Needs new, more, and plush towels that are not "shedding"... Elevators are stinky and old. Bathrooms are NICE. Refrigerator was operating, large, and not filled with merchandise (a plus). Grounds were well-kept and BEAUtiful! lobby nicely appointed with flowers... GREAT view.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Going thru renovation"
This hotel is slowly going through a renovation, you can see some changes but can many more to come. The room didn't have a phone, so you couldn't even call the front desk. The internet was super slow and ran by an Ethernet cord. The room had hardwood floors and felt like a re-modeled dorm room from my college days.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Hilo Naniloa Hotel Aloha angel lady, Mahalo for your review. We do value honest feedback. As a Hilo resident, I'm sure you know the storied history of this property. You'll be excited to know that with the new ownership, we are about ready to undergo a full renovation and revitalization. Beautiful new rooms with the latest in technologies, a new restaurant for visitors and kama'aina, and a new open lobby and refreshed banquet spaces, all with hi-speed wi-fi throughout. We intend to bring the glory back to Naniloa, and we invite you return next year and experience a new Naniloa. Mahalo, Kalei Lyman Hotel Manager
This hotel is very nice and will only get better after the renovation.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
So at first glance this hotel looks pretty scary. The outside looks very run down and is not pleasing to the eye at all. I had a sinking feeling in my gut as I walked to the front desk to check in. My instincts were telling me to run and never look back, however I had already paid for the hotel room so running was not an option. So I checked in and […] they gave me a key, not a card like most hotels but a key. Which might I add I thought was quite strange. As I turned the key in my hotel door(room 427) I was taken by surprise. I thought they room was absolutely beautiful! It had huge windows that you could open up to the outside. The windows also had a partial view of the ocean, which might I add was amazing seeing as how I did not pay extra for an ocean view room. It also had a desk, computer chair, refrigerator, two full size beds and air conditioning. The bathroom was also beautiful it was all tile with and all tile shower as well. My shower curtain did look a little dingy but I think It was stained and not actually dirty. Also the room could use a fresh coat of paint other than that I had a great experience with the hotel and was quite surprised. The staff was incredibly friendly and the hotel is right on the ocean with beautiful views and is close to downtown Hilo. There is a swimming pool but it looked kind of dirty and I did not use it because why would you want to swim in a pool when you have the whole ocean!!? Also there are no phones in the rooms or microwaves. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Hilo Naniloa Hotel Aloha Jessica, Thanks for taking the time to review our property. We agree that the hotel currently lacks curb appeal, and are glad that you liked your room. You will be pleased to know that a full exterior paint job is included in our upcoming renovation plans. We also plan on renovating and revitalizing the lobby, restaurant, and meeting spaces in addition to the rooms. Expect a different property if you come back to visit us again! "Nice hotel on Hilo Bay!"
I stayed at the Hilo Naniloa for 10 days. I found the staff to be great, always willing to help. The room I was in had not yet been remodeled, but my son and I found that it fit our needs perfectly. The only thing I missed was wi-fi in the room. They have it in the lobby but our room only had hard-wired internet. No big deal that's why I pay for data […] on my phone! This place looks like it was a 4 star hotel when it was new, but the climate and time have been hard on it. I am glad that it has new owners that are willing to bring it back to it's once luxurious state. I can imagine Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin playing this place in the sixties! Our room was clean, close to the elevator and had a great view. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Hilo Naniloa Hotel Mahalo Bruce for your comments! I glad you found our staff pleasant and that your room met your needs. A new guest WiFi network is already included in our renovation plans. An extensive revitalization will begin soon, and Naniloa will be glorious once again. We hope your travels bring you back so you can see the exciting changes. Aloha, Kalei Lyman Hotel Manager
For our first two nights we requested a king size bed but when we arrived we got two beds instead, even indicating we were on our honeymoon. Not nice. The worst was when we saw the room. Sticky floors, dust and hairs on the floor and in the restroom, dirty sheets, dirty window, broken restroom door.... As if they hadn't cleaned. My husband complained and […] they came quickly to clean the restroom, but not the room. We were disgusted with the room. Days later we stayed there for one extra night (cancelling was not an option). The room, this time with king bed,was newer and clean, though. Very convenient location, close to the airport. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

All of the rooms need to be renovated, it's more of a hostel than a hotel.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Hilo Naniloa Hotel Aloha Adam, Thank you for taking the time to share your comments. We must agree with you our hotel is in dire need of a face lift. In the past six months since we took over the hotel we have been working very hard to address maintenance issues and begin the transformation. We are pleased to inform you that renovation will begin soon and we will be on our way to our new and improved look. We welcome you to return once renovation is finished to see a whole new hotel. Mahalo, Wendy K Guest Services Supervisor
From the check in the staff had a no care attitude . There were 2 guest in front of me one complained of no towels bad he would have called but there wasn't a phone in the room. The next person said that room was still not cleaned. So the hotel is under renovations but no where in the lobby is there signage that says that or the staff to say that to […] you until you inquire. I was sceptic and also I knew that I still would be charge for the night. So we checked in and then proceeded to our room. My husband laughed as I showed him an actual key attached to a diamond sharped key fob. The walk to our room was old and Muskie. The elevators was slow and had the smell of beer. As we walked to room the flooring was nice new tiles. As we got to our room and opened the door the floor again was tiles but the room smelled like a whole bottle of Lysol had spilled in there. The bathroom looked remodeled but hastily as there was paint droppings on the floor and wood was unevenly painted. Simple room 2bedside lamps, alarm clock, tv way up high near the roof . There was a wall unit with a tall closet unit the a long desk then an in clove for an old coffee pot the still has coffee in it. And a small refrig. I think the desk chair and the refrig was the only new things.. My concern was for SAFETY reasons there should be a phone in the room no exceptions and there was NOT a phone. When I mentioned this to the check out staff And she said was 'I know' Prices should be discounted Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Awesomely warm and friendly staff!"
I have never felt so welcomed and appreciated by everyone on staff as I felt at Naniloa, and I've stayed in a lot of hotels. It's not the most up-to-date hotel, and the rooms could have used a good reading chair besides the desk chair, but the rooms were modern and elegant. This is now my hotel in Hilo, HI. I will be back! :)Genuine Expedia guest review
"Was once a great place"
when we arrived at the hotel it was late at night and we were very tired from a full day of sightseeing. The hotel is going through renovation. You can see that in it's day is was a top notch resort. However that day was long in the past. The stores were all empty and closed, the facility was quite run down. Upon entering the room we were struck by […] it's sparseness. There was a barren bed in the middle of one wall with no bedspread. Quite uncomfortable. One plywood nightstand, a dated cabinet with an old TV. The bathroom was also made of plywood all tough it had a new sink. The tub had seen a better day. The surface was very worn down and it was quite slippery. The next morning I looked out the "Ocean View" window. The grounds were in disrepair and not kept up. The pool paint was worn and it looked quite green. Any resemblance to the picture online and the actual hotel was purely coincidental. Probably taken many many years ago Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Hilo Naniloa Hotel Aloha Mark, Thank you for taking the time to submit your comments. Yes you are correct, our hotel was once a great place, and it will be even better very soon. Within the last six months since we’ve taken over the hotel, we have been doing necessary maintenance work in preparation for renovation. We are pleased to announce that renovation should begin shortly and before long we will have a new look as the shining gem of Hilo. We welcome you to return and experience an even greater Naniloa. Lovely and clean rooms. Simple with beautiful views.Genuine Expedia guest review
Hotel is a work in progress but the room itself was clean and good sized for a family of 4 (two kids). Location was great - right on the bay with a great view.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Better on the Inside"
The hotel is undergoing renovations. The outside sill looks a bit rough and the wing at the other end of the hotel is obviously out of comission but our room had been redone recently and was nice. The view of Hilo bay was spectacular. There was no phone in the room, so if you needed anything, you would have to go down to the front desk.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Hilo Naniloa Hotel Thank you Sandra, for your comments. We are in process of revitalizing the entire property, with renovation to begin soon. We welcome you to return next year to see what a difference a year makes! Aloha!
"Hotel in need of overdue maintenance!"
I am from Hawaii and remember the Naniloa as being a very nice place. My daugher and I drove up and I wondered if I was at the right place. It is in quite a state of disrepair. Mildew and chipped paint everywhere. I checked in and got my room keys, yes real old fashioned keys. Got on the elevator and it was also in desparate need of maintenance. I was […] getting very nervous about the room, but was pleasantly surprised it appeared clean and somewhat renovated. However it looked as if they are using the old stained sheets to wrap the box springs, but the sheets on the bed were clean. The bathroom had this weird sliding door that didn't offer much privacy, but it had a nice shower and tiles and an updated sink. There are no phones in the room and the wireless is only available in the lobby. I was on the 6th floor and found out I had to go to the 7th floor to get ice. I found the "ice room" as it was written in sharpie on a piece of tape on the door. Horrible doesn't begin to describe this room. I took pictures to show my friends. I had a birdseye view of the pool and it also needs some attention. I had a beautiful view of coconut island from my room. It is so sad the hotel has fallen into such a state of disrepair. Response by Hilo Naniloa Hotel Aloha Denise, We, too, were saddened by the condition of this property. From the moment we assumed management of this hotel six months ago, we have been working hard to make much overdue repairs and prepare for an extensive renovation and revitalization. By year-end we will begin to have all new guest rooms, with state of the art guest conveniences. We will also have a beautiful new lobby, opened up to take advantage of our gorgeous view. A new restaurant will be able to satisfy your hunger, or bring you a drink as you lounge around the improved swimming pool. I promise that the next time you come, you will love it.
"Wasn't impressed at all!"
Very disappointed in this hotel. The hotel is being renovated, I think. The location of the hotel is wonderful, right on the water with great views. Furniture in lobby seemed dirty, had to wait for check-in (3pm) we waited until 3:30. Elevators were very dreary, not a good first impression. Rooms had a bed, a computer chair, refrigerator, coffee pot […] that didn't work. No dresser to put clothes, just a place to hang them up. TV was on top of a tall cabinet, had to look up, neck hurt after a while. Terrible reception, fuzzy. AC wasn't working, but Thanks to the maintenance man he fixed it and the room felt great. Bed was comfortable and clean sheets. The bathroom was the only saving grace, very nice, but it looked as though the free shampoo and conditioner was 1/4 empty, not sure if used before, Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Personnel were very accomodating, however hotel is very dated and appears to be going through a renovation. Rooms had no bed coverings, reserved a queen bed-only got two double beds, no phone. Lobby area very spartan and oldGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Convenient, but decrepit"
This is a very run-down hotel. The outside of the buildings look condemned, and the inside isn't much better. The room was surface clean, but it had clearly not been deep cleaned in a while. There was no carpet - all tile floors - which made sound travel throughout the hotel seem excessively loud. The TV had poor reception. There was no phone or wifi […] in the room. The one positive thing I noted is that the hotel is conveniently located near the Bay, near Downtown, near the Airport, and near the Highway. Despite the convenience, I would not stay here again. "Convenient but hotel has aged"
This hotel has seen better days. Last stayed here about 20 years ago and although the hotel is being renovated, we still had issues with our remodeled room. The a/c didn't work and although we informed the front desk and was told someone would be sent up, no one came to repair it. Since we were only staying one night, we didn't complain further. Calls […] to the front desk were not answered. Towels are in bad shape. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"A step above a truck stop"
Luckily we only used the room as a place to shower before our flight. Their "updated room" wasn't even finished. No moldings on the floor, tiles had leftover grout... Certainly not up to our standards however the choices are slim in Hilo.Genuine Expedia guest review
We had a nice, clean room with a wonderful view of the ocean and mountains. It was a little noisy in our room. The hotel is obviously undergoing renovations and will be very nice when it is completed. We would stay here again if we were back in Hilo. The price was very good. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Overall it was a nice stay. Ask for […] an oceanside view. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"4 day stay-cation, the eastside of the Big Island."
There's much to see, so it wasn't a "lounging around the hotel" quick vacation. Advise to look up information on sites, prior to seeing it in real life. Good weather and friendly surroundings. Nightly coqui frogs need attention, totally ruins the peacefulness of paradise. "Good view, good access to downtown"
In this area, only this hotel had enough spaces for parking (in other hotels, many cars were parked roadside). The room was clean and had good view for Mauna kea or the ocean. There are several places for eating and drinking within 10 min drive. The water of the bath tab was not drained.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
While my rating for the overall condition of the hotel was just average, I would recommend staying here because of other factors, including convenience of location, price, and room comfort.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel was near the Lili'uolani Garden and also the airport. The view from the lanai is wonderful. We just sat out there an talked one night. It is fairly basic hotel room. The keys are actual keys rather than card keys so they are a little cumbersome. Parking was an issue while we were there as they had an event going on. Since it rains so frequently […] in Hilo, walking to the hotel can be an issue. The staff was very nice and the room was clean. One issue is how tall the tub is. It was a little difficult to maneuver in and out of since I am 5'3. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"You get what you pay for"
The hotel looks like a run-down version of what used to be a nice hotel back in the 70's. The decor is outdated, the hotel is eerily empty, but it is unbeatably cheap if you are just looking to crash somewhere for a night or two. The elevators smell like rancid sweat, the floors in the rooms were filthy, but the bathrooms were amazingly renovated and […] remodeled. If you just looked at the bathroom, you'd think you were staying in a 4 star hotel. Also, the outdoor area is nice and lush with palm trees and an ocean view. So much potential, but I think the hotel just can't afford the upkeep. There was only wifi downstairs in the lobby, and there was no hot water for the showers. Overall conclusion: appropriate for the budget young traveler, not for honeymooners or families Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Beautiful views and friendly service."
We had a very nice time at the Hilo Naniloa Hotel. We had reserved a room with a king and a roll-away. That was too crowded and one corner was dirty. We told them at the desk. For $5 more per day we moved from the bay side to the ocean side. Which had a better view and a great balcony. Also, we had two doubles and a roll away and they fit fine. WiFi […] only in lobby, but it was beautiful and breezy. Helpful desk staff. Fun location. Would definitely stay there again -- but would ask to change rooms 'til it was just right. "Nice, but dated"
The location & view from this hotel is fabulous, & it's obvious that in it's heyday, it was probably quite a resort. Unfortunately, it is now dated, and leaves a lot to be desired. The rooms are clean & the service is good, but it ends there. There were no phones, irons, & only 1 mirror in the rooms. The walls were paper thin & you could continually […] hear the neighbors. My advice when taking the elevator is either use the stairs or say a prayer before loading. The "breakfast" is not even a snack really, & the free wi-fi that is advertised is misleading, because it is only if you sit to use it in the lobby. Great rate & convenient location . . . just make sure you have a car to get you around. Nothing to do at or near this hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Ok but could use some renovations."
Overall an ok hotel. Definitely older and in need of renovations. It was good enough for the price and besides who stays in the hotel while on the Big Island anyway? Just need it to store stuff, sleep and shower. Pros: - big rooms - windows open to let in fresh island breeze - great staff - nice grounds - open lobby that you can sit in and enjoy the […] view - close to airport - free parking with lots of space Cons: - needs some renovations. - free breakfast was just bread, mini muffins, coffee and fruit punch. - shower curtain was moldy. (I had to leave a note for housekeeping to change it for me.) - AC doesn't work well. (but then again why not open the window and let in the breeze) - no phone in room. Would've been helpful especially when a false fire alarm went off at 6 AM!! We had to go all the way down to the lobby to find out it was a mistake!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Fine for a quick stay"
If you are planning to stay one night then it's ok. Very basic, simple and clean. Just didn't like the fact that there was a door leading to another room inside my room with a huge gap under the door which basically you can hear what is going on in either room.I guess if you have kids sleeping in the other room then it's ok.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
