Here's the situation: I booked a standard room for my one-night stay. I checked in after 930pm and they said all the rooms were sold out and that I had a complimentary upgrade to a suite. When I arrived at SLS to check in, my room was not ready. The front desk staffer, offered us complimentary drinks at the bar while we waited. Decor: Hotel has changed and not for the better. It has a upbeat decor but boarders on urban- hip hop. The floor lamps were modeled after AK-47 machine guns; most innapropriate for a hotel. The staff in this hotel is UNBELIEVABLE!!! From the valets to room service, they are so friendly and warm and just all around fantastic. My one and only issue I had with this hotel is the fact that every night they authorize $300 on your credit card for possible hotel expenses, which means on a five day stay, they hold up $1500 out of my bank account. Where do I start, the lobby is beautiful, the front desk and concierge are helpful, but once you go up to the room you won't be happy. "ALL HAT AND NO CATTLE"
I checked out within 7 hours of checking in. Great check-in and everyone is VERY cool. Unfortunately, they forgot about how to run a hotel. The staff is not polished as one would expect of a property of this caliber. They are poorly managed and all of the blame rests with the GM who sets the tone. The restaurant is presented as "Chef of the year" and […] blah...blah....blah. I fell for it and came back to entertain clients despite having checked out because i had to have LA's finest, particularly if the Chef artiste''s medium is Spanish Tapas! Big disappointment; spotty service, i can only remember one dish out of a dozen or more that was decent (the apple-fennel salad was a wow) and the wine was the worst i have had in many years (and would never disrespect the Spanish who make some of the greatest wine in my opinion.) The Patisserie is fabulous and warrants driving out of the way for desert as it is hard to beat but the chef's molecular experiments were meant to include sugar or he just seems to create one big fizzle when it comes to the feeding. My wife and i succombed to the SLS as the Four Seasons price was through the roof cuz of Golden Globes. The hotel saved us money but the rooms are small and the bed is very low to ground and seems like a futon rather than a bed. Modern design may look good but generally functions poorly.
