Rooms were clean, a little dated, but nice. Hotel is right across the Grand Canal from the train station, which is nice not having to look for your hotel in the maze of Venice streets. Breakfast was very good. My only complaint was that there was no place to check email. They need to add a kiosk or have a shared computer somewhere.

Hotel Carlton is located in a perfect location, right across the Santa Lucia station and the Roma bus station. The hotel is clean and modernized. Staff service are very friendly, helpful, and hospitable. I would recommend this hotel. Great hotel, great price and great location.

The front desk staff was extremely rude.I actually saw him berating a hotel quest. When I asked him a question , he was very abrupt. The dining room staff was not good and the room was not worth the price. I even found mold in our room. The sheet / cover had a smelly odor and our t.v was not working.

THE ROOM IS VERY SMALL BUT YOU PAY FOR THE VIEW WHICH IS GORGEOUS. BUT I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE THE CARPETING. IT HAD STAINS AND SHOULD BE REMOVED. BUT THE HOTEL IS IN A GREAT LOCATION AND THE ROOFTOP BAR WAS WITH THE VIEW OF THE CANAL IS ABSOLUTELY AN AWESOME FEATURE.

This was my third visit to Venice. I booked a triple superior room for three adults. The hotel is conveniently located across from the train station so it is literally impossible to get lost. Yes, it was small, clean, a bit dated, decorated in typical quaint Venetian decor (qualities I expected) but OVER PRICED. At breakfast, I noticed the hotel catered to tour groups (signs pointed where the tour was to congregate for breakfast which is another negative point). I am avid traveler and have stayed in *** star rooms and was GREATLY impressed and thought it should have been rated higher. I have stayed in three star rooms where it was that *** stars (not a big deal, I was expecting it). I have also had the opportunity to SPLURGE (paying just as much) and stay in ***** star rooms and truly indulged in the luxury of every single star ... and LOOOOVED IT! So, my suggestion is find another quaint hotel off one of the canals, with a quaint fair price and save yourself a lot of dollars/euros. Read more

I have been to Venice numerous times.. The location is convenient for train or taxi arrival. Close to cruise terminal. It is a thirty minute walk to the main attractions such as Rialto or main square.. Decent hotel but very hard beds.

Easy location to find being just 500 meters from Piazzale Roma terminal station. Front desk spoke English, so getting directions and information was easy and helpful. Disappointing room rating is based upon the expectations set in the online brochure versus what we experienced. * The Front Desk staff needs to be replaced since they offer lousy advice. -We asked directions to the Murano glass factories. They started to prepare a "free tour" The one thing we read was to NEVER accept a free tour of Murano since it comes with an high-pressure personal shopper. Also -our Vaporetto pass would get us there on an express boat for no additional charge. -The front desk clerk said that the only way to the airport early in the am was a private water taxi for 110 euro. He said we would have to drag our luggage a far distance and over several bridges to get to the bus terminal. FACT -The distance to the bus terminal was actually CLOSER that our short walk to the train station, and the two bridges were very small with the total number of stairs LESS THAN those of the bridge to the train station. We bought two 5 euro tickets and saved 100 euro. -Gondolas – they said it was a FIXED PRICE all over of 120 euro. We paid 80 euro at the Rialto Bridge. Everyone was very nice and helpful. I have a gluten allergy and they were very accommodating in providing gluten free options at the breakfast buffet and for dinner. The room was very nice - the only problem is that it was rather warm and humid and the air conditioing was not available until 20 May (we were there from 28 April thru 2 May).

Hotel Carlton is located right on the Grand Canal with vaporetto station out the front door and the train station right across. There is a bridge with many steps when you are carrying your luggage...but it doesn't get better than this! Definitely not a 4 stars hotel by American standard. It’s about 30 min walk from the hotel to the main attractions […] of Venice, if you prefer to be closer to St Marco it a matter of choice, you will lose the proximity to mainland transport and will have to take the vaporetto and/or drag your luggage through the canals and alleys. The rooms are good size, a little bit dark, very clean, quiet, and comfortable. The lobby is very fancy with free WiFi, an added value. Staffs are really nice and helpful. The breakfast was typical, as were all hotel breakfasts on our Italy trip... lots of pastries, cereal, and water down scrambled eggs, cold meats, juice and coffee. I wouldn't pay more. Venice is small and everything is at a walking distance. If you choice convenient than this is this hotel is for you. If you want to save money and convenience is not your top priority, there are lower and better hotels on the mainland a bus ride from Venice. Most hotels on the Grand Canal have highly price tag, not value for money. I would highly advice you to make your reservation in advance. Read more

The only problem with our room was lack of AC. We were there in very cool weather and our room was sometimes a little warm. I can't imagine this in the summer. I would not recommend to a friend for summer travel due to AC.

Travelers to Venice would be well advised to look to other four-star hotels. My wife and I spent two quick nights at the Carlton from April 14th through the 16th. Having lived in Italy for some time and having traveled throughout Europe, I am comfortable stating that the Carlton is far less than a four-star hotel, even taking into consideration the […] "typical" hotel one encounters in Venice. Particularly: (1) the bathroom had not been updated in at least the past 20 years; (2) mold along the tub; (3) chair in room collapsed while using; (4) windows in hotel were not updated to accommodate insulated panes, even while those in the three-star hotel next door were. We booked the Carlton through Expedia as it was listed as a recommended four-star hotel by Expedia. The price was competitive with other four-star hotels, but access to the hotel was the deciding factor. However, given the condition of the room and bathroom, we are exceptionally disappointed. Hotel not well maintained, room was suppose to be antique, but the bedding was really tacky and dirty. Even the bathroom was dated with patterns painted on the tiles! We had a fantastic experience at this hotel for 1 night! Walk out of the train station, up and over a giant foot bridge, turn right and your there! We got a great off season rate and when we mentioned it was our honeymoon they upgraded us to a room overlooking the canal! So great! Room was quite small and was very musty; if someone is allertgic to dust this this not the place to stay. We asked the concierge for a restaurant recommendation and that also turned out to be a very expensive affair with so-so food quality. Unfortunatly the beds were hard, and so were the pillows. I don't believe this hotel comes any where near a 4 star rating. Although they brought a proper hair dryer to us on request, the one supplied in the room was a joke. The attitude of the staff was was not warm and fuzzy. Don't stay here.

It is across the island from the main sites but walking through Venice is part of the fun so unless you are unable to walk about twenty minutes it should not be a problem. Hotel staff was completely UNhelpful and had a very bad attitude. I paid for an upgraded double and wound up in the back of the hotel facing a brick wall rather than the canal. Desk staff fixed water taxi rates with the taxi operators and overcharged. Would not recommend staying at this hotel.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal Aug 5-7 2011. We were overall very pleased with this hotel and would be happy to stay there again. The hotel is located directly across the Grand Canal from the Santa Lucia train station in Venice. Getting to the hotel from the train station simply involves going across a bridge (Note that […] like most bridges in Venice, this bridge has steps - pack light!!!). The hotel is very clean and does have a nice ambiance. Our room was comfortable but small. The room was equipped with a fridge mini-bar and a safe. The decor in the room was rather quaint - supposedly trying to recreate ancient Venetian decor. The bed was comfortable enough. No problems with the bathroom, toilet or showers. The buffet breakfast was adequate - not spectacular. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. One idiosyncrasy is that they use actual keys instead of key cards. So you have to turn in your keys when you leave the hotel and pick them up on your return. It is about a 40 min walk from the hotel to St. Mark's Square but it is a pleasant walk with lots of stores and restaurants en route. The "water-bus" dock is close to the hotel as well, so alternatively, you can take a water-bus. The only negative aspect of our stay was the poor internet service. We paid for 24 hrs of "high speed" internet which turned out to be much slower than a dial up and so virtually useless. Ironically, we later discovered we could get FREE WiFi in the lobby. Read more

Lovely hotel with excellent staff. It's conveniently located right across from the train station so it's very easy to get to, other than having to drag your suitcases up and down the stairs of the bridge. We booked 3 different rooms. The staff were pleasant, helpful, and courteous. The laundry service was excellent, they cleaned and pressed my clothing beautifully. Ethernet service only in rooms, but wifi avail at the bar next door, also very accomodating. Vendors outside the hotel are less expensive than San Marcos and Rialto. Good european breakfast, warm and cold food served, fresh fruit.
