Who ever heard of a hotel where there are not enough parking spaces for the hotel room renters and when asked, you are told to just go find your own parking on the street. The key locking security for the rooms is very out dated that we needed to take all vaulables with us when we left the room.

Located in a better part of town, this property should have 0 stars! It is old, run down, poorly maintained and poorly managed. The hallways have paint peeling and are dark and dingy. A few of the lights do not work. The room (a 'superior' room, at that!) had two beds, neither of which had been renewed for decades! The springs were all shot and the beds sloped. The décor (?) went out in the early 60s. The carpet was filthy and sticky. The air-conditioner gave you two choices - sleep or keep cool. It would put a Boeing 747 to shame. Uncle Billy's answer was to provide earplugs! The mold in the bathroom was thriving - the grout in places was black. Their continental breakfast - I have served better breakfasts in soup kitchens. To give you an idea of how far in the past these folks are, the rooms have brass keys (none of this new-fangled electronic keys, thank you very much) - you have to deposit $20 per key and if you do not return them (I do not know why you would not!) you forfeit your money.

There are only a few hotels in that area and we just wanted to stay a night or two to view the volcano. Didn't want to pay a lot to just basically sleep there. Cute place. not as fancy as most condos in Hawaii, but OK. bed was comfortable. Had breakfast, and a store next door. I loved the sound of the frogs on our side of the hotel.

Only stayed one nite but it was enough. The room was clean but musty, the bed mattress felt like it has not been changed since the opening day of the hotel. There was no place to park our car after 7PM.Nice location for a hotel but seriously,it needs major renovation and updating in there interior rooms. They should not rent their rooms in the ground floor. What a shame to charge $90.00 for a room that has a window looking at the ground of the pool. It felt like a prison cell, no closets and the bedding is just as bad.

Location is perfect! The area is gorgeous with beautiful banyan trees along the entire street, ocean in the back yard and picturesque park a short walk down the road. The hotel needs some TLC. It rained the entire time we were there and we saw all the leaks throughout the hotel. The hotel grounds were lovely! It has the potential to be so much more. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and the price was right!

Hotel is old but very comfortable. Birds are definitely loud but you can close up the room and run the AC aT bed time. I made the reservation on line and it was for four people. The online service does not adjust for more than two people so my bill was higher than anticipated(ver disappointing). Unfortunately that is what I will remember about this stay.

The hotel is a bit older, and since it is in Hilo, you can see more of the wear on the building due to daily rain falling. However, the location is ideal and is right near the water of Hilo Bay. The one major problem I had was that I was sharing the room with my sister and brother-in-law, and used the second bed next to the window. However, the bed was right in front of the air conditioning unit, which was positioned low and parallel to the bed. We had to turn the air on and off throughout the night, because if it was off, the room would be too warm. If we left it on, then the cold air was chilling my body and back, and I had to put some pillows at my back to provide a block against the cold air blowing directly on me. They need to position the air conditioner in a different location. The staff was great though, very helpful and accomodating. I especially enjoyed the continental breakfast in the morning, which had plenty of fresh cut papaya as well as bread, juices and coffee. The locations was just a few minutes drive away from downtown Hilo, with little shops, a couple of cute restaurants, a small daily Farmer's Market with wonderful fresh and inexpensive produce and a very interesting and educational Lyman Museum nearby.

This hotel is one of the worst I've stayed in, and I've stayed in many. Where to start? The Pros: friendly staff and in-room coffee maker, that's it; literally. Cons: uncomfortable beds, ancient window A/C that was loud, blew in your face at night, and it was either on and cold or you had to get out of bed to turn it off and it quickly got hot: no in between. The hotel is in desperate need of an upgrade, the location is not the best as there is two abandoned hotels next to it and the darn frogs at night are constantly "singing". The free "breakfast" is a joke, the pool was closed. I could go on, but suffice to say I would not stay again. Very disappointed.

Uncle Billy's staff were very nice. 2nd floor room had nice view of bay. Beds comfortable. Daily room cleanup was fine, but one day no new glasses provided and coffee maker not cleaned or coffee refreshed. Continental Breakfast was okay: papaya, toast, coffee. Rooms were clean, but new rugs, or tile is needed. Hall rugs need replacement. This hotel was easy to find from the airport on Banyan Road, lined with a Banyan tree canopy with easy access to trips around the southern and northern side of the island.

I booked at this hotel only because there wasn't much else available at the time. My expectations were low based on many of the reviews I read. However, I ended up being pleasantly surprised. Pros: Helpful staff Clean room Plenty of hot water and good water pressure Air conditioning worked No bugs View of Hilo Bay from my window Quiet (the frogs didn't bother me, but earplugs are provided in case it's a problem for someone) Beautiful grounds around the hotel; the pool wasn't operational but that didn't matter to me Nice location since it's just off the bay. Right down the street is Liliuokalani Gardens, which are beautiful. Cons Limited parking in the lot. Had to find a spot on the street, but it was close by. Dingy lobby and hallways I was on the 2nd floor and had to carry my luggage up a few stairs. There's an elevator for the higher floors. Room felt a little musty (but it was clean!) The bed wasn't comfortable, but that didn't surprise me. Staying at Uncle Billy's is all about managing your expectations going in. Don't expect it to be comparable to a Westin, Marriott or Hilton. I was happy with no bugs, cleanliness, and quiet -- and considered the nice location to be a plus.

I stayed here last year, and it has gone down hill since then. The sound of the insects coming from the interior court is impossible to drown out with the old-fashioned slat-windows and the single window fan. There is a restaurant/bar next door, and you share a parking lot with a gift-store and deli, which is convenient. It's ok when you're traveling on a budget, but I'll probably try somewhere else next time.

We stayed for one night to take a volcano tour for the day. We drove over from Kona. The front desk was kind and informative. The elevator was shaky so we took the stairs after that. There was a large dead cockroach in the hallway. Some rooms had no numbers so it was difficult to find our room. The room was standard, two beds. The bathroom needs updating. The carpet looked like it was from the 60s and needs replacing. The free breakfast was really sad; toast, English muffins, a mini muffin, lots of papaya, juice and coffee. Not really a breakfast to me. If you need a place just for the night, Uncle Billy's is ok, but for the week, not worth it. Invest a little more for a updated place. I payed over a hundred for this night!

Very outdated hotel lacking in charm and comfort. Hotel staff were all gloomy and acted like they hated their jobs. Rooms are simple, haven't been updated except maybe the mattresses. Japanese Garden out back looked like no one had tended it in decades. About the only "plus" is the locale and adjoining Banyan Restaurant. Hotel "breakfast" is a joke; instead go next door for Baker Tom's Malasadas. They are phenomenal!!!

It is an older hotel, the staff were very nice, the breakfast was spartan, but the rate was reasonable considering we booked it the night before and it included breakfast ($105 and we are family of 5). We booked it for one night so we did not have to return to Kona when driving around the island and we wanted to see the volcanoes at night. The bathroom was not cleaned on the floor and a they left a dirty towel hanging on the back of the door, so that grossed us out - but everything else was just fine.

Have stayed at uncle Billy's many times. Will definitely stay there again when we visit Hilo. Hotel has old Hawaii charm and guests are treated like family. The location is perfect. The views of Hilo Bay outstanding. Spent 4th of July Bay side watching the firework display. The best ice cream ever at Uncle Billy's general store. The downside, the elevator was down our whole visit (six days). I am handicapped and cannot do stairs, staff quickly accommodated by putting my family and I in ground floor rooms. My son and his family were moved when a leak in room above them caused water problem. They were upgraded to a larger room. Definitely could use some minor up grades but overall the best place to stay. Not flashly or modern like other big resort hotels but very comfortable and beautiful.

Old style hotel, not a fancy one for sure. Walls are thin, but I don't mind using earplugs (and anyway the frogs outside are much louder) so not a big issue for me. For such low price the rooms are clean ans spacious, the view is ok and all rooms have a Lanai. The free breakfast is simple but efficient. The hotel is near the airport so conveniently located, and has several on-site amenities (restaurant, grocery store) that make it a good compromise.

This is a small hotel in Hilo. The free breakfast was fruit (papaya), mini muffins or toast, juice and coffee. The parking area is not adequate for the number of cars/rooms. There is street parking but that is also limited. The beds and pillows were comfortable.Housekeeping forgot to leave Kleenex when the box was empty but I asked at the front desk and they had some brought up before we returned to our room from dinner. The wireless internet in the room was hard to connect to but we were told it was better in the lobby.

the facility is old and in need of some major repair. I experienced some termites in my room. basically some major remodeling of the guest rooms would be money will spent. I suppose that the occupancy rate is up because it's a less expensive place to stay. Ok for business and a place to sleep. The staff was nice enough, but I generally don't require much assistance. The internet connection in the guest rooms in less than dependable.

Location was nice, easy access to parks beaches and dining. Only a 40 minute drive to Volcanos National park. Not enough parking for all guests so you may have to park out on street across from hotel. Room was very smelly, musty/moldy damp smelling, others we checked were the same. Was kind of loud at night with open courtyard between rooms. Walls were thin could here all of our neighbors conversations. But the tree frogs barking at night was nice and helped drown out the sounds of people. If you want something inexpensive on the Hilo side of the Big Island, its OK don't have any others to compare to in the area.

Ideal location with a very nice view, the staff is welcoming, all this being predictable in Hawaii. The building is in urgent need of repairs, chipping concrete, rotting wood, rust are visible everywhere. However, the real problem is the noise level. My room was facing the courtyard and the accumulative noise from the window air conditioners reached the lower 80 dB which is the sound level of a busy street or your alarm clock. Even the countless koki frogs couldn't cover it. Closing the louver windows did not help much. To make things worse, the communicating door between the rooms seems to be made of paper, you can follow your neighbors' conversations and TV programs. In my case my neighbor turned on her TV at 4:15 am... I also experienced the snoring tenor and the jet lag young kids. I ended up sleeping OK the last night after moving my bed and barricading the communicating door with the couch plus the chairs pillows.

The staff and hotel location were super. The place is old, and for their prices you can't expect 4 star resort. But room was clean and comfortable, and we loved it. You could easily use this place to visit volcano national park which is only 40 min drive away.
