A short guide to Cultural District - Japantown

Nearby, City Hall’s golden dome sparkles amid the Civic Center’s concrete gray. The live arts thrive at the San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center, one of the nation’s largest. A five-tiered Peace Pagoda marks Japantown. Castro District, the city’s main gay neighborhood, is a short ride away, as is Haight-Ashbury, the counterculture bastion that is a gateway to Golden Gate Park.

If you don't need or want to stay right downtown, the Majestic is a great location because I found on street parking 3 nights in a row, avoiding the $25-$50 charges at some hotels. Rooms are small but comfy, bartender pours a decent pour, Internet is free in lobby (and also worked in my room), and you can get a continental breakfast (with great Guatemalen fair trade coffee) at a good price. If you like the old Victorian look, this is a great place.

I stayed here for 4 nights on business and was really pleased that I picked the place. It has a classic feeling, prompt service and really nice rooms. It is not a corporate chain and you are treated like a valued customer. The location is central to everything while being a bit outside the busiest parts of town. One small downside is that outside of a couple nice cafes and the hotel kitchen, you may have to walk for 10 minutes or so to find a good restaurant. But it's a nice area to walk in, so it all works out! All in all I'd give this place 4.5 stars.

First impressions from the outside are positive. It looks fairly clean and impressive, and when you enter the lobby area there is nothing to detract from this view. However, there is a weird, dated feel to the hotel which is probably accentuated by the lift which is incredibly slow and, well, strange (especially having just been on the Hollywood Hotel ride in Disney!). Exiting the lift the corridors again have a dated feel about them. The rooms are perfectly clean and comfortable and that is the real test afterall. For the price, and I'm comparing the hotel to similar prices in other cities visited in the US an average 3 is warranted. Things to note: $25 per night to park your car so be warned - but this is not unusual or that expensive for SF and, The hotel is also a good mile from anywhere of any note, although the transport links (if you use them, I walked) are pretty good into the centre for connections.

The management can not clean the carpeting every day The neighborhood is the most quiet place I have found in SF. There is a small corner store just one block away. And Muni Bus lines two blocks away at Van Ness Ave. I recommend this hotel for people who want a bit of solitude from the racket and activity of downtown.

I like the Hotel Majestic. I have stayed there several times. Its location within a short walk of some friends of mine, and that is one of the reasons I like it, but I am also attracted by the feeling that you have somehow stepped back in time once you enter the lobby. The rooms are charming -- yes some of them are small, but I have always felt comfortable, and I am a big guy. On this last trip, there were several things that just weren't working correctly in the room -- the TV was a non-starter (it apparently couldn't be fixed, their only solution was to offer to move me, but I was too busy working to be able to find time to repack and move.) The window shade didn't close the entire way, which meant that my first floor room could pretty much have been visible to anyone who really wanted to take the trouble to peek in on me at night -- a few bolsters from the bed propped up against that window readily fixed that situation. Those are the kinds of things that can go awry at The Majestic. However, the staff are friendly and do try to help even though the results may not remedy the situation. Somehow I don't mind that much. Eating and Drinking: I am not a bar person, but the bar at The Majestic is friendly and frequently has a small crowd of chatty folks. A few years ago, I had several meals in the restaurant -- why would anyone go to a hotel restaurant in San Francisco? Well, the food was amazingly delicious -- interesting and inspired. The service was attentive without being overbearing. These meals in this setting of simple elegance providing quietly restorative endings to some difficult days of work. And I think that best says why I like The Majestic and have returned to it. Somehow, tatty though it may be in certain ways, it is charming and attractive.

This happens to be one of my favorite areas to stay in SF. It is fairly quiet and removed from the normal tourist attractions. I normally stay at the Queen Anne Hotel down the street, but the hotels.com price was pretty good so I thought I would try the Mejestic. It was pretty much what I expected. The hotel is in good shape. My room was nice for a single. It was an interior room so there was not much of a view, but I've come to expect that from singles. So, the room was nice, the hotel was quiet, the staff was friendly and it is a nice location. The only downside is the lack of parking. I was always able to find a spot on the street within a couple blocks of the hotel, but it is 2-hour parking during the day so you cannot just leave the car there all day.

My biggetst issue is actually with the Hotels.com info on this hotel. They mention there is parking, but what they don't mention is that it's valet for $25 a day. Parking in the surrounding streets is 2-hour until 6pm. As for the hotel, the lobby/bar/cafe are magnificent. My room was a little small and could use a remodeling, including a new bed. The door had a large gap on the bottom and the maids woke me up early every morning with their noise. My room was also on a slant which was kind of awkward, especially in bed. The claw foot tub was nice, but when taking a shower the pressure was weak and the curtains annoyed me. Overall I liked it's quaintness though, and it's close to Japan Town, which is why I chose it. I would recommend this hotel, just try not to get room #400.

They offer free internet in the lobby also which was very great. A cafe and bar on site too. Parking in the area is luck of the draw. They have parking for 25 bucks a day at the hotel, but being that there prices were so great it didn't really matter. Totally stay at this place if you can, it's amazing!!!!

Being some distance from the main tourist attractions and major hotels is both good and bad. It's good because there are no crowds and the street is quiet. It's bad because transportation isn't always convenient. It won't happen to most visitors, but we had the misfortune of arriving in SF during a heat wave (92 degrees F). With only a small window for ventilation, our first evening was a bit uncomfortable.

However, it's not really within walking distance to anything (Union Square, Fisherman's Wharf, a BART station), and it took forever to get a cab. I would say that you might as well spend the extra money to stay near where you want to be, because you're going to spend it in cabs if you stay here. That is, unless you are staying in SF when it's hot, because this hotel has no AC, and it was sweltering.

Also, once at 5:30 am and once at 9:30 am, the fire alarm went off for no reason. I checked out in the hall at 9:30, the second time it went off, and the housekeeping lady told me not to worry about it. We were not happy about that. Other than that, it was a pleasant stay.

Lovely room, high ceilings, beautiful furnishings, comfy bed, bath nicely appointed. I would recommend to any who ask - and I'll be back!

This room windows faced into an office building that seems to do business at night. This room also overlooked the fire escape that was being used as a party meeting place and smoking lounge. I would have asked for a discount but I had already pre payed hotel.com.

The staff wasn't overly friendly. I'm the kind of person who likes eye contact and a warm hello, especially when I'm spending money! But the staff was cordial, the night manager, however, was extremely helpful and friendly. The rooms were nicely decorated, if not worn down (the drapes where really dirty). It was in a great location, away from the noise of buses and people, and within easy walking distance of all the major Muni lines. Overall, I felt satisfied with the hotel for what I paid.

Couzy, quaint hotel. It was not the worst hotel I have ever stayed in but it did not exceed my expectations. The room itself was small, but nice (in a different way). The biggest let down was the customer service. I had requested some extra ammenities prior to the visit and they were not added to the room nor did the staff follow up to see that I received them until it came time to check out and I had to ask for them to be removed from my bill.

What a find! This is a lovely little hotel with gorgeous antique furnishings and French and English window treatments and canopies. Right in the middle of San Francisco! The manager on duty went out of his way to find us a room we could check into at 11am after travelling since 3am so we were very grateful to check in early and be able to take a nap. The newly reopened Cafe Majestic is getting rave reviews for gourmet food. All in all, a charming and romantic boutique hotel at a great price. Clean and comfortable with great service.
