It's a wonderful stay!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
My stay at the Howard Johnson in Pacific Grove was good, very reasonably priced. I like knowing that I get what I expect and the staff is curteous.Genuine Expedia guest review
Very very good custumer service!!! Clean rooms. Peaceful and quiet. Close to the beach.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Room was too warm!"
The hotel was clean and appeared to be well maintained. However, we did not have any air conditioning and the ceiling fall was inadequate to cool the room. The sliding door (the only method of ventilation) did not have a screen. While we were awake we left the door open which helped but at night when we slept the room was stuffy and warm.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Near Asilomar Beach"
Clean comfy sizable room. Well kept property however the furniture and decor of the hotel room is out dated and a little beat up. Cetainly not the worst place but the rooms could use a face lift.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good for a family :)"
The hotel staff were super nice and very helpful, however the only downfall of the room was it was a little smaller than the picture looked. But, I would stay here again. The breakfast was pretty good. The Breakfast room was kept clean, stocked. The hotel itself was a bit out dated. But the beds were comfy!!! Also, close to the beach!!Genuine Expedia guest review
Very good hotel, great location, will definetely stay againGenuine Expedia guest review
Loved having a kitchen so we could gather with friends for cards. Walk to beach thru asilomar. Nick is very nice.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice and quiet"
We really enjoyed the location and quietness of this hotel. The only thing they need to upgrade is the heat system, very loud. Other than that we would defintly stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"condo meets hotel"
Very cute re-purposed condos. Our room was huge (king with kitchen) and came with a deck. The housekeeper was still there when we checked in at 3:30 (check in starts at 2pm), so we came back later to get settled in. Another housekeeper came by around 10:45am before our 11:00am check out to clean, when we were still getting ready (which was a bit little […] annoying but glad the rooms are cleaned). Great fireplace, comfortable bed, free wifi, overall a great weekend getaway for a great price! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great romantic getaway"
Great deal! We were very pleased with the hotel and the spacious room, especially for the price. Quiet great locationGenuine Expedia guest review
"Good option - next to state park"
Overall the hotel is very nice. There are separate buildings- 6 rooms to a building with a garage for two cars in each building. The one problem I had was that the door was left unlocked after cleaning.Genuine Expedia guest review
"see parts of Pacific Grove"
Our stay was excellent. We usually go to Monterey once or twice a year just to get away. This time we spent all our time in Pacific Grove and Carmel. We saw parts of Pacific Grove we had never been too. We had brilliant sunny days and got to see the Monarch Grove Sanctuary complete with butterflies!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Decent room, but that's all."
Unhelpful office staff, shower didn't drain, vending machines didn't work and hotel staff just answered questions or concerns with a "not my job" kind of attitude. Wierd floor plan.Genuine Expedia guest review
"No 'Suites' at this place!"
The '2 bedroom Suite' was actually 2 connecting small bedrooms. There was no 'suite' about it. We shared 1 bathroom and had to go through the other bedroom to access it. The 1 closet for both rooms was a closet so small, the ironing board couldn't even fit in it. The stairwells were narrow and noisy with others coming and going. The walls were very […] thin. The last night, the beeping from a dying fire alarm battery in the stairwell went all night long. It was a very disappointing stay. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"walking distance to Asilomar"
The hotel itself is outdated but clean. Our two bedroom suite was comfortable but did have a 'musty' smell to it. Breakfast is served at 8 and it convenient before heading out. What we liked was the location. It is walking distance to Asilomar. My daughters' (7 and 4yrs old) loved to Asilomar (if you are lucky you see deer) and spending the day playing […] in the beach. It was unsually warm for November, so we enjoyed the outdoors a lot. Another option for breakfast is eating at Asilomar, but do call ahead for availability and pricing. The hotel is also very close to the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Nice and affordable place. My room was big and clean. The look was a bit outdated, but not too much.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Howard Johnson Stay in Pacific Grove"
Our stay was good and in a good location. My only suggestion is that if you are going to do food for breakfast that it start by 7:00 am rather than 8:00. With little ones it would have helped to have something to give them before going out to breakfast.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Quirky but clean & comfy"
Enjoyed our 5 day stay. It's an older condo unit that's been renovated into a motel. Some quirkiness, like the shower is sideways in the tub, the microwave and refrigerator were in a huge walk in closet and all the lights were on motion sensors, but truly comfy and lovely!!! The front desk woman, Pam was extremely helpful, sweet as pie and delightful. […] She called me personally to let me know that I'd left some garments behind. There were deer on the grounds and it's within easy walking distance of Asilomar and beach front. We would definitely stay there again, even with the quirkiness. "Nice place to stay."
Quiet and clean, close to state beach. Some deer grazing in back-almost makes you feel you're in the country.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Like other reviewers, I was a bit confused about the location...It's in a residential neighborhood & I arrived at night with the fog rolling in. But once I found my way, the room was large with tv, wi-fi, free parking, frig, & microwave. The bed (Serta Sleeper) was very comfy. The shower had plenty of hot water. Continental breakfast was hi w carbs […] and low on protein but okay. The central location made getting around easy... Monterey is the next town over and it's not hard to drive down to Big Sur (only, Highway 1 has only 1 lane just before Bixby Bridge... so be prepared to wait). Incidentally, there's a Safeway & Trader Joe's off of the 68. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
This is a gem. Beautiful area, near Asilomar beach. Clean and comfortable. Deer right outside on the grounds. Breakfast of cereal, waffles, coffee, o.j., sweet rolls, etc. Other guests noisy, though that was no fault of managements.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"close to family wedding"
the rooms were very small as was the bath and closetGenuine Hotels.com guest review
A very pleasant surprise. Quiet residential neighborhood and convenient to everything.Room was huge!!!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We are not handicapped, but we are senior citizens. We had a lot of stairs to climb, which I was not expecting. I have arthritis in my knees, so this was a pain......figuratively and literally. The room, while it was clean and we had an ample supply of towels, etc. there were spots on the rug and the bed was very very firm. The bathtub was an accident […] waiting to happen. After the first shower, we decided we would wait to get home to take our next shower. One had to climb up two steps, turn a corner to get the shower on and then, of course, you had to get out. Tile floors tend to get slippery when you have wet feet. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Easy, convenient location"
Had a great time.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Very nice and comfortable hotel. The place seems to be a converted townhouses. So, the rooms are very spacious and my room had a full kitchen and a small seating area in addition to the bedroom, (which was a converted living room). I really liked the gas fireplace and if I was staying longer the deck area would have been useful. The complimentary breakfast […] area was a big plus as well. The room could have used some cosmetic fix-ups. Overall I was happy with my stay and would stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice quiet place to stay."
We enjoyed the room. I especially liked the large bathtub....great for relaxing after spending the day walkiing around Monterey. The view off the balcony was nice, we didn't have to look at another wall of the hotel or some wall next door. It was a nice view of trees and a little of the neighborhood. We would definitely stay there again. The only complaint […] was all the bird droppings on the balcony. I would have complained but it wasn't warm enough to sit outside so didn't bother. "Very Nice 2-Star Hotel - Beautiful Location"
For a 2-star facility, this one is exceptional. It's obvious that the owner and staff work hard to keep it clean. It appears to be old townhouses converted into hotel rooms, 1 to each of the 3 levels. There were a few unique twists in the layout. The tub seemed to have been placed in what was an old closet and the shower head is on a side wall. The […] side room with the fridge, microwave and coffee pot was a large walk-in closet with plenty of room to put out the rollaway bed. Despite all the cleaning, a slight urine smell lingers around the toilet or tub area. It was hard to pin point the source. It's clean but the smell evades the cleaning efforts. The wi-fi connection worked great. The bed was fairly comfortable, especially after we removed the additional padding that was too hot on top of the already padded mattress top. We got exactly what we asked for: a quiet room on the upper floor. The balcony view faced the ocean. No view, but you could hear the waves roaring a few blocks away. The pines with the lichen waving in them and the screeching of blue jays was very peaceful. We skipped breakfast since we wanted a heartier start to the day. This is a great place for a family to stay for a few days, if you want more of a remote quiet residential area. Not a lot of shopping nearby, but it has a nice woodsy feel and is a short walk to the beach - especially if you walk through Asilomar's grounds. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Nice surroundings. Staff was helpful. Room layout a little strange. Microwave and refrigerator in walk in closet. Bed not very comfortable.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A restful stop near the Pacific Ocean"
Howard Johnson Express in Pacific Grove blends in nicely with the rural, woody residential neighborhood. My room reminded me of a forest cabin - and a very comfortable one. The hotel is within walking distance of the Asilomar Stae Beach, while within a short drive to the downtown Pac Grove and to Monterey and Carmel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It was fine for the family stay. A little out of the way, but overall fine.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Liked the quirky and homey feeling of the hotel (converted condos from what I gather) as well as the convenience of the locale. Favorite part was the high ceiling in our top floor room, the cleanliness, and the free continental breakfast. Least favorite part bar none is the fact you give a show while you shower, as there are no window covernings (on […] the top hotel rooms at least). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Our room was not really a room. Bathtub sideways to shower. Room small and up 2 stories. No elevator. Unable to change our dates when we asked.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice place - very quiet"
Free Breakfast was nice. Room very comfortable and quiet. Neighborhood very nice. Free parking was very nice. People were great. Only down side was the bathroom was a little old, could use a remodle to be special.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This hotel is very well located. Easy access to the 17 mile drive, Point Lobos Reserve, beaches, shopping and activities in Monterey and Carmel. Nice breakfast and comfortable beds. We would stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

I was looking forward to the cute chateau-feeling that I got from the website pics. The reality is a this is a bare-bones, outdated, worn, makeshift lodging place that offers only a decent night's sleep.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Only one complant"
After arriving we were told the rooms would not be ready until after 3:00 PM, so we could not rest from the trip right away. We had to drive around and go sightseeing with all the stuff in our car. Other than that, the room was very nice and quietGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Home away from home"
Overall a very nice stay. Nick, the manager, was very helpful. If you plan to visit the Monterey Aquarium buy tickets at the front desk...Two days for less than the cost of a one day admission if you were to buy them at the aquarium. This place was formerly a condominium community that has been converted to rooms with large high ceiling bedrooms, a […] separate "kitchen" room with microwave, refrigerator, and coffeemaker. Sink, commode, Shower and tub areas were a little strange from the usual layout. Tub and shower had separate faucets for each and a step up/step down into the tub. Sinks were in room with hallway leading to shower and commode was in separate room off hallway. Be careful of hot water as it is very hot and the temperature could probably be turned down a little at the water heater. Room was very clean and bed was very comfortable. Complimentary breakfast was pretty good as continental breakfasts go. Nothing in the way of protein for breakfast though. Each room has a small balcony or porch. Overall a very nice place and highly recommended as a "home away from home". Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice & quiet location. Big rooms."
We had a very nice and comfortable stay here. The rooms are big and the bathrooms (at least ours) was fitted with 2 washbasins. There is even a separate room for clothes and luggage storage. Nice and quiet surroundings and only a 10-15 min walk from the scenic beaches/seaside. Our room also had a small balcony, big enough for 2 at least. Breakfast selection […] was very basic, but OK. Free, well working wi-fi. Parking garage(open) at ground level. For a motel in this price range it meets our expectations and even exceeds them. Recommended!! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Nice quiet room, but Rm#108 had the worst shower arrangement. Very unsafe, had to step up on tile steps into a bath that had a shower head installed sideways on the wall. The water leaked onto the floor.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I read the reviews and was very pleased with this place because of the quietness. It felt like we were driving into a neighborhood.note: The sign for the street is easy to miss, GPS was a big help. One review said the hotel used to be a condo complex, and you can tell thats the case with the open garages and homey feel of the complex. Our room was extra […] large with a humongous walk in closet the size of a small xtra room where you could store extra bags or whatever there was even a fold away bed inside the extra space along with mini frig, microwave and coffee maker. I wish the weather (mid July) had been a bit warmer, but compared to our hometown (sacramento,ca) we were excaping 106 degree heat that day to come to Monterey's 62 degree /cloudy/ overcast... but not a bad trade. Had it not been for the cool/cold weather (we were chilly in the evening-bring a sweatshirt) i would have really enjoyed walking down to asilomar to see the ocean, but we had limited time.
