"Reasonable Hotel for Location"
Needed a place to crash on 4th of July after a day in San Francisco and stayed here based on price and location. The rooms are fairly well appointed although obviously dated. The hotel and room were clean and they keep the lobby fairly well put together despite the high traffic. If you're not familiar with the area, this hotel is close to Union Square […] but is on the UN/civic center side and has fairly high traffic of homeless/unsavory people out front. The proximity to the BART station is very nice though and you're within walking distance of Union Square, the mall, and a number of nice places south of market. Will stay here again if in a pinch. "a PRIDE full hotel"
A convenient hotel Clean. Extremely friendly staff in the middle of chaotic situations. Looking forward to staying here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We had a great stay. This is a historical hotel with a great history which made it fun. We really enjoyed the vibe of the place. Our check in experience wasn't as great. We were there for SF Pride and when we arrived to park our car for valet, it was clear the hotel wasn't expecting such an influx of people. We were stuck in the alley way for at least […] 20 minutes. Another not so great moment was the elevators. Very slow. Luckily we were on the 4th floor so we took the stairs. Great location. BART and MUNI are right outside the front door. There's also a Starbucks in the lobby and a great bar/restaurant in the lobby. It's pricey but we heard the diner across the street (Sam's) is a great deal. We didn't try it, but maybe next time. I'll stay here again for Pride, but will plan to check in earlier and bring more patience! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Location for PRIDE!!"
Keep in mind this is a historic hotel. We enjoyed the pleasant staff and their willingness to keep us happy! We will definitely be back, it served its purpose as a nice little room right in the middle of the pride events. We walked across the street both days and were right in the festivities! B/R was a little funky as far as needing some modern upgrades […] but it was clean and all for under 260 with parking for the two of us! Good night of sleep too, we were at the end of the hall so that helps. Parking staff was great too, they were in action with the floods of people around! Thank you Hotel Whitcomb! "Great location for 2014 Gay Pride parade"
The only serious complaint I have is that a friend had booked me for a single room for my first night's stay and I was informed that none were available so I had to pay for a double double room which I didn't need until the second night. Other complaints are minor: the wallpaper starting to peel in bathroom and bathroom faucet had a steady drip. Not […] good in our drought. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Know before you go"
As someone else stated - excellent location, but know it is deep in the Tenderloin/SOMA area, and can be very intimidating. Within walking distance of BART and numerous venues. It is also an old hotel - an old hotel, with all the quirks of being old. Don't expect glamour. If you can handle a class B hotel, then go for it. Modern amenities are not t […] here. Hotel Whitcomb is beautiful. I love the old architecture throughout the building. It is walking distance from Union Station, and with the bart entrance directly outside the door, it makes using public transportation so easy! The staff is excellent, particularly conceirge. They told us how to get anywhere we wanted to go, gave excellent recommendations, […] and even discount coupons for places. We arrived much earlier than anticipated, and they got us in our room almost 3 hours early, with no extra fees, and were as sweet as could be about it. My only complaint (which isn't even a complaint) is that the room itself was extremely small. But considering we just slept in it, it didn't make a difference at all. We would absolutely go back. We were very satisfied with our room and would stay there again. It was also very quiet.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Overall, Hotel Whitcomb was great. There were some parking issues when we were trying to leave- the attendant couldn't find our car, and it was difficult to communicate with him because he didn't really understand what we were saying. But the hotel itself was in a great location, it was clean, the staff was nice and helpful. It's small and old, but […] that's to be completely expected from a historic hotel! Overall good stay! "2 week stay"
Hotel has charm and rooms are clean. I stayed here two week for work as it was within proximity of my meetings. So the Good: right at footsteps of Bart transit so you can get around easily, across the street from City hall and there are local events like local produce markets etc... Also you are close to Union square, Westfield Mall and Moscone (15 […] minute walk) The bad: Neighborhood is full of homeless folks (Hotel is in the tenderloin district where the vast majority of homeless folks live). Not too many requests for money but it is a sad scene. If you have kids then you may want to shield them from this due to some of the folks having mental disorders- yelling and swearing. Also no good options on restaurants (a Subway and Burger King across the street) but need to walk 10 minutes towards Union Square. So bottom line is Hotel and proximity to public transportation is good but neighborhood is not so great. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful historic hotel, great service"
We were a little worried about this hotel because if some if the reviews about the neighborhood, until we saw that the entire downtown area has a homeless problem so I'm sure all the downtown hotels will be the same. However, I found that I never felt unsafe, the staff was consistently helpful and friendly, they cared about my family. They cared about […] our stay. I was amazed at how well this hotel managed to have updated facilities while still maintaining that historic old world feel. I highly recommend them. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful old hotel!"
This was a beautiful old hotel with charming and comfortable rooms, and the price was right too. The area that it's in has a some homeless people, but it's a relatively safe area.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Decent hotel, bad location"
The hotel itself is pretty old and some of the architecture is pretty cool. The hallways and rooms are very dark. Being an old hotel the lighting is very poor. You can easily tell the age of the hotel by the bathrooms - pink/salmon tile on the walls, very basic amenities. I would not recommend this hotel for one reason - the location. I'm a male and […] I didn't feel safe at night. There were lots of homeless and mentally challenged individuals surrounding the hotel yelling at eachother, asking for money. It just made you feel very uneasy. Plus, the streets smelled like urine b/c of all the homeless people sleeping on the street. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Different service during the day"
The Hotel location is great. It is pretty old hotel, a renovation is required. The price is good considering SF hotel prices. The front desk Colombian guy was pretty rude. He barely talked with me during my check in. As I had two different reservations, next day I talked with him to make sure I was OK. Again without look at me he said: YES. At 03:00 […] PM I received a call in my cell phone asking me to leave the hotel. The afternoon staff was complete different. Roland was very polite and accommodative. Nice, old, historic hotel. Well maintained and comfortable. Rooms rather small, but typical of many old hotels. Immediate neighborhood full of homeless (even more than S.F. in general), so walk with someone for your safety and comfort.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"convenient location, run-down hotel"
This historic hotel is fairly worn down but was adequate for my business trip. The BART station is right in front, which is very convenient. The location is central to many SF destinations. Neighborhood is also run-down but felt safe. Bed was comfortable, shower was hot, and room was quiet.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Convenient location, great ambiance, abrupt staff"
Rooms where clean and beds comfy. I would definitely stay here again. I parked my car at the back of the hotel for $35, which I thought reasonable for San Fran. Valet was super helpful. My only complain was the abrupt and unhelpful female on the reception desk.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Cool, older hotel; bad location."
The hotel itself was very nice. It was an older "historical" hotel and had some really cool features such as the antique elevator doors. Although the building was old, it was well maintained and had new furniture, carpet, etc. The location was not very good though. The street in front of the hotel had lots of homeless people roaming the street.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Very satisfactory as to convenience and location. The only thing I missed was washcloths in the bathroom. I don't expect them in Europe, but assume they're available in U.S. hotels therefore I don't travel with my own.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I stayed at hotel Whitcomb when I came to San Francisco and I was very impressed with the classic style hotel they had. The interior decoration was like from the classic movies yet the appliance and furniture was up to date. The staff was excellent, they answered any questions and was very knowledgeable. The morning I stayed there, there was construction […] outside and it was pretty noisy, however the manager for guest services was able to quickly accommodate the noise by getting us a different room. Even though it wasn't their fault they went out of their way for us to be comfortable in their hotel. I highly recommend this hotel if your going to be near down town San Francisco. "The Hotel Sh*tcomb... Ok, Maybe That's Too Harsh"
Yes the hotel is on the Historic Register. Yes the room has a bed, tv, desk and shower. Yes, Market Street is as bad as it's ever been. Yes, you will walk by 500 or more homeless people to and from the hotel. Yes there will be profanity screamed on the streets. Yes you will probably witness a fight or two. Yes the hotel is inexpensive by SF standards. […] Yes the hotel has a Starbucks. Yes the hotel is close to public trans... that is all. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Overall the Whitcomb met my overnight needs for a place to sleep after taking in a Giants game. However there were a couple hiccups...the front desk agent did not greet me or welcome me but instead simply said, "ID and credit card please". I used to work resort hospitality and this was pretty suprising. Meet and greet is a basic hospitality principle. […] Then we were shown to an occupied room, OOOPS!!! The bellhop, Angel, was delightful given the uncomfortable circumstances. However, the front desk did not attempt to assure me of compensation for this uncomfortable and intrusive experience, I had to follow up with a manager to get it taken care of. In the end I was credited half my room cost but it was just awful to walk in on someone else's private space. There were prescription pill bottles...etc. Not a wonderful experience to say the least. "Great location, poor service"
The location of the hotel is ideal and close to everything. But the service from the staff was poor. We traveled with a baby and had 5 pieces of luggage, the hotel has no self-park, so you must leave the car at valet through the hotel's back entrance. Because the hotel is old and has no ramp at that entrance, you have to walk up some stairs to get to […] the lobby. After leaving the car with the valet guy, no one helped us with our luggage even though they saw we had a baby with us (the hotel was not busy and there were no other guests around). We had to make several trips back and forth to get all our stuff. We are a young couple so we had no problem with this, but other travelers should know they might encounter this lack of service when checking in. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

When we arrived, the lobby had that historic feel which was great. When we got into the room, the lighting was not great. "Convienent was the only plus!"
Convienent because a wedding reception was held in a restaurant at the hotel.Very nice upscale hotel. Very expensive. Housekeeping great! Reservations service not good. Rates are either pre-paid or pay now. They do not fully explain their procedure and policy. And then even though it was prepaid, the party had to show their ID/credit card but if it […] wasn't the same as the person that made the reservations, they refused to let them check in until they showed them the credit card that was used to pre-pay. WTH? Then there were a group of us with the same last name. Even when we told them our entire name they charged it to another person in our party. No thanks. "Convenient to BART and downtown"
The hotel has wonderful potential, but the staff were not very forthcoming or helpful. THE ROOM: The room was nice, except that the air conditioner was so loud, I couldn't sleep with it on. Also, the fan in the bathroom needed maintenance. There was a terrible rust stain in the corner of the bathtub. AMMENITIES: The hotel bar closed very early and they […] kicked us out. This was especially annoying, because there was no other place to congregate and have a good discussion in the hotel. We would have had to leave the hotel and go to a noisy bar in some other location away from the hotel. QUALITY OF SERVICE: There was a fellow in the lobby ("floor manager"???) who, when I asked to check my bag for the morning I checked out, said that I would have to wait for the bellman (who was off doing something for quite some time). When I asked the "floor manager" if he would check my bag, he refused. The person at the front desk wouldn't do it either. This is NOT what good customer service is about. TRANSPORTATION: The one really nice perk is that the BART station is right in front of the door to the hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"location location location!"
Arrived early for the giants game and the reception held our bags and assured us they would be safe and offered if they needed to call for transportation. The muni/bart entrance are 200 feet from the hotel front door. The F line bus stop is 400 feet away from the hotel door and a 10 minute straight shot to the ferry bldg and wharf. I have stayed here […] several times because of the public transit options. And a lot cheaper than parking your car for $35 a night. "Balancing Act in Downtown SF"
I would stay at Hotel Whitcomb again, but it is not for everyone. It is an old hotel that has dark hallways and slow elevators. The phone did not work and the water pressure was very low. Just out the door on Market there are many homeless people - more than a person can help with a buck here or there. On the other hand, the hotel is affordable, clean […] and quiet. It is close to BART and to SF Symphony Hall. The restaurant is decent. Depending on what you want this place may or may not be for you. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
