"Good deal. Small rooms"
Second time there. Don't take room in 02 line or near roof. Small and noisy. Overall pretty nice. Great locationGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Had heard that this would be a great place to stay, but we were very disappointed. "A Classic Stay in the Upper West Side"
Smack in front of the Lincoln Center, the Empire is a fixture place on the Upper West Side. With it's custom decor and rooftop bar, it remains a pretty cool place to stay. "Would not reccommend"
Our stay at the Empire Hotel was terrible. This hotel advertises a rooftop terrace, which was a big factor when deciding on hotels. Don't expect to see much of the night skies of the city. They close it down at 9:00pm. Really? In NYC? Big disappointment. I had to call for housekeeping at 11 pm in order to get top sheets for our beds. There is a comforter […] and a bottom sheet that's it. Typically hotels have a bottom sheet, top sheet, light blanket and duvet. This to me was a turn off to say the least. I also addressed to the man who brought our linen; who by the way was not from housekeeping, that our shower was also leaking and it was turned off. He attempted to turn it off and stated he would let someone know about it. I mentioned I would like to have a manager aware of our concerns. We slept with the bathroom door closed because the leaking in the shower was so loud. At 1:15 AM there was a knock at the door. They wanted to fix the leak! We are sleeping and you just woke us up! The next morning we attempted to get a few things from the picked over continental breakfast. We were informed as we were putting bagels in the toaster and pouring coffee that there is a $15 charge per person. Are you kidding me? We promptly put it back. We proceeded back to our rooms to gather our stuff and check out. I addressed my concerns at the desk while checking out. Again I told them I would like to speak with manager. They took my email down and have not heard from them since. So you ask how this visit was? I would never reccommend it. For the cost, definitely not. Btw we went to Starbucks when we left which was around the corner and spent $20 for 3 people and had great coffee and breakfast sandwiches! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great hotel, Amazing location!"
Hotel was great, the room was small but its NYC, so we were expecting it. Clean, good service. Safe neighborhood, close to everything. Will definetly stay there again. Only minor setback was the pool, its essentially a bathtub, so dont expect to swim laps, prepare to take a dip to cool off while tanning.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I found the online representation to be inconsistent with the actual experience. The marketing personnel did a very good job of photographing the room to present a feeling of space that I did not experience. The swimming pool is humorous. One guest described it as three tubs stuck together. The hotel does describe it as a plunge pool. The breakfast […] buffet was a little bit of an adventure to find due to weather and misdirection by staff on two occasions. The concerns above would be okay if taking a shower did not result in flooding of the bathroom due to a missing shower door. We reported the door and were told, yes we know. A second experience unacceptable to me was the behavior of front desk staff. I waited patiently on more than one occasion as they finished their obviously enjoyable discussion with fellow employees only to receive a cold reception and clipped response to my simple questions. My stay at this property was a disappointment. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Potential - but needs work"
The hotel itself if very nice. Fab decor, great/friendly workers, perfect location to the abc studios and ballet. The upgraded room we got was a decent size for NYC and very nice/comfy - however on one of the hottest days the AC didn't work. Really? The unit itself looked like it was from 1965. The bathroom was literally smaller than my suburb broom […] closet - no joke - but it functioned. The icing on the cake was the elevators didn't work. Again, really?? The Out of Order signs were also old, indicating that this happens a lot as signs are reused. We were on the 11th floor - walking up and down was NOT OK. Overall, it was a shame bc it had potential, but some things need work. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
WE HAVE STAYED AT THIS HOTEL BEFORE AND IT USED TO BE OUR FAVORITE IN NYC. IT HAS GONE DOWN HILL!!!! FOR THE MONEY THEY CHARGE IT WAS HORRIBLE. DIRTY ROOM, BARLEY ANY A/C. "High charges per day for wifi?? Really??"
I was very disappointed in the Empire overall. The rooms were tiny. Half of the bureau was taken up with items to purchase for exorbitant prices... $$ (use your imagination) for a bottle of water and apparently several hundred dollars for a bottle of whiskey! That is quite a markup! The bathroom was also tiny and the shower door only went halfway across […] so every time someone took a shower, everything got soaked. This is probably why the door looked like it might be rotting away at the bottom. The elevators were slow and two of them were actually out of service for much of our stay. Room service, had we chosen to use it, included not only a straight charge (understandable) but a mandatory 20% gratuity. There was no ice machine... one had to order that from room service which closed at 10PM. The pool on the roof mirrored the room size... it was so small that even a couple kids made it look crowded. There was also supposed to be free wifi on the roof deck but the only employee up there knew nothing about an access code. I can't complain about the location which was close to the Park and the subways. I wasn't in love with the fact that there was a club on the roof so at night, there were bouncers who demanded to see my daughter's room key before he let her into the hotel. "The Bad and the Good"
The first room, supposedly a Superior King, was small and the bath was ridiculously small. The AC was weak, but we went out to dinner and returned, hoping it would be cooler. It wasn't. I called the desk, they sent up an engineer, who said it was as good as it gets. He recommended we be moved. The Night Manager showed us another room, handicapped, but […] cool. We went to pack and then he called to say he was moving us to a suite since it was late and we had been inconvenienced. The new room was very comfortable. The bath was still small, but better. The Independence Day stay at the hotel was great! The access to Lincoln Center for ballet, concerts, hop-on hop-off bus were the closest. Hotel service, staff, room size and conditions were good. "Is This a Spa Hotel"
We have stayed at the Empire for the past 5 summers because we love the location and the rooftop deck. This time we were here for 9 days. Our air conditioning was not operational much of the time and for the last 6 days, the elevators have not been operating correctly causing us to have to use the stairs. We did complain to the manager finally yesterday. […] He apologized but offered no solution to the problems. Today he was hanging out on the rooftop deck while customers had to resort to climbing 11 floors to get there. The employees are all very nice, but can't make up for the poor maintenance and management of the hotel. We will find somewhere else next summer. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The location of the hotel is wonderful however I experienced some issues with the hotel itself. A/C unit in the room was noisy and barely worked, the hallways were also not well ventilated. I used the fitness center which had an odd smell, two of the elevators were out of order and there was an insane price for items in the room (small bottle of water […] $7.50! Coffee Pod $3.50!) that most hotels provide at no charge. I asked front desk to extend my check out by 1 hour and was told that they were completely booked however when I looked online (both at hotels.com and hotel's own website) there were plenty of rooms in my category open. The roof pool/bar space is very nice and the hotel restaurant, Ed's Chowder house has great food. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"The worst hotel experience I have had in a while"
This was the worst hotel experience I have had in a long time. I have learned to rely on reviews to make hotel selections and this hotel had pretty good reviews as well as the location for NYC. Now, when you go to NYC, you cannot expect a huge room, but if you pay more than $300/night, you expect good customer service, cleanliness and the room to be […] nice with everything working. This hotel not only didn't give me a room that had a working A/C but you could not get anyone on the phone downstairs to talk to. The phone kept going to voicemail and even if you leave a message, no one returned your calls. I'm sorry-- a 4 star hotel doesn't do that. So after I spent one night with no a/c, I went downstairs and they told me they will move me later on the day. Then they gave me another room but a/c wasn't working again. And when I complained that this is annoying that they cannot give me a room that is functional and I'm wasting my time moving, the concierge had the nerve to tell me that I'm making it up. The third room was fine in my 2 day stay in NYC. This hotel has an awesome location: you are right next to Lincoln center and Central Park, but that's all they have going for them. It's not worth $300/ night and it's definitely less then 2 star rating. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"great location, horrible service"
We stayed here this past weekend and I have to say that the hotel itself wasn't bad at all. It was decent. The customer service, however, was horrible. The front desk clerk argued for about 10 minutes with the housekeeping person on the phone while I stood in front of him to get checked in. The manager was unresponsive to any requests we had and housekeeping […] staff was just rude! The shower had no second door so the water went every where and when we turned the shower nob, it came out of the wall! The beds were nice and the room was clean. "Convenient location but typical small NYC room"
The Empire hotel was a fun place to stay. Albeit one night, I had a great time and opportunity to walk to local spots and take advantage of the rooftop bar at night. It's a big plus not to wait in line being a guest at the hotel where you can go directly to the elevator up to the roof. With the Lincoln Center next door, it does get quite busy on the […] weekends but never noisy in the rooms. The room itself was very small and really for one or two people max. I also had a "great" view of a brick wall. But, for the area and the great decor, it was still worth it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Location is everything"
Surly desk manager as my 3pm check-in was unavailable. Asked to go away a few times. Offered a room upgrade but she rescinded it due to hotel's inability to get the room ready. The elevator wait is atrocious, 3 out of 4 actually worked. Many folks meandering through back stairs. No complaints about location. Room was small but adequate.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not the experience I was hoping for"
The Empire has all of the makings of a great hotel, but unfortunately, service was not the quality I was hoping for and small details (such as room size, no ice bucket in bedroom, no shower door) made for an uncomfortable stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not worth the price"
We decided to stay at the Empire hotel since we were going to have engagement picture done in Central Park. The location was great it was near Lincoln center, central park and subway. Rooms not worth the price. The first room was on 1st flr and handicap accessible but room was old, musty, small, tight and NO mirror in the room. we requested another […] on the 11th floor and it was much better and it had a full length mirror but the bathroom was like a closet and it gets noisy at night since rooftop bar is on top & you can hear people walking back to their rooms during the early morning hours. The doors are definitely not sound proof or insulated. what particularly irritated me was the service the concierge staff are clueless. We called the front desk to ask if the rooftop pool had the empire hotel sign since we wanted to take pictures there. The front desk person said NO so then we decided not to have pictures taken there. The next morning we decided to see the rooftop pool and lo and behold! THE EMPIRE HOTEL sign was there!!!! If you work in a hotel you should probably know where to find things in the hotel and what amenities and etc are there. How can the front desk concierge people be so ignorant?!?!?! The elevators in the hotel are also very very old and it takes forever to get to the lobby and the elevator stops at random floors with no one pressing the button. Overall, we are not coming back to this hotel. We will just spend our money on a better hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Location couldn't have been better. We arrived before check in, our bags were checked and they called us when the room was ready. Beautiful lobby, friendly people. "whos in charge?"
The hotel visually is great. The employees are friendly. Checking in was a long drawn out affair, with one and a half receptionists checking people in, and check out was worse (this isn't a surprise as you KNOW how many guests are arriving and leaving each day) The bathroom is a joke, the maid left the hand-held shower on and directed at the shower […] opening EVERYDAY so when you reached in to turn it on you got a freezing blast of water, the sink didn't drain at all, Check out day I called for a porter and my car at 11:00, the car took an hour and the porter 1.5 hours. I called the front desk from my room to request the porter again and the line wasnt answered for 18 MINUTES, so I hung up and dialed through and outside line which took 15 minutes....and the receptionist said "sorry, we're very busy here." You were fully booked so I cant understand why you cant keep fully staffed. "Meh - I've had better"
I stayed at the Empire over Memorial Day weekend, and I was pretty excited about the rooftop bar - which I was told would be open until around 2am. It closed before I even came back from dinner at around 10:30pm. However, this may have been a blessing in disguise because the clientele that was left over from the bar closing was causing a scene in the […] entrance and seemed questionable to begin with. The room was nice enough, but the showers don't have full doors. Not usually a problem except that water pours all over the floor. When I asked the front desk about it, they said the best they could do is have extra towels delivered to the room - fair enough - but they delivered two extra bathmats. I mean, that would be good enough for most I guess, but apparently we like more interesting showers than most because I was looking for something more along the lines of Moses to part the seas of the bathroom floor. Another word to the wise, make sure you don't try to leave at checkout. The elevator situation is pretty bad. It literally took fifteen minutes to catch an elevator. I attempted to call the front desk from the room to see if I could just check out there, and they never even picked up the phone. All in all, it's a NYC hotel. It's going to have its quirks, but honestly, I'd stay somewhere else before coming back here. Way too many other choices in the city for the same price, and most of the places I've stayed will jump hoops at first mention of an issue. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great potential, poor execution."
I booked a King Superior room for my husband's birthday. Based on another reviewer's advice, I called in advance to request a room on a higher floor for a better view. The gentleman on the phone was very pleasant and ensured me that he had made a notation on my reservation. When we checked in, the desk clerk handed me our key to a room on the first […] floor. I mentioned that I had requested a room on a higher floor and he told me there was no notation on my reservation and that they were fully booked. It was only 4pm, and check in begins at 3, so I was sure that there was a room that no one had checked into yet on a higher floor than 1. However, the clerk dismissed me with a "well the first floor is actually on the third level of the hotel...", and I left to go to our room. The elevators seem to be under maintenance and were extraordinarily slow, so one benefit to being on our low level floor was that we only had to walk up 2 flights. The room was very spacious for New York and the furnishings were modern and pleasant. However, our "view" was of the HVAC system and construction supplies. And when we took showers, the floor in the bathroom got soaked due to the poor placement of the shower head and the shower door. It also took several minutes for the water to heat up. The best part of this hotel was Gerard, the bartender in the lobby bar. He made great cocktails and was very friendly. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
