"Bring ear plugs."
The hotel is on the edge of the Tenderloin so depending on where you are going within the city, you may have to deal with some unsavory characters and acts but we were never bothered. The BART/MUNI is right in front so you can access any location within the city. We still walked everywhere but public transportation is very easy. The staff were nice […] and the concierge gave us some good advice. Our issue with the hotel was how thin the walls are and how noise travels within the rooms. I felt like the neighboring patrons were also in our room. DO NOT HAVE PRIVATE CONVERSATIONS at this place because they will not be private. You hear everything. From the person trying to set up a Google Meet-up (I heard the entire conversations from him and the people on the computer), to the gentlemen on the other side of our room who was obviously very ill and coughed and snored all night. It sounded like we were sharing a bed with the sick man. At one point, a woman was in one of the rooms with her baby and I swear I heard the child feeding. We had another couple who were amorous which is lovely for them but not what you want to hear at 3am. Needless to say, the lack of sleep from all the noises was unfortunate. I would stay here if I had to but it would not be my first choice. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Whitcomb via hotels.com"
Terrible hotel. Because I booked via hotels.com they gave me a room off of the fire escape. I had to walk out a fire door into the fire exit and on the stairwell was a door to my room. This was at the back of the hotel. Windows didn't work, toilet seat was painted on with peeling paint that was not comfortable. When asked to move as they had plenty […] of other rooms they refused because of how I booked. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The Hotel Whitcomb is a comfortable hotel located within walking distance of the Opera and Symphony. The Orpheum theater is across the street. The staff is very helpful and efficient.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Pictures can be deceiving"
The hotel is dark and my room was shabby. Area surrounding hotel is sketchy at best. Room was adequate but nothing like pictures on website. I really felt duped for the price I paid. Would not recommed nor stay at again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"In very bad neighborhood"
There is a reason that this hotel is cheaper than others in SF - it is on the edge of a bad neighborhood and it's not clean. I'm from a big city and I didn't feel safe walking around that area at night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"close to Union Square"
Very satisfied with my stay. My room was clean and the service prompt. Elevators are really slow. They should provide more outlets, or make sure to have extension cord in the room so one can charge computer and phone without unplugging a lamp. Starbucks is conveniently located right next to hotel. The location is great; it takes about 10 to 15 minutes […] to Union Square and shopping malls, and one walks straight there on Market street. There are a lot of homeless on the street and that can feel a bit uncomfortable, especially when it gets dark. Overall, I have enjoyed my stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Better than expected"
Although check-in was slow, the staff was attentive. It was super convenient to local public transportation; entrance to the muni and BART just outside the front door. Yes, there were a few homeless people around, but we saw them all over San Francisco, not just in the hotel area.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Horrible location. Not worth the cost."
We stayed at the hotel because our friend who had previously lived in the area selected it.The bathroom was dirty, the room was tiny and it looked out directly onto the buildings HVAC units. The showers tile grout was falling out. I didnt love the area, this being my first time in SF I felt unsafe walking to and from the hotel at night. The hotel did […] hold our bags for us after we checked out which was nice. The bellhop said that he would get a cab for us to the airport and it was the best way to get there because the Bart was not running (we later found out it was). He quoted us a fair for the cab he hailed us which turned out to be a private livery and was MUCH more than quoted. I would recommend you find other hotel options and that I would never stay here again...after leaving the hotel I realized I'd left a small box in the room. I called on the day we checked out and the last 3 days since and am always repeatedly transferred (rudely and abruptly) to a woman in housekeeping who promises to call me back and never does. I've just spoken to her for the 5th time. I'm sure that what I unfortunately left is no longer there, i'm also not holding my breathe that i'll actually hear back from them. I cannot fault the hotel on location, since i relied on friends to select the hotel...if you're visiting SF for the first time try looking at hotels that are NOT on Market and are closer to Nob Hill, North Beach/Fishermans Wharf or the Ferry Building. "Would stay again"
Beautiful Hotel lobby. Room was small but bed was very comfortable. Friendly staff. Good LocationGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Hotel was ok. Small rooms and tiny bathrooms. However it is an historical hotel so did not expect large luxury rooms. Beds were very comfortable. Air conditioning was poor. Unable to cool room for comfort. Area around hotel was poor. Lots of homeless (Mission next block), homeless asking for needles, drinks and money was unnerving. However walk a few […] blocks and it was nice areas to walk around. Area's around hotel seemed dirty and unoccupied. Disappointed as SF use to be a great city to visit. This trip - not so much. "Hotel staff over worked, Hotel in poor condition"
I'm very sorry to report that this hotel is in desperate need of renovation. There are four elevators, but they are completely inadequate to service the needs of the building (very small, and painfully slow). I, like many other guests, resorted to using the stairs. Which is good exercise, but walking seven flights was not on the top of my list of things […] to do after a long day. The room was in horribly poor condition. The tile was in such bad condition that it had been painted over, which obviously peals off over time. The water pipes were rattling all hours of the night. This hotel is centrally located, but unfortunately it has become a favorite hang out of people asking for money. There is real danger both day and night. Hang on to your valuables! The hotel staff is pleasant, but horribly overworked. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Overall, satisfied with hotel room, BUT, disappointed that Superior King bed room (that was requested & prepaid) was not available.on registering. "close to BART and hobo heaven"
Good value given it is San Francisco but Hotel is old but clean. I was amazed by the number homeless people on the streets outside the door and those who can afford a cup of coffee in the attached Starbucks. Stayed here for one night and the staff was very friendly.. Harvey and Kazi made an effort to ensure I stayed in their wonderful king room. the room was spacious and comfortable. The hotel is "old" but it has a nice historic old san Francisco vibe. You are on market street so obviously there is the grit and homelessness of san Francisco ..if you didn't […] know this already and aren't prepared then maybe stay in napa haha but the hotel is safe they have a nightwatchman and the location is still close enough to 5th street to enjoy the mall and downtown. "Reasonable value for the price paid"
The service of the staff and amenities were very good. The hotel had most if not all the features I wanted: location, fitness room etc. However it is an old hotel, carpeted wall to wall and my allergy to dust made my stay uncomfortable at times. Fortunately I carried or was able to buy medication which made my symptoms more tolerable. The ductwork (especially […] in the fitness room) needs cleaning and the carpeting, although satisfactory in appearance, should probably be replaced or cleaned more often. "Not great for business travel. Unsafe neighborhood"
I would not recommend this hotel. Security was good but the neighborhood was not good. Lobby needs updating. Poor value for the money. Update the hotel lobby. The furniture of the lobby should be reupholstered, they had very little cushioning. When I first entered the lobby, I was rethinking my decision of staying in the hotel. The check in process took VERY long. There were several guests in line with four desk clerks behind the counter with only ONE waiting on guests. The bathroom was tiny! Great Staff, beautiful old historic hotel. But what a dangerous place to be at night. A beautiful historical hotel is kept clean and fairly comfortable, but disappointingly neglected by the staff's arrogance and unprofessional behavior. The phone in the room was not working, most likely completely disconnected. There is no accessible public bathroom in the hotel lobby and very few sitting areas for the guests. The information desk is […] almost always empty, bellboys are inaccessible and only on call and wait. There is no a quick check out even if the stay was already paid. The hotel's restaurant is open only for a limited times during the days, the Starbucks on the site is an only place to get refreshments, since the nearby coffee shops are shabby and have a very little to offer. The area is fairly safe but occupied by many transients day and night. Hotel's elevators are slow and the hallways empty and a bit creepy if one has to walk on the long narrow hallway to the room located on the back. In general, he hotel plus is the central location, the taxicabs parking on the front of the hotel, the easy access to the Bart and its well cleaned rooms. Its rating as a four stars hotel and its room prices are far too high comparing to other four stars hotels in the area that offer much more. Here, one pays for the sentiment to its historical past. "The only thing we did not liked"
The only thing we did not liked was that they do not let us know when we registered at the hotel that the parking was $40 per night. That was unbelievable, because it is more than the amount we paid for rental of the car. I think they should let the customers know ahead of time so clients could be prepared for that big charge.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful hotel with character, bad part of town"
Although I booked a queen room, the hotel staff told me when I checked-in they didn't have any more available. But the employee went to the back to talk to a manager and came back out with keys to my queen bed room. Overall, I really enjoyed the hotel. It's beautiful, and quite unique. Lots of character in the architecture, and breathtaking lobby. A […] lot of history (served as an old city hall after the fire), which is interesting. Only bad thing is the tired elevators take a while, but that gives you more chance to enjoy the beautiful surroundings! Even though it's in a bad part of downtown, there's a bus stop less than a block away, and we didn't have any problems. Valet was very helpful when we needed to get something out of the car and load our luggage up as well the day we left. They let us keep our car there until 6pm without an extra day's charge.
