"The worst hotel experience I have had in a while"
This was the worst hotel experience I have had in a long time. I have learned to rely on reviews to make hotel selections and this hotel had pretty good reviews as well as the location for NYC. Now, when you go to NYC, you cannot expect a huge room, but if you pay more than $300/night, you expect good customer service, cleanliness and the room to be […] nice with everything working. This hotel not only didn't give me a room that had a working A/C but you could not get anyone on the phone downstairs to talk to. The phone kept going to voicemail and even if you leave a message, no one returned your calls. I'm sorry-- a 4 star hotel doesn't do that. So after I spent one night with no a/c, I went downstairs and they told me they will move me later on the day. Then they gave me another room but a/c wasn't working again. And when I complained that this is annoying that they cannot give me a room that is functional and I'm wasting my time moving, the concierge had the nerve to tell me that I'm making it up. The third room was fine in my 2 day stay in NYC. This hotel has an awesome location: you are right next to Lincoln center and Central Park, but that's all they have going for them. It's not worth $300/ night and it's definitely less then 2 star rating. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

After reading a couple reviews I was a bit skeptical, but the Empire is a surprisingly great hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Convenient location...near Central Park and Columbus Cir subway station. Friendly staff. Rooftop pool area was nice but not family friendly. Bring your own k-cups! They charge $3 per. For that price we walked down to Starbucks.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I have stayed many times at the Empire. The service is very consistent - the staff is particularly effective and friendly - and the location is perfect. The rooms are comfortable , but small as usual in ny.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good hotel, very convenient to Lincoln Center"
The Empire Hotel is just across the street from Lincoln Center which was perfect for our week in New York. It was also very close to Central Park and a lot of good restaurants. The down side - hotel had problems with their elevators and one day we had no hot water in the shower. Also LOTS of stairs to get to the pool area on the roof.Genuine Expedia guest review
"great location, horrible service"
We stayed here this past weekend and I have to say that the hotel itself wasn't bad at all. It was decent. The customer service, however, was horrible. The front desk clerk argued for about 10 minutes with the housekeeping person on the phone while I stood in front of him to get checked in. The manager was unresponsive to any requests we had and housekeeping […] staff was just rude! The shower had no second door so the water went every where and when we turned the shower nob, it came out of the wall! The beds were nice and the room was clean. "Convenient location but typical small NYC room"
The Empire hotel was a fun place to stay. Albeit one night, I had a great time and opportunity to walk to local spots and take advantage of the rooftop bar at night. It's a big plus not to wait in line being a guest at the hotel where you can go directly to the elevator up to the roof. With the Lincoln Center next door, it does get quite busy on the […] weekends but never noisy in the rooms. The room itself was very small and really for one or two people max. I also had a "great" view of a brick wall. But, for the area and the great decor, it was still worth it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"just a great location."
rooms given to those with reservations through expididia are the worst in the hotel. then they start discussing with you additional charges for a reasonable room. staff unfrindly and the bathrooms are a disaster you can hardly move or use the seat. no door for the shower so the whole bathroom gets wet. i will never stay ther again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Loved our weekend"
The hotel is in a perfect location, walk to central park, weekend flea market at 76th and columbus, nice area for resturants, beautiful bar and lounge. "Great Location, Great Price, Decent Room"
This was the least expensive hotel in the Lincoln Center / Columbus Circle area at time of our booking. The location is great and our room had a nice view of Lincoln Center. The room could use a bit of polish, but perhaps it was the lowest price for a reason. Overall, the room did not feel dirty and the bed was clean. As other images have shown, the […] paint on the bathroom door was peeling, the wallpaper was peeling, the shower tile was poorly applied, and the furniture was lopsided and propped up by small discs under the legs which moved out of place easily. A fine place to stay while traveling. Not so great if you're trying to impress on a date. Although, their two story lobby and bar have a fun 1920's theme. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Ideal for Lincoln Center"
I always stay here for the ballet if I can. A bit pricey but sometimes good deals. Perfect location since you can just walk across the street. makes dining and ballet effortless. Good facilities. Some rooms looking into airshaft are to be avoided. Jr. suites worth extra for more space. Requests for ice, change and robes very prompt. desk can get crowded […] at noon an 3-ish. "Location is everything"
Surly desk manager as my 3pm check-in was unavailable. Asked to go away a few times. Offered a room upgrade but she rescinded it due to hotel's inability to get the room ready. The elevator wait is atrocious, 3 out of 4 actually worked. Many folks meandering through back stairs. No complaints about location. Room was small but adequate.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not the experience I was hoping for"
The Empire has all of the makings of a great hotel, but unfortunately, service was not the quality I was hoping for and small details (such as room size, no ice bucket in bedroom, no shower door) made for an uncomfortable stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not worth the price"
We decided to stay at the Empire hotel since we were going to have engagement picture done in Central Park. The location was great it was near Lincoln center, central park and subway. Rooms not worth the price. The first room was on 1st flr and handicap accessible but room was old, musty, small, tight and NO mirror in the room. we requested another […] on the 11th floor and it was much better and it had a full length mirror but the bathroom was like a closet and it gets noisy at night since rooftop bar is on top & you can hear people walking back to their rooms during the early morning hours. The doors are definitely not sound proof or insulated. what particularly irritated me was the service the concierge staff are clueless. We called the front desk to ask if the rooftop pool had the empire hotel sign since we wanted to take pictures there. The front desk person said NO so then we decided not to have pictures taken there. The next morning we decided to see the rooftop pool and lo and behold! THE EMPIRE HOTEL sign was there!!!! If you work in a hotel you should probably know where to find things in the hotel and what amenities and etc are there. How can the front desk concierge people be so ignorant?!?!?! The elevators in the hotel are also very very old and it takes forever to get to the lobby and the elevator stops at random floors with no one pressing the button. Overall, we are not coming back to this hotel. We will just spend our money on a better hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great location for Lincoln Center"
Location couldn't have been better. We arrived before check in, our bags were checked and they called us when the room was ready. Beautiful lobby, friendly people. The room was very small, but comfortable. My only negative comment would be on the large amount of items for sale in the room. A suggestion, bring your own water.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"whos in charge?"
The hotel visually is great. The employees are friendly. Checking in was a long drawn out affair, with one and a half receptionists checking people in, and check out was worse (this isn't a surprise as you KNOW how many guests are arriving and leaving each day) The bathroom is a joke, the maid left the hand-held shower on and directed at the shower […] opening EVERYDAY so when you reached in to turn it on you got a freezing blast of water, the sink didn't drain at all, Check out day I called for a porter and my car at 11:00, the car took an hour and the porter 1.5 hours. I called the front desk from my room to request the porter again and the line wasnt answered for 18 MINUTES, so I hung up and dialed through and outside line which took 15 minutes....and the receptionist said "sorry, we're very busy here." You were fully booked so I cant understand why you cant keep fully staffed. "Meh - I've had better"
I stayed at the Empire over Memorial Day weekend, and I was pretty excited about the rooftop bar - which I was told would be open until around 2am. It closed before I even came back from dinner at around 10:30pm. However, this may have been a blessing in disguise because the clientele that was left over from the bar closing was causing a scene in the […] entrance and seemed questionable to begin with. The room was nice enough, but the showers don't have full doors. Not usually a problem except that water pours all over the floor. When I asked the front desk about it, they said the best they could do is have extra towels delivered to the room - fair enough - but they delivered two extra bathmats. I mean, that would be good enough for most I guess, but apparently we like more interesting showers than most because I was looking for something more along the lines of Moses to part the seas of the bathroom floor. Another word to the wise, make sure you don't try to leave at checkout. The elevator situation is pretty bad. It literally took fifteen minutes to catch an elevator. I attempted to call the front desk from the room to see if I could just check out there, and they never even picked up the phone. All in all, it's a NYC hotel. It's going to have its quirks, but honestly, I'd stay somewhere else before coming back here. Way too many other choices in the city for the same price, and most of the places I've stayed will jump hoops at first mention of an issue. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great potential, poor execution."
I booked a King Superior room for my husband's birthday. Based on another reviewer's advice, I called in advance to request a room on a higher floor for a better view. The gentleman on the phone was very pleasant and ensured me that he had made a notation on my reservation. When we checked in, the desk clerk handed me our key to a room on the first […] floor. I mentioned that I had requested a room on a higher floor and he told me there was no notation on my reservation and that they were fully booked. It was only 4pm, and check in begins at 3, so I was sure that there was a room that no one had checked into yet on a higher floor than 1. However, the clerk dismissed me with a "well the first floor is actually on the third level of the hotel...", and I left to go to our room. The elevators seem to be under maintenance and were extraordinarily slow, so one benefit to being on our low level floor was that we only had to walk up 2 flights. The room was very spacious for New York and the furnishings were modern and pleasant. However, our "view" was of the HVAC system and construction supplies. And when we took showers, the floor in the bathroom got soaked due to the poor placement of the shower head and the shower door. It also took several minutes for the water to heat up. The best part of this hotel was Gerard, the bartender in the lobby bar. He made great cocktails and was very friendly. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Considering I made the reservation and was confirmed for a larger room and a king bed, I was suprised when I arrived and they had neither. "Horrible front door staff"
The staff at the front door might as well not come to work. We arrived to the hotel and in an attempt to pull up our car to get valeted was a nightmare. No one came to greet us. "Perfect location for opera, ballet or symphony"
My friend and I shared a junior suite at the Empire for five nights, mainly to attend the American Ballet Theater at Lincoln Center. We enjoyed the hotel's convenience and facilities. We were not very comfortable in our room, which was quite large, but lacking in important storage space in the bathroom and in the closet. There is only one short bar […] with hangers, and it is too high for short guests to reach. The minibar takes up most of the space in the closet. In the bathroom there is very little space to put your personal items, none at all next to the sink. There are only two clothes drawers, in spite of the fact that there could be three or four guests in the suite. Certainly inadequate for two female guests with clothes, accessories and cosmetics for a six day stay. Also, the Empire nickels and dimes its guests. If you want a few peanuts with your cocktail, you must pay for them. If you want a coffee pot in your room, you will be charged $3 a cup. Bottled water by your bed is $7. I think this is tacky for a four star hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Worth it for location. 4 blocks to Columbus Circle"
We have stayed at this hotel twice. The location is great. Ed's Chowder House next door, PJ Clarke's on the other side. There is a Starbuck's and Duane Reade right around the corner. The Smith is across the street, great for breakfast before you head out for the day. The hotel itself is great. Beautiful, comfortable, and the rooms are a nice size for […] NYC. The shower is horrible. It is impossible to take a shower without flooding the bathroom floor. All in all I give it 3.5-4 stars out of 5. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"location and rooms"
I loved the location of the hotel. That's where it ends. The room was so small I immediately went back downstairs and told them it was unacceptable. I was told that it was all they had and nothing they could do. Granted, it was the week of Columbia's graduation. The bathroom was the smallest hotel bathroom I had ever been in. I could almost touch all […] 4 walls standing in the middle of the room. The closet looked like an afterthought and basically no chest of drawers. We lived out of our suitcases. They wanted $12.95 for 24 hour internet so I had to go to Starbucks on the corner unless I wanted to pay for what should have been included with the room. Disappointed....yes. "Noisy, tiny and expensive"
Even though this hotel has been renovated since the last time we stayed there, (15+ years ago), it doesn't seem much better. Actually, it was brighter and more elegant in appearance prior to the renovation. Rooms are tiny and dark. Decor throughout is dark so leaves one to wonder why? No glasses in the room if you want to have a beverage. No ice machine […] on the floors. We heard a constant thumping from the Lounge (we were on the 8th floor). For the same price we could've stayed at some other nicer hotels but thought we would give the Empire a try since it had been "renovated". There's coffee in the room but it cost $3+ so we were lucky that there was a Starbucks downstairs around the corner. We go to NYC 3-4 times a year and we will NOT be staying here again. "Not worth the price"
I ordered a superior room, and I have been given a room at first floor with view on an inner court and very noisy AC towers (two meters from the window!) - definitely not what you would define a superior room. Staff was not very helpful in chenging the room. After some iterations I ended up in a room with a nice view. The very nice feature of the hotel […] is the rooftop bar, and the pool which is opened in June-September (check the dates). Note that in the hotel half of the rooms have a view on a narrow inner court, but from the web site you cannot make the difference. The big problem is noise, since the windows are too old and either the AC tower noise (if you are in the inner court) or the trafic noise (if you have the view) is pretty disturbing. In general, it is not at the level of a four star hotel, and it is overpriced. It is also rather shocking to find water bottles at four times the price you pay at the shop beside the hotel. Finally , the wireless is not free, you pay a considerable fee and it is quite slow. So my conclusion is don't go, unless it is summer and you can profit of the pool, and you are ready to noisy rooms and slow wireless. But be sure that the room is not on the inner court. Excellent location and a very comfortable stay. Staff is responsive and nice.Genuine Expedia guest review
The good thing about this hotel is the location. You are close to Central Park, subway stops, shopping, Lincoln Center, etc. The scene at the hotel seems pretty swanky as well. The line to get to the rooftop bar was a block long...in the rain! Unfortunately, that is not my scene. The only good thing about the room was that the bed was comfortable. Everything […] else was not worth the money. The bathroom was tiny. Definitely only room for one person - no joke. The sink was so small that the water would splash out if you turned it on too much. Lots of noise - street and party goers. The AC unit was from the 70s. I don't think I'll stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Location made it worth it."
Knew from previous reviews that the rooms were small, but guess I wasn't expecting rooms to be as small as they were. Bathroom very small; shower only half enclosed which I guess theoretically would keep most of the water in the shower (but that theory didn't work!). AC very good - no problems with temperature in room. Bed comfy. Refrigerator very well […] stocked, but very expensive. Bar on rooftop was so crowded that it seemed unsafe and was not at all enjoyable. Bar in lobby was great - waitress was very good and pleasant and noise level allowed for good conversation. Located in great spot - right across from Lincoln Center and very close to subways which made it a great place to stay. If you plan to spend a lot of time in your hotel room, I would not recommend the Empire, but if you are in New York to see the sights, it is a good choice. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
