"Old time awesome!"
This was a really nice experience. The entire staff was friendly and helpful, right down to the valet guys. They had good advice on places to eat, happy hours, and an overall good outlook on things that made it a pleasure to be there. I'll definitely be back!Genuine Expedia guest review

This Hotel is right in down town Portland, which probably the best feature. The room was really small and we were hoping for a view, which ended up being of a wall. I liked that it was an old hotel, but unfortunately it show it age too. Our room had nice beds and a nice big tv, but that was it. The bathroom had a cracked toilet and water stains on the […] walls. I felt for $200 something a night it would be a little nicer. I will probably look else where next time in Portland. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Response by The Benson Hotel, A Coast Hotel Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review of your recent stay with us. We are very pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay. We look forward to your next visit!
This place was beautiful! Right in the middle of downtown, which makes it a quick walk to anything! We will definitely be coming back here next year! I love downtown Stumptown! The only thing is be prepared to spend about $20 a day to park at the parking structure connected to the hotel. I'm sure if you're ok walking a couple blocks you can find it […] much cheaper. Also, they offer valet but that cost $31 a day. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The staff at The Benson were wonderful. Especially Tim at the Concierge Desk. He not only got us a reservation for a popular restaurant on a Friday night, but also had the restaurant send over a complimentary appetizer. The room was great and the bed was amazingly comfortable...the bathroom however was kind of small and there was no room around the […] sink for anything. The location was perfect as I felt like I was in the middle of everything I wanted to see downtown. Overall, I would highly recommend The Benson and am looking forward to visiting again. We had a great stay. Close to Pearl district as well as downtown and shopping area. Very nice lobby, very old school wood panel.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Perfect for the downtown experience"
Portland is such a beautiful and walk-able city, and this hotel is in the perfect downtown location central to all the activities that were taking place the 2 days we were in town. Within easy walking distance shopping areas, beautiful parks, the river and world famous Voodoo Doughnuts Shop. There is also a map for all things walkers should see, ask […] the hotel or visitor center about it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"OK, but try others first"
My room was clean and comfortable except for the lack of any closet or other place to hang clothes (save the bathroom door towel hook). I'm lucky I was alone on this trip or my companion would've been pretty upset! There was a nice chest of small drawers. The bathroom had a nice shower (tall shower head, good pressure) and a shelving unit in the small […] space. Greeting and atmosphere at front desk were luke warm. If you skip the valet (the one who came up to me was very nice), note that the garage across the street is a bit dodgy. Self-parked just a little further down Broadway on the right at a nice bank building garage. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Wonderful historic hotel in a great location"
Had a great time looking around the hotel. We got in late and when we went to get a bite to eat at the hotel restaurant the wait staff was great and the food was wonderful. Wish we would have gotten there earlier so we could have enjoyed the area a little more.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Good quality, room a little stuffy if hot-natured"
Generally a great, comfortable hotel and very friendly/helpful staff. My only issue was for someone that gets hot easily (like me), it was a little stuffy. I had the fan on high and the AC cranked down to 60 degrees and it was still warm. Fortunately, the windows open a bit so we were able to get better airflow. For cold-natured individuals, this hotel […] would be great. I will visit them again, just not in the summer :). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great old school hotel"
We loved the classic grand hotel feel. Great service. Downtown location was excellent. We were able to easily walk to Jeld=Wen field for a soccer game. Close to food carts, Powell's books, Voodoo donuts, and Chinatown.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good not Great."
The Jr. Suite was not as modern or spacious as it looked in the photo.Genuine Expedia guest review
I brought my sister to Portland for the first time last weekend and we were very lucky to stay in the benson! It was absolutely beautiful and grand! We loved the turndown service complete with chocolates! Yum. It also has memory foam mattresses that were exquisite! I definitely recommend this hotel for its vintage appeal and great service!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"great place to stay!"
What a great location. Only a short walk to Powell's and Voodoo Donuts. Also close to the mall and great restaurants. The staff were very helpful. We got in before noon and our room was ready early. I would stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel is truly a gem. We felt very welcome by everyone. The location is perfect - walking distance to Downtown, the Pearl District, most importantly Powell's Books. The lobby and bar are inviting you to linger. So comfortable! The rooms are good size for an older hotel but show the age in places like bathroom and doors, but are super clean and feature […] the most comfortable beds ever. We will return. The staff were very polite, professional, and courteous. The room on the other hand was very disappointing. Based on the reputation of the hotel, I expected a fair amount more than we received. Upon entrance to the room, it wreaked of smoke. As this is a non-smoking hotel I was taken aback. Furthermore I had my five year old daughter with us and thus […] was not pleased that she would need to put up with this. Frankly, shame on me for not immediately changing rooms, but I was too exhausted to go through the process of lugging my luggage down, going through the explanation, having apologetic excuses, etc. I figured I would simply notify the staff when I went down to the lobby (which I did), and leave it at that. The smell eventually dissipated, but came back oddly if we turned on the A/C. Another item that bothered me was that there was noticeable red and black fungus within the bathroom area. Overall the room seem tired and worn. A last issue that comes to mind is that we had ordered dessert from room service and the order was wrong when it arrived at our room. My daughter was going to bed soon, so I simply took what was proffered and paid the bill when we checked out the next morning. Needless to say I was disappointed and will not be coming back. There was not one item that I could point to that was off the hook, but the cumulative effect took its toll. The stay certainly did not exceed any expectations by a long shot. "Great downtown location. Beautiful old historical"
Prefect location to eat, shop and drink your way thru Portland. Lovely building, friendly staff, GREAT beds. We would recommend this property.Genuine Expedia guest review
I'd never stay here again. For a 4 star hotel the lobby gives a false impression of what's upstairs. Upon arrival the bottom of the refrigerator was coated with a sticky substance and actually had mold growing in it. The bathroom walls felt greasy and there were hairs sticking to the walls. One of the lamps was missing a light bulb. Despite there being […] 2 of us we were given 1 bathrobe. Ultimately, after 2 days & 2 requests, everything except the bathroom walls got corrected.---Yet one of the men at the concierge was an idiot; several questions he did not know the answer to & once he sent us walking in the wrong direction.---Also the TV was small, the channels limited, & scrolling through the hotel TV guide was beyond frustrating.----The only positive thing about this hotel is the location. Next time I'll pitch a tent. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
We had a junior suite, and it was a tish smaller than I expected...very narrow. But the windows open, the bed was comfy, and the shower and tv worked great. Only thing keeping it from a 5 is some slight cleanliness issues---the tv cabinet had some water spots (like a damp rag was used to clean it and some soapy drips dehydrated).Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great hotel in Portland"
The hotel is great overall with a location that is central to downtown Portland. The room was quiet with comfortable beds. My only complaints are that the closet was less than tiny and the paint in the bathroom showed signs of aging. Overall, I was very pleased with our stay and would stay at The Benson Hotel again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Charming Hotel offering easy access"
I have stayed at the Benson Hotel many times through the years. While it shows its age, it is comfortable, clean and charming. The staff is helpful and supportive of our needs. My only problem is that I do not like Temperpedic mattresses very much.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Very good location."
Great location. Was able to walk to just about everything. They need to have a free shuttle from the airport instead of having to pay for for the hotel shuttle from the airport. Service in the hotel was great. Enjoyed what I call "old world" glamor.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Gracious old Dame"
Gorgeous old but impeccably kept hotel. You feel as if you're back in a gentler time, where service is paramount.Genuine Expedia guest review
My only disappointment was there used to be a beautiful coffee urn S well as tea and wonderful fruit bowl to be able to enjoy at the lobby area. Very disappointing with such a wonderful facility. :((Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not what we expected"
Advertised TempurPedic luxury beds - No way... it was an over used and lumpy spring mattress. Excellent Front Desk personnel (friendly, supportive, professional, helpful). Unfortunately had to ask twice to get coffee in the room for the coffee maker. Some of the Valet were very friendly and supportive, others too busy chatting with their buddies to […] be of much help. Tiny, tiny bar in the hotel lobby and too crowded to enjoy. They did not replace the bar soap for our bathroom sink all week. Room was cleaned to perfection daily with turn-down service at night. Gorgeous lobby ceiling. Don't stay in a room across from Elements because you'll hear a beeping sound (similar to an OSHA beeping) all day and all night from the buildings garage door every time it opens and closes. The Hotel location was excellent and very easy to navigate to from anywhere. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The Benson is located in downtown Portland. This an old school hotel with beautiful lobby and excellent food service. The staff was superb and the wait staff at the restaurant went out of their way to be on the spot servicing all our needs.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Historic Hotel in the Heart of Downtown Portland"
Literally blocks from anywhere: Powell's Bookstore, brewery district, Voodoo Donuts, Pioneer Square, Chinatown/Chinese Gardens, river walk, light rail lines ($2 day pass for seniors). Great breakfast with even greater wait staff (kudos to Bobby, especially). Close to many great eateries. Friendly helpful people in a great city.Genuine Expedia guest review
"This hotel needs a makeover!"
My room was the size of a closet! When I called the front desk to complain, they explained that this was a "historic hotel" and that the room was in fact what I had booked. The door was also razor-thin so I could hear all happenings in the hallway. The decor is also in need of renovation by about 30 years!. I would never stay here again or recommend […] it. The staff were friendly and helpful and the location was great. Although the room was a bit small, which was expected, it was clean, well-supplied, and well-maintained. "poor experience-in our choice of a hotel"
When booking the room we expected it to be larger after looking at the video of the rooms. The shower had no safety bars- not even a rubber mat so you wouldn't fall. We had to ask for towels, toilet paper, hangers. Bathroom grouting black. One phone broken..It was a depressing room !Genuine Expedia guest review
The atmosphere is very nice in the lobby. The room was not what we expected for the price. Really would have liked a fridge to use. Upon entering the room for the 1st time the desk had a bobby pin sitting in the middle of it which led to questions of the cleaning service. Also in the bathroom there was no soap to wash hands, was glad to have soap packed […] in my bag. Feel if you pay for excellence the room should be spotless and the requires items in the bathroom should be provided. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Beds very comfortable. Center nightstand front not clean. NO jacuzzi or hotel access to one - did the STP and really needed that to recuperate. was referred to a spa nearby. Who wants to pay premium for a room and then have to pay seperately for an amenity like that.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Classic elegance in downtown Portland."
The Benson is a classic hotel; built in 1913 it has the kind of style that you don’t see in buildings anymore. The staff was excellent all the way through, starting with the valet. Registration was quick and easy. Each staff member I encountered (there were two between registration and my room) asked if they could be of service and inquired if I needed […] to know anything about Portland or where to grab a bite. I like that kind of service, and if I didn’t already have my evening planned out I would have taken them up on their offer. The room was smaller than your average hotel room today, but that didn’t bother me a bit. The Benson still does things that have gone by the wayside in most hotels, like offering turndown service (complete with mints on the pillows) and uniformed bellhops and concierge staff. The Benson is in a great location in downtown Portland and is within easy walking distance of most of the downtown attractions and great restaurants. All in all the Benson is a great place to stay. "Classic History in Portland"
Nice location for walkers. Parking was expensive and you may not need a car. We did the STP and parked our bikes in our rooms.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Hotel right in the heart of the city. Close to fashionable Pearl District. Nice that the room offered Starbuck coffee & coffee maker. We discovered that the best way to reach hotel from the airport was via the Tri Met MAX train that has a station just 4 short blocks from the hotel. Unfortunately, when I'd called before our trip to get advice on transportation […] from the airport, the girl who answered the phone suggested a taxi, claiming it would be just as cheap as their shuttle that costs $14. However, it cost us $40 one way. Other than that, we enjoyed the hotel's location and very comfortable bed. We'd stay there again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Nice hotel in a good location"
We were able to walk and take public transit to see Portland while we were there. There was only one neighborhood we went to where we had to use a cab bc transit was not an option and it would have been too far to walk in a reasonable amount of time.Genuine Expedia guest review
