"Poor hotel service!"
I stayed at the Astor two nights and did not receive clean towels or any hotel service the second night until I called the desk that second evening to complain. I was informed that there was nobody there to clean my room, so they brought towels, etc. up to the room and handed them to me.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The Astor is a pretty nice place, but is decidedly "no frills". The staff were very nice and the bar was staffed with a great great group of folks. The location is convenient to the lake and Brady Street area. I was in town for work and the room was quiet and the free wi-fi a definite plus. The roof top deck with bar and kitchen service is was an unexpected […] gem. A good choice for folks looking for a budget conscious option that is clean, comfortable and not scary. I would totally stay again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
was unhappy with the whole overall experience. The room was tiny, the bed uncomfortable and above the main floor the place looked in crumbling disrepair. Couldn't shut the taps in the bathroom all the way so listened to water dripping when in the room. Supposedly had a shuttle service to the waterfront venue we had chosen. Had to ask three times for […] a receipt at the end of the stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Close to hip part of Milwaukee"
Hotel is old, but I knew that going into it. Just needed a place to sleep and wanted a place close to Brady Street or downtown. Staying downtown is expensive.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Small but nice"
Helpful staff. Hotel is in a neighborhood a ways off downtown attractions, but close to a grocery store. Shuttle service that lasts until 8 pm is great (and the cab back from downtown was about $5). I only needed one bed, so the room was smaller, but exactly what I needed. They use old-school *actual* keys for the rooms and the rest of the place has […] that feel. Overall a nice place to wind down after doing whatever you're doing. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"a pleasing stay at the Astor Hotel"

It was nice and comfortable. It reminded me of an apartment instead of a hotel room.Genuine Expedia guest review
"A Nice Stay"
A fine hotel with old-time 20's-30's vibe, outstanding big band music piped in, very friendly staff, great location. There were two things I didn't like (both concerning the bathroom): no exhaust fan, and the shower didn't work right - the shower head sprayed hot water while out of the main faucet flowed the cold water. I had to take a bath instead […] of a shower. But my girlfriend, however, made it work with some jiggling around of the faucet handles. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Well maintained character"
The Astor is an older hotel that has been very well maintained. The rooms have a few contemporary upgrades such as flat screen tv's, fashionable bed linens & basic decor. But it's definitely not a cookie-cutter experience like you'll find at a chain hotel. Our room was very clean & the only "complaint" is that the 20+ year old shower head needed replaced […] ... a minor issue. Overall, the location was perfect for us (we like walking and the neighborhood was easy to navigate and well lit) and we'd return. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice Historic Hotel in National Registry"
This is a well maintained historic residential hotel (very upscale in 1920)near the lakefront with easy walking distance to the historic eastside of town and to downtown Milwaukee. They have a free shuttle to take you within two miles of the hotel, but I suggest walking since it is a lovely, older neighborhood (Note a nostalgic bias since I lived a […] half a block from this hotel 45 years ago.). The downside of the hotel is that it has not been updated to current hotel standards, i.e., still uses room keys, only modifications to the rooms have been to replace worn out areas-like bathrooms-with the exception of the lobby which seems to have been kept in its original, ornate condition. "astor milwaukee stay"
The hotel is historic, if not quite old. Have lived in Milwaukee in the past. I needed a convenient location for my stay. The Astor fit the bill for an overnight stay. Probably would not stay again for a longer period.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Showered with Bad Maintenance"
Rooms are out of date. Feels like staying at Grandma's house. It was a little dingy and my wife wouldn't walk around barefoot. While taking a cold shower, because there was no hot water, the shower would randomly shut off. Location was great for Summerfest/Beach goers, but I would not stay at this hotel again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful Historic Hotel in Grand Old Neigborhood"
If you like historic hotels with charm you should check out the Astor. It's on the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood is a great architectural walk with lots of churches and cathedrals plus you are just steps to Veteran's Memorial Park and Lake Michigan. Great locations for walks to downtown, the lake, or going for a jog. I like […] places with history and charm so I prefer to stay at places that not cookie cutter like most modern hotel chains. The front staff was very helpful and knew the history of the hotel well. I had a great stay! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Not much to say other than I didn't like the appearance of the hotel. I felt like I was at a motel instead.Genuine Expedia guest review
We booked the Astor Hotel for our 1-night stay in Milwaukee to attend Paul McCartney's concert. The hotel was from an era long gone. Beautiful lobby with quaint rooms which have been updated to today's standards. We enjoyed our stay.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Ok Stay Beautiful Location"
This is a nice historic but old hotel. The amenities were a bit lacking and it was very disappointing to learn that the complimentary breakfast was discontinued a week before we arrived. This was definately something that helped us make our decision to stay there. The staff did not seem very concerned that this had been removed for guests.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
A beautiful old vintage building much in need to being brought into the 21st century. The battub is so despicable that I didn't even wnat to take a shower in it; the floor of the tub had been painted and was peeling-off; ugh. Their shuttle service turned-out to be unavailable to bring us back to the hotel about 9:45 PM. The breakfast is not include and […] the restaurant is very sad anyway. At their price, at least a complimentary continental breakfast should be availble. Roger Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice hotel close to many sites."
Friendly & helpful staff. Great breakfast. Secure at night.Genuine Expedia guest review
This hotel has seen better days. The furniture in my room was thread bare. To enter the bathroom you had to maneuver over a small step - which I stubbed my toe on each and every time I had to enter the hotel. It was rainy and windy the second night of my stay and I wasn't able to sleep because of the wind ripping through the room and the rain making […] a loud banging noise on the window air conditioner. The cable TV did not work. The walls were thin. Carpets were dirty. Breakfast was included and consisted of a box of half melted and smeared in the box donuts and stale bread product, orange juice and coffee. Parking was difficult. The restaurant offerings were sparse at best. Milwaukee has a lot of options for a overnight stay, I would not recommend this as your choice. The upside was that the staff, in true Milwaukee fashion, was kind and attentive. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Charming isn't quite the definition I would use..."
When I first walked into the lobby area I liked the charming, historic details. Check in went fine. The elevator doors opened and I felt like I walked into a cheap horror movie. The room was fine in terms of size and lay out. However, the headboard on the bed was at about a 45 degree angle from the bed and the trim and wall paint was peeling. I live […] in an older home with the neat old accents on the trim, ceilings, etcetera and I appreciate those types of details. However, if one isn't going to take the time to restore it properly, why bother? There was also no coffee maker in the room. The room was clean and that was refreshing, though the curtains could have used a run through the washing machine. Housekeeping knocked on our door three times (once while my husband was still sleeping) before they understood me telling them we didn't need service. The parking gate opened automatically for the person in front of us each time we tried to enter though we had to call in and answer 4 questions before we could access. Not sure what the problem was there. Also got a call while exploring Milwaukee asking why our stuff was still in our room. The hotel only had me down for one night and told me they could not accomodate us the second night before they bothered to look and see the error was on their end. Rather than calling a guest and being rude as step one, I would think they would check their own records first. Left us with a negative first impression and we won't be back. "A good and convenient place to stay"
This was my second time staying at the Astor. It's an older building with lots of character which I like. If you want a huge bathroom with the latest fixtures this may not be the place for you. However, if you're in Milwaukee and out and about most of the time anyway, the Astor is a great place to call home for the night. I've not visited the bar on […] premises but there were several people there when I was arriving. There's a great Irish pub/restaurant right across the street, too. And it's only about a 10 minute walk from Brady Street which has lots of bars and restaurants. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Astor Hotel - Thnk before you book."
The hotel leaves a lot to be desired. The hotel is extremely old, which could be very nice, however it was not at all. Seems to be dingy and not maintained well at all. I know that there are appartments that are rented there, and it made me really want to see what they look like.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Charming Historical Hotel"
The charm of the hotel is the historical presence of the building - much of the decor maintains the look of the period in which it was built (1918). The room might seem smaller to travelers used to larger or more modern surroundings. However, for myself, I was pleased and enjoyed the accommodations as it still keeps in line with the time period.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Charming but oh so small and a bit noisy.........."
It is a very charming decor. However, the rooms were very small. The bathroom had no counter or shelf to put anything on - had to put stuff on floor. The bathtub faucet dripped (actually, more than a drip, the water was practically on). When the wind hit, it sounded like there was someone else in room. Bed was comfy but I swear it was a full not a queen. The […] staff though were very friendly. Thumbs up for that!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
I had a wonderful time when staying at the hotel. The staff was very helpful with letting us know where to park. However the only complaint I have was when we were about to leave I went to shower and had zero hot water. But everything else was clean and I enjoyed stay at such a beautiful old building.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Stay was horrible. There was a loud party across the hall which kept us awake most of the night from 1 AM on. Got little sleep. The lamp shade in our room was totally warn out, and the bathroom fixtures were outdated, with paint chipping off of the tub. There was no heat coming from the radiator in our room until we complained, and then it took 1 hour […] to rectify. No thermostat in room? Really!! Ours was atotally unacceptable stay. "Basically fine, except heater turned up to 11"
Everything basically was fine. It's a beautiful, charming hotel, except that our room's heater was turned all the way up so that it was about 85-90 degrees when we entered. Even after turning off the heat and opening the windows, the room was extremely uncomfortable. I suspect this was a one-time problem--I hope.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Converting from hotel to apartments. Not well maintained. I had smoke alarm "tweeting" in hallway most of first night, had to help maintenance staff identify/fix it. WiFi works poorly. Has seen its better days.Genuine Expedia guest review

"close to concerts and brewpubs"
For the money and location I don't think that the Astor can be beat, The only reason I did not give a 5 for overall rating and condition/maintenance is because it is an older building and apparently has a few moisture problems as evidenced by minor staining of the paint in the rooms that we have stayed in. "Over night stay"
The hotel had a nice feel to it, everyone was very pleasant and willing to help in any way they could. The room was slightly to warm, and we could not find the thermostat to turn the heat down. I didn't see this as an issue, I would prefer to have it to warm and open a window than a freezing room. We will most definitely be coming back.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"contender for shabbiest hotel in USA?"
Most definitely the worst hotel I've stayed in, don't stay here if you're on business. If you're looking for a cheap one night for a personal stay then you may be tempted, but I wouldn't do it. I think this might be the elephant graveyard version of where old folks send their carpets and furniture to die. "Outdated but Great Location"
The hotel was built in the 1920s and boosts this old-time feel. The rooms were comfortable but the bed was small (full size) and we were unable to control the heat or open windows making for a very hot room in early October. Check-in & out was easy. The hotel still uses physical room keys (which you are charged for if you lose). Parking is 7$ a day […] in a small lot. Location was within walking distance to lots of bars & restaurants and the historical feel of the neighborhood was great. Small free breakfast including coffee (won't find a coffee maker in your room), mini muffins, bagels, cereal and fruit (apples, bananas). There were also waffles but you were supposed to ask for assistance when making them and a sign encouraged you to eat in the small nook as opposed to taking your food elsewhere. We opted to go out for breakfast. Overall a nice stay for the price but the lack of control of the temperature was enough to make us rethink staying here again.
