"Great place to stay"
I found the Pickwick on hotels.com and it was the most reasonably priced with the highest rating. We loved it! It had old charm but was very clean and modern too. Also very close to public transportation (bus and BART).Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great little boutique hotel"
Very convenient and comfortable. Friendly staff. Room nicelyset up with all the comforts I would expect in a much more expensive hotelGenuine Expedia guest review
"Not bad for location"
Older hotel but well maintained for the most part. I had some issues with noise (garbage trucks - but that is probably the case in all downtown hotels) and water pressure (again probably the case in all older hotels). Overall it was fine. I am always shocked at the cost of downtown SFO hotels but c'est la vie.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"A little dated, but a fine hotel."
My only concern was when we stayed on the 2nd floor and felt vulnerable to break as the windows were fairly easily accessed. request a higher floor if possibleGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very loud street noise."
The architecture of the hotel is gorgeous. We were told it used to be a bus station back in the early 1900's. I am not a snooty, need to stay in a fancy hotel, type of person, but I do appreciate cleanliness and a fairly quiet room. The old windows were still in place, and new windows were added in front of the old windows, some of these were missing, […] and some of the old windows did not close all the way. They had rust around them. The shower floor had tons of hair on the floor.....not ours. yuck, mold on the shower curtain, very small room. The bed was pretty soft, yellow stains on the white comforter.I am a very light sleeper, and all you hear throughout the night are people yelling or sirens going by. It is very conveniently located to the malls and shopping, but that is not what we were there for. The staff was very kind, super fast check in, not complaints about staff at all. "Location is the best!"
I was quite impressed with The Pickwick. I will definitely return in the near future. The front desk was quite helpful. The room was awesome. But above all the location is the absolute best.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Good hotel, but didn't get what I reserved"
Overall the hotel was nice and very clean. The room looked nice and still had the retro feel to it that you would expect a hotel built in 1926 to have. The staff was very friendly and the hotel is located near the mall and many places to eat. We went for SF Pride this year and we were only 3 blocks from the UN Plaza and City Hall where the festivities […] were located. My only issue is I reserved two beds through Hotels.com but when I got to the hotel there weren't any available so I had to settle for one bed. Luckily I was able to talk them into bringing in a roll away at no extra charge. They told me at check in they would give me a free upgrade the next time I stay at the hotel but I didn't get anything about this so I doubt I will actually get that upgrade. Hotels.com said overnight parking is $40 but I got charged $60. Then when I mentioned how I was staying at the hotel and it was only supposed to be $40 the garage attendant claimed to not understand what I was saying. On top of that $60 I had to pay another $18 for 3 extra hours. Overall I would stay at this hotel again but try to find somewhere cheaper to park or make sure I only get charged what I'm told I would be. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give this hotel a solid 8. "Amazing Hotel, Great Value"
Hotel rooms were very clean for the price. Hotel is a bit classic, but you know what? I kind of liked it! Very vintage feel, but overall great experience. Friendly staff and very helpful if you need help. The hotel is a block from the Moscone Center and about 20 minutes away from all the usual tourist attractions. There is a bar connected to the hotel […] that has awesome specials and definitely one of the better hotel bars I've been too! Totally would stay again! Thanks Pickwick for an awesome stay! "Great location, great value"
We booked this hotel within a week of our trip. It was the "hotels.com" deal at the time and at the price we were quite happy with the wonderful location near the bustling center of Market Street. The hotel is also quite well adorned and the room had a perfectly clean, contemporary look and a great view from the large windows. The staff we interacted […] with were professional and courteous. I saved this hotel for future reference because it stood out in my experience traveling to San Francisco. I always wish parking was cheaper, but it was similar to most overnight situations in the city. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Jewel of a hotel in the heart of the City"
We stayed for two nights at this lovely hotel just south of Market Street. Although we checked in early, our room was ready for us. The hotel staff was friendly. Because it is a small hotel there is not a lot of staff. The concierge doubled at a bellman, but there was always someone around when you needed assistance. Because it is a small hotel, the […] hotel staff greeted us by name as we came and went, which added a nice personal touch. The hotel is clean and comfortable and in a lovely old building that was clearly updated recently. The room was very very small, which might bother some people, but we found that it is was so well appointed and so cleverly laid out that we did not mind the size. A restaurant with an entrance off the lobby serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The first night we were exhausted and had dinner at the hotel restaurant ("Soma"). It was fine meal at a reasonable price and the service was excellent. All in all a great stay. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great location for combining business and pleasure"
Great value, a really nice hotel with a European feel. Bed was really comfortable and the room was nicely decorated and well equipped: good lighting, the mini frig. was a good size and the radio had an iPod docking station; a nice touch. Keurig coffee-maker was convenient. Internet connection was fine, only one issue of dropped connnection. On site […] restaurant served good food and had daily happy hours until 7p. Room is close to Union Square, BART and within 5 minutes of the business district. Employees were friendly and helpful throughout our visit. We will stay here again! "Aging hotel that was a bit pricy for what you get."
Most of these comments are probably typical for many hotels in SoMa (south of Market Street district of downtown San Francisco) but since we were charged 2-3x the normal rate during the Google I/O conference for an aging hotel experience, I wanted to share them. The staff was friendly and the double beds were very comfortable but the hotel definitely […] shows it's age. The street was also very noisy with sometimes Ambulances and Firetrucks blaring every 5-10 minutes as early as 5-6 in the morning. Before 7am on our second night there, the entire building fire alarms went off and we all ran outside in our pajamas as the Fire Department showed up, came in for 5 minutes, and left. It would have been nice to get an explanation from the staff but none came and understandably they were probably getting inundated with not-so-pleasant calls from customers that day. The pipes also screech very loudly when people shower so if someone next to you takes a very early shower, chances are you'll be getting up with them unless you've bought earplugs in advance. Also, there is not a huge amount of sound proofing and if you have a child next to your room or loud adults they will definitely become part of your room atmosphere whether you like it or not. Anyway, not trying to be over critical but we payed a pretty high rate for our room during the conference (which is kinda expected). I don't plan on staying at this hotel again which is likely the best way to voice my opinion. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great location, small old rooms, heavy road noise"
Ok for one night's stay if you can figure out how to get the noise from the street out of your room. I was on the 3rd floor facing the street and the windows wouldn't close (had to get maintenance to close them) and when they did, it wasn't still helpful. I could hear people and buses very loud in the room. In the bathroom, shower was a small stream […] of water that could not be adjusted. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The room was just right for my needs. The location was perfect, the staff was very polite and helpful, and the room was quiet. There were a couple of detracting factors. While the room was very clean, the a/c was hidden and I would have had to call down to the front office for someone to turn it on. I opted not to and slept well anyway. In the morning, […] there was no hot water in the shower. The only temperature options were very cold and cool. When I mentioned this to the front office staff they were quite apologetic and assured me that they would take care of it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice hotel conveniently located at a decent price."
Nice hotel conveniently located downtown at a decent price. Parking is in a garage underneath the hotel and the hotel does not have a valet at the front door so you have to drive it in. Parking rate is comparable to other hotels in the area.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Average Hotel with Poor Service"
First time staying at the hotel so I don't know if everyone will have the same experience. The shower didn't have hot water 2 of the 5 nights I stayed at the hotel. I was placed in room 233 which borders on a side street. Every morning at 4:30 - 5:00 am I was awoken by the sound of glass bottles being emptied into a dumpster by the garbage men. Of course, […] not the hotels fault. When I asked at the staff member at front desk who put me in the room whether he was aware of situation, the staff member nodded as if he was aware. He offered no reconciliation. On the positives, the bed was comfortable, and although the room was smaller, it was functional. The poor service ruined my experience and I wouldn't recommend the hotel to other potential guests. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

This hotel is in a great location in downtown San Fran. You can very easily get unto public trans to get anywhere in the city from its location. Granted, it is not in 100% condition but it is comfortable.Genuine Expedia guest review

Stuff is old and rooms are small yes, but things are clean. Walls are paper thin and all that. Good location, although street noise is pretty high even with the dual pane windows. "Good location, friendly & responsive staff"
South of Market so there is a ton of stuff within walking distance, lots of good food and bars around. The hotel is definitely an old building, and the amenities reflect it, but they've done a great job with both the updates and maintenance. Had an issue with A/C not working properly, but they had a maintenance guy up there in minutes to repair it (successfully). […] Had a Keurig in my room (with K-Cups) and a mini fridge. The location is great. The TV and Keurig were nice touches. However, the refrigerator didn't work and there were exposed wires by the baseboard. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. Overall, not a bad choice for a short stay.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Horrible experience with manager on duty!"
We booked a room for our guest and received an email confirmation that the room was paid in full. When our guest arrived at the hotel they were turned away and told that the room was not paid for. They called and we spoke to the manager on duty who told us that there was nothing he could do to help us and our guest would need to pay themselves. That […] unfortunately wasn't an option. We offered to pay via credit card over the phone and he told me no. That he would not accept payment over the phone. We had to drive to the hotel to pay. After we paid he literally told us and our guest. The next time we're in San Francisco to not come back to the Pickwick Hotel. We were not welcome. What we did to cause this reaction I have no idea. Our guest was respectful and flying in from out of town. We are still in talks with the other managers about the cause of this and what they will do to address this horrendous experience at the Pickwick. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The Pickwick Hotel Thank you for taking the time to post a review in regards to your concern and experience that you had with us. It is through people sharing with us their experiences that we are able to improve. In reviewing the reservation details we have found that at the time the reservation was made a credit card was needed as a guarantee only and it was not a "pay in advance" booking. For the safety of our guests and companies that we partner with, whenever a 3rd party credit card is used we do require a completed credit card authorization form along with a copy of the card and photo identification. This is for the protection of the card holder. The manager on duty was on his first week as a manager and while that is not an excuse, he was strictly going by the rules. We have used this experience as an example of empowerment in the future. We hope that you and your travelers will once again entrust us in the future as your hotel of choice.
Was an ok place to stay for a business conference. The location is excellent (was 1 block from my conference hotel). Area around the hotel was safe. Price was good. The hotel is an old building with modernization. This means the room is small, albeit adequate for 1-2 people. The room had nice amenities (flat screen TV, iPod dock radio, comfy king size […] bed). The wireless was free; it's fast enough for normal browsing. The shower head sucked; it was one of those low flow types. Hot water was always available. "Really good hotel, great people"
The Pickwick Hotel is in really great location. It's just off of Union Square, the Powell street cable car turn around, the Westfield Shopping Center and the Moscone convention center. And unlike some other hotels, it's far enough away from the "Tenderloin area" that you don't have to deal with so many beggers and other undesiriables. I found the staff […] extremely friendly and helpful. The Asian man that checked me in was outstanding. He was a real "hotel man." I regret not getting his name. My roon was fairly large, clean and everything worked. The bed was very comfortable. In fact the bed was as good or better than some higher rated hotels beds that I have used in the past. The bathroom was small and could be a problem for parties of more than 2 people. However, I was by myself so it was not an issue. The towells looked brand new. I was in a room on one of the lower floors and I could hear some noise from the street, so next time I may ask for a higher room or one that does not face the street. Would I stay at the Pwickwick again? You bet. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"great location; outdated hotel"

I think this hotel is in a convenient location and has updated their rooms to take on a more modern look. However, you can tell how dated the building is. I didn't exactly have the best water pressure in the shower (which is a big pet peeve of mine) -- and by that I mean it would slow down to a drip and then after a few seconds come back to its "regular" […] level of pressure. Other than that, it wasn't bad...it just didn't impress me either. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Location is great and parking in the 5th street garage is reasonable. Room wasn't bad. We had a corner room and din't plan on being in the room except to sleep.
