Friendly staff. Two blocks from Asilomar grounds and beach. Downtown just a short drive away. Well kept and spacious rooms. Closets a bit small but ok. Hallways leading into building had an older smell. Rooms nice and comfy. Great price if traveling with a family or small group.

The property itself is very nice and doesn't have a hotel feel to it. It is very quiet and peaceful there. The buildings look more like condos. The room, however, was dated and a tad dingy, though roomy enough and comfortable. There is a large walk-in closet with a kitchenette. The heater (forced air) was very loud. The balcony had a lovely view of large trees but it was full of bird droppings and not well maintained. The bathroom had a very strange sunken tub/shower arrangement, so I would caution anyone with physical challenges or very young children that this could be an issue. There is a walking/running trail right behind the hotel, so this is a nice option for runners. You can see deer wandering around the area and there is a park with a playground just 2 blocks away. The hotel is a short drive (a few minutes) away from downtown Pacific Grove, so it's very convenient to restaurants, shopping, strolling, etc.

My family had a very good experience at this hotel! It was very clean, inside and out. Very quiet, the only sound heard at night was the ocean from our balcony. The kitchenette was stocked with dishes, glasses, silverware, dish soap and sponge and had ample room to prepare meals with the addition of the balcony for our portable grill. We had the two bedroom unit which was great for us because we were traveling with our 5 y.o. and 18 y.o. daughters and that afforded the 18 y.o. her privacy, yet she was still in the same unit as we were. The beds were and linens were very comfortable and the furnishings were up to date and in great shape. The breakfast was nice and more than you normally get. We stayed 2 nights and the room was cleaned and towels restocked for the second night. I was impressed watching the cleaning staff even wiping down the outside railings and balconies. The staff was pleasant and polite. Check in and out was a breeze. This place is a gem and well away from "Hotel Row", yet still within minutes to everything. We will absolutely stay here again and very much recommend Howard Johnson Express Inn at Pacific Grove to others!

Neighborhood relatively quiet. Close to activities in Pacific Grove. Conveniently located yet can be hard to find especially in the dark. It is priced a bit higher than I would prefer to pay. On day 1, replacement clean towels were placed outside the rooms in a plastic bag. Kudos - keeps towels clean. On day 2, replacement clean towels were stacked on the carpeted floor. No kudos - stacking the towels directly to the carpeted floors just made the bottom towel unclean and unsterilized as well as the towels leaning against the wall if the wall is unclean. This makes me wonder if the towels that I'm using are clean. Toilet was enclosed in a cramp room. It would have been better to have the door open out or have a sliding door to open/close the room. I kept hitting my 6 1/2 size women's shoe when using the facilities. Also, it was ackward to get into the bathtub/shower as you walk up two steps to get into the bathtub/shower. Breakfast was basic limited to apple, juice, coffee, and carbs primarily cereal, muffins, pancakes, waffles, and oatmeal. Would have like to see more fruit like bananas and oranges.

I was allergic (I have pet allergies) to something in the hotel room, and when I asked the front desk if I could have another room (and they were clearly NOT full) they said that I could not. I told the front desk that my reaction was so bad that I would not be able to sleep in the room and they essentially said that there was not anything they could do about it. I suspect that someone had a cat in the room even though there is a no pets policy. This creates a huge medical issue for those who are sensitive to pet dander and it was greatly disappointing that the front desk disagreed with me and would not improve my stay. I checked out early and took a loss for the room.

The things we liked the most were the gas fireplace and the private large deck and patio areas. The rooms also come with DVD players. The area where the hotel is located is very qainte and quiet with walking paths that you may end up sharing with some local deer. There are some very good restaurants in that area as well.

Althought the 3rd floor accomadation was not what I had expected with my leg condition as it was at the time of the stay. The inn keeper was not able to place me a 1st floor room location. It might have been my fault because I did not mention my condition at the time of booking.

The beds were very uncomfortable, the shower wasn't much more than a trickle, and the fan in the bathroom didn't work so there wasn't any ventilation with the door closed. Also because this inn is a converted split level condo, everytime someone was coming or going to their room the traffic created alot of noise due to a common stairway through the levels. This common stairway was probably internal to one condo before the conversion.

This hotel is a "converted condo" style space. Each set of apartments or condos has a one bedroom, bath and small kitchenette space. However, the space leaves somthing to be desired. The kitchen is actually a walk-in closet without table or chairs to sit on and away from the bedroom where the table and chairs actually are. The battub has the facuet on the outside of the enclosure! And to top it all off, there were mmaintenance men living in the building and playing their music very loud during the day and night!!!!!!!!! The check-in person wasn't very friendly, didn't seem to care. There was paint drops all over the steps leading into the suite and up the inside stairway!!

This hotel appears to be a converted condominium complex and it set in a quiet and very pretty residential area. The rooms are adequately sized and our suite of two bedrooms was great for traveling with our teenager. However, the maintenance of the hotel was terrible. The bathroom wallpaper was dirty and patched in many places. There was some mildew and I spotted several hairs of unknown origen. The furnishings were old and the bathroom cabinets were damaged and dirty. The television in the main room was placed in a very awkward position. All this being said, with a little maintenance and attention to detail, this could be a higher rated hotel.
