certainly fit my needs if what you're looking for is a convenient and reasonably-priced place to sleep at night, rather than a charming experience. The hotel's location couldn't be better - it's very close to the intersection of Routes 11 and 19 in Hilo, which will point you in either direction. The front-desk staff […] was extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel offers free internet in its pleasant, airy lobby. There is ample, safe parking on the street, which I greatly appreciated after paying an arm and a leg for parking in Waikiki. I'm sure that many people stay in Hilo simply because it's convenient to Volcanos Park (southwest), Puna (southeast) or the Northeast Coast. However, be sure to spend time in Downtown Hilo itself. The city is very charming, has a lot of typical Hawaiian architecture and some comfortable eating and drinking spots. There is a big farmers market downtown, as well as a delightful local market on Saturday mornings on Kino'ole Street. Absolutely be sure to eat at Ocean Sushi (Downtown - check their hours), and get some poke (marinated seafood) to go at Suisan Market - very close to the hotel, they have an amazing selection. I also enjoyed eating at Kuhio Grill, a local diner in the Prince Kuhio shopping center (don't be put off by the location), about 1/2 mile from hotel - try their lau-lau. Rooms are a bit dated but not so bad a place to stay if you are on a budget, front desk attendants were kind and friendly, small but clean pool, our room over looking the koi pond and bay was very comfortable, location is nice there is plenty of stuff within walking distance. The hotel diner though!!! Terrible!!! Poor food and horrendous customer service. […] However right across the way is a restaurant called the Ponds, I recommend any one visiting the Big Island to go there! Loved the food, the fish was so flavorful, great menu, absolutely wonderful service. The chef, not only an amazing cook but an awesome guy, made us our own personal cheesecake-heaven-on-a-spoon concoction because some one recommended we try there for cheesecake even though it wasn't on the menu. "Ok for a short budget conscious stay!"
Very basic, decor of rooms is from the 60's, but very clean. Ceiling fan and a window air condition unit, supply comfort but noise as well . The WiFi system is poor. $8.95 per day if you want WiFi in your room, and free service in the lobby, if you are into entering a lengthy code each time you use your wireless. Overall probably ok for one night. […] Would not consider this facility as a vacation getaway. They do have a nice swimming pool which is kept very clean with bright, clear water. "Bad experience, Not worth the money"
I booked a two-bed room, the room is very small and the beds are kind of twin size and not comfortable. The room has a strange smell. the bath room is clean but very tiny. so you have to be small size to turn around in the bath room. there is no coffee machine, no cell phone signal in the room, almost nothing in the room, It is noisy, especially in […] the morning, because the airplanes. It sounds like you are on the ground of the airport. They have a swimming pool, but it is closed at 7:00pm. the staff is not friendly. We asked them if we can use their micromave to heat some breakfast, because the old one in our group is not used to American food, but they just told us "no". this hotel is the most expensive one I booked during my trip in big island, and it is the worst compared to others. "not so good.."
the front desk is much better than the room itself... the room is clean but very simple and quite noisy, bathroom is small. the hotel is near the airport, you know the noises when airplanes are taking off and landing, especially in the nights... our room was very close to a pund, not sure whether it was duck, frog or fish always jumping into the water […] and it woke me up several times. customer service is so so, no Aloha when we were received.. In the evening we called for an extra towel but was told the servers have gone for the day, so my boyfriend needed to dress up again and get it himself, the thing is it was only around 8pm ... little things but not that comfortable... btw, the waffle was burned when I had the breakfast in the restaurant in the hotel The price is competitive, but not a good choice if you are looking for a quiet night Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"OLD, clean, but OLD"
The hotel was OK, though in all honesty, if you're looking for a resort rather than just a bed to crash in, this is not the place for you. It is family owned, which is nice, but that doesn't excuse never making any updates to the hotel. Looks like it is straight out of the 60's other than the new TV and lamps. It is nice as it is very clean, has a fridge, […] decent parking (at least in the off season) and easy enough to find. The Koi pond was nice. For us it was a good price, good location for the activities we had planned (though I'd just stay in Volcano in future). Breakfast was also great (which was worth paying the $10 extra for as it was delicious and convenient (despite the fact that they don't open it until 7AM and were 15 minutes late one day). It is also very LOUD. You can hear your neighbors, the people walking bay your room, the cars on the street, the super loud AC wall unit(though nice to have AC), not to mention the planes landing practically over your head, yikes! We did not rest well other than the fact that we were tired from hiking all day. So the positive is the price, breakfast and cleanliness. Everything else is worth paying $20-$30 more a night for somewhere else. I wouldn't say I'd never stay again, but the first impression almost turned me off entirely. Also, if you rely on 4g or your cell phone, it is impossible to get service in your room. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not The Greatest"

"What a surprise!"
We were vacationing on Hawaii and staying in Kona. When we planned out our trip to the volcanoes we realized that we needed to stay on the Hilo side to keep from killing ourselves so we stumbled on the Hilo Seaside. We were initially attracted to it's location and it's history. When we arrived we could not have been more delighted with the hotel. Clean, […] comfortable, and priced just right we really enjoyed our stay. Here's a hotel, built in 1956, that retains much of the original 50's charm (dating myself by not saying 'mid-century modern') while updating those things that are important to have modern, like the TV, the carpet, the bed. The staff could not have been any nicer and we really enjoyed the complimentary breakfast (hint: go for the 'local' special, not the 'healthy' one). We will be back to the big island and when we do we will certainly be back to the Hilo Seaside. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"I need to wash my hair!"
It's very old Hawaii style. Nothing fancy at all. The parking is a bit of a problem when you come back at night. I thought the staff was friendly at the front desk. The room was clean although very outdated, such as blue shag carpet. I did however have a few of my essentials stolen when my room was cleaned. One item was an expensive shampoo. I went […] to wash my hair and it was gone. If I could give any advice, especially considering the dire straits of the economy on this island, I would put up your do not disturb sign and catch the maids for clean towels. By the way.....that day I had left her a $5 tip and said, "Have a nice day!" and then could not wash my hair! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

The rooms have the essentials without the bells are whistles. Personally I prefer firm beds and these were too squishy for my tastes. The food at the Coconut grill downstairs was very good! The worse thing was that I booked a room with one king bed but got a room with 2 double beds. "Nice to stay at a hotel that cares!"
From the ladies at the front desk to the servers at the connecting restaurant for breakfast, everyone who works here is so incredibly kind and customer service oriented! We were so impressed that for such a retro hotel, they have done a fantastic job keeping it clean and inviting. Back to the service, the front desk was so accommodating when we requested […] a few extra pillows. They were handed over nice and clean and with a smile. We also had a little clog in the toilet (totally our fault) and a friendly plumber arrived within minutes of us telling them. Even the maintenance people walking around the hotel had smiles and greeted us! The breakfast here was definitely substantial. We had three different meal options and whatever we picked, the portions were very generous and good. We highly recommend this quaint hotel.
