Bang for the buck, this is a nice place to stay in San Fran. Usually I stay in the financial district, but had an event near the ballpark and got an amazing deal at Hotel Whitcomb. You have relatively easy access to most of downtown, likewise the freeway is nearby. The room was small, but cozy. Super clean and if you dig older, historical hotels, you'll love this place. Neighborhood is questionable - welcome to the Tenderloin. Would definitely consider staying here again.

We are always in favor of staying at Historical hotels because of the history, charm and character. The Whitcomb looked very nice on line, but when you arrived it was a very different story. The carpets were old, the room smelled stale of old dirty carpet! The hotel could definitely use an update . In addition the check in clerk wasn't very helpful, etc. I dared to walk on the carpet without slippers or socks. The hotel is situated in the down town area (easy to get around). However, there is a HUGE homeless population. It was very sad to see and was very difficult to overcome. If you choose to stay at the Whitcomb because of the convenience of getting around, it's a good choice. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend this hotel nor would i stay there again.

The hotel is a normal older style hotel for the SF area. The biggest issue that I had was that the shower was all but un-usable. Plus there was abundant mold growth in the bathroom. Overall the staff and linens were clean.

Front lobby was clean and welcoming. I knew it was not going to be a good stay the moment we walked out of the lobby area. Hallway carpet was old and dirty. Elevators were mirrors were dirty and full of finger prints. The room was dirty, dusty, spider webs and spider crawling on ceiling. The bathroom toilet leaked and had that old lever to flush. Shower was dirty with mold and mold on walls. Bathroom tiles didn't even match. Was very disappointed and glad it was only for one night. Disappoin this was my parents first overnight stay in SF and this was their experience.

The staff was fabulous. Restaurant was excellent. Main floor beautiful and original. I was not thrilled with the neighborhood, but the hotel is indeed a gem. They said built over 100 years ago and many famous people have stayed here. Room was small and cozy, but nice. We definitely plan to return.

A refrigerator in the room would have been nice. Thought street noise would be bad but it wasn't. The 2nd night there was s very loud family next to us who couldn't speak without yelling, but that could happen anywhere. Hotel is old but well maintained.

The lobby is dirty more like filthy. The rooms are fine and clean, but the lobby is a disgrace. However the rooms don't even have a coffee maker. A better description of the the neighborhood would be to remove neighbor. It's on Market Street.

Hotel Whitcomb is a crown jewel in San Francisco. It's a huge historic property in a very convenient location. Some people will complain about the homeless sleeping on the streets - it's San Francisco so get use to it. The hotel is old but has plenty of charm! The rooms are extremely comfortable and the staff very friendly. Parking is a reasonable $32 per night.

Beautiful old hotel, the rooms were very clean and the beds extremely comfortable. The staff was nice, we didn't eat dinner in the restaurant because it's a limited menu and a little pricey, it just wasn't what we were looking for that night but it was very nice and intimate. Overall I would say it was a good experience and I would stay again. Quick note, valet parking is behind the hotel.

My family reserved two rooms at this hotel for $300 each a night. The bathrooms had mold on the tile around the shower and the toilet leaked from the back. We had to request additional towels (only 2 per room) and no wash cloths in either room. The next morning we found out that there was no coffee in the hotel and if you wanted a coffee pot it had to be requested. The neighborhood was awful. We walked across the street for coffee at the Burger King and were met by a security guard attempting to get homeless people out of the restaurant. Two doors down was a convenience store that we went into to get snacks. The store owner was screaming at a guy to pull up his shirt that he knew he was stealing. Sure enough when the guy lifted this shirt items fell out. The next morning we were walking to breakfast and the sanitation guys were hosing off the sidewalk from where the homeless had taken a restroom break on the sidewalk. I would never take my family back to this section of town and would certainly never recommend this hotel to anyone.

The hotel wireless was basically unusable, which causes an issue for those who must work while staying there. The old odor of the Hotel was unbearable as well. This place needs to be updated. The rugs had nasty stains in the hall. I asked for my bill to be emailed and never recieved.

The bathroom was not what was picutured on the internet for my room. It was a 4X4 shower stall with some mold and black hair stuck to the back wall. I question if it was cleaned between guests. The room had a bad odor. Those things were unfortunate because the room its self had great charm as far as decor. The rest of the room looked very clean. The linens were nice and the bed was comfortable.

The hotel is decent enough though definitely showing it's age. Unfortunately the neighborhood leaves a lot to be desired. The valet parking is very hard to find so make sure you know where it is before you set out.

This was our first visit to San Francisco. We stayed two nights and three days. The hotels outside is decent, however walking in the area felt unsafe. There were an excessive amount of homeless people in the area some even having evening sales of items on Market Street and adjacent streets. The Hotel Room was smaller then it appeared in the picture online. The room had significant visible mold in several places in the bathroom and near one of the beds. The beds were very uncomfortable as the mattresses had significant wear in the center. The hotel only provided one bath towel even though we had three registered adults. Upon asking for additional towels it took approximately an hour for them to be delivered. The next day they removed all dirty towels and left only one towel yet again. Upon check out the employee at the check out desk literally said I looked "p***** o**". His use of words was very unprofessional and uncalled for as I had not voiced any of my complaints yet. When he used these specific words I let him know about the visible mold and the towel issues. He indicated we should have complained, knowing a little about the services, I let him know it was the responsibility of the hotel staff to make sure the hotel was not in an unhealthy state. I also let him know I had requested the towels on two occasions even though the room had been booked for three guests. I have pictures of the visible mold in the bathroom and room near the bed.

This hotel is centrally located and is in good shape for an older building. Just be careful not to walk southwest on Market St. or you will end up in an area you don't want to be in. Literally in front of the hotel is a BART and underground stop - very convenient. Hotels.com provided a great rate, but when I checked out Whitcomb was billing me at their regular rate, more than double what I had confirmed with Hotels.com. Fortunately I could access the email confirmation and they fixed it. Just be ALERT wine checking out. Room itself was in great condition - why pay a small fortune when you are only going to sleep in a room. And in San Francisco you ought not to be hanging out in a hotel room.

For an older hotel that is a historic land mark, I really enjoyed my stay, the only thing I would suggest is get new mattresses, every thing else was great. I had a really good time.

Good location for BART and shopping. Room was noisy, fan in bathroom was deafening, only one switch so couldn't not use it. Bad TV reception and the heat or a/c could either be on or off - no temperature control. Took a while to find the extra outlets. No room service menu that I could find, nor TV channel guide. For one night, it's fine. I would not recommend for a longer stay or for business. Larry the bellman is awesome, however. He gets the extra rating.

Located right on Market street. Easy access to F line, transportation to Union Square (shopping) and to the Piers (tourist attractions). Room was very clean. Wish there was a coffee maker in room. Room was pretty small, but I think that's to be expected in San Francisco. Hotel lobby & halls could really use an update though. Halls were especially creepy.

Not a great stay for a few reasons: The shower was cold (took an exceedingly long time for the temperature to be palatable); I asked for change for a $20 and was told, "We don't do that", which was a little unsettling; the neighborhood is not great (at all); and it's grimy - oh, and it seems to be under construction. On the upside - it's cheaper than others.

Lots of boutiquey character, which is nice. But the neighborhood isn't the best, and there were two issues with the room: 1) the mattress was well past its prime, and 2) we were given a room with an adjoining door to another room, and our neighbors liked to argue well into the night.

Great location: at the top of the steps to the MUNI; The Market on Market is a great upscale grocery with prepared food options. Room was spacious and clean. Only 2 of 4 elevators were working during our stay which made comings and goings around bus groups slow. We will definitely look check availability at future stays.

We had our honeymoon here and the hotel was very nice. The only complaints that I had was that the rooms were very small and not made for family stay. And the shower pressure was not very good. But everything was clean and was comfortable.

We were quite disappointed in the actual hotel. The pictures of your hotel and some of the claims highlighted in your web site were not what we experienced in reality. We understand the hotel is an older hotel, but there were a number of deficiencies that could have been remedied to make our stay more enjoyable: First, the hotel bath accessories were limited. No additional rolls of toilet paper available in the rest room. One face cloth was left in our room for three people. That morning, we approached the maid service and they told us we had to wait until later in the day to get additional ones so two of us had to use hand towels for face cloths. The other issue was there was no bar in the tub area to assist one getting out of the shower/tub. Wall paper had peeled back from the wall in the shower area, leaving the wall exposed. There was also a strange hum that came from the shower head while showering. The room did not have adequate lightning. It would have been good to have a luggage rack to place luggage on while unpacking. In spite of the numerous deficiencies, various hotel staff, mainly the bell hops were congenial and pleasant. The first day of our stay, the concierge person continued to be distracted by text messages on her cell phone as we queried her about transportation in the city. On the second day of our stay, there was a very helpful gentleman at the concierge desk who gave us more thorough transit information.

Hotel room was very clean. Hotel itself is in a nice location on Market St. We had issues with our stay. First, our room was not available upon our arrival, but we were upgraded to a suite at no additional cost. Then the rollaway bed we had requested was deemed unavailable after waiting around for it for an hour and a half. We were just given an extra pillow and blanket. We spoke to the hotel manager in the morning and he apologized for the inconvenience and credited back some of the cost of the room. Overall, it wasn't the most pleasant experince for my family, but the staff made every effort to make things right.

The room was very small. It was difficult to move around the room and bathroom. There was built up dust that had been undisturbed for far too long. The paint job could use a fresh coat.

The hotel was fine could use some updating. Some odd issues - like the space was tight and they had this huge chair for the desk - that didn't fit under the desk - so we had them take it away. The biggest problem was the neighborhood. OK during the day - horrible the night! Nice that is was on the Bart, but again wouldn't go out in the neighborhood after dark. The staff were nice and helpful.

This hotel is falling apart, the door handle are falling off the doors. The shower have water reducer that reduce the shower water so much that you leave the shower feeling barely wet. I asked the front desk to fix the shower, they had the shower head changed but the reduced water flow stayed the same. I believe this is a water saving tactic that drastically reduce that comfort of guests. The parking is $35 per day time the number of night stay. I thought this was high but it is common in San Francisco. The only issue I had is that if I return my rental car early the parking fee still carried through out the total stay. I found this to be dishonest and really bothered me. I have stayed at budget hotels that have better amenities than the Hotel Whitcomb.

Loved the hotel. It was a beautiful old hotel and very comfortable. The neighborhood is a little sketchy but other than that the stay was great.

Hotel Whitcomb is on a street full of homeless people. The concierge was useless. The bathroom in our room looked like it hadn't been updated since 1907. The tub didn't drain properly and filled with water while taking a shower. I called down for more towels because we had 4 people in our room and they only wanted to give us 2 more. I asked for a 3rd and they acted like I just asked for their first born child's blood. When checking out we asked to have the parking fee ($40 a day!!!) And the room charge on 2 separate credit cards and Burney (the guy working the front desk) began to tell me it took to much time to do that. When I said I didn't care how long it took. He asked for the card and my ID. He slammed them both on the counter and acted like I was being difficult. Worst experience ever at a hotel. I would never go back or recommend this hotel.
