On the positive side: I was given an immediate change of room when I objected to being next to the renovation site. The second room was quiet, spacious and comfortable. I liked having individually controlled air conditioning, however the negatives are: the room was only clean on the surface, multiple splashes on wall. Blood? Don't know but not pleasant. A one inch border of thick dust around the entire room against the skirting board, shower had a lot of black mould on the tiles and grout. Dirt around tap base. Toilet seat damaged and very dirty around the hinge area. Room service breakfast arrived cold and not as ordered and no salt or pepper. Replacement was hot, still not as ordered and empty salt cellar. Overall this hotel is definitely not worthy of 4.5 star rating. Meals other than breakfast were well cooked and presented but very lacking in vegetables.

Perfectly comfortable hotel and room. Bathroom a little tired and small but not really an issue. Good breakfast and helpful staff. Ideal location for the university but also very easy to get into city centre on tram.

Service is really bad. polite but extremely inefficient. Hotel booked us wrong day for airport pick up. They called me the day before we were to check in to relocate us to a another hotel which we declined. newly renovated bathroom was flooded after two person's shower . It was so bad that the water started dripping on the carpet in the room . We had to call room service who came and put towels on the wet carpet. We have never stayed in such a bad hotel whoch costed us $200 per night. Total disappointment.

Original staff could not have been more helpful and friendly, but later in the day I discovered 2 pillow cases which were dirty and had long hairs on and the receptionist was less than apologetic and made me feel unnecessarily fussy when I asked for clean ones. The housekeeping staff were quick and efficient though and did ask noisy neighbours to quieten down. Our so called family rm for 50 yr old mum n 27 yo, 16 and 14 yo boys was 2 queen beds and a bathroom door that was difficult to open and close and being a bifold kept everyone else in the room very aware of what was happening iin the bathroom - full sound effects! Sound proofing between rooms was poor and it was a noisy night with people wandering corridors at all hours.

I was disgusted to find a stranger coming into my room who had been allocated my room plus room keys, by reception. Reception's consideration of guest's personal security was totally lacking. Surprisingly I hadn't been able to find any security box in the room so my personal valuables were not secure and could easily have been removed if I hadn't been there. Fortunately the stranger was honest but hotel security at Rydges is unacceptable.

All the cleaner did was make my bed, glasses were not cleaned or changed and toiletries not replaced. There was work going on to the rooms on my floor which was not stated when I booked. There were dirty foot prints and dust all over the carpet and skirting boards. Plus a large metal crete was left outside my room for the whole of my 2 night stay.

The location is excellent, we could walk to Lygon Street and surrounds. We were happy enough with the room for the price we paid, we got an online deal which was reasonable but I would not pay the normal rate for the room. Our room was small but cozy, nice comfortable bed, goodmTV, fridge and view from window. The heating took a long time to work out and had to call to reception twice to get soemone to come up and help with it. Eventually between the two of us we got heating to work.

great value for money. The room was spacious but the furniture are a little worn. it was not located in the city cbd but the walk into the city was ok and the tram stop is just outside the hotel. the hotel bar was quite relaxing, it was specials on everyday. the staff was friendly and very knowledgeable

Not happy. Arrived after international flight to endure major renovation jackhammers that continued until 6.30 pm. Then rest of night had to endure noisy elevator. The bathroom was not clean with dirt on walls and shower grout very mould stained. The car park ( for which an additional charge of $25 was added) was a nightmare to park in as area and spaces were small making it near impossible to manoevre into spaces. It should not have the star rating it has. Staff were good and breakfast was excellent.

The hotel was within walking distance of Lygon St and the CBD. The staff were very friendly. The room was nice enough with a lovely view but very small especially with a king bed. The bathroom left a lot to be desired however. The grout between the tiles on the floor and in the shower looked filthy. The shutter doors didn't close properly and the lighting was very poor. Several people knocked on our door through the night, who knows why. Overall, I was quite disappointed. Especially because of the price we paid.

Our stay started off great! We arrived at the hotel at 10.30am and could check in straight away. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. The sheets were dirty! There was make up and stains and it looked as though the sheets were taken off and the bed re-made to hide the offending marks. There was even blood on the bed cover! We informed reception of what we thought was an error, not that they cared, in fact they were quite indifferent. The sheet was changed, but the pillows and blood stained cover remained, twice! After our complaint, both our room key cards stopped working. There was what seemed like a nightclub above our room, toiletries, coffees etc, were not replenished and towels were ripped. A real shame as the location was perfect. I hope they lift their game as there are so many other hotels offering great deals with great service. Rydges: discount room=discount service.

Having booked through Hotels.com.au we were very pleased with our stay. The room was not quite as expected (Queen bed rather than the stated King and no park view) but it was larger than usual and had a spa. The room was quiet but a bit warm and we couldn't find a way of turning the heating down. The hotel is in walking distance of the Lygon St restaurants. We would stay again.

Well located to University of Melbourne. Decor getting a little tired but all functional. I got the room for half the standard rate and that felt like good value for money. I will definitely stay again if I can get a good rate. Not worth full price though.

The few things I look for in a hotel room are cleanliness, quiet and location. We stayed at Ridges for four nights in August 2012 and it ticked each of the boxes. We stayed with two other couples and all of our rooms were spotless but two of our rooms were not recently refurbished - probably last renovated in the 1990's. The other room was recently renovated and looked beautiful. It seemed to be luck of the draw to get the recently renovated rooms as all our rooms were on the same floor and close togther. Location wise - this hotel is close to Lygon St (food) and a short tram ride away from the CBD (food, shops and a railway station). Would definately stay at this hotel again!

After being let down by the standards of other local hotels the Rydges on Swanston was closer to what we would expect when paying for a low to mid range budget. We got a great deal last minute through Expedia when hotel rooms were at a premium and our stay was made more enjoyable by this lovely hotel. Great value.

As visitors to Melbourne, we were so excited to stay close to everything. We arrived after flying from Hong Kong for 9 hours. All we wanted to do was shower and go to sleep. What a shock when we opened our room door, and the room was freezing! In addition, we had requested a king size bed, instead there was a double bed and a twin bed in the room. After some discussion with the front desk manager, Mel, we were moved 2 hours later to another room.

The tiles in the shower were cracked and I couldn't get enough water pressure to wash my hair. The pillows were plentiful, but rock hard, as was the bed. Overall, had a bit of a shabby air to it.

We did stay here for five nights. When we checked in at 7th of April we had a letter on our room explaining that the elevetor should be out of service until 2nd of April 5:30pm. A passed date and time. Elevator was still out of service when we checked out at 12th. (They provided the service elevator which didn't reach down to the garage.) I use to search the room when checking out not to forget anything. Under the beds I did find a lot of dirt, a empty plastic bag and used papertissues. None of the dirt was from us. From/to rooms you can hear all sounds. Roof deck pool is not heated. Bar and restaurant was not accessible one evening due to private party. Breakfast was very good. Staff was serviceminded.
