Stamford Plaza Hotel and Conference Center - Stamford

I have stayed at this property a couple times in the past when travelling on business. Overall, it "was" a nice property in which the rooms were clean, comfortable, and well appointed. Additionally, the lobby area "was" a good place to grab a meal or a drink at the bar. I recently booked this place and thought I was in a post-apocalyptic fall out shelter […] when I entered the lobby via the parking lot. There was no one in the lobby and it was dead quiet. Everything was closed. After circling the lobby, I finally noticed a make-shift check in area. The first thing I asked the front desk manager was "What happened? Are we in ZombieLand?" A little known fact. This property is in the midst of a major overhaul and converting to a Crowne Plaza property and construction will be in place through the balance of 2013. Hotels.com should open and honestly publish this information !! So in closing, the rooms are still nice but that is all you will get at this property - a very dead vibe that only the walking dead would feel right at home with. This is a good example of a bad transition/rebranding. Parts of the room had been updated, but basic things like paint and maybe a fan in the bathroom would help. All the public spaces need work, has a very used look. it would have been nice to been alerted of the transitions taking place at the stamford plaza.. guess crown hotel has taken over.. torn sheets.. no hair dryer, no mini frig.. no ice maker near by .. no room service.. charged 2.00 dollars for coffee.. which they could have atleast for all the inconvenices offer for free.. then when my 18yr daughter went […] down at 7am.. Old style atrium hotel with a fairly tired lobby and unwelcoming decor in public spaces. Noisy home show going on in the lobby while we were there. Rooms were comfortable, but the blackout blinds are hidden behind the sheer curtains - huh? Super water pressure in the shower though.

The bed was comfortable the room was great, the shower had a glass wall blocking off half of it so water got all over the floor. But that was the least of my worries compared to checking in. He later explained that it was because someone else was late for her shift and he didn't want to have to work any longer but was doing it because no one else was there to do it. We stayed at this hotel because my son had a state wrestling tournament the next morning in Stamford. After a 4 hour drive there (normally only 2) because it was the weekend if the blizzard we arrived to the restaurant not serving food even though the sign said open until midnight. Luckily the IHop across the street was open. We were settled in and […] all was good until 11:15 when a band starts playing music in the lobby. Our room had a window to the lobby. After about 15 minutes we called the front desk and asked how long would this last they said until after 1:00. We said really we should have been informed of this upon check in because who host a party in the lobby and the band doesn't start until 11:15. After about 30 min it has now woken up both of our boys it was so loud that we might as well have been in the lobby! So after the 3rd call to the front desk they moved us to a different room at 12:15 am which was annoying since we had to be out at 7:30 am. About 15 minutes after we are in the new room someone was trying to get in. Apparently the front desk had just issued them keys for this room. Of course the second room we were put in was not nearly as nice as the room i had booked! I will never stay at this hotel again and have made sure to tell everyone about it to not stay there! It is not a safe hotel. Extremely reduced staff. Evenings there's only one person at the front desk and to overlook the huge property. The first night of our two days stay, around 9:30 p.m., we reported suspicious activity and possible attempt to break into our room but the front desk only employee did not take any action. Eventually, the next morning […] the staff called the local police who arrested the guest acting suspiciously. Even though we reported our feeling about the hotel's security issues to the manager in charge (obviously anyone could access the rooms without beeing seen by the staff), there was not much apology, or update about security measures, or any courtesy of any kind for our inconvenience. We had to ask for a new room, since the convicted knew were we stayed. Hence our disappointment. We cannot recommend this hotel to anybody. Read more

I only stayed here because my other hotel reservation was accidentally lost by my company. Service is minimal at best. I had to walk 3 flights to find a functioning ice machine. There is NO room service - not even for basic needs. There is a large banner in the lobby proclaiming that the hotel will soon be a Crowne Plaza. I would think that the current employees would be bummed out staring at the daily reminder. Other than that, it was a great stay! Lots of nearby shopping but a hike from downtown.The free breakfast was sparse but exactly the kind I like.

I usually stay at the adjoining Holiday Inn, but since they were booked, I figured the Stamford Plaza would be the next best thing. I should have kept looking. My room was clean, spacious, and reasonably priced but one mishap after another led to a less-than-spectacular experience. It started at check-in. My door was dead-bolted from the inside which […] required security to come let me in. It was a minor inconvenience in the scheme of things but it seemed to set the tone for my stay. My room had no alarm clock, a box I hadn’t intended for the trash was taken by housekeeping, a group of drunken utility workers on my floor were loud and obnoxious well into the night, and the phone in my room had no dial-tone when I tried to call security to report someone attempting to gain access to my room at 1:15 AM. I could have forgiven all of this had the front desk acted like they cared. Instead I got indifference and condescension (“Did you look on the nightstand between the beds?” was the response I got when I told them my room was missing a clock, and I got a shrug when I told them my phone had no dial-tone.) I understand the hurricane threw a monkey-wrench into things and I didn’t expect everything to be in perfect working order. But this is a SERVICE INDUSTRY and at a MINIMUM employees should demonstrate empathy and assume accountability. Those things don’t cost a penny and they can be the difference between repeat business and a review like this. Time to wake-up, Stamford Plaza! Read more

Emergency trip to Stamford. Pubic hair on toilet seat upon arrival. Showers are poorly designed "half door" so as to allow the bathroom to become flooded. Bed, pillows, room were clean. Hotel is old and per locals has changed hands numerous times. This is self-evident and this hotel is in desperate need of updating.

The staff were friendly but not very helpful. The hotel was ok and the hall carpet was probably new. The room was partly tile with a dark wood floor appearance and carpet under and around the beds. There was one easy chair but no desk chair. When we asked for a chair and other amenities, the staff informed us that the rooms are not equiped with a desk […] chair, a microwave, or refrigerator. We could pay an additional 25 dollars for a refrigeraton. We prepaid for the room through Expedia so we had to endure the discomfort of a cold room for four days because the heating was inadequate. Nothing like a hot shower in a cold room to start your day. We were on the fourth floor and there was only one working ice machine. The breakfast consisted of an individually wrapped sweet roll, or a roll with no butter, and your choice of tea or coffee. We were charged 10 dollars a day for parking and had no choice but to pay it because there was no place else to park. I would recommend Motel 6 where they have microwaves, refrigerators and room heating for less money. Read more

I was expecting the staff to be friendly and helpful but found that the front desk staff seemed bothered that I was there. When I asked for an ice bucket because my room did not have one, I first had to wait while the two staff members at the front desk finished talking about a football game before one decided to help me. In the morning, there was no one there to check me out or any directions on how to check out of the hotel. It was as if being there was getting in their way. My first greeting at the front desk was to be ignored by three girls who clearly were not into customer service. When I was addressed the girl express a patronizing attitude and seemed to address my questions as though they were both stupid and an interruption to her day. While it was clear the hotel was recently renovated, i was not a fan of the decor […] at all. It is dark and uninviting. The room was comfortable enough with nice linens and pillows. I visited the bar in the lobby to relax and met a bartender who barely spoke english and made no conversation. They were out of grenadine and pineapple juice. Both of which they did eventually find and were able to serve me. The price of the hotel was fair but I didn't take too kindly to having to pay for parking in an area where there is obviously no free parking anywhere. I thought this was taking advantage of the hotel guests. I will not recommend this hotel to anyone staying in stamford and would tell friends to check out the Holiday Inn next door instead.
