A very pleasant surprise. Quiet residential neighborhood and convenient to everything.Room was huge!!!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We are not handicapped, but we are senior citizens. We had a lot of stairs to climb, which I was not expecting. I have arthritis in my knees, so this was a pain......figuratively and literally. The room, while it was clean and we had an ample supply of towels, etc. there were spots on the rug and the bed was very very firm. The bathtub was an accident […] waiting to happen. After the first shower, we decided we would wait to get home to take our next shower. One had to climb up two steps, turn a corner to get the shower on and then, of course, you had to get out. Tile floors tend to get slippery when you have wet feet. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Easy, convenient location"
Had a great time.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Very nice and comfortable hotel. The place seems to be a converted townhouses. So, the rooms are very spacious and my room had a full kitchen and a small seating area in addition to the bedroom, (which was a converted living room). I really liked the gas fireplace and if I was staying longer the deck area would have been useful. The complimentary breakfast […] area was a big plus as well. The room could have used some cosmetic fix-ups. Overall I was happy with my stay and would stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice quiet place to stay."
We enjoyed the room. I especially liked the large bathtub....great for relaxing after spending the day walkiing around Monterey. The view off the balcony was nice, we didn't have to look at another wall of the hotel or some wall next door. It was a nice view of trees and a little of the neighborhood. We would definitely stay there again. The only complaint […] was all the bird droppings on the balcony. I would have complained but it wasn't warm enough to sit outside so didn't bother. "Very Nice 2-Star Hotel - Beautiful Location"
For a 2-star facility, this one is exceptional. It's obvious that the owner and staff work hard to keep it clean. It appears to be old townhouses converted into hotel rooms, 1 to each of the 3 levels. There were a few unique twists in the layout. The tub seemed to have been placed in what was an old closet and the shower head is on a side wall. The […] side room with the fridge, microwave and coffee pot was a large walk-in closet with plenty of room to put out the rollaway bed. Despite all the cleaning, a slight urine smell lingers around the toilet or tub area. It was hard to pin point the source. It's clean but the smell evades the cleaning efforts. The wi-fi connection worked great. The bed was fairly comfortable, especially after we removed the additional padding that was too hot on top of the already padded mattress top. We got exactly what we asked for: a quiet room on the upper floor. The balcony view faced the ocean. No view, but you could hear the waves roaring a few blocks away. The pines with the lichen waving in them and the screeching of blue jays was very peaceful. We skipped breakfast since we wanted a heartier start to the day. This is a great place for a family to stay for a few days, if you want more of a remote quiet residential area. Not a lot of shopping nearby, but it has a nice woodsy feel and is a short walk to the beach - especially if you walk through Asilomar's grounds. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"A restful stop near the Pacific Ocean"
Howard Johnson Express in Pacific Grove blends in nicely with the rural, woody residential neighborhood. My room reminded me of a forest cabin - and a very comfortable one. The hotel is within walking distance of the Asilomar Stae Beach, while within a short drive to the downtown Pac Grove and to Monterey and Carmel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It was fine for the family stay. A little out of the way, but overall fine.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Liked the quirky and homey feeling of the hotel (converted condos from what I gather) as well as the convenience of the locale. Favorite part was the high ceiling in our top floor room, the cleanliness, and the free continental breakfast. Least favorite part bar none is the fact you give a show while you shower, as there are no window covernings (on […] the top hotel rooms at least). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Home away from home"
Overall a very nice stay. Nick, the manager, was very helpful. If you plan to visit the Monterey Aquarium buy tickets at the front desk...Two days for less than the cost of a one day admission if you were to buy them at the aquarium. This place was formerly a condominium community that has been converted to rooms with large high ceiling bedrooms, a […] separate "kitchen" room with microwave, refrigerator, and coffeemaker. Sink, commode, Shower and tub areas were a little strange from the usual layout. Tub and shower had separate faucets for each and a step up/step down into the tub. Sinks were in room with hallway leading to shower and commode was in separate room off hallway. Be careful of hot water as it is very hot and the temperature could probably be turned down a little at the water heater. Room was very clean and bed was very comfortable. Complimentary breakfast was pretty good as continental breakfasts go. Nothing in the way of protein for breakfast though. Each room has a small balcony or porch. Overall a very nice place and highly recommended as a "home away from home". Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice & quiet location. Big rooms."
We had a very nice and comfortable stay here. The rooms are big and the bathrooms (at least ours) was fitted with 2 washbasins. There is even a separate room for clothes and luggage storage. Nice and quiet surroundings and only a 10-15 min walk from the scenic beaches/seaside. Our room also had a small balcony, big enough for 2 at least. Breakfast selection […] was very basic, but OK. Free, well working wi-fi. Parking garage(open) at ground level. For a motel in this price range it meets our expectations and even exceeds them. Recommended!! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Nice quiet room, but Rm#108 had the worst shower arrangement. Very unsafe, had to step up on tile steps into a bath that had a shower head installed sideways on the wall. The water leaked onto the floor.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I read the reviews and was very pleased with this place because of the quietness. It felt like we were driving into a neighborhood.note: The sign for the street is easy to miss, GPS was a big help. One review said the hotel used to be a condo complex, and you can tell thats the case with the open garages and homey feel of the complex. Our room was extra […] large with a humongous walk in closet the size of a small xtra room where you could store extra bags or whatever there was even a fold away bed inside the extra space along with mini frig, microwave and coffee maker. I wish the weather (mid July) had been a bit warmer, but compared to our hometown (sacramento,ca) we were excaping 106 degree heat that day to come to Monterey's 62 degree /cloudy/ overcast... but not a bad trade. Had it not been for the cool/cold weather (we were chilly in the evening-bring a sweatshirt) i would have really enjoyed walking down to asilomar to see the ocean, but we had limited time. "It is what it is..."
Stayed here several times because of its location close to some relaxing attractions. But: The wi-fi network is almost worthless. If you're lucky you won't get a room which is right above the noisy washing machine the staff runs every afternoon, for at least a couple of hours. At least the sound drowns out that pesky wave and seagull sound. And maybe […] it's a city ordinance which bans gas leaf blowers, since the management uses an electric blower which takes ninety minutes or more to sweep clean the facility. Very relaxing to listen to. My room had a dependable water supply: a leaky bathroom basin faucet which even a blind maid could have observed and reported for repair. I also got one of those new-fangled coffee makers, the ones which come with so much corrosion it takes twenty minutes to brew four cups. That is, when it didn't shut itself off well before the one hour auto shutoff advertised. But the most irritating feature is the absolute cheapness of the management in not investing in some screen doors for the openings to the balconies. Like most places in the area there is no air conditioning available. So you'll want to open the door for some fresh air. But you have to measure the refreshing air against the bugs and leaves which fly in, because the hotel NEVER has any screens. WHY would you want to sit on a balcony, looking at the trees, the fog, and the nature trail, without the joy of flies and debris settling on your bed? Duh! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"12 mnute walk to Asilomar Beach"
The location of the hotel was great, and the rooms were fine. It was a short walk, mostly by public access through the Asilomar Resort, to the white sand beach, and it is less than a 10-minute drive to the Aquarium. The room had a bathtub and a kitchenette with refrigerator and microwave. The room suffers from typical hotel problems -- in the evening […] the wi-fi was so slow I gave up, and during the day while we were out, the maid took our towels but failed to leave replacements. We had to ask for towels, and communication with a maid was difficult. However, the manager was very friendly and helpful. I would stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very nice location; quiet, scenic, peaceful"
Great! We saw dear outside our unit right after we checked in, and the park next door was very peaceful/scenic for strolling. "Deluxe Room, One King Nonsmoking-Stay 4, save 25%"
Solo trip and got a four night 25% off deal for this excellent hotel. It was a first time visit for me and I was very pleased by the cleanliness, the quiet, the peaceful nature of this hotel. I climbed up to the top suite which held a king sized pillow top bed. There was a desk, a nice television, two end tables for the bed, a fan up in the ceiling […] over my bed, a huge walk in closet that held a rollout bed if needed. There were dark curtains and white filmy opaque curtains in my room. The patio had two plastic chairs and was up among the trees facing west away from the carports. Ice machine, washer and dryer in one of the carports, beautiful, large bathtub and shower to soak in. Breakfast room had two types of juices, waffle maker, toaster, bread, bagels, cereals, coffee, fruit...Daily newspaper available as well as movies for $2 each. I parked in a garage under my place. Very close to Asilomar State Park and beach which was great. Closet holds a combination safe, a microwave, coffeemaker, mini fridge. Icemaker downstairs in parking lot. Great deal. Very clean. Very quiet and I enjoyed my stay. Mostly couples were staying in this hotel at the time of my visit. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Howard Johnson Pacific Grove"
Forget anything you thought you knew about Howard Johnson hotels- this is converted condos. It is quiet, private and convenient. "Two star a tad dumpy but roomy"
I booked one of the two bedroom units which was two bedrooms and no living room. It's an ok place if you need room for four and are on a tight budget, but dont expect it to be much nicer than the national chain that "leaves the light on for you". "A great experience for our family"
My family of four (2 boys 13 and 8) stayed one night here on New Year's Eve. The price is a little high for us being on a budget but had stayed there once before a few years ago and already knew it was a nice place. I was impressed once again w/ this place. Very clean and comfortable. We got the King & 2 twin room(s). The kids got to be in the second […] room with the kitchenette & bathroom & the second tv. The microwave & fridge were clean & convenient. Plenty of hot water for everyone to shower in the morning. The best thing about it is the family atmosphere and how quiet it is. No sounds of traffic to keep you up! The breakfast was great- lots to choose from and very clean. We love that it is so close to the attractions- about 10 minutes. Excellent experience. "Close to Asilomar Conference Grounds"
Pros: Large rooms with large closets/kitchenette area, ample parking/covered parking, close to Asilomar Conference Grounds, free continental breakfast with make-your-own waffles, comfortable beds. Very impressed with this place. It is a converted condo complex and the room was very clean and comfortable - very homely, with fireplace, fridge, and microwave. The grounds were well landscaped. My father and I stayed at thus hotel during the MotoGP race weekend at Laguna Seca. I booked a king room for Thursday through Monday. First, the bed was a queen-size. The hotel staff was adamant that the bed was a king, though I have a photo of the mattress label which clearly reads "queen". When we pressed the issue, they continued to insist that […] the room was a king room and tat there was nothing they could do as they were fully booked. 2 night lights and the hairdryer were broken in this room. The toilet did not flush properly, which the front desk said they'd address but they didn't. Overall, this room was definitely sub-standard, and the staff equally below par. "Quirky but a good deal"
This hotel was great. Beds comfy. Breakfast fine. Quiet neighborhood. Friendly and helpful staff. The only thing that was odd was the set-up of the rooms. You walk into the room with a king bed. It had an older TV and DVD player. The next room has a queen, the fridge and microwave. The bathroom is off of that room. This makes the set up great for parents […] with kids. Privacy at night is something often missing when traveling. The lights went off in the queen room around 10 and it got very dark, so I suggest you bring a night-light if you travel with kids. We finally did get them to stay on, but there was something funny about the energy saving set up in this room. It was not a deterrent. I do recommend this hotel. We were very happy with our stay.
