"Definite room for improvement."
For our stay of four nights, there was only ever one of the two lifts working. The door for the balcony wouldn't slide, however the street noise was unbearable most of the time so probably wouldn't have used it anyway. TV never functioned. Had to return the car 3 days early as city parking is prohibitively expensive. Sydney is an expensive place so this hotel was reasonable value considering it's location, but it is in desperate need of an facelift. "Very convenient and reasonably priced"
We spent two nights there. In an expensive city it is good to be able to self cater for at least some of your meals, so it was good to be able to make our own breakfasts and lunches. First room we got was dirty and had a very musky smell. Second swipe card to the room didn't work. No towels in the room, so we had to collect some from reception. TV didn't work. One of the two lifts didn't work for the whole stay, so sometimes it took forever to leave the building or get to our room. During the night we woke to a tapping sound. It […] was the air conditioning unit dripping onto our camera bag. (Hence reason for musky smell) Fortunately the bag was water resistant. After a number of phone calls to reception about the different issues as we discovered them, we were upgraded into a much nicer, newly renovated apartment. We arrived here mid-week and initially we thought we'd got a great hotel, the lobby looks very professional and the staff were great - we got the key's etc and that's where the great experience stopped, 1 lift was broken so we had to wait 15 minutes to get to our room (after using the service lift!). We walked into our room and it wasn't very appealing […] at all, very brown and dated! The bathroom was even worse, mould in places, rust patches in the bath and cracks in places as well! The bed's we're like sleeping on concrete, not a comfortable sleep at all and very noisey due to only single glazed windows! "Keep on Looking Elsewhere"
This place is being grossly misrepresented. Don't even bother considering it unless you enjoy run-down, dirty, smelly hotels. If we hadn't prepaid our room we would have walked out after the first night. The shame of it is, this hotel has good "bones" and a good central location. It could be quite nice if it was given a complete makeover. Until then...stay […] away! Upon arrival we noted the dirty and shabby condition of the lobby. Outside of the elevator was the entrance to the restaurant which was dirty and in need of paint. Most of the elevator buttons no longer lit up nor did the floor indicator outside. Inside the melamine was cracked and chipped. (By the next day one of the two elevators had stopped working and still wasn't repaired when we left 4 days later). Our room smelled like dirty carpet. We complained and the "cleaned" the carpet the next day but we ended up sleeping with the balcony door open to control the stench. We asked to be moved to another room but were told we were already in one of their "4 star" rooms. Basically, we held our noses and spent as little time as possible in the hotel. Thank God Sydney has lots to do! The Oaks is also an apartment hotel with a number of "colorful" permanent residents. I won't elaborate further on these residents as the statement speaks for itself. "Low priority choice in Sydney CBD"
The hotel, while situated in a prime location, is an old and behind-the-times facility. It is dated, seems not to have been painted in decades and does not offer the commodities most hotels of this class do. While the room ("3.5 Star Apartment") was clean and had a view of Hyde Park, the decor was very humble and minimalist,its windows had not been […] washed in years and were covered in thick dust. The toilet tank cover was cracked, the bathtub contained stains and sreaks and the soap holder was rusty and corroded. The floor broadloom was undulated and not attached in all areas. No wireless internet in the rooms (only wired), no breakfast at the hotel. I only stayed there because of unavailability of nearby hotels on my travel dates. We stayed in the 3.5 star studio. It has a perfect location overlooking Hyde park, right on the cnr or Oxford st so going out and getting buses was easy. Our family of 4 needed an affordable 2 bedroom apartment style hotel. The hotel is conveniently located near restaurants, stores, within walking distance to Circular Quay, Darling Harbour and just across beautiful Hyde Park. Smelled like paint though it did look like they were in the process of refurbishment. The bathroom was really annoying. Lighting was annoying no light above the mirror, couldn't see to shave, apply make up, or do hair. Plug in sink was useless didn't hold water. Very disappointed that hotel seemed stuck in 1980s. Staff was excellent, linens clean and small white goods had been replaced. The apartment was comfortable but the highlight was the location. The bathroom needed some renovation eg tiles coming off the wall and one of the windows kept blowing open in high winds. Comfortable bedroom, recently and tastefully refurbished, as was the bathroom. The shower was fantastic and very spacious. Great storage in both rooms for clothes and toiletries etc. Well equipped kitchen with good facilities for cooking etc. Our only complaint would have been that the air conditioner was very noisy so we chose not to use it and opened […] the windows instead. Fortunately we were in a back room so the outside traffic noise was not too disturbing overnight. We would have preferred to use the air conditioner to cool the room though. Was very disappointed. We arrived at 1.30 check-in was 2 so fair enough that we couldn't go to our room. We arrived back at 4 and the lady serving us didn't even know that we had already check in even after asking our reservation name. We went to our room and the air con was broken. It was stifling hot. Also we booked for 2 single bed but there was […] only one double. When we called about it we were told that they didn't not realise that the air-con was broken, even though the windows were open. It's took them 2hrs to find fan. They couldn't move us from our room as they were booked out. But they could move us the next night. The staff didn't seem sincere with there apologies and didn't make us feel any happier about the situation. Overall, if the customer service, them actually making us feel welcome was better we wouldn't have been so upset but they just seemed not to care. This wasn't the first time that we have stayed with Oaks we are usually so happy with there hotels and staff, we were expecting such a high standard especially in the heart of Sydney.
