"Location, location, location"
If you're looking to check out the upper westside of Manhattan, the Empire Hotel could not be in a better location. We parked in the Lincoln Center parking (across the street), had dinner at Rosa Mexicana (around the corner and down about 100 feet), had breakfast at The Smith (across the street) and walked up to the Museum of Natural History just to […] get some exercise. The hotel itself was clean, comfortable and thankfully quiet with a very nice rooftop space. My only complaint was the price gauging on a bottle of water - $7.50 for 8 ounces! The elevators in this hotel are horrible. have stayed at this property several times and they have always been a nightmare. I would not recommend for more than 1 nights stayGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Overall it was very nice, however the amenities were lacking. Disappointed about the roof top closure, the showers were awkward, we requested ice and it took over an hour for them to bring it, the air conditioning did not work. "Mediocre stay with a great location"
The location is great but I will not stay there again. The room is shabby. Our first room was on the 11th floor and we could not sleep due to the noise from the trendy club on the 12th floor. We asked to be moved and were told there were no available rooms. They did move us the next day. Also, they charge $3 per cup for coffee in the room. This seemed […] odd to us since coffee in the room typically is complimentary. There are many better places in NY. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Stayed here 1 night with my boyfriend. We are from the area but spent the money so we could enjoy the rooftop (it WAS my favorite) without having to worry about cabs, trains etc. I check in and find out its closed for a wedding. They said they didn’t disclose that because the rooftop doesn’t coordinate with the hotel. Weddings are booked months in advance, […] there’s no way they didn’t know. The people at the front desk are not friendly or accommodating. Then we get back from dinner and the room smells musky and AC isn’t working. We call the front desk and they send someone to check it out, we see him remove the filter that is so disgusting, completely black. He replaced the filter and then it worked fine. 2 of the elevators were down so there was always a line to get on the elevator. Just the whole set up was unorganized, no communication and the employees had no passion for the hotel or for the guests. Unless you are spending money to have a wedding there etc. they don’t care about you, we even told them we planned on having friends meet us at the roof and buy a table, there attitude was “oh well.” When we checked out the front desk didn’t even ask if we enjoyed our stay or apologize for the AC issue. I will never stay here again it should be a 2star hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I did not like the hotel at all. My guest room and the property in general were dark and antiquated. The hotel clerk was rude to me when he checked me in and subsequently put me in a tiny room directly across the hallway from the elevator that faced a wall. I stayed for a few hours and left, there was no way I would ever spend the night there.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Close to Lincoln Center"
The hotel room was small, but I guess average by NY standards. No tub, only shower. I had a cold shower 2 of the 6 days. No ice/vending on the floors - have to go down to bar to get ice every night. They charge for EVERYTHING! I was so happy when we first arrived as they had a Keurig in the room - but then saw the sign, it was $3 for a k-cup of coffee […] in your room!!! Wi-Fi was out for a night and I was told they have nothing to do with the wi-fi and no control over it, yet they are the one's who charge for it??? Manager was supposed to call me but never received his/her call. On the plus side, the location was perfect for us as we were moving our daughter into The Juilliard School - there is not a hotel closer so the convenience of this outweighed all the negatives...for us. "A Hotel lacking in amenities and common courtesies"
Empire Hotel has to be one of the most penny-pinching places in New York City. It was ridiculous to have to pay not only for wi-fi during our stay, but even the coffee in the room cost $3 a cup for a Keurig cup. My advice? Save some real money and try the W downtown for the same price. They have a better idea of how to take care of their guests than […] the Empire Hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Though the lobby decor leans towards dictator chic, and the roof-top pool is less than Olympic size, and the last room we had was also rather petite, there really is no better hotel on the Upper West Side. We enjoyed the small, but inviting roof top pool and lovely rooftop deck as an escape. Room was tight for four, but nicely decorated as was the lobby. We stayed one night at this hotel. Over experience was very disappointing. Room was very small and dark, felt like I was in a cave. “The spa-inspired bathroom featuring a tropical rain showerhead” – is a joke, the “tropical rain showerhead, did not work. We checked in at 2 (the allowed us an early check-in) we went up checked the pool area, was told that it would be open till 9pm. Went out came back around 7. Pool area was closed. Called the reception, was told that they closed the pool area because the guest were uncomfortable, because it was too cold. I can understand the pool/ lounge area being closed because of bad weather, but on the 11 or 10th floor the rooftop lounge was open (this was open to the public) We decided to give it a try but almost every table was reserved. The only good thing about the hotel was the location, close to Central Park and Lincoln Center. We went hoping for luxury stay but ending up with a stay that was mediocre. "One night stay"
This hotel is probably not worth the amount you pay per night. By far the nicest aspect was the rooftop lounge/pool. Our room was alright but not very clean. We had a view of the air conditioning system. There was still hair in the shower drain and the sink in the bathroom didn't drain well. The room needed minor updates since some things look like […] it had fallen apart. Plus, it's really annoying to see every little thing in your room with a price tag on it. A bottle of water cost $7.50...if you went down to Duane Reade next door and got the same bottle of water, it cost $2.00. I'd rather see the room void of snacks and drinks than see all of those with prices that are triple what they cost in the store below your feet. All that being said, this hotel was booked last minute after we had to change plans due to the amount of people with us. I won't stay here again, but I may come back to party in the rooftop to get that view. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

First off Chris the concierge is SUPER helpful , friendly and professional. The rooms are nice , bathroom is small, we had our kids with us, so it felt even smaller, but typical for NY standards. The Splash breakfast is only for 2 adults, so it didn't include our kids, which I never saw while making the reservation. The pool is TINY!! It looks much […] bigger in the pictures, I would say it is 3 feet wide by 15 feet long. They never had towels and the one I did get was stained. "Would not reccommend"
Our stay at the Empire Hotel was terrible. This hotel advertises a rooftop terrace, which was a big factor when deciding on hotels. Don't expect to see much of the night skies of the city. They close it down at 9:00pm. Really? In NYC? Big disappointment. I had to call for housekeeping at 11 pm in order to get top sheets for our beds. There is a comforter […] and a bottom sheet that's it. Typically hotels have a bottom sheet, top sheet, light blanket and duvet. This to me was a turn off to say the least. I also addressed to the man who brought our linen; who by the way was not from housekeeping, that our shower was also leaking and it was turned off. He attempted to turn it off and stated he would let someone know about it. I mentioned I would like to have a manager aware of our concerns. We slept with the bathroom door closed because the leaking in the shower was so loud. At 1:15 AM there was a knock at the door. They wanted to fix the leak! We are sleeping and you just woke us up! The next morning we attempted to get a few things from the picked over continental breakfast. We were informed as we were putting bagels in the toaster and pouring coffee that there is a $15 charge per person. Are you kidding me? We promptly put it back. We proceeded back to our rooms to gather our stuff and check out. I addressed my concerns at the desk while checking out. Again I told them I would like to speak with manager. They took my email down and have not heard from them since. So you ask how this visit was? I would never reccommend it. For the cost, definitely not. Btw we went to Starbucks when we left which was around the corner and spent $20 for 3 people and had great coffee and breakfast sandwiches! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great hotel, Amazing location!"
Hotel was great, the room was small but its NYC, so we were expecting it. Clean, good service. Safe neighborhood, close to everything. Will definetly stay there again. Only minor setback was the pool, its essentially a bathtub, so dont expect to swim laps, prepare to take a dip to cool off while tanning.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I found the online representation to be inconsistent with the actual experience. The marketing personnel did a very good job of photographing the room to present a feeling of space that I did not experience. The swimming pool is humorous. One guest described it as three tubs stuck together. The hotel does describe it as a plunge pool. The breakfast […] buffet was a little bit of an adventure to find due to weather and misdirection by staff on two occasions. The concerns above would be okay if taking a shower did not result in flooding of the bathroom due to a missing shower door. We reported the door and were told, yes we know. A second experience unacceptable to me was the behavior of front desk staff. I waited patiently on more than one occasion as they finished their obviously enjoyable discussion with fellow employees only to receive a cold reception and clipped response to my simple questions. My stay at this property was a disappointment. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Potential - but needs work"
The hotel itself if very nice. Fab decor, great/friendly workers, perfect location to the abc studios and ballet. The upgraded room we got was a decent size for NYC and very nice/comfy - however on one of the hottest days the AC didn't work. Really? The unit itself looked like it was from 1965. The bathroom was literally smaller than my suburb broom […] closet - no joke - but it functioned. The icing on the cake was the elevators didn't work. Again, really?? The Out of Order signs were also old, indicating that this happens a lot as signs are reused. We were on the 11th floor - walking up and down was NOT OK. "High charges per day for wifi?? Really??"
I was very disappointed in the Empire overall. The rooms were tiny. Half of the bureau was taken up with items to purchase for exorbitant prices... $$ (use your imagination) for a bottle of water and apparently several hundred dollars for a bottle of whiskey! That is quite a markup! The bathroom was also tiny and the shower door only went halfway across […] so every time someone took a shower, everything got soaked. This is probably why the door looked like it might be rotting away at the bottom. The elevators were slow and two of them were actually out of service for much of our stay. Room service, had we chosen to use it, included not only a straight charge (understandable) but a mandatory 20% gratuity. There was no ice machine... one had to order that from room service which closed at 10PM. The pool on the roof mirrored the room size... it was so small that even a couple kids made it look crowded. There was also supposed to be free wifi on the roof deck but the only employee up there knew nothing about an access code. I can't complain about the location which was close to the Park and the subways. I wasn't in love with the fact that there was a club on the roof so at night, there were bouncers who demanded to see my daughter's room key before he let her into the hotel. "Is This a Spa Hotel"
We have stayed at the Empire for the past 5 summers because we love the location and the rooftop deck. This time we were here for 9 days. Our air conditioning was not operational much of the time and for the last 6 days, the elevators have not been operating correctly causing us to have to use the stairs. We did complain to the manager finally yesterday. […] He apologized but offered no solution to the problems. The location of the hotel is wonderful however I experienced some issues with the hotel itself. A/C unit in the room was noisy and barely worked, the hallways were also not well ventilated. I used the fitness center which had an odd smell, two of the elevators were out of order and there was an insane price for items in the room (small bottle of water […] $7.50! Coffee Pod $3.50!) that most hotels provide at no charge. I asked front desk to extend my check out by 1 hour and was told that they were completely booked however when I looked online (both at hotels.com and hotel's own website) there were plenty of rooms in my category open. "The worst hotel experience I have had in a while"
This was the worst hotel experience I have had in a long time. I have learned to rely on reviews to make hotel selections and this hotel had pretty good reviews as well as the location for NYC. Now, when you go to NYC, you cannot expect a huge room, but if you pay more than $300/night, you expect good customer service, cleanliness and the room to be […] nice with everything working. This hotel not only didn't give me a room that had a working A/C but you could not get anyone on the phone downstairs to talk to. The phone kept going to voicemail and even if you leave a message, no one returned your calls. I'm sorry-- a 4 star hotel doesn't do that. So after I spent one night with no a/c, I went downstairs and they told me they will move me later on the day. Then they gave me another room but a/c wasn't working again. And when I complained that this is annoying that they cannot give me a room that is functional and I'm wasting my time moving, the concierge had the nerve to tell me that I'm making it up. The third room was fine in my 2 day stay in NYC. This hotel has an awesome location: you are right next to Lincoln center and Central Park, but that's all they have going for them. It's not worth $300/ night and it's definitely less then 2 star rating. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
