The hotel is on a main street in a central location near Piccadilly Gardens, the shopping area and the main railway station. It is a large hotel with a grand Victorian facade. There is a wonderful grand stairwell and it offers a feeling of old world fading grandeur. It has a couple of bars independent to the hotel on the ground floor. The room was an economy non smoking room on the 5th floor with no breakfast. The good points were, the location, the size of room, the price, tea making facilities, well furnished refurbished room, grand stairwell, public areas and nice helpful staff. The bad points was the room had a ceiling window so no direct view, there was some slight backup ground noise from either the hotel bars on the ground floor or nearby but it did not keep me awake. Neither good or bad points, there was a bouncer on the he door at night to check you door keys and Buffet breakfast was £10. Overall I would book again as it was excellent value, good location and good size room. I would try and book the 5th or 6th floor at weekends and ask for an outside facing room (but then I might get more noise) or maybe a room not facing the front.

on approach the britannia hotel looks appealing, sadly upon entering the foyer, it is apparent that this hotel is in quite severe need of modernisation. the concierge was superb warm friendly and very helpful. however that was the best of the hotel, as for the room, one of the wardrobe doors was hanging off (i had to fix it myself!) and the matress was about 2 inches thick some of the tiles were loose in the bathroom. but apart from that it was fine! (not worth what i paid for the room by a country mile!) at least the 11am check out time was reasonable!

The television was somewhat dated and could only receive the terrestrial channels....no BBC News 24 or Sky News. Breakfast is excellent, a choice of continental or full English, served hot and by pleasant and helpful personnel. Check in/out very quick and efficient. I would stay here again as I have done in the past.

Also we was supprised the see the fire alarm didn't have any batteries in - surely this is against the law? And finally the shower kept getting hot & cold. Please - unless you want one of the worst and most lowgrade experiences of your life - do not stay at The Brittania in Manchester. Old unkept rooms, dirty linens, comforters with holes in them, dirty carpets, thin windows, moldy plumbing, no irons in the rooms. It was the worst hotel that I have ever stayed in during my adult life. It reminded me of a hostel, just bigger with the entire room to myself. Spend a few extra dollars for a decent, clean room in a better neighborhood away from tramps and drunks. While the staff was pleasant and accommodating, it just could not make up for the poor state of this hotel that hit its prime in the early 1980's and has yet to be renovated since...

After arriving in Manchester on a 3 hour delayed flight, we got to the Britannia at 10pm. The foyer was the ONLY impressive thing. We checked in, the 'gentleman' on reception spoke faster than the callers at Royal Ascot. I asked about the restaurant as we were hungry, but it had closed. He did say that room service was 24 hours. He gave us a swipe card for the door and a keycard with the room details on it, stamped with a red stamp. I was tired at the time and thought nothing of it. When we had got to the room and unpacked, showered (btw the water was cold even on the hottest setting) etc, we ordered room service; a 9in pizza. ?6 plus ?3 tray service! Now I knew that I didn't have much cash, so I told the guy who delivered it (in a pizza box!!!) to room charge it, showing him the keycard. Guess What?! Red stamp = no room charge, room charge is a blue stamp! So I found some cash and paid him. We checked in the hotel directory, found that check out was 11am, so was looking forward to a sleep in. I did think back and it was strange that reception didn't ask for a card imprint for room charge. Anyhow, the pizza was ok, but not worth ?9. Did I mention a sleep-in? Ha ha ha! Housekeeping woke us with knocking on the door... at 8:30 am!!!! Now, I work in hospitality and I know that House keeping wait until after check-out or at least until after breakfast to go through and do a room clear. Well we checked out at ten thirty and it will be a looong while before we check back in.

My room was upgraded without me asking, and the quality of the fittings and the cleanliness were excellent. The shower was not the best, but was adequate. The restaurant, Jenny's, was value for money, as much good food as you could want. Two drawbacks, i) the TV was crackly and limited to a very few channels, and ii) the noise of traffic could be heard even on this 5th floor. The main advantage for me is Britannia's location. It is on the doorstep of Chinatown, Canal St & the main city centre shopping hub (Arndale Centre) is a 10minute walk. The hotel is almost 'gothic grand' style with an imposing staircase on entrance & the large chandelier above it. The rooms I have stayed in vary from large (executive - upto 4 single beds) to very small (standard - a double bed & not much room for anything else). The cost does not vary in proportion. The rooms themselves are quite 'tired' & could do with a revamp. The bars are good - serviced by friendly staff. The en suite is adequate. The breakfast is a very good quality & priced competitively.
