2 of the 3 rooms had the commodes to close to the wall so for a person of any size it was almost impossible to use and they were low to the ground so if you are tall it was a little ackward.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The bathroom in the "old" section just need a little fine tuning...commodes in 2 out of 3 rooms we rented were situation to close to the wall and to low to the floor.....not made for "today's" traveler who is taller and wider....but other than that everything was terrific!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Only in Tri state area"
Only in the trip state area do we pay for accommodations so dilapidated. I get it, it's a landmark of some historical significance. And to be fair, the bar downstairs was hopping. But the gym was literally a walk in closet, the room not much bigger. Both fine, but for the almost $300 price? So embarassing what our money goes towards when you get close […] to NYC. If you need a comfortable bed in the area, and not much else, and money is not a problem, then this hotel is for you... Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best breakfast buffet ever!"
Comfortable, old world surroundings in this historic hotel. Room was clean and comfortable, if a little small. The restaurant, Hat Tavern, served excellently prepared burgers and fries and their breakfast buffet was the best I have had in years. Food was beautifully presented and perfectly prepared. I will definitely go back.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Location is good"
The air conditioner was making too much noise. Can't turn off - it is hot.Genuine Expedia guest review
The room I was in was large but the beds were very uncomfortable, the pillows were hard and thick and I could hear people walking in the hallway.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice old hotel, charming"
Not your usual hotel. This place was built in 1800s. Very nice spacious room! Breakfast buffet was great!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Don't be fooled by the name"
This hotel was formerly the Summit Suburban Hotel. It is the last vestige of an era when Summit was accessible by train as a vacation getaway for wealthy New Yorkers and several large hotels graced its maple tree lined streets (1890's). Sadly despite valiant efforts to rebrand it as a classic old venue, the name implies the elegance of a bygone era […] but fails to deliver on the same. Rooms and elevators are small and although maintained appear a little shabby. Our room and hallway smelled musty and the bathroom was small and contained only a shower with no tub. The very faint odor of cigarette smoke was also detectable in certain common areas of the hotel. Rooms lacked modern electronics hookups as well as refrigerators and microwaves. Far too few electrical wall receptacles for modern traveler's needs. Business center was adequate. Being the only hotel in Summit proper has enabled them to operate without having to upgrade and offer amenities that are standard at comparable properties. They charge guests a nightly $9.95 fee to park in their lot. Parking is typically included at other venues in the area. Overall not worth the rates they charge. If they would substantially invest in upgrading and modernizing the property this would be a very nice place. I feel they are gouging because of their monopoly in posh Summit. Older hotel with smallish rooms. Clean & comfortable but needs updating. No fridge or microwave. A pretty good included breakfast. Great location: walk to town & train. Lots of activity in meeting rooms such as weddings etc.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Old-style hotel, a bit dated but still charming"
Old-style hotel, a bit dated but still charming. Very quiet rooms; lovely traditional lobby; rooms are spacious and welcoming; generous buffet breakfast. In-house tavern is pretty awful -- bring your own snacks.Genuine Expedia guest review
This hotel was probably beautiful in its day but it is very tired and needs some serious updatingGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Only hotel in town"
Reason we stayed was that it was close to where we wanted to be. The room was comfortable and the staff in the restaurant were very nice. Good breakfast buffet and excellent lunch. On our last day the TV cable in our room was not working. It didn't get fixed before we left. It was a nice hotel but over-priced.Genuine Expedia guest review
We stayed for one night. The rooms are very small. The hot water in the bathroom took a while to become hot. In the early hours of the morning we realized that the sink in the bathroom was leaking. We did not bother to complain as we were leaving in a few hours but had to put a few towels on the bathroom floor. We requested a refrigerator in the room […] as I had a baby and needed to store some baby food. It was an additional $20 and so was parking ($10). The front desk staff was courteous though. It is an old building and the ambience in the lobby was very appropriate. The breakfast was good. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The hotel is a lovely old hotel, but well-maintained and obviously refurbished. The bed was very comfortable as were all the pillows; plenty of amenities, very, very pleasant staff and perfectly clean.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great location to downtown Summit"
This hotel was in a great location to downtown Summit. Just a short was to great restaurants! The neighborhood is very friendly and clean. The hotel had lots of character and charm. I would definitely stay there again in future visits to the area.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient to downtown Summit"
The hotel was fine, but there were a few little maintenance things that I found annoying. The door hardware (keycard access) is old, and without the "arrow" indicating where the stripe should be when inserting your card, it can take a couple times before you get the green light. A subtle annoyance. An electrical plug cover plate in my room wasn't secured […] fully in the wall. Window screen was ripped. Little things that showed some maintenance neglect. But it was fine. I guess I expected a little more for the money. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Third Party Reservations"
I booked my reservation on Hotels.com. When I arrived I was given a room with a double bed overlooking the air conditioners and back side of the hotel. I called the desk to see if this was the only room they had available, could I get a King? They stated that all the rooms on Hotels.com were Queen/Double. I distinctly get the impression they give the […] third party reservations to their least desirable rooms. They did end up moving me to a King with a $20 up charge and my room was STILL in the far far back of the hotel. I do not think they understand the value of third party sites brining revenue to their hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Should have been better"
I had a room on the lower level. Not as nice as rooms that I have stayed in upstairs. Very drafty and the TV reception was terrible. Also very noisy since you could hear everything on the floor above. WiFi and cell phone service do not work well in this hotel.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice place less than helpful staff"
The hotel itself was ok. The beds weren't very comfortable and the rooms were small...especially the bathrooms! The restaurant was the best feature. The breakfast and food was good. The conceriege staff was horrible and un-informed. We had 4 different people during our stay and none could answer general questions.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful historic hotel"
This is a beautiful hotel with a gorgeous lobby and cozy fireplace to enjoy. The room was clean and bathroom updated, only cons were the lack of outlets in the room and the smaller size, neither of which made a difference to the stay. The staff was friendly and helpful, lots of great place to go in the town and their own tavern/restaurant was charming […] as well. We would definitely stay here again. Enjoy! "A nice facade hiding a dump"
So dated, with budget-motel style decor, and a need for renovation. The nicest thing was the bathtub/shower, with good hot water and pressure. But the long hair that wasn't mine or my bald husband's in the bathroom did not give me confidence in the cleanliness. A lumpy mattress left me with a backache in the morning, and the $9 parking fee seemed so […] unnecessary - we were in the suburbs, after all. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Went to my high school reunion"
Always a very nice place to stay. We love the complimentary breakfast in the morning and the availability of Starbucks coffee & tea in the lobby 24/7. I would very much like to see a hot tub be put in on the premises since I have a bad back and none is available at the local YMCA that you do get free access too being a hotel guest.Genuine Expedia guest review
we've been here before and been thrilled. Unfortunately this time we were given a room that was not in the main building. Key did not work and it was a long walk back...then there was a party in the hall for hours in the middle of the night. I would be happy to recommend GS hotel, but be SURE to ask for main building!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Reasonable cost, small rooms"
Nice place with nice service in need of a renovation. Service was good, parking--in a lot--costs extra. My room was very, very small, but the bathroom was nice. Breakfast is a cattle call downstairs.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Decent Place to Stay in Outstanding Location"
I was hesitant to stay here because of the ratings listed by other travelers on the Hotels.com website. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it is an old building, but it is gorgeous. The furniture in the room is old, but the carpet was new and clean, as was the rest of the room. The bathroom was updated. No feather pillows, however. Breakfast […] was fair, but certainly better than most free breakfasts at other hotels. All in all, not bad, and worth it for the great location. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
All we had were a couple of coffee paper cups. Should be real glasses for water. Room smelled a bit...musty when we arrived. Should be hooks for towels and clothes in the bathroom. The bathroom was so small I had to pile stuff on back of toilet. No counter space or hooks.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A Very Grand Hotel"
There are not many "Grand" hotels you can find in the myriads of Villages in New Jersey that are within walking distances to Manhattan, NY (via train of course). This hotel offers EVERYTHING. First of all, it is in Summit, New Jersey, which has a quaint train station (a few blocks away) that takes you directly to Penn Station in NYC within an hour. […] The Grand Summit Hotel was very impressive to me. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"good room, poor breakfast"
Hotel room was good, although a bit small compared to Best Western Newark Liberty, where we stayed the previous 3 days - because it was more convenient to go to NY from there. We were going to stay at the Grand Summit the 4 days, but there was no early check-in, they would charge an entire stay, then we decided to go first to Best Western, which charged […] us only US$25 for early check-in including breakfast for two! Summit is a beautiful town and trains are frequent and excelent to NY but Best Western would take us free to Newark Penn Station from which NY is only 10 minutes away compared to 30-40 minutes from Summit. The big frustration from our one day stay at the Grand Summit was the breakfast, which we thought would be excelent, but came out to be very poor, the breakfast lounge needs urgent remodelling, our table was plain, no towels, no coffe service available, bread was cold and tasted like yesterday´s bread, few types of cereal (raisin bran not available). At the end, The Grand Summit cost us twice as much Best Western, and Best Western had much more to offer, although the hotel was in a neighborhood of highway junctions, with nothing to be seem or explored. Certainly Summit is a much nicer place but our interest was NY so there was not much importance for us the neighborhood since we would go everyday straight to Newark Penn Station by van. "Feels like coming home"
This hotel holds our Organization's number 1 spot when it comes to staying during travel to Summit. You just can't go wrong with the Grand Summit Hotel. "Warm Traditional Hotel with History"
Grand Summit may be around a hundred years now, but great accommodations, service, and restaurant never get old. The Hat Tavern is cozy and old-school, but plenty of Directv to keep up on sports. "Forgotten in Time..."
While there is something to say about staying in an historic hotel, modern conveniences are something that I have come to expect when travelling in the US. The Grand Summit has not quite kept pace with those expectations. From not stocking a soda machine in the six days we were there to having only one electrical outlet in the room (with a power strip), […] I was not impressed. Most of the time the hallways smelled like cigarette smoke, and the walls were paper-thin (it's old, so I excused that). Beds are small, and pillows hard. I did enjoy the Hat Tavern menu, and the free (FULL) breakfast served every day, as well as the complimentary coffee and tea bar in the lobby- welcome on a dreary New Jersey October day. It's not likely that I will stay here again, nor recommend to any of my friends or family. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Hotel and Staff"
This quaint hotel has plenty of character, the staff was fantastic, the breakfast was outstanding, clean quiet and beautiful. Lots of amenities you don't find in the chains.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Hotel is located close to the center of Summit and convenient to all areas including NY. The only downfall is that because this hotel is soooooo old, some of the rooms have an Oder problem, smelled like stinky feet, so you need to keep the air conditioner going full bast to keep the smell at a reasonable level. Cold room makes for cold people. We had […] 1 room changed but another couldn't be because the hotel was full. Overall we had a great time and would come back. "this place needs help"
This place needs some serious updating, for the price they are charging. And, they charge ~$10/night for parking. I give it 2 stars because it is old and historic. The small and poorly designed rooms, along with old windows (some with and some without screens), are par for the course... I guess. If this place were built in the last 30 years, it would […] have gotten one star. Sheets were clean, pillows were OK, but man were the towels scratchy. To quote from a yelp review: The Grand Summit is a strange combination of "not quite there", "terrible" ,"not so bad", "pretty good" and "nice". As a grand luxury hotel with echos of times gone by, Grand Summit is not quite there. Yes, they have the beautiful old building, the wood, the gilt, the heavy double doors. All the trappings of a great hotel. But it's all trappings. The service and care that came with the Great Gatsby era is completely missing. Certainly not up to the standards of other "grande dame" hotels I have stayed at in New Work City and Boston. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Going to the Grand Summit is like going back in time. You can just imagine the elite New Yorkers from the early 1900's being there for a weekend getaway. The rooms are so beautiful. Great location for our needs on this trip. The night clerk was not helpful, either did not know or unwilling to answer questions. Food was good. "Walking distance to shopping and restaurants."
This was my second stay at this great little find. We loved it the first time we stayed there and it was even better the second time around. Nice quiet neighborhood--a couple of blocks to the small downtown with wonderful little shops and lots of restuarants. Didn't eat there this time (had family obligations) but the hotel restaurant had great food […] the last time we were there (Jan 2013). Rooms are older but new beds and very clean. "Great location in Summit"
The hotel was convenient to downtown Summit in a quiet neighborhood. The hotel is quite old which gives it a certain charm, but it could use some updating. Doors stuck when opening and closing them. It was nice to actually be able to open the windows for fresh air instead of having to run the in room a/c unit which was loud.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very nice older property"
Hotel and staff very nice, elevators could have been a bit cleaner walls were a bit diry but nothing too bad. The $10 charge for parking was I thought out of line based on the nightly cost of the room. I would however stay there again if needed.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Worst hotel experience ever"
This hotel caters to a mainly business repeat visitor clientele, so perhaps they had no interest in providing me a good experience. It did not appear to be very full; few cars in the lot, so no excuses for the treatment I was given. The first room I was given had a damp musty feel and odor, so I asked nicely for a replacement room. The desk clerk challenged […] my request--asking what I meant by musty and what was wrong with the room. I told him it had a bad odor and I could not stay in it, and that he should check it out. He was pretty rude, and clearly not the least bit interested in hearing my concern. The next room I was given had a clean but slightly shabby appearance; it was on a lower level of the building and far away from he main lobby area, had wood floors instead of carpet. I dropped my bags and went out for something to eat, as I was tired from a long drive in. I noticed later that the bed linens were worn and not very neat in appearance, beds were sloppily made up, especially the bed skirts. This room was in the lower level with a view to fence about a foot away from the window. It too ended up having a very damp and musty feel--I thought it might be coming through the air conditioner so I turned it off, but the odor lingered. Two of the lamps were not working but I was pretty tired and turned in soon after I got back from dinner. The rates were not cheap; it was by far the very worst hotel experience I have ever had--both the room, the unhelpful desk clerk Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"So so ..."
We have stayed here a number of times as it is very convenient to our kids and grandkids in Summit - no space at their inn. That is the only reason we stay. The hotel needs a serious update. The magnetic strip on the key card consistently fails resulting in repeat trips to the front desk. Happened twice this time. Door handle was defective creating […] possibility of door not secure. Reported to front desk. Breakfast with room rate is a good deal, and actually good. It's OK but not exceptional by any stretch. We'll stay again because its convenient. But we know what to expect. I love this hotel! Friendly staff, wonderful service and very clean rooms. Nicely updated baths with all the amenities. Hat Bar has a beautiful patio, a great spot for a cocktail on a summer evening.
