this was a nice hotel at a great location but it felt like a really good 2 star then a 4 star hotel. I have stayed in amsterdam before at a cheaper price and it was a 3 star hotel which was great!

Needless to say I was very disappointed with this hotel. I had read some good reviews and thought it would be a nice 4* hotel but this was definitely not the case. We arrived at around 5.30pm to a very nice member of staff, the lobby looked beautiful and a nice staircase. We were given a keycard for room 309 so we got in the lift and went to the 3rd floor and found the room. The room was so small I couldn't believe it. There was just enough room to walk around the twin beds; there was a table and 1 chair shoved in the corner but not comfortable to sit at because it was squeezed in between a dressing table and 1 of the beds. The wardrobe was literally 1/4 the size of an average wardrobe. It could just about fit 5 wooden hangers. The TV was ok, not too big but a nice plasma on the wall. The bathroom was very small also; the shower was in the very tiny bath, I didn't mind using it but the shower curtain was absolutely disgusting so I refused to pull that across. Also, for paying for a 4* hotel you get no toiletries.. although there is some soap stuck to the wall. I was really not impressed with this hotel at all. I booked this hotel to surprise my boyfriend for his birthday and I was very disappointed.. I didn't mind the room as we were rarely in it but for the price I paid I would have expected a lot more.. this is an average 3* hotel - infact I have stayed in nicer 3* hotels. There are nicer hotels around the Dam square, I won’t be back to this 1.

Perfect location, great historical value and quiet.

Our two week visit in Europe was to end in Amsterdam and I decided to stay in a little nicer room so I booked a suite with a King bed in the Die port Van Cleve. This booking gave us a room we could not believe. We were on the top floor in a corner room with views that were unbelievable. The room was very spacious with seating for 6 in the sitting area and a table with 6 chairs for dining. The bed was in a spacious area to the side almost not noticed from the living area. Although expensive the room seemed a bargain for the price. The location could not have been better, on the tram line and near central station you could get everywhere easily including museums, the flower market, canal tours, etc. We would definitely stay again.

Staff and room - very nice. No problems at all. Very clean, and bathroom is well lit and large, w/nice deep tub. Free internet connection in room. Location is great. Walk from Central Station or take a cab for a short ride if you have allot of luggage.

This hotel was a bit below my expectations. The room was extremely small and the bathroom smelled like sewage. Even worse, the light seems to have some sort of timer on it, so don't be surprised if all of a sudden your shower goes dark! The front desk did not seem worried about our complaints, and even forgot our wake up call (missed my flight). The one good point about this hotel is that the location is great! You can walk to pretty much anywhere within the city, including: Dam Square, Red light district, the Anne Frank house, and even the Van Gogh museum was no more than a 15 minute walk....you are even close to the Central station!

the desk clerk did over sleep on his working time and did not call us in the morning of checking out. than his english and dutch was not the greatest. also he had problems with the client before us and us to check us out, having our bill payed on our credit card. so if you stay in this hotel, set your alarm clock and pay your account/bill the night before your departure (especially if you pay by credit card)

Good looking hotel right in the centre of all you would want to see and do in Amsterdam.The hotel staff were efficient and informative and always ready to help.On the downside there is alot of noise at night from trams,traffic and people.The room was small with no opening window or Air/con,so very stuffy on warm June nights.Seems too highly rated as a 4*,has not got the facilities of other similar rated hotels.Our friends had a room to the back of hotel,which had an opening window but was very noisey at night.

Hotel was nice enough, room was acceptable. However, my stay was dotted with negative experiences. - We stayed in a smoking room, and on the first day apparently one cigarette was enough to cause the fire alarm to go off (silently mind you, so we didn't even realize). This led to a hotel staff member pounding on my locked door as I shouted "Just a minute!" and scrambled to get dressed after just having taken a shower. The staff member barged in without waiting for me to open the door, and I was barely able to cover myself with a towel. He then started yelling at me about not smoking, and opening the window (which was already open), and so on. Long story short, not a fun or seemingly acceptable experience, although its nice to know that the silent fire alarm at least has someone watching it in case it goes off. Maybe they could find a better place to put the smoke alarm than right over the bed as well. - There was no air conditioning, which was fine, but there was also no ceiling fan. We had a small portable fan that did not work. Upon reporting that it did not work, we were at least given a replacement fan that worked, and which was larger than the original broken fan. I was satisfied with that outcome. - There are no ice machines in this hotel (or vending machines, or mini-bars, or refrigerators). Apparently the only way to get ice is to call the restaurant downstairs and have them deliver it. Unfortunately, it is impossible to get in touch with the restaurant. When you push the button on the phone, it just rings and rings with no answer. I tried calling the receptionist first and having her transfer me, but that came to the same result. I called the receptionist a second time and she tried transferring me to a second number. Still no answer. I finally tried to just go downstairs and ask reception personally for ice. I was told that my request was noted and it would be forthcoming. It never came. - Similarly to the last point, there was one night when I wanted

the hotel is located right in the middle of amsterdam, you can walk from central station to the hotel (10 min walk). hotel staff very friendly and helpful with any needs, hotel clean, but rooms small (only complaint) other than that I loved it. There's a bus stiop right in front of the hotel and a grocery store a minute walk away.

We loved staying here. It was in such a perfect location--just a few blocks from the Anne Frank House and Madame Tussaud's, etc. The staff was very friendly, and our room was spacious and comfortable, with big windows we could open to hear the sounds of Amsterdam below. Also it's only a 10-minute walk from the Amsterdam Zentraal train station.

Although the location was SUPERB, the service was extremely poor....and costly. None of the staff were able to help with directions, logistics and in fact were often WRONG (therefore costing me additional money to make it right!) Over 90% of the guests had breakfast included in their hotel stay I DID NOT KNOW MINE WAS NOT included until I went the first morning. For the cost....it should have been included. My room my always smelling musty and the hallways were worse.

I needed to be in this area in walking distance to several contacts. For the price I paid, I expected more. The room was efficient, new bath, and had free internet access. Breakfast was not included. The location of the room itself was on a corner through the exit door next to a stairwell on the 5th floor, a little isolated.

this hotel was certainly not a proper 4 star hotel along the lines of how you and i would define it, not by a long stretch of the imagination. It was shabby, cramped, and had decor that would have been considered to be out of date in the 1960's. The staff were generally indifferent and the room was appalling. The whole experinence was so unpleasent that i will never forget it, nor repeat it. A disgrace.

For the price the room lacks a comfy feeling. Bathroom was great. Clean, OK. but too expensive. A hotel clerk was very inappropriate when she made a mistake about our booking. She was in the wrong and had no compassion about it. Had we not gone out of or way to prove her error, and was there another place to stay I would not have stayed. She and other staff lied about issues. That turned me off to ever stay there again. But this was a couple of people so can't hold against the whole hotel.

Great location - Friendly Staff

We spent one night at the hotel. It was very clean, the bath was nice. The area was close to all the sight-seeing. The hotel staff was extremely polite and helpful.

like many review complain about this hotel. for me it ok for the price , it easy go to anywhere in red light district or shopping and go out to eat ,5 min walk from the train station ,the room is nice and clean ,would stay here again next time trip.

I really enjoyed staying at this hotel. The location was perfect. It is right in the heart of historic Amsterdam and less than a ten minute walk to the Central Station. The tram stops right in front of the hotel, and makes it very convenient to travel around. Just several blocks down from the hotel is the Ann Frank House, and plenty of pubs and cafes surrounding the area. The hotel also has a very nice pub itself and the restraunt was very nice too. You will get more than your monies worth!

Stayed in the hotel for a weekend and have no complaints about the hotel, checked in very early and room was ready. Lift worked which helped as i was on crutches, Ideal location and very quiet at night, and i was there for a football match so lots of fans about. No view out of the small high window of dam square but cant complain really, All in all a very enjoyable stay and staff were most helpfull. Pricey food though so ate out for all meals.

Free wireless internet! Location is near the major Tram lines. To far to walk with luggage from Amsterdam Central but Tram or taxi will get you there. Maybe it used to be a four star hotel but room conditions were shabby. The location is convenient to walking and seeing alot of Amsterdam. Hotel desk staff was very friendly and helpful the time we stayed.

Great hotel, great location, great price.

EXCELLENT LOCATION, but,VERY NOISY. Bed was a bit soft & my wife said the hairdryer didn't work well (I said last b/c I think that's a bit insignif.,also, but, posted as an FYI to those who'd care). I'd recommend Only if you're looking for a cheap, Very Central location, but, wouldn't recommend for a long stay - Not a "bad" hotel: Very Central, but very noisy.

In a nutshell, this hotel is located in a very central area surrounded by shopping, eateries, coffeeshops, & transit. It is very old and could use a serious update but all in all it was a typical Dutch hotel room. A bit musty in the lobby & common areas. The staff was friendly & helpful. They were very accommodating about holding my luggage until the room was ready which was nice. After an unfortunate power failure in my room I was moved down a spiral staircase in the outer bowels of the hotel to a smoking room, however I was informed that it was only for smoking tobacco...Disappointing to say the least considering the city the hotel is in.

Die Port van Cleve Hotel is an old building with plenty of character. The staff were very friendly, helpful and courteous. The hotel is very centrally located with Dam Square literally less than two minutes walk away. This is very handy when you are visiting especially for the first time as all activity seems to gravitate towards Dam Square if you are unsure of your whereabouts when out and about. My only criticism would be the size of the room we stayed in, it was very small with no view at all. However, size of the room aside, I would recommend this hotel due to its location and friendly staff.

I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. The room was much more attractive than the pictures led me to expect. The location was a perfect starting point for sightseeing. The staff all spoke excellent English.

This hotel is in a very good location, literally across the road to Dam Square. Room was a good size as was the bathroom. Room was abit tired looking and the beds weren't that comfortable. We only had bed lamps for light. It was quite noisy in the late afternoon/night but seemed to quiet down eventually. Overall, not bad! Everything we needed for 1 night.

This hotel is in the perfect location for getting around the city. The room size is very typical for Europe. There was only a "soap/shampoo/conditioner" available instead of separate containers. And there were no individual room heating controls, so sometimes it was chilly in the room. But all in all, it was a good value.

we visited this hotel 2 years ago and the standards were much higher- attentive staff at check in, concierge, excellent restaurant service and attached bar open all day. hotel now dirty, tired in need of re furbishment- room that we stayed in very small, basic overlooking other rooms! bar closed- only open evening hours- restaurant o.k but expensive- limited menu.

We chose this hotel as it was the same company as the Artemis Hotel which we had stayed in Oct 08 and really enjoyed. Both hotels were nice & clean (I'm fussy too!). Die Port van Cleve Hotel was right next to Dam Square which suited us better than Artemis as that was a bit of a distance away. The price was not much more than you would pay for a 2* in the city so it was well worth it!!! Staff were friendly and the room was spacious, clean and private. Room service was of a good standard. Overall the hotel was really nice and we will return in future.....

Very pleasant hotel based just off Dam Square and therefore extremely close to all the main attractions, shopping streets and town centre. The room was well furnished and perfect for our needs, the hotel also had a bar and restaurant if you didn't want to venture out. I think this is an excellent base for a weekend in Amsterdam, but in terms of value for money I suspect you could find cheaper places to stay in the centre without losing too much in terms of comfort.

I arrived 7 hours before I was supposed to check in. When I asked if I could leave my baggage the gentleman behind the counter informed me that I could go right to my room it was ready. Hotel was in the middle of the Amsterdam horseshoe so you could walk to Central Station or the Leidesplien. I have stayed in Amsterdam many times and in my opinion for the price and location of this hotel you cant beat it.

I knew this Hotel from eating in the Restaurant on a previous trip to Amsterdam. The food was great so when I saw the hotel had rooms at an unbelievable price I was expecting something special. In life when something seems too good to be true it often is and so when I got to my room i was not surprised that the room was just about the smallest Ive ever stayed in. BUT it was clean and the hotel is well located. So the price charged was Fair.

I had no complaints about this hotel. The room was very nice with free wifi and a flat-screen TV. Not a whole lot of room to put our things but we found a place for our five large pieces of luggage. The staff was friendly enough and spoke english. The location is absolutely perfect being blocks from the centraal station, Dam Square, Ann Frank House, Red-light district, and on the trolley line. Took a train from the airport to Centraal and then a trolley to the hotel; quick, cheap, and easy.

The location was great, but that was all. Service was rude,room so small we could not walk around the bed, The room was not clean. Breakfast was very expensive, we thought it was included.

Great location, right in the center of town. Historic building. Good staff. Ok, that's the end of the good. Room was TINY, even by European standards. The carpet was filthy. Bathroom was tiny. Definitely not a 3+ star hotel. I'd recommend for backpackers or tourists who just need a bed to sleep in, not a room to relax in.

I want to know what it means superior double room. We got our room at 2 pm as schedule but I was surprise to see how small the room was we had a queen bed with a small space to walk around it ,and very cold after I went to inquire they desided to move us to a bigger room and it was all good after that . but I still want to know what it means a superior double room since my reservation said that I was getting a superior double room.

The hotel was just ok. it was in a slightly "seedy" location. it was on a main street and was noisy. there was no AC, no fridge, no safe in the room. breakfast was not included and the staff wasn't super helpful. the bell boys were not too interested in helping either and looked kind of "seedy" too. the staff was "hit-or-miss." One day i'd think the staff was terrible and not helpful but then the next shift of staff was great. normally Amsterdam is not very hot but the week we were there it was really hot. so since the hotel didn't have AC...it was baking hot all night. and you didn't want to open the windows because it was on a really bust street. however, i felt like Amsterdam was a noisy city in general. if it wasn't the cars passing by that made noise, it was the construction down the road, or the garbage trucks. the room was really small but we had good TV and PPV. it was conveniently located close to the train station and would probably be good for large groups.

hotel was in great location walkable to many attractions, room was clean, large private bathroom, room had balcony. staff was helpful. would stay again. :)

Given what we know about Amsterdam, this location is great for first time visitors who want to be close to the center. For those who know the city, it is much better to be in a smaller hotel in the 'canal belt' with more gracious service and nicer rooms. the rooms in this hotel are very basic and very small - clean,to be sure, and the history is valued but not worth the price

I was a little apprehensive about staying here after reading some of the reviews - but I can heartily recommend this hotel to anyone. The staff is incredibly helpful and our room was terrific. Location was excellent - I would definitely stay here again. We stayed here from May 18 - 20, 2008

THE HOTEL IS LOCATED IN A GREAT LOCATION AND IT WAS EASY TO GET AROUND AND SEE ALL THE SIGHTS. THE STAFF WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL FOR FAMILIES BUT FOR COUPLES AND BUSINESS TRAVELERS. OUR ROOM WAS SMALL BUT COMFORTABLE. THE LIGHTING IN THE ROOM WAS POOR TO SAY THE LEAST

We were given a room in the back of the hotel that was a half floor above the street level, and only accessible by a narrow set of stairs from the 1st level. When we checked in, it had only one towel and no soap or shampoo. It was quite loud and we could hear the people talking and walking on the floor above us. Fortunately we had brought a couple sets of ear plugs. I was a bit surprised to get a second hotel bill to cover additional taxes, but it wasn't too high. The cab driver that came to pick us up from the hotel not only lied to us about the pre-arranged fare which we agreed to in the hotel lobby, but he also threw our luggage out of the taxi and onto the street even after we paid him his marked up price without much of an argument. The hotel arranged for this driver so they do have some responsibilty.

The hotel is well maintained and comfortable with large rooms and bathroom especially for a European hotel. The staff were all very friendly and available particularly the front desk staff, the bartender Omar and the manager Rainier. The hotel is IDEALLY located to be right behind the square and central to everything. The bar is open late enough for nightcaps but is not at all rowdy or loud and the food there is solid. You can find less expensive hotels if you want but I will never stay anywhere else in Amsterdam.

In general, Die Port van Cleve Hotel was very clean and presentable. However, There was no A.C. in the room so I would not recommend it during the summer months. The hotel lacked certain comlimentary emnities, such as Soap, a bottle/wine opener, or an Iron. Overall, though it was a really nice and reputable hotel which I would stay at again.

We were supposed to be in non- smoking room, but room smelled of smoke. Desk personnel very helpful with restaurants, cabs etc. Our room was difficult to get to - down steep narrow stairs.

My husband and I were very pleased with our stay at the Die Port van Cleve. The staff was friendly and our room was clean, quiet, and comfortable. The location of the hotel is fabulous, as we could easily walk to Amsterdam's most popular sites. We would certainly stay there again the next time we're in Amsterdam.

great place to stay if you are heading to Amsterdam

Lovely hotel! Excellent location near the train station. Only 15 - 20 minute walk with suitcases. Central to Ann Frank house and great restaurants. Haesje Claes on Spuistraat has great food and service at not too expensive prices.

Die Port van Cleve is a great hotel for those visting Amsterdam. It is within walking distance of just about all the tourist attractions in the city, and has a tram stop right outside the entrance. The rooms are a bit on the small side, but of course this is commonplace in Europe. The lobby, corridors, and rooms were very clean, and quite modern for being in such an old building. The rooms even came with new flat panel televisions with full cable line-up. There is a daily breakfast buffet that was excellent, though a little on the pricey side at 17 Euro/person. Our room faced the backside of the hotel, which was signifcantly less busy than the front, so it was nice and quiet. Overall, the quality of the hotel and well as its unbeatable location made the experience great. I would certainly stay here again!

In general this hotel is great great location great staff it has lot of history and was very close to everything i walked to almost everything. I would stay here again. the downside was the housekeeping they come knocking pretty early but overall it was great!!!!!

Great location that is so convenient to all transportation and many attractions. Seems to be well run. Rooms are typical of so many European accomodations, that is to say...compact.

Great location for sightseeing, train station, canal trips

Die Port Van Cleve hotel is conveniently located near Amsterdam Centraal Station, and can be reached by a <10 minute walk with luggage. This makes it extremely accessible from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. It is extremely clean and has very comfortable rooms. The staff are friendly and helpful, even with odd requests at 2AM. Unfortunately I did suffer a charge for use of the mini-bar which was untouched. But they rectified the situation promptly with no confrontation. And in today's industry problem resolution earns far more points than an unblemished stay. Be sure to give a credit card without allocated funds for your deposit. They will place a hold of about $80 USD for room service, damages, etc. It clears within a day or two of your departure.

If you're traveling to Amsterdam for vacation, you could not ask for a better located hotel. Everything you'd want to see or wander to is walking distance or available on the tram right outside the door. Rooms are small, and somewhat dark, but service is excellent. Wi-Fi worked perfectly.

I think the hotel was nice and had alot to offer. However my room was small, and very difficult to get to( down narrow stairway with luggage) with no offer of assistance. My telephone didn't work the entire stay. It seemed that those rooms may have been reserved for internet deals.

The Hotel Room was less than clean with some very disgusting organic matter all over the walls that frankly looked like someone had been pleasuring themselves quite a bit. The carpet was also in similar condition, causing us both to wear shoes constantly while in the room. Strangely the hotel did not have comforters or bed coverings for a double bed. Overall just a disappointment.

The hotel location is great if you want to be close to the tourist sites and red light district. It was very easy to go site seeing around the city from the hotel, which were mosting walking distance. However, the room was very cramped and needed updating. The shower had good water pressure, and the tube was good sized. The downstairs restaurant was very nice and rated well. The was no air conditioning and the windows did not open-up very much. Overall, I would stay here again, due to the location/convience factor.

This was the most expensive hotel in our trip and the worst one. They gave us a horrible little room that had stains in the floor, all the furniture is deteriorated, the bathroom had mold and even some pubic hair. The room is super small no room to unpack and no air conditioning. It was like a hotel that was 4 star 30 years ago and now every thing is very deteriorated. It's really like 2 stars. The only good thing is the location. But for the money your going to pay you can find something better. I will never book in this hotel again.

Because you'll be living out of your suitcase. I can't speak for the other rooms in the hotel, but our room had no room to unpack. There was a small wardrobe, with room to hang some clothes and a single shelf (half taken up by the safe). The only drawer in the room was in the desk. I had to put a few days' clothes on the desk and stash my bags on top of the wardrobe. I'm not all negative, the staff was kind and knowledgeable, the room was well kept, and they had the best shower of my trip (which took me to Dublin and London). We picked it mostly for location and were not disappointed, centrally located by Dam Square, which is easy to find if you lose your bearings.

The hotel is perfectly situated in the city. It is a short walk from Central Station. The room was surprisingly large for most European standards. The hotel staff was friendly and was available. The other points of interest were a short walk from the hotel as well. In addition, a tram stop was located near the entrance.

We stayed overnight. The food, drink and accomodations were very nice. However, they had no reservations listed for us. They were very gracious and were able to provide us with a room.

Apart from the on again off again room service, this hotel ended up being a much better bargain than I had anticipated. Excellent sized room with very comfortable bed. Best part, in the heart of Amsterdam. Accessible by walking to everywhere you'd like to go in the city.

Very Central location, but the hotel in the old Heiniken brewery wasn't not at very impresive. Got a wrong room where someone looked very surprised when we locked ourseft into their room. We got a better room on the 6 floor. It looks as the rooms are very small on this hotel and they also seems very dark.

Un accueil très froid, d'ailleurs il y avait rarement quelqu'un à la réception. La chambre n'était pas prête à 17h alors on nous a relogés dans une chambre plus petite avec un immense vis-à-vis. Salle de bain incroyablement petite pour cette catégorie d'hôtel.

Dette hotellet ligger meget sentralt og til en ok pris. Fant ut at superior rom er et standard rom som kan være noe små. Hotellet er gammelt noe rommene bar preg av, men badet var reint og fint med hvite fliser. Det var badekar med dusj. Sengene var to enkle satt sammen til en dobbel. Men liker du store rom holder det ikke med superior.
