"Small, but cozy"
We just stayed one night. The room was small, but the staff was extremely helpful with suggestions for places to eat and visit. It was a lovely time.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Too old too small"
Hotel staff was excellent but room was disappointing too small. Parking wqs not on site and cost extra. Rooms on internet appeared larger. No ice machine had to ask staff to get ice. Had a heat wave while there no air conditioning. Problems locking door. Have stayed in cheaper hotels with larger room and more basics. No refrigerator in room could have […] one for an extra charge. I had a great experience staying at this hotel! The location is just near Union Square, close to many fantastic restaurants and shops and confident to public transit. The cozy hotel has been updated very nicely and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this hotel!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not worth the cost and terrible service"
I have no idea where to start on how terrible the service is at Cartwright. It started when I called to confirm my reservation; the woman I spoke with was rude and made me feel like I was inconveniencing her by calling. When I arrived I was treated the same way by the women at the front desk: neither one looked up from their computers throughout the […] course of our "conversation". At first I thought they were really busy, however come to find out, they were incapable of looking at my face while carrying on the conversation because one was playing Tetris while the other was researching the latest Hollywood gossip on the web. In terms of the room, as other reviewers have stated--it is small. But that didn't bother me. Lack of air conditioning did however bother me, especially for the price of the room ($280 per night). Coming back to the room after a 90 degree day on the fifth floor was excruciating. The maintenance of the room was sub-par as well. The bathtub lever was broken. Water poured from the handle, and I had to twist it 760 degrees to get hot water, making the water pressure inadequate at best. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. There are MUCH better hotels available in this area for a better price. Even if you were to get $180 per night fee, there are still better hotels in this location for THAT price. "Not what you are expecting"
This hotel is terrible. Did you know it is on the Selling Block? No buyers yet, and I know why. No Air Conditioning. The fans were not strong enough to eliminate the heat in the room. Tiny bathrooms, small rooms. No Internet connections--they say WiFi, but it is so slow, it times you out. The hallways are very narrow. The Shower head was the nicest […] part of the entire stay. This hotel is good and affordable. The hotel itself looks a little old, but it is clean and rooms are clean and very well kept. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Shout out to Arturo, he was great!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great rooms and location!"
No complaints for the cartwright hotel. One block from Union. Maybe four blocks from the Bart station. Fair price - but small rooms. Might not be suitable for some people, but I thought they were awesome, clean, and functional! I will be staying there again in the future. I recommend if you want a true quality SF hotel experienceGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Location of the hotel is good. You are in downtown, close to union square. However, the hotel is not fancy or anything of that sort. It is barely comfortable. If you are just staying there to sleep at night, it is good enough. Was expecting more for the price I paid. Overall - OK.Genuine Expedia guest review
Very cute hotel, old rustic feel, nice room. Small but understandable due to age of hotel. Great location. Loved itGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I loved my stay. It was in close proximity to public transportation which allowed me to get all around without much trouble. The staff was great and beyond helpful. I cant say enough good about the staff. I ended up havibg a small crises and they stuck with me every step of the way and i would not have been able to resolve the issue without them.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Old Hotel for the Modern Man."
My observations, in no particular order: The building is quite old, but has been renovated to have most of the modern conveniences. Beds and furniture are old, but comfortable. Rooms are small, but decent if you don't plan to spend too much time in them. Wi-fi coverage is excellent and internet speed is good. Public computers available in the lobby/hang […] out area. No breakfast offered. Staff is friendly. Hotel bar exists, I did not check it out. Rooms are heated via old-school radiators. They kind of make a bubbling noise for a while after they are turned on. This might bother light sleepers. Walls are thin. I had no problems but a party in the next room could be an issue for light sleepers. Standard hotel room features are present: coffee pot (bring your own coffee), TV, Desk/chair, iron and ironing board, ceiling fan, deadbolt on the door, and, of course, a bible in the night stand. 7/10, would stay here again. "good location , rooms are terrible"
a one night stay , wanted to pay a bit more than the cheapest, to hope to get a clean room , ended up with a room that smells bad, and bit noisy and not comfortable.Genuine Expedia guest review
"The staff is wonderful."
This hotel is old and quaint. The rooms are clean. It is very convenient to shopping in union square.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great downtown hotel!"
Loved this place - the room was very nice, comfortable and clean. The location is superb for shopping and it is easy to go elsewhere by bus or taxi. The service was great and the staff was helpful and sweet.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice , well-located hotel"
Great helpful staff. Located near all the places you want to visit and lots of restaurantsGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Friendly staff during check in/check out. Bed was nice and comfortable. Bathroom is incredibly small, like viewers have said, but the shower was fantastic! Lovely hotel :)Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel next to Union Square"
My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights. It's a small hotel near Union Square. Extremely convenient location and great price amidst the large (and expensive) hotels surrounding Union Square. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were small, but it was fine for the 2 of us and we didn't plan to spend much time there anyways. […] There's free coffee in the morning and a business center. The rooms also have free Wi-Fi. Rooms were clean and the maintenance staff were extremely friendly as well. The Hotel is really old but the city is old so that's to be expected. For the price it's great for the location it's in.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Quaint and Friendly"
The Cartwright is a quaint hotel located at Union Square. Check-in was a breeze and the staff were very courteous and professional. The room was cozy with a view of Sutter. Only downside wasn't a real issue, the bathroom was so small that the door opened outward, blocking the hotel room door from opening. It was funny and cute to me. I'd stay here […] again. "Cartwright hotel is a gem!"
I really liked this hotel, very well kept, clean lots of light in my room. It's true my single bed was small but It's fine. A great place I highly recommend.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice hotel. Rooms are really tiny and gross"
You cannot move around in your bathroom. Windows are so old you feel like your outsideGenuine Expedia guest review
"Does the job"
It did not look like the pictures shown. The room I had was very condescend and small. There wasn't much space to move around but it does the job. I had a place to sleep! It was very close to union square so that was also a bonus.Genuine Expedia guest review
Close to Union Square and China Town. The hotel staff was very kind. The parking garage they set up was a bummer though. Less expensive than most but took forever to get our car out in the morning. I will stay at the Cartwright again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Staff is horrible."
The rooms are really really small. Especially the bathroom. Cleanliness can be better. Room was very dusty. Night time staff is super rude.Genuine Expedia guest review
I don't understand why this hotel got 4.1. This hotel is one of the worst ever. I slept one night in a two twin bedroom. The room was extremely small and cold. Cold wind kept coming from the windows. The radiator was turned off in the morning though it was quite cold (I could not control the radiator, the front desk could.)Genuine Expedia guest review
the bathroom was WAY too small; the hotel room was old, but not old enought to be antique; the rollway bed was overused, there was not ventilation in the bathroom, there was no A/C (we had to keep the window open with the trash can so it would not drop and break).Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Clean Hotel with good wifi in a convenient place"
My overall stay was good! The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean. Wi-fi is FREE & reliable (I was able to work out of my room). The Old fashioned decor & charm is not for everyone though.Genuine Expedia guest review
Pleasant Staff, very accomodating to their guestsGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"near busy down town"
cleanliness of room and hotel, however I wish the hotel offered a later time they serve coffee and tea down stairs. The bathroom was a little too small, the toilette was right up against the sink. Other than this my over all experience was good.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice for the frugal, and nice location."
We travel to experience the location and the room is generally the last place we are, and used for sleeping. Nice hotel but the room was small but comfortable for us. 15 x 15' + bathroom (tight fit) and large walk-in closet. We had a great time, friendly staff when we were there and the bed was very comfortable. Would revisit for convenience, price […] and staff. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great location, tired old hotel"
Great location, comfortable beds, but phone didn't work, coffee carafe was missing, windows didn't lock, couldn't control the heat and no hot water on last day due to boiler repairs.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great location, attentive staff"
Nice older hotel. Close to cable cars, 5 blocks from the BART. Very clean, albeit small rooms, but what more do you need? Plenty of restaurants and pubs nearby so lack of a restaurant/bar in the hotel is not an issue. WiFi in the room worked great. Nice quiet area at night, 24 hour 7-11 and Walgreens across the street for those late night snacks and […] drinks. Would recommend to anyone looking for a decently priced room in a great location. The hotel is cute, but it is old and really needs maintenance. The staff were generally nice. The location is good. The walls are thin and there is no a/c, just an overhead fan, so the loud Union Square noise kept me up. Also parking is $30-$40 a day and a couple blocks from the hotel..Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Always a great stay! The staff is excellent. Missed seeing Lillian at the fron t desk, but will hopefully see her next time. Upgraded my room-which was extremely nice of the staff. Always enjoy my stay!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Old hotel needs renovation"
The hotel would need room renovation. the house keeping is terrible. The shampoo, soaps... were not renewed, even when the bottles were empty. There are no bottled water available in the hotel, not even for sale. This is unacceptableGenuine Expedia guest review
"At least it's conveniently located................"
Felt like I was at a 2 star hotel in Europe---needs lots of TLCGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel is very well located, just a few blocks from the financial district and next to stores and restaurants. Te room was clean and confortable. The staff is very kind and helpful. The window in my room had a big gap between the sashes, so the wind and the noise from the outside was annoying.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient and clean, but small"
Overall, we had a great experience at the Cartwright! The hotel was very charming and the staff was exceptionally friendly. They were more than happy to recommend activities or help us find the right bus line. The rooms were even smaller than we expected, but the bed and pillows were quite comfortable. We spent so little time in the hotel since we were […] out exploring the city that the size of the room and bathroom weren't an inconvenience, just not quite what we expected. You can't beat the location of the Cartwright, though. It felt like we were mere steps away from everything. We had a short walk to get to great shopping, dining, the trolley, many bus routes and the BART station. For the great price and location, sacrificing a little space was definitely worth it! "Value and location"
Room was small but clean and comfortable. Staff very helpful. Beware no air conditioning. An older hotel but well updated. My room was very quiet and in heart of city a block away from the cable car route. Great price for location. Guest computers in lobby were handy to print out boarding passes. Enjoyed my stay and will return.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel is a 2-3 star....Not a four or five...very small, cramped rooms. The bathroom is tinier than I have had on cruise ships. The hotel smells in the bedroom. The rooms are noisy.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Small hotel room, but close for shopping"
The room was as big as my own room back home and the bathroom was way too small. I couldn't even stand at the sink without my legs touching the toilet. The location was great in downtown union square! It was nice to be able to go shopping! My boyfriend and I did a lot of walking, but we got a good workout going through china town, union square, and […] going down to pier 39. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Perfect place to stay for a weekend in the City"
We spent a long weekend in the city for a wedding. This hotel was within walking distance of the reception. A block from the cable car , a few blocks from Chinatown and close to so many great restaurants tooGenuine Expedia guest review
This is an old hotel. It is clean and maintained. The rooms are small. Temperature control comes from opening your windows or turning on the ceiling fan. There is radiator heat but no control. There is no AC. Given the water shortage, I was surprised by the large volume of water flowing out of the shower. There is no hotel restaurant but many options […] within a short walk. They have just coffee in the morning. They claim "Union Square" but are a block north and a bit west. This is in the direction away from the convention center. It takes maybe 15 minutes to walk to BART's Powell Station and 30 minutes to walk to the convention center. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great location & good value, not for allergy-prone"
Pros: Location and value. For the location in Union Square it is an excellent price. Part of the reason it is a value is the rooms are slightly smaller, but big closet and they made excellent use of the space. Extremely friendly and welcoming staff. (All individuals we interacted with were helpful and lovely.) Cons (not uncommon to the area, but for […] those who may not expect it): Parking is on the next block, up the hill. (Most hotels partner with local garages, so common.) Make sure to have the front desk stamp the ticket to get the discounted hotel rate. They are pet-friendly, so if very allergic to dogs and cats (as I am) you may want to stay elsewhere. No AC, though not uncommon. Ceiling fan provided white noise and breeze. "Good, if not great1"
A hidden treasure that needs some repair, but not much. This is a rally good hotel very close to Union Square, and is much cleaner than most 3 star hotels in San Francisco. Well worth the cost. They also provide a friendly, knowledgeable staff. I have rented more that 100 hotels and motels in San Francisco. This one is among the best. It is not the […] best but well worth the price - and location. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice price, comfortable and close to everything."
Very nice, clean hotel, with a very comfortable bed. There is a little street noise, but if you want to experience the city as a resident would, this is the place. The staff is friendly. I wish they had Blue Bottle coffee in the room, considering this is San Francisco. But, overall, an excellent choice for the value.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Older hotel, but very clean and friendly staff"
I liked my stay here. It's in the perfect location. A block from union square and shopping. It's an older hotel and small, but many hotels in that area are. My room and bathroom we're clean, and bed was very comfortable. Staff greeted me every day, and we're spur nice.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
