"Nice Location, Lovely Hotel"
We enjoyed our stay at the Rydges Kensington. The hotel was very quaint, and the staff was very helpful and friendly. The continental breakfast next door at the Jam Cupboard was wonderful! It has a nice selection of breads, cereals, yogurt, and pastries. We were very satisified. While the room was somewhat small, it was set up to be very functional, […] and the bed was extremely comfortable. The location was perfect. It's about a 20 second walk to the Gloucester Road stop on the Underground the the London Hop On Hop Off buses picked up right outside the hotel! You can't get anymore convenient than that. There were 2 nice pubs right down the road and a nice Italian restaurant. The Marco Polo pub right next door really needs to have more English beers on tap, though. "Not a 4.1 star hotel"
We decided to stay at Rydges because: 1-location, 2- the rating on hotels.com. Duration: 3 nights. The Pros: location, hotel is clean. The Cons: extremely rude service (considering this is London you would think that service is much better than New York - where we're from), Hotels.com messed up our booking (that's another story) and it took over 2 hours […] to get this resolved. The manager refused to correct the issue and demanded that we pay extra per night. Finally we got the room we originally paid for. Next, the beds - if you like soft and sunken mattress, this hotel would be the perfect one for you. My back completely shocked from their bed, you can see a whole on the bed in the morning. Smell - we were put on the first floor and it smelled like sewage, we had to buy candles to help with the smell. The hotel refused to do something about that. If I was to put up with all of these negatives, I would stay somewhere else and pay 1/2 of what I paid. My family and I stayed here on vacation. We had two separate stays in two rooms (3 fl). The rooms are nicely kept and furnished although small. The king are quite large almost the same as in US so no need to be concerned that these aresults more like doubles with a fancy name. The staff here was friendly and helpful. The Rydges Kensington is not a large hotel but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in terms of location. The hotel is a few minutes away (by foot) from Gloucester Road station which makes it incredibly convenient to travel. We had a pleasant stay here. it has easy access to the tube station, walkable distance to Albert Hall and several museums. It is on the pricier side, and they charged us 50/night for an additional bed for our 2yo, which I think was too much. This is a really well placed hotel, no more than a 10 minutes walk to Royal Albert Hall, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and a lot of other interesting places to visit. "Some good, some not."
I have stayed at Rydges before and was previously treated like a queen--not this time. Hotels seem to forget it's not hard to get the basics right: decent space, good mattress, quality sheets/towels, ventilation, light, water pressure/shower/bath space, internet connectivity, television with a couple of decent channels, service personnel. Easy, right? […] My most recent stay at Rydges featured a teeny room with a window facing a wall, a bed that literally slanted, internet that cost 10 pounds (in this day and age??), a heating/cooling system that was sporadically attentive and so loud I could not hear the phone over it, a sink so small it made a Paris apartment seem like a spa, a rainforest shower head with mediocre water pressure in a shower space so small you could not escape the water and felt like you were drowning, all BBC channels. "Very good location, terrible room"
This hotel is very well located, close to Gloucester tube station, and has a variety of markets, coffee shops and restaurants around. The room was the smallest room I've stayed in, and this was my fifth time in London. It had a single bed, with 2 sides of it leaning against the wall. The tv was oddly placed, that made it difficult to watch it. Under […] the TV there was a small table with a chair, but it was hard to sit, as the bed was right behind it. To open the suitcase, I had either to block the room door or to obstruct somewhere else. The bathroom was ok, good amenities, although it wasn't very clean, there were some hair lying around on the sink, on the shower and even on the bathing towel they provided. Even the room being paid, they made me leave with them 100 pounds and my original passport, as I didn't had a credit card with me. Would not recommend nor stay there again. "A mixed experience"
The checkin was very bad. The young woman on the desk gave me a room with a double bed, not the "executive king" I had booked. When I pointed out the error, she told me that was the English version of king size. Since I am English and she was not, I would have been amused, had I not been traveling for nearly 24 hours. She then offered me rooms in the […] basement and elsewhere. If I had not already checked with the cleaning staff that there was an "executive king" available, I would not have been in a good position to argue. When I gave the woman the number of the available room, she told me it was occupied, and only when I told her I had visited the empty room, did she give it to me. Never in my life have I had such an experience. During the four days I spent at the hotel, I never saw this ?Australian staff member again, and all the other staff I had contact with were excellent. The room was rather cramped for two people but, apart from a small spot of mold in the shower, everything else was fine, especially the location. Will stay here again and recommend to others. Room is quite spacious as far as European hotel rooms go and the bathroom was large, including an oversized rain shower. Staff was helpful and quickly okayed our request for late check out. Tube station is almost directly across the street allowing you to easily access all of London. The Rydges was one of the roomier and nicer hotels I've stayed in. We usually stay at the Kensington Hotel when we're in London but I thought I'd try something different. This hotel was fine but I would not stay here again. I paid for the Executive King which is supposed to be larger and my room was in the basement or "lower ground". When I asked about the size of the room I was told that the "lower ground" basement […] rooms were larger than those on the upper floors. This was my first time in London and I had a wonderful time! I liked that it is really close to the Glouster Station. It was easy to go anywhere in the city. The staff was nice and the room was comfortable. However, their websites boasts of free wi-fi, but if you want to access it you have to pay 20 pounds. "Small room for family of 3 people"
We paid for a 3 people room (2 adults and 1 child) and we got a small room with a queen bed and an extra bed very uncomfortable. Also we couldn't almost walk in the room with that extra. They should not sell those rooms for a family. The internet was a madness, we had to fill a form to connect every time and could not connect all my devices at the same […] time. "Don't take the last room available."
It was the last room available and it lived up to that bill. The room was right over the kitchen and, since the window didn't close all the way, it was filled with different aromas. The shower was clogged. At first, I had one minute to use the water before I had to turn it off due to a clogged drain. It eventually drained. After I reported the problem […] and supposedly some action taken, I had two minutes to use the water before it filled the drain. We enjoyed a two night stay when we first arrived in London-- and we returned for another night after traveling north for a bit. The hotel was very clean and most of the staff was friendly and pleasant. Several were eager to answer questions and help us with map routes. We had booked the Kensington Suite and were thrilled with the size, cleanliness (the room felt brand new), and ammenities (2 large LCD televsions; separate shower and tub; etc.). For our first visit to London we got lucky and chose this hotel. I ignored many previous reviews as they mostly seem to come prior to recent renovations performed on the hotel. We found the room to be comfortable (perhaps a bit small by American standards), clean, and the staff were very accomodating and friendly. The only real complaint I had about the hotel was the charge for wireless internet service. The charge was ridiculous and a bit of a black eye on the hotel. The hotel lost their entire television service, which was terribly disapopinting, since I chose this hotel in the neighborhood of my daughter's dorm, where she is doing her semester abroad.
