I travel for business and it's nice to stay in a place that's more homelike. The staff is very welcoming and the environment is well, cozy. It also provides a centralized location for calling on local businesses.

The hotel is a older hotel in a quiet neighbourhood. The service off the personell is good and the rooms are good. Everything is clean and is looking good. How ever they need a new cook that knows what he is doing. The dinner was not verry good the fish and chips wher as hard as a rock. A continental breakfest is something different than what they serve. Bagels buns and jelly is abouth what you get. No eggs bacon ore something like that. The hotel is a little overpriced for what they offer.

Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Nov 6, 2008
One would think that an Inn registered as an historical landmark would make more of that fact. The room and bed were comfortable and the bath amenities excellent; however, there did not seem to be a superior attention to detail overall -- e.g. cleanliness of the carpeting and in the hallways, dying flowers on the breakfast table, cobwebs when I opened a window. I would not recommend the Inn to families with children; however, for its price point and convenience, I might consider it again.

Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Sep 4, 2008
The hotel is outstanding; love the irish pub attached to it. Its a quick walk to the subway line. The rooms are clean and comfortable. However, my two gripes is that the rooms lack data hookups (free wireless though) and the parking situation. Clayton has notoriously bad parking; the hotel has it's own lot but they don't tell you up front that it's a $17.00 a night charge to park there. In my opinion you already pay for the room, parking should be free.

Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 29, 2008
Nice hotel but the staff is more than incompetent. Communication between staff members and guests is horrible. We were charged for services we didn't even use and it was not communicated to us that we would be charged regardless if we used the service or not. We were hoping for a nice stay in a quaint inn but definitely not the case here. There are lots of lodging choices in the Clayton area that will meet or exceed your expectations without the additional headache of poor customer service.

Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 27, 2008
The appearance of the hotel was adorable. Tudor-style building and decor right in the heart of the trendy, upscale Clayton, MO. The quality of service was less than what I expected. There is only 1 person working the reception desk at all times, which made the checking in and out process a huge hassle. My husband and I were disappointed by the trendy bar/restaurant located in the hotel. It was raining, so after dining out, we were looking forward to just hanging out at the bar in the hotel. Upon entering the bar we found not one person in the whole place - patron or bartender. After about 15 minutes, we had to go search for someone to help us. Also, the $17/night valet parking is not optional, as there is no legal parking on the street near the hotel, nor other parking options available.

This hotel was pretty good for the price (of course it was cheaper booking through here than straight through the hotel!) though it was sort of tucked into a bunch of huge surrounding buildings. I thought the valet was pretty exorbitant-- it cost us $17 to park overnight. Also, the "complimentary breakfast" was cold cereal and a couple of stray muffins. The hotel had a cute atmosphere and lots of history. Overall, it was a nice little getaway.

Hotel room was not particularly clean, no desk, couch fabric was worn and torn, internet service was intermittent and unreliable, one phone in the room on a dresser with a long cord, lighting was poorly placed, TV stations hard to access using existing menu system. Hotel has the possibility of being charming if maintenance and internte issues are addressed.

Reviewed by PH of Chicago on Jan 30, 2008
I was very pleased with the room. We were on the 3rd floor (please note that elevators do not exist in the building and would be challenging who was physically challenged) and there were only 2 rooms at the top of the staircase. The room was very large and very charming and it was in the middle of Clayton. We were walking distance from coffee shops, restaurants and clubs. There were only 2 issues I had with the roon. Someone damaged the carpet and there was a stain that they couldn't get out. Also, it was hard to regulate the hot water. I am planning to continue going to this hotel.

The Seven Gables is tucked into a bustling neighborhood loaded with shops and restaurants, right by the freeway. Cars need to be valet parked because there is not a lot available close by--but parking was not expensive. The staff is what makes this hotel superb. They ALL went out of their way to make sure we had what we needed--and even took special care to make sure my late sleeping son got a great breakfast after breakfast was over. The night manager sent us to their own restaurant after it was closed and couldn't recommend a neighborhood hotel one night, and that was a bit off putting for us. Except for that, the hotel is personal and adorable. Great internet connection speed, lots of closets and electgrical outlets, but no towel bars or counter in the bathroom. Hmmm...its like staying at your wealthy aunt's house not a hotel. We loved it and will go back.

I have stayed at the chain hotels in the area and definitely prefer the personal service at the Seven Gables Inn!! Clayton, MO is one of the cutest little downtowns I have seen. I travel all across the US and have been to St. Louis 4 times for business. This was my first time staying at the Seven Gables and will always stay here in the future. Very quaint and comfy, just like I perceive Clayton to be. While being on a business trip, it makes me feel at home. The continental breakfasts are very nice and the restaurant on site is great!
