Very close to centre and felt quite safe coming back to hotel late at night. Clean and spacious room I was staying in. This was room with 2 twin beds for single occupancy. Very clean bath room. Very good room service daily. Coffee maker in room. Reception well staffed and helpful. Only draw back was single elevator but it was not a problem for me as I was staying on the fourth floor. For guests staying on the 9th floor I suppose it may cause problem in peak holiday seasons

I try to never write a bad review. I've stayed in this hotel once before in Sept 09. So I thought it would be nice to stay there again. When I tried to turn on the radiator heater I was informed that they won't turn on til 6pm. After 6 I tried again and called to front desk. They told me their boiler was out and they weren't sure how long it would be or when it would be fixed. The front desk brought me up a blanket that was thin and frail. About midnight I couldn't take the cold anymore so I called someone I know in the city and begged them to stay at their place for the night. The worst part was that when I walked down to the lobby it was nice and warm. I just don't get it.

The hotel was ok once you got inside. The room was small and the bathroom was smaller. You can't open the door to the bathroom because it hits the toilet. There is no room to put any toiletries in the bathroom either. The room was on the 3rd floor and it was very LOUD from street noise. Also, not even a block over is not an area I felt comfortable walking in. Its a good thing everywhere I wanted to go was the other direction.

We lost electricity 2 out of the 3 mornings I stayed there (apparently a blown fuse). When I called the front desk to alert them they blamed the guests. Although the location on the edge of the Tenderloin District may pose a problem for some, Mark Twain's proximity to theaters, Market Street, Union Square, and the War Memorial Buildings (Opera House, etc.) is a plus. Considering what we paid for the room, I guess I shouldn't really expect more. Be satisfied with a shabby carpet, chipped paint in the bathroom, dim lighting, cramped quarters, and a slow, really slow internet connection in the lobby for airline check-in. If we really wanted first class accommodations (5 star), I realize we would have had to pay dearly for it. All things considered, we got what we paid for and nothing more.

With all the talk about the Union Square neighborhood, I was rather worried, but we found that the homeless come with the general area. The Mark Twain has the same homeless folks wandering nearby as the high class Hyatt across the street. We found the staff friendly and responsive. Jasmine went out of her way to make certain that we were satisfied with our room and answered all our questions patiently and courteously. Still, the neighborhood is so perfectly located at the hub of everything. We didn't need a car and used the Muni pass to get just about everywhere. So many museums, some of them free, almost all within walking distance. I'd go back, especially given the price we paid for our stay.

The walls were paper thin and heard way to much that they were doing. I'm a mother and I'm so thankful that I was there with my friend and not my child. I would never suggest this hotel to a family.
