The hotel was great. We loved the rooms. No complaints in that regard. This was my third time staying at the Cromwell. The only problem I had this time was with the Internet. Wi-fi would not work in rooms as advertised. This was a problem for me as that I need a WiFi connection for work. I had to go to the hotel lobby to try to get a connection and […] the service was still rather spotty. Staff stated that it was a known problem. Great location, clean room.... I have stayed in a lot of hotels in Europe, and this hotel room was SMALL even by European standards. The room was freezing cold when we arrived and didn't actually feel warm until the next morning even though the heater ran all night. Fairly shocked to find I'd been assigned a basement room, but kept an open mind. The room never got warm, as there was a continuous damp draft, the carpet had large bumps underneath, which you trip over when walking on the floor, and several light bulbs were burned out. I have been to London many times and this was by far THE WORST experience ever. I was initially shown to a room with hair on the sheets, dried blood on a bathroom towel, fingerprints everywhere, and dirty walls. When I complained, I was shown to a new room with little apology; the staff seemed to think I was just being picky. Upon returning the next […] evening, when the outside air was -1 Celsius, I entered my room to find it at 8 degrees! When I reported the problem, I was asked if while I was away, I had left my extra room key in the slot just inside the door. I had not. I was told that someone should have informed me when I checked in to do so in order to have constant heat. When I pointed out that a system which requires a room key for lights (and in this case ALSO heat) in intended to conserve energy, and like most hotels guests take their key with them. I was met with a blank stare. So, at 2:00am, with no maintenance staff on call, I had to wait almost an hour to get the heat back on -- which is why they leave it on all the time. I asked the desk for a an herbal tea to warm me up; I was brought an unwrapped teabag in a bare hand and told to heat some water in my room. This hotel is poorly managed and, as an American, I assure you that it does NOT live up to the standard this U.S. franchise is known for. I urge anyone to consider other options... especially in winter. Read more

The decor and styling were modern but the room had a musty almost moldy smell that I assume was from the lack of ventalation and possibly an air conditioning unit that was not properly drained. The first problem was a dangerous narrow staircase to the cellar, there was not enough room to carry your luggage beside you I had to let my luggage fall to the bottom on its own. There was a mix-up with our airport transportation when we were leaving the morning of August 30. Room was tiny, you can't open the door all the way because it would hit the bed. Bathroom was nice but small, the shower was probably the best feature of the room as it is really nice with strong water pressure. Bed was comfy but definitely not what I would consider a 4* hotel because of the room size.

The stay at this hotel was absolutely terrible, I will never ever stay here again. Everyone who worked there had difficulty speaking English and it was a task to communicate with them on even a basic level - check in and out was a disaster. The power went out more than once in our room while there, the internet went out and was so bad that I had to […] go to the nearby Starbucks to access my work emails! And this was not a cheap hotel stay, you would think for the price per night night they would at least have working internet! The gym was disgusting, and the housekeeping did a terrible job cleaning the bathroom. One day housekeeping came and I was still in the room, I told them I would be leaving in a half hour and the housekeeper gave me the most disgusted look and said "oh my god, another half hour?" and then sighed and just walked away. After that I called the front desk and let them know I no longer wanted housekeeping to come for the rest of my stay - who knows what she would have done to my things! Also, the elevator went out and was unavailable for the last 2 days - I had 3 suitcases that I had to walk down 4 flights of stairs when I checked out. If I was staying at a really cheap place, OK, that's fine - and yes, Best Western isn't luxury, but basic power and internet you would expect for what I paid. Trust me, stay clear of this place! Very disappointing. As a single traveler I was put in an absolutely tiny, dark attic room with a minute window in a sloping roof. I could stand on the (single) bed and touch both walls easily - the wall was 1 foot from the bed on one side, and about 1.5 feet on the sloping ceiling side. I think this is the smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in, […] and I have stayed in some pretty small hotel rooms in capital cities all over Europe, so this is saying something. It was impossible to change the setting on the air conditioning from anything other than freezing, but I suppose it was good that I even had air conditioning. Lighting was poor - lamp by bedside didn't work. Internet was hopeless - signal seemed strong, but couldn't actually get to any webpages to load. Avoid at all costs if you are on business travel. Staff at The Cromwell is unmistakably friendly and will go out of their way to greet, help, and service your needs. Staff kept soft drinks in their fridge for us. During my 5 nite stay, WIFI at hotel was useless, I heard other guests complain, it only worked in lobby and at speeds slower than a turtle. Room was clean, bathroom very clean, room was small […] but functional. The only minor complaint, occasionally you could hear hallway noise. At the time I booked the room, this hotel seemed to be a good value for the location. After check-in and encountering the WIFI issue, I looked for alternative local options and discovered better value. The walkup room rate at four star hotel next door, for 3 of 4 remaining nites was 28% cheaper than what I had pre-paid. All said and excluding WIFI, I left The Cromwell with a positive experience. Pro – Staff, location, clean room. Con – questionable value, hallway noise, don’t count on using WIFI Neighborhood is safe and clean, but I did witness and stop an attempted pick-pocket by a 10 year old boy. Location is great, a block from the Gloucester Road tube station and if you like to walk you are 1 mile to Harrods or Kensington Whole Foods, Kensington Palace, 2 miles to Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus, <3 miles to Westminster Abbey/Big Ben or Charing Cross/Trafalgar Square, and 4.5 to St. Paul's. Well this review is a bit unusual. We booked a garden view room at this hotel, but when we went to check in they said there was a problem and they didn't have a room for us at this hotel. My first thought was that we were going to be put up at some cheap hotel, but much to my surprise they said that they booked us a room across the street at their sister […] hotel. They promptly helped my wife and I with our bags as we walked just five minutes to the hotel across the street. We were greeted there and promptly got checked into our room. This is where we were very plesed. They booked us a junior suite at a 4 star hotel and when we entered our room there was a bottle of wine from the Best Western as a small gift for the mixup and wishing us a pleasant stay in London. The room was absolutely amazing and much more expensive than the one we originally booked. I have never had a hotel go so far above what was necessary to fix a problem. It was a pleasant surprise and I will definitely stay at Best Western the Cromwell during my next trip to London. Read more
