Magnuson Hotel and Convention Center at Oyster Point - Newport News

First, I'll say we enjoyed our stay at the Magnuson. I would stay here again if we were to return to the area. As of our stay the pool, restaurant, and fitness room had reopened. In summary: comfy beds, clean quiet rooms, fantastic breakfast, bring your own toiletries and use the internet to find area attractions. Long version: Breakfast at the restaurant […] (The Green House) was a high point. Beds were comfortable (they are fairly soft, not firm), room and bathroom were clean, there was an in-room fridge, and all was in good working order. It was also very quiet--we were near the pool, which seemed to be in frequent use by a number of kids, but never heard hallway noise. As others have mentioned, this has the potential to become a really stellar hotel, but there are a few things that keep it from being so (all acceptable, IMO, for the low price, but I note them for reference): No ventilation switch in the restroom. One cake of soap and two bottles of shampoo were the only toiletries provided. No blackout drapes. Maid service was extremely minimal--as far as I could tell, the one bed we used was made, and fresh towels were added to the bathroom, but that was it. Since we were there for a short stay, and room was very clean when we arrived, that worked out fine, but it was a little peculiar. The common area décor was a bit odd (burgundy sort of zebra-print carpet?). Staff was all very friendly, but bare-bones. I only ever saw one person at the lobby desk, no concierge. Read more

It was the worst place I have stay in many many years. I was told that the Ommi Hotel had gone out of buisness and Magnuson Hotel took over. They should not have open there doors until they were prepared for guest. You walk into the hotel and you have a very stale smell as soon as you walk into the lobby. I go to the front desk and as I was checking […] in I am told that the water throughout the hotel is turned off from 1200 hrs (NOON) to 1700 hrs (5pm). Reason given that they are working on the pipes, and this will be going on everyday during the week. I checked in and went to the room everything in the room looked old and rundown. The stale smell was even in the hallway on the six floor...I stayed in room 620. After looking around and not able to shower after a long flight I immediately went back down stairs checked out told the front desk the reason and called Hotel.com... I went to the Crowne Plaza in Hampton VA and enjoyed the rest of my trip. Magnuson Hotel you need to close...even their resturante was not even available to serve....BAD BAD...VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! they had to shut down the main water twice during my stay mid afternoon. I had to plan around this inconvenience of when to shower etc for the special event I attended. the staff were pleasant and rooms were adequate for the price. the hot tub did not work and was told multiple times during my stay it would be operational but it did not happen.

We stayed at this hotel once before when it was called the Omni. The rooms are always clean and nice and the beds were comfortable. Higher scale hotel with a cheap price. We stayed 2 nights (Friday and Saturday) and did not come in until late Saturday evening and the room had not been made up, bed was unmade, towels were unchanged and bathroom had not been cleaned. This property is a recent addition to the Magnuson group and conversion is still a work in progress. The indoor pool was not opened yet as inspectors failed to arrive as scheduled. The restaurant was not open; I suspect for the same reason. The maid neglected to give us clean glassware and coffee cups for the entire 3 night stay. She also didn't replenish […] the coffee. There was a small hole in the wall of the room. Bathroom grout could use some cleaning. A small dumpster was left in the hall outside our door; it should not have been there. On the plus side, there is lots of potential for this property. The front desk staff was attentive and courteous. Some floors were completely non-smoking which was wonderful. The room should have had a channel guide and contact information for a meal delivery service plus there was no info on the Oyster Point area, i.e. shopping, restaurants, etc. Read more

Staff was courteous and helpful. Room was clean, and TV service was excellent. Moldy / mildew smell prevalent throughout, but not horrible for short stay. Bath linens are very nice. If you can get over the intial rundown first 150 feet, it really wasn't that bad. Room was super clean and hotel was really quite. If you are looking for Holiday INN breakfast, stay somewhere else. If you want a good room for a great price, you are in luck. It was scary until I got up to the room, then it was just another hotel room.

The hotel is undergoing renovations, so the restaurant and pool are closed. However, we didn't need those. We just wanted a safe, clean, comfortable hotel for the night. Overall it wasn't bad. The price is great and the bed was very comfortable and clean. Our room passed the bed bug inspection. It was a little...how should I put this...ghetto. The main thing that bothered me was the smell. It was a funky carpet/chemical smell. It was stronger in the hallways than the room. No continental breakfast which was a bummer […] but not a huge deal. It appears that the hotel was recently bought by a new company so they're in the process of renovating everything. The pool was under construction when we stayed there. Also we were stuck in an awkward corner room. My husband's complaint was that the shower water never got hot and the shower head was not good.
